A new study says that the cost-of-living crisis in the UK is leading to premature deaths. Meanwhile, the city of Birmingham has declared itself bankrupt. Priyanka Sharma tells you about the UK’s cocktail of crises.

Gravitas: Is the Great Britain going broke?

The cost of living crisis in the United Kingdom will cause thousands of premature deaths in the country currently under Rishi Sunak's premiership and will expand the gap between the richest and poorest in the matters of health as well as financial positioning, a study published in the journal BMJ Public Health has suggested.

Why so many premature deaths predicted in the UK?

Millions of British have been hit hard with levels of inflation not seen since the 1970s as a result of the war in Ukraine, Covid, Brexit and their collective economic ramifications coupled with frequent exit of Prime Ministers from 10, Downing Street over past few years of significant shifts in the British polity.

Poorer households have borne the brunt as they spend a larger proportion of their income on energy, the cost of which has soared due to increased gas prices due to Russia's tightening of the noose on European energy supply following the war in Ukraine.

UK cost of living crisis: What's the big picture?

The modelling study suggests premature deaths – people dying before they reach 75 – will rise 6.5 per cent this year due to the cost of living crisis, with 30 extra deaths per 100,000 people.

The study focused on Scotland. But the researchers, from Public Health Scotland and the University of Glasgow, said “similar effects are likely across the UK as we have modelled the impact of UK government measures”.

The predicted increase in premature deaths – from a baseline 463 per 100,000 people to 493 per 100,000 – equates to thousands of extra deaths a year in the UK.

But it's a modelling study, so take it with a pinch of salt

It must be noted that a number of such modelling studies, mostly heralded by epidemiologists during the Covid pandemic, predicted several million deaths due to contagion virus, none of which came true.

The official death count numbers up to a little less than 7 million globally.

For the latest UK study, the scenario modelling estimated the effect of recent high inflation on household incomes, mitigation measures' impact of potentially modifying these effects, and how death rates, life expectancy and inequalities would change as a result.

In every scenario modelled, households in the most deprived areas were the hardest hit in relative terms, even with government support, and will be £1,400 ($1703) worse off in 2022/23, the study found.

Without any mitigation, inflation will increase premature deaths by 5 per cent in the least deprived areas and by 23 per cent in the most deprived, the study suggests.

The study indicated that the premature deaths in the poorest households are predicted to rise at a rate four times faster than in the wealthiest.

Overall life expectancy also falls in each of the three scenarios modelled. But in each case, larger reductions in life expectancy were predicted in the most deprived areas.

Limitations to the modeling

The researchers acknowledged limitations to their modelling. For example, their price inflation estimates didn’t include the costs associated with owning, maintaining and living in one’s own home or other factors affecting household expenditure.

They concluded: "The mortality impacts of inflation and real-terms income reduction are likely to be large and negative, with marked inequalities in how these are experienced. Implemented public policy responses are not sufficient to protect health and prevent widening inequalities."

In the UK, offenders are automatically released after serving half their standard determinate sentence. They then complete the rest of their sentence on licence. Last year, the Police, Crime and Courts Act automatically ended the early release for sexual offences that carry the maximum sentences. Additionally, those serving a sentence of four years or more are now required to serve at least two-thirds of their sentence.
The United Kingdom's competition regulators have agreed to clear the final legal hurdle in Microsoft's ambitious $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard Inc., according to a report by Bloomberg. It has taken more than a year and a half to reach this point in the process of concluding the biggest gaming deal in history.

The proposed concessions by Microsoft clear the way for the deal, according to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which made the declaration on Friday. According to the regulator, the revised proposal, which involves the transfer of gaming rights to the French publisher Ubisoft Entertainment SA, will foster healthy competition in the field of cloud gaming for many years to come. By October 6, the CMA wants to hear from the public about this offer.

This development marks a significant turn of events for a deal that had previously faced significant obstacles, including early objections from antitrust regulators, including a veto from the UK earlier this year. Following Microsoft's court triumph over the Federal Trade Commission's opposition to the transaction, it began to make a comeback. The CMA was the final regulatory obstacle after the European Union eventually approved the purchase in May, although with additional minor restrictions.

Bloomberg quoted Colin Raftery, a senior director of mergers at the CMA, who highlighted the transformation of the deal, stating, "This is a new and substantially different deal, which keeps the cloud distribution of these important games in the hands of a strong independent supplier, Ubisoft, rather than under the control of Microsoft."

Although the agreement has taken longer than expected to materialise, it is the cornerstone of a strategy by Xbox CEO Phil Spencer to revive Microsoft's flagging mobile gaming market. Spencer now challenged with implementing this plan in a gaming environment that has changed, with a lesser focus placed on the metaverse, which was once hailed as the acquisition's motivating factor.

Microsoft's stock price was mostly unchanged as of 9:10 a.m. in Germany, while Activision's stock price increased by 1.3 per cent. Ubisoft's stock increased by as much as 3.26 per cent in Paris.

Brad Smith, a Microsoft executive, expressed optimism about the CMA's progress. "We are encouraged by this positive development in the CMA's review process. We presented solutions that we believe fully address the CMA's remaining concerns related to cloud game streaming," Bloomberg quoted him as saying.

Activision's CEO, Bobby Kotick, acknowledged the critical importance of the CMA's preliminary approval, stating in a blog post, "The CMA's preliminary approval of our merger is critical to completing the deal."

The CMA had previously rejected the agreement, citing possible repercussions like increased costs, fewer options, and decreased innovation for UK gamers. According to the regulator, the newly proposed rules prevent Microsoft from limiting access to Activision's essential content to just its own cloud gaming service or from withholding these titles from rivals.

The CEO of the CMA, Sarah Cardell, emphasised that it would have been preferable if Microsoft had presented this restructuring during the initial investigation, highlighting the expenses, ambiguity, and delays that can result from failing to promptly offer a workable and efficient remedy option.
