Researchers in the United Kingdom have initiated the first-ever clinical trial for a non-hormonal male birth control pill, marking a significant step toward achieving equitable responsibility for contraception between genders.

Quotient Sciences, a Nottingham-based drug development company, has commenced the phase I trial for its groundbreaking male contraceptive, YCT-529, involving 16 British men.

Diverging from traditional hormonal methods, YCT-529 operates without hormones and inhibits sperm production by blocking access to vitamin A. Historical studies spanning over 90 years have revealed that depriving mice, rats, and monkeys of vitamin A can induce infertility, forming the basis for this pioneering approach.

<h2>Shifting the burden of responsibility</h2>

The goal of this novel pill is to empower men in preventing unintended pregnancies, challenging the historical burden placed solely on women for contraception.

Currently, male contraceptive options are limited to withdrawal, condoms, and vasectomy, while women have a broader array of choices such as the pill, coil, contraceptive injection, and female condoms or diaphragms.

Pre-clinical studies conducted by YourChoice Therapeutics, the San Francisco-based manufacturer of YCT-529, report impressive effectiveness. The pill is claimed to be 99 per cent effective and 100 per cent&nbsp;reversible, with no discernible side effects. The method involves blocking a specific protein, diverging from the conventional hormonal approach, with the aim of making contraception more appealing and shared between partners.

Under the new guidance released by the UK&nbsp;Department of Education, teachers in the country have been told that they do not have to address students by their chosen pronouns. The draft document states that&nbsp;children, teachers or staff at a school should "not be required to adopt the use of preferred pronouns".

The draft adds that in&nbsp;the absence of preferred pronouns, the child's preferred name should be used, with schools having a duty to ensure bullying is never tolerated.

Commenting on the decision,&nbsp;Education Secretary Gillian Keegan said teachers or&nbsp;pupils should not be pressured into using different pronouns.&nbsp;

The draft takes a 'parents first' approach under which they should be informed at the earliest if their ward demands to have a different gender at school than the one assigned at birth.&nbsp;

"Parents' views must also be at the heart of all decisions made about their children," added Keegan.&nbsp;

Despite the plethora of changes, former prime minister Liz Truss said the guidance provided "insufficient protection and clarity". Notably, Truss previously presented a private member's bill that called for social transitioning to not be recognised by schools for under-18s.&nbsp;

"Proper use of this guidance means social transition, in practice, should be extremely rare when the appropriate safeguards are put in place and the child's best interest taken into account," the draft adds.

A member of Britain's House of Lords, Michelle Mone, has openly admitted to repeatedly providing false information about her connections to a company awarded significant government contracts for the supply of protective gear during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mone acknowledged that she made an error in denying her ties to PPE Medpro and expressed regret for threatening legal action against journalists who reported on her links to the company.

Her husband, Doug Barrowman, confirmed his role in leading the consortium that owns PPE Medpro.

In a recent BBC interview, Mone confessed, "I did make an error in saying to the press that I wasn't involved. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I wasn't trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes, and I regret and I'm sorry for not saying straight out, 'Yes, I am involved.'"

<h2>Financial involvement and ownership</h2>

Mone admitted to being a beneficiary of her husband's financial trusts, holding approximately £60 million in profits from the lucrative deal. Despite their financial ties to the company, she argued that they were unfairly targeted in a broader scandal surrounding government spending during the pandemic.

"We've done one thing, which was lie to the press to say we weren't involved," she stated. "I can't see what we've done wrong."

The controversy surrounding Mone and PPE Medpro has become emblematic of the widespread criticism directed at the British government for hastily awarded contracts and mismanagement of funds for protective equipment. The scandal sheds light on the VIP lanes, a system where companies recommended by politicians receive preferential treatment for public contracts.

Mone, appointed to the House of Lords in 2015 by then-Prime Minister David Cameron, denied using her political connections to advocate for PPE Medpro. The company, established during the pandemic, secured contracts exceeding £200 million but faced scrutiny for delivering millions of unused surgical gowns, leading to breach of contract proceedings.

British teenager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/uk-boy-missing-since-2017-reportedly-found-in-france-669813">Alex Batty </a>who was found in France after disappearing while on holiday in Spain with his mother and grandfather has returned to the United Kingdom, said the police, on Saturday (Dec 16).&nbsp;

Alex, who is now 17 years old, went missing at the age of 11, in 2017 during a holiday in Spain and was recently found by a delivery driver along a mountainous area of southern France. The British police had launched a case after Alex and his family members did not return from the Spanish city of Marbella after two weeks.&nbsp;

His mother, whose current whereabouts are unknown, does not have parental guardianship.&nbsp;

Here’s what we know about the years-long case:&nbsp;

<h2>Alex returns to UK</h2>

“It gives me great pleasure to say Alex has now made his safe return back to the UK after six years,” said Matt Boyle, assistant chief of the Greater Manchester police (GMP), on Saturday night. He also said that Alex met his step-grandfather at Toulouse airport before flying back to the UK.&nbsp;

“This moment was undoubtedly huge for him and his loved ones and we’re glad that they have been able to see each other again after all this time,” said the British police.&nbsp;

The GMP has yet to take a formal statement from Alex and did not comment on the details disclosed by the French authorities about what he may have been doing when he went missing.

“Speaking with him (Alex) at a pace that feels comfortable to him will ultimately determine how this case is progressed, and whether there is a criminal investigation to ensue,” said GMP.&nbsp;

<h2>Why did Alex leave the UK?</h2>

Alex hails from Oldham, Greater Manchester and has been returned to his maternal grandmother Susan Caruana, whom the British justice system had entrusted with his custody before his alleged abduction.

According to reports, Alex was allegedly abducted by his mother Melanie Batty and grandfather David Batty. Due to domestic issues, both adults were banned from being with the youngster at the time.&nbsp;

Alex’s mother, Melanie is yet to be found but could be in Finland, according to Toulouse assistant prosecutor Antoine Leroy. Alex reportedly told the police that his grandfather, David may have died six months ago but it is unclear where he might have been buried.

Susan Caruana, who was Alex’s grandmother and official guardian, believed that her ex-partner and her daughter had run away with Alex and had settled into “an alternative lifestyle” somewhere.&nbsp;

She believed, at the time of Alex’s disappearance, that Melanie and David had taken him abroad and “got involved with a cult”.

“I can’t wait to see him when we’re reunited,” said Caruana. “The main thing is that he’s safe, after what would be an overwhelming experience for anyone, not least a child.”&nbsp;

<h2>What happened in France?</h2>

The 17-year-old was found by a delivery driver after he had walked for four days and nights, said a deputy prosecutor. A doctor who examined him said that he is in good health and does not appear to have been abused in the years since his abduction, reported AFP.&nbsp;

According to French media reports, Alex told investigators he had not suffered any physical violence during the past six years.&nbsp;

Alex had been in France for two years before he was found, he told the investigators, and had lived a “nomadic” life in a “spiritual community” but would not stay in the same place for more than several months at a time.&nbsp;

According to the French prosecutor, the teenager had decided to escape when his mother announced she was going to Finland. Alex told French investigators they had spent time in Morocco before moving to the French Pyrenees, near the border with Spain.&nbsp;

Alex also reportedly told investigators that he had spent time in a spiritual community centre focused on “work on the ego, meditation and reincarnation” when his mother said she was moving to Finland and he decided to leave.&nbsp;

Alex had been walking along the road by night to avoid detection and foraging food from gardens and fields along the way, when a student working as a delivery driver, Fabien Accidini, picked Alex up between two villages in the pouring rain.&nbsp;

“He clearly needed help,” Fabien told AFP, and since Alex did not speak French very well, he spoke to him in English. Alex who was also suspicious of Fabien initially gave him a fake name but as the boy helped him with his deliveries he opened up.&nbsp;

HMS Diamond, a Type 45 destroyer, is carrying out operations to make sure freedom of navigation, reassure merchant vessels and ensure the safe flow of trade, said the defence ministry.

The deployment of the naval vessel took place&nbsp;following the seizure of an Israeli-linked cargo vessel by Iranian-backed Yemeni Houthi rebels in the Red Sea on Nov 19 amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

The Yemeni Houthis have launched a series of drone and projectile strikes targetting Israel since Hamas launched unprecedented attacks on Oct 7, claiming the lives of around 1,140 people, mostly civilians, as per Israeli figures.

Nearly 240 people were taken hostages in the attacks. &nbsp;

Israel in retaliation&nbsp;launched a counter-offensive that, as per the Hamas-run territory's health ministry has killed at least 18,800 people, mostly women and children.

The Houthi rebels have threatened to attack any vessels heading to Israeli ports unless food and medicine are allowed into the war-torn Gaza Strip. &nbsp;

On Friday, two of the world's largest shipping firms, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, said that they were suspending passage through a Red Sea strait vital for global commerce, after the incidents.

UK defence minister Grant Shapps&nbsp;warned Saturday that "the recent spate of illegal attacks represent a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security in the Red Sea."

"The UK remains committed to repelling these attacks to protect the free flow of global trade," he added.

“This is a day we never thought would happen. I would like to say a big thank you to detective inspector Stuart Grainger and all of the police who worked on the case over the years," said Margaret McKeich, Caroline's mother as quoted by The Independent.

“I just don’t know what to say. This has been a great day. I can’t sum up how I feel. It will not bring her back, but at least we know who was responsible is serving time because for the last 25 years, they’ve had their Christmases and birthdays, but my Caroline has been in the ground.”

<h2>The murder</h2>

Caroline Glachan's body was found on the banks of a river in Renton, which is in the northwest of Glasgow.

Prosecutors reportedly told the court that the accused, who were teenagers at the time, called Caroline at a bridge beside the river. The 14-year-old Caroline was then attacked by the trio who kicked and punched her on the body and the head.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said that the government's plans to curb legal migration will trigger a recruitment crisis in the British capital.

High levels of legal migration have particularly ruled the political landscape of Britain for over ten years and have been a significant factor in the 2016 vote for Brexit.

Last week, Britain announced plans to slash the number of migrants that were arriving via legal routes and raise the minimum salary they must earn in a skilled job by a third&nbsp;amid pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to tackle record net migration figures.

Home Secretary (interior minister) James Cleverly said the new measures could reduce that number by 300,000.

Cleverly said that the government would raise the minimum salary threshold for foreign skilled workers to 38,700 pounds ($48,900), from its current level of 26,200 pounds, though health and social workers would be exempt.

Describing the policies as misguided, Khan said that the failure to train the domestic workforce will make it difficult for London businesses to function without the required staff.

“One of the reasons that London is the greatest city in the world is the contribution of successive generations of immigrants working side by side with trained Brits. Migrants are absolutely integral to our economy and public services, whether running our care homes and our bars and restaurants or helping power our world-leading arts and creative sector," the Guardian quoted Khan as saying.

“It is vital that more is done to train up British workers with the right skills. But the government needs to realise that these latest immigration policies will lead to a full-blown recruitment crisis. This will have severe consequences for public services and the economy, not just here in London but across the UK.”

<h2>'New immigration salary'</h2>

Cleverly said the government would put an end to the current system that lets employers pay migrants only 80 per cent&nbsp;of the going rate to do jobs where there is a significant worker shortage.

"We will stop immigration undercutting the salary of British workers," Cleverly told lawmakers. "We will create a new immigration salary list with a reduced number of occupations."

But the government needs to realise that these latest immigration policies will lead to a full-blown recruitment crisis. This will have severe consequences for public services and the economy, not just here in London but across the UK.” 'New immigration salary' Cleverly said the government would put an end to the current system that lets employers pay migrants only 80 per cent of the going rate to do jobs where there is a significant worker shortage. "We will stop immigration undercutting the salary of British workers," Cleverly told lawmakers. "We will create a new immigration salary list with a reduced number of occupations."
