Heads of the Group of Seven major democracies on Saturday pledged to stand by war-weary Ukraine, and Western leaders traveled to Kyiv to show solidarity on the second anniversary of Russia's invasion, with no end in the sight to the fighting.

According to IMF forecasts, two years after the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, Russia's economy is expected to grow faster than several of the Western nations that had put sanctions on it.

Top Biden administration officials spent last weekend in Europe trying to soothe jitters over the prospect of U.S. military aid to Ukraine ending, assuring counterparts from Paris, Berlin and Kyiv as the war enters its third year that Washington will somehow come through.

On the frontlines of Ukraine, the snow is slowly melting but the battle is getting intense. The initial shock and disbelief have faded, replaced by a deep-seated weariness and the harsh realities of a protracted conflict.

A 23-year-old Indian was reported killed in a Ukrainian drone strike in the Donetsk region near the Russia-Ukraine border. Hemil Ashvinbhai Mangukiya hailed from Gujarat state and was reportedly employed by the Russian army as a security helper.

He began working for the army in December 2023. The same month, an agent on behalf of his father had written to the Indian consulate in Moscow to facilitate the repatriation of Mangukiya.

As per media reports, the Russian Army has recruited over 100 Indians to fight in its ongoing war in Ukraine, a fact acknowledged by India’s foreign ministry just two days back.

“We know that a few Indian nationals have signed up for support jobs with the Russian Army. The Indian Embassy has regularly taken up this matter with the relevant Russian authorities for their early discharge,” said MEA spokesman Randhir Jaiswal.

It has been reported that most of these Indians were treated unfairly by the Russian authorities, prompting them to seek assistance from the Indian government.

Sri Lanka said Sunday it had ended long-term tourist visa extensions for thousands of Russians and Ukrainians using the policy to live on the island since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

"The government is not granting further visa extensions," Commissioner-General of Immigration Harsha Ilukpitiya told AFP, giving a March 7 deadline for departure.

"The flight situation has now normalised and they have no difficulty in getting back."

Just over 288,000 Russians and nearly 20,000 Ukrainians have visited Sri Lanka in the past two years, according to official figures.

It is not clear how many stayed longer than the usual 30-day tourist visa.

But thousands of Russians and smaller numbers of Ukrainians are believed to have settled in Sri Lanka, some to avoid potential draft into the army.

Some who stayed have started restaurants and set up nightclubs.

The government decision coincided with a furious social media backlash against a Russian-run nightclub which had organised a "whites-only" party in the southern coastal resort town of Unawatuna.

Sri Lanka sought to boost tourism by granting 30-day visas on arrival, as the country desperately needed foreign exchange as it recovers from its worst economic crisis since mid-2022.

The country defaulted on its $46 billion foreign debt in April 2022 and months of street protests led to the resignation of then-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa three months later.

An IMF bailout of $2.9 billion has helped stabilise the economy and end shortages of essentials such as food, fuel and medicines.

Yes, the sanctions are unprecedented. Russia's foreign currency reserves worth $350 billion, which is about half its total reserves have been frozen. About 70 per cent of the assets of Russian banks were also frozen, the EU says, and some were excluded from Swift, a high-speed messaging service for financial institutions.

But the numbers tell a different tale. According to the International Monetary Fund, in the first year of the war, Russia's economy shrank by 2.1 per cent, only to grow by 2.2 per cent in 2023 and is predicted to grow by 1.1 per cent in 2024.

When the West slammed its door on Putin, he ventured East. Russia has been steadily building closer economic ties with China and other Asian countries. These new partnerships are helping to mitigate the impact of Western sanctions.

The people of Ukraine, caught in the crossfire of this geopolitical chess game, are the ones truly suffering. The losses on the Russian side are also huge, the actual figures remain hidden in the fog of war.

As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its third year, Kyiv is looking at a bleak future due to the US Congress blocking a vital $60 billion aid package. This has come on top of delays in promised European deliveries. The potential re-election of Donald Trump in the US adds another layer of complexity.

Russia-Ukraine war turns two. Here's what the future holds

Four world leaders visited the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Saturday (Feb 24), a day that marked the completion of two years of the Russia-Ukraine war. It was on this day in 2022, that Russian forces launched what President Vladimir Putin calls a 'special military operation'. On Saturday, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed confidence that Ukraine will clinch victory in the ongoing conflict.

He was flanked by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.

"We will win," said Zelensky during the joint press conference at Gostomel airport in Kyiv. The airport has frequently been targeted by Russia.

In 2022, when Russian forces invaded Ukraine, it was expected that the former world superpower will quickly attain victory. But Ukrainian forces fought back. The West, led by the United States, slapped sanctions on Russia and poured billions of dollars in humanitarian as well as military aid for Ukraine.

However, following Western help Ukraine has not been able to mount a successful counteroffensive and Russian forces have dug in, building fortified defences on Ukrainian land.

Russia-Ukraine war: Russia makes crucial advances in Ukraine | Pushes further in West

On the frontlines of Ukraine, the snow is slowly melting but the battle is getting intense. Long faces, hunkered in the trenches, Ukrainian troops are growing weary as the war completes its second grim anniversary. The initial shock and disbelief have faded, replaced by a deep-seated weariness and the harsh realities of a protracted conflict. The initial narrative of valiant Ukrainian resistance against a clumsy Russian invasion has morphed into a complex and brutal war of attrition, where every inch gained comes at a heavy cost.

On February 24th, 2022, the world watched in disbelief as Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine, aiming for a swift regime change. However, the initial euphoria of the Russian blitzkrieg soon dissipated. Ukrainian forces, underestimated and outgunned, surprised the world with their fierce resistance. Ukraine was seen as a defiant nation in this David vs. Goliath battle against Vladimir Putin's Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was hailed as a hero against West's villain Vladimir Putin. Armed with Western anti-tank weapons like Javelins and NLAWs, they inflicted significant losses on the Russian armoured columns. Images of damaged Russian Tanks forced Moscow to retreat, regroup, and change tactics.

Learning from their early mistakes, Moscow adopted a more methodical approach. They shifted their focus to the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, employing heavy artillery barrages and siege tactics. While Ukrainian forces continued to resist fiercely, the imbalance in firepower and manpower slowly started to tell. Cities like Mariupol were reduced to rubble, and the human cost of the war mounted relentlessly.

Western support for Ukraine has been crucial in its continued resistance. Ukraine has received over $230 billion in aid since the Russian invasion in 2022. Billions of dollars in military aid, including advanced weaponry like HIMARS rocket systems, and Patriot missile systems gave Ukrainian forces the firepower to hit back at Russian forces. However, at the moment the flow of aid has turned into a trickle. The West's reluctance is often tied to complex political calculations and bureaucratic hurdles. This has left Kyiv with a constant sense of teetering on the brink, where every weapon delivery feels like a reprieve, but never a solution.

Two years into the war, the situation on the ground is grim. Russia has captured significant territory in the east, focusing on consolidating its hold on the Donbas region. Ukrainian forces, though showing remarkable resilience, are increasingly stretched thin, facing manpower shortages and dwindling ammunition supplies. The initial euphoria of early victories has given way to a desperate struggle for survival, with no clear end in sight.

While Russia currently holds the upper hand in terms of territory and firepower, its own problems are undeniable. Sanctions have crippled its economy, morale is low, and the true cost of the war in lives and resources is starting to bite. The question remains: can Russia sustain this level of aggression indefinitely, and at what cost?

A $95 billion aid package in potential American aid to Ukraine is stuck in limbo on Capitol Hill. The US President Joe Biden is pushing for it but former president Donald Trump has instructed Republicans to hold it back, and Zelensky is feeling jittery. This uncertainty adds another layer of frustration for Ukraine, already struggling with shortages and facing a critical juncture in the war. Ukrainian President has now called for Western countries to accelerate deliveries of promised air defence systems and fighter jets.

There is a sense of urgency in Kyiv's plea as ammunition is running desperately low. US President Joe Biden renewed his call on Republican lawmakers in Congress to unblock additional funding for Ukraine. Biden said: "We can't walk away now."

Beyond the military developments, the human cost of this war is staggering. Thousands of civilians have been killed, millions displaced, and the infrastructure of entire cities lies in ruins. The scars of this conflict will resonate for generations to come, leaving behind a legacy of trauma, grief, and a deep sense of loss.

The war in Ukraine has entered a dangerous and unpredictable phase. On the second anniversary, the West faces a complex dilemma. How much support can be provided without escalating into a wider conflict? Can diplomacy find a path to peace, or is this destined to be a long, bloody stalemate? The answers remain elusive, shrouded in the fog of war and the uncertainty of the future. But one thing is clear: the cost of inaction is just as high as the cost of war.
