The first-of-its-kind survey on people's experience with violence and harassment at work has surprisingly revealed that sexual harassment while prevalent is not the most reported form of abuse in workplaces; psychological abuse takes the cake.

The survey undertaken as a joint effort between International Labour Organization (ILO), Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF) and Gallup found that almost one in five people or 17.9 per cent have experienced psychological abuse and harassment in their workplace. This means that 583 million all over the world have experienced abuse such as insults, threats, bullying or intimidation.

Sexual harassment on the other hand was faced by one in fifteen or 6.3 per cent of people. Globally 205 million employees have faced unwanted sexual touching, comments, pictures, emails or sexual requests.

As with sexual abuse, women were found to have experienced higher incidences of psychological violence and harassment. However, the frequency of psychological abuse was higher for men.

Incidents of physical violence were also found to be prevalent. 277 million or 8.5 per cent have faced abuse in the form of hitting, restraining or spitting.
While both genders faced it, men were more likely to have experienced it, they were also more likely to report the abuse.

The words written by Varun Grover perfectly capture the essence of Anvita Dutt’s latest movie ‘Qala’. The film takes us on a journey with a renowned singer who has already reached professional heights but is still fighting inner demons. A strained relationship with her mother (played by a superb Swastika Mukherjee) and a dark secret from her past has made sure that happiness is but a fleeting emotion in Qala Manjushree’s (Tripti Dimri) life and the only thing that she truly craves is love.

Anvita, whose last film 'Bulbbul' was a feminist supernatural drama set in late 19th century India, chooses the 1930-1940s as the backdrop for her new movie. It is a time where male musicians are ‘Pandits’ and superstars but their female counterparts are reduced to ‘Bai’ – a connotation related to courtesans. As a result, Qala’s gender becomes a hinderance from the very moment she is born in a family of musicians and the fact that her twin brother dies in her mother’s womb only makes the situation worse. Qala’s mother, a singer past her prime, wants to make her a classical maestro but is not happy with her progress and her search for perfection becomes the daughter’s personal hell.

In a household with two women, patriarchy looms like a dark cloud and the entry of a talented singer Jagan Batwal somehow establishes the status quo in the house. Jagan quickly becomes the heir apparent to the gharana (musical lineage) while Qala slowly loses her own ghar (house). Qala even makes it to the film industry in Calcutta but it is not enough to win the love she craves.

Through the life of Qala, we are constantly reminded of the sexism that has shaped the society – in the 1930s and even today. Within minutes of a press conference after she wins a prestigious award, a male journalist asks her about her marriage plans – something that is still quite common. Even a cry for help from Qala is met with a casual comment from the doctor that women are prone to hysteria. Mental health is almost a constant theme in the story – from Qala’s mother going through the trauma of losing a son to Qala slowly losing the capability to differentiate dreams from reality.

However, even in the grim snows of Himachal Pradesh or the lonely corners of Calcutta, the movie holds on to its hope. The moth is a constant motif throughout the 119-minute film and like a moth to fire, Qala keeps trying to win her mother’s love. Towards the early part of the movie, Qala even remarks that she hates music but the hope of acceptance allows her to carry on. It is as though the movie is trying to find a glint of hope that the world that Qala inhabits will surely change for the better.

The hope is not limited to Qala. While exploring the film industry, we are introduced to a predatory music director whose reputation of abuse is well known to everyone. Even in this case, Qala chooses to find some hope for the future. The lyricist Majrooh (presumably a tribute to legendary songwriter Majrooh Sultanpuri played by Varun Grover) urges Qala to fight the cycle of abuse and says – Daud badlega, daud ki yeh purani adaat hain (time will change, time has an old habit of doing so).

Kanye West is finally hitting back at Twitter's new boss, Elon Musk. After getting blocked from the microblogging site again, Kanye made his comeback on Instagram. The rapper's profile was locked after he violated rules of the photo-sharing app. On Sunday, the ban was lifted, and as was expected, West was quick to take aim at the Tesla CEO, who kicked him off the micro-blogging site after the rapper shared a picture of a Nazi symbol with a Jewish star. Not only he took a dig at Elon, but he also mentioned former President of the United States Barak Obama, Jay Z and Mark Zuckerberg in his bizarre post. Not just Kanye West, these celebrities also got dumped by brands for their harsh words and actions Taking a harsh dig at Musk, Kanye, who goes by the name Ye, wrote, "Am I the only one who thinks Elon could be half Chinese?" Have you ever seen his pictures as a child? "Take a Chinese genius and mate them with a South African supermodel, and we have an Elon Musk."
The comedian and popular show host Nick Cannon was recently hospitalised after performing at his jam-packed show at Madison Square Garden. Nick was taken to the hospital after feeling unwell, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

A few hours later, Cannon gave a health update to all his fans. Sharing a photo from the hospital bed, Nick wrote, "So, I guess I’m not Superman... I promised myself I would never be back at this place again… But this is a great lesson to take care of yourself, or you won’t be able to take care of everyone else.

The movie is a sequel to the highly successful thriller of the same name. The second instalment picks up seven years after the first film, and the Salgaonkars are still living in Goa, but they are terrified. WION's film critic Shomini Sen writes, The film takes time to establish itself. The first half-hour of the film is spent introducing the various plot characters. While the remake sticks mostly to the original template, some scenes are added additionally, perhaps to suit the Hindi-speaking audience. I honestly did not find the first half of the film engaging, nor did I feel too invested in the story. But in the second half, the film truly shines.
On December 1, World AIDS Day is observed. The day aims to raise awareness and dispel myths about the disease, to remember those who have died due to it, and to protect those currently afflicted with it.

AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is one of the deadliest and most feared diseases and is among the ones that people from every age group need to be aware of.

On World AIDS Day, we explain the difference between AIDS and HIV and some of the most common myths about the syndrome.

A very common misconception about the syndrome is that AIDS and HIV are the same thing. Most of us are in the habit of using both terms interchangeably, unaware of the meaning behind the two words.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is the virus that causes infection, whereas AIDS is the disease that is caused by HIV if left untreated.

World AIDS Day 2022: Celebrities who battled HIV/AIDS - Billy Porter, Freddie Mercury

What is HIV?

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the immune system of the body, making the infected person more vulnerable to other deadly diseases. It is spread via unprotected sexual contact, needles, and syringes.

The virus mainly affects the white blood cells aka leukocytes, that protect our immune system and fight against infections and diseases.

There is no cure for the virus, but medications are available to control the infection. The virus remains in the infected body for a lifetime.

What is AIDS?

AIDS, a chronic immune system disease, is the advanced stage of infection caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). If the person gets infected with the virus and doesn't get treatment for the same, then the person can develop a life-threatening disease AIDS.

A person who has been diagnosed as HIV positive doesn't necessarily have AIDS.

There are three stages of HIV infection.

Stage 1: Acute HIV infection - Within a few weeks of the infection, the body may show slight flu-like symptoms.

Stage 2: This is the second stage of HIV and is also referred to as chronic HIV infection. In this stage, the virus multiplies but the process is slow and may last as long as 10–15 years with no symptoms. But in some exceptional cases, the process can be fast.

Stage 3 - When the virus has damaged the immune system of the body to an extreme extent that the body is not able to fight back, then the stage is termed AIDS.

It is as much a part of French culture as the Eiffel Tower or Edith Piaf but the origins of the humble baguette, which UNESCO on Wednesday added to its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, remain a mystery.

Here are some of the more popular theories:

Napoleon's bread of war -

The oldest tale has the baguette being kneaded by bakers in Napoleon's army. Less bulky than a traditional loaf, the long slim shape of the baguette made it faster to bake in brick ovens hastily erected on the battlefield.

France's most famous man of war was preoccupied with getting his men their daily bread.

During his Russian campaign in 1812, he toured the ovens daily to sample the day's offering and ensure the crusty batons were being distributed regularly, according to historian Philippe de Segur.

He also had portable bread mills sent to occupied Moscow, but the setbacks suffered by the Grande Armee in one of the deadliest military campaigns in history ended his bid to export the doughy staple.

The Viennese connection -

Another theory has the baguette starting out in a Viennese bakery in central Paris in the late 1830s.

Artillery officer and entrepreneur August Zang brought Austria's culinary savoir-faire to Paris in the form of the oval-shaped bread that were standard in his country at the time.

According to the Compagnonnage des boulangers et des patissiers, the French bakers' network, Zang decided to make the loaves longer to make them easier for the city's breadwomen to pluck from the big carts they pushed through the city's streets.

Breaking bread -

Another theory has the baguette being born at the same time as the metro for the 1900 Paris Exposition.

People from across France came to work on the underground and fights would often break out on site between labourers armed with knives, which they used to slice big round loaves of bread for lunch.

According to the herodote.net history site, to avoid bloodshed, one engineer had the idea of ordering longer loaves that could be broken by hand.

Early rising -

In 1919, a new law aimed to improve the lives of bakers by banning them from working from 10 pm to 4 am.

The reform gave them less time to prepare the traditional sourdough loaf for the morning, marked the widespread transition to what was called at the time the yeast-based "flute", which rose faster and was out of the oven in under half an hour.

Standardised at 80 centimeters (30 inches) and 250 grams (eight ounces) with a fixed price until 1986, the baguette was initially the mainstay of wealthy metropolitans, but after World War II became the emblem of all French people.

'It's on the to-do list': Musk now wants to change Twitter's word limit

We are living in an age of misinformation. The sources of information are many, but the trustworthy ones are few. In this day and age of "fake news", "conspiracy theories", "deepfakes" and "trolls", the Merriam-Webster word of the year 2022 is "gaslighting".

The word is by no means new, but this year saw an ever-increasing interest in it, with over 1740 per cent increase in instances of people looking for its meaning.

What does 'Gaslighting' mean?

As per Merriam-Webster, there are two definitions of the word, but both of them have to do everything with disorientation, mistrust, manipulation and selfish motives.

One way to describe it is an "act or practice of grossly misleading someone, especially for one’s own advantage."

One way to describe it is an "act or practice of grossly misleading someone, especially for one’s own advantage." Another definition describes gaslighting as the "psychological manipulation of a person usually over an extended period of time that causes the victim to question the validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories and typically leads to confusion, loss of confidence and self-esteem, the uncertainty of one's emotional or mental stability, and a dependency on the perpetrator".
The world's focus has shifted to the war in Ukraine, but two major new documentaries aim to throw the spotlight back on Afghanistan, and the people left behind by the United States' rapid withdrawal last year.

National Geographic's 'Retrograde' follows an Afghan general who tried in vain to hold back the Taliban advance in 2021, while Netflix's 'In Her Hands' tells the story of the country's youngest woman mayor, who had to flee as the Islamists took over.

"We've forgotten about this story -- when was the last time we discussed the war in Afghanistan, or read an article about it?" said "Retrograde" director Matthew Heineman.

"Obviously there's still some coverage of it, but... not that many people are talking about this country that we left behind."

Zarifa Ghafari, the former mayor spotlighted by "In Her Hands," told AFP that back under the Taliban, Afghanistan is "the only country around the world nowadays where a woman can sell their body, their children, anything else, but are not able to go to school."

But at international political meetings, "Afghanistan is out of those discussions."

Both movies begin in the months before the US withdrawal, as their subjects tried to build a safer and more egalitarian future for their country.

The two films end with their central characters forced to watch from abroad as the Taliban rapidly erases all their work.

"Retrograde" began as a documentary with rare inside access to US special forces.

In one early scene, US troops are shown having to destroy -- or retrograde -- their equipment and wastefully fire off excess ammunition that was sorely needed by their Afghan allies.

After the Americans left their base in Helmand, Afghan general Sami Sadat agreed to let Heineman's cameras stay and follow him, as he took charge of the ultimately doomed effort to stave off Taliban advances.

In one scene, Sadat -- stubbornly determined to rally his men to fight on as the situation crumbles around them -- chides his aide for bringing to his war office persistent reports of nearby Afghan troops downing their weapons.

"Every neon sign was saying 'stop, give up, this is over,' and he had this blind faith that maybe, just maybe, if he held on to Lashkar Gah or Helmand, that they could beat back the Taliban," recalled Heineman.

Sadat eventually had to flee, and the filmmakers shifted their lens again, to desperate scenes at Kabul airport as Afghans fought for spaces on the last American planes out.

"It was one of the most difficult things I've ever witnessed in my career," added Heineman, who was nominated for an Oscar for 2015's "Cartel Land."

"Discussions around wars in public policy and foreign policy, they're often talked about and discussed without the human element," said the director.

"One of the things I've tried to do throughout my career is take these large, amorphous subjects and put a human face to them."

- 'Murder' -

Former mayor Ghafari had survived assassination attempts and seen her father gunned down by the Taliban before she too left Afghanistan as the Islamists moved in.

"Talking about that moment, I'm still not able to stop crying... it was something that I really never wanted to do," said Ghafari, who drew the Taliban's ire by campaigning for girls' education after being appointed mayor of Maidan Shahr aged 24.

"I had some personal responsibilities, especially after the murder of my dad... to help secure my family."

The directors of "In Her Hands," which counts Hillary Clinton among its executive producers, returned to Afghanistan and filmed Ghafari's former driver Massoum, now unemployed and living under the Taliban.

In unsettling scenes, he is seen bonding with the same fighters who once attacked the car in which he was driving Ghafari.

"The story of Massoum represents the story of all Afghanistan's crisis... why people are feeling betrayed," said Ghafari.

- 'Share their pain' -

Though the conflicts in Afghanistan and Ukraine are vastly different in nature, both films offer a cautionary tale about what can happen once the West's focus shifts.

"Obviously, that's happened throughout history, and will continue to happen long into the future. And so what can we learn from this experience?" said Heineman.

Ghafari said: "Whatever happens in Ukraine and happened in Ukraine, it's the same thing that we have been going through for like 60 years.

"The same thing, again and again. So we share their pain."

'Forgotten' Afghan stories highlighted in two new films from Netflix, Nat Geo

Time and again, the popular American sitcom The Simpsons has shocked everyone with its strange predictions. Recently, internet sleuths were left shocked as Tesla CEO and the richest man on earth, Elon Musk, claimed that the famous sitcom even predicted his dramatic takeover of the microblogging site years ago.

On Saturday, Elon tweeted a photo from the Simpsons' 2015 episode and claimed how the show seemingly predicted his takeover.

"Simpson’s predicts I buy Twitter S26E12," the 51-year-old billionaire tweeted.
Episode 12 of season 26, titled 'The Musk Who Fell to Earth,' shows Lisa Simpson feeding some baby birds outside her home in a small birdhouse that reads, "Home Tweet Home." While she feeds and plays with them, a bald eagle flies in and eats all of them.

After eating all the birds, the large eagle flies high in the sky. A rocket ship arrives, and the fire coming out of the aircraft burns the eagle, which is also an emblem of the USA.
