Hollywood '80s nostalgia soared at San Diego Comic-Con Thursday as Tom Cruise swooped in to unveil the new 'Top Gun' while Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed why he'll be back for an explosive-looking 'Terminator' sequel.

A-lister Cruise surprised an ecstatic crowd at the world's largest pop culture convention in California with first footage of the long-awaited sequel to the 1986 smash action film that made him a household name.

Describing ' Top Gun: Maverick' as a "love letter to aviation," Cruise introduced clips of his ageing pilot still launching jets off aircraft carriers, refusing to retire despite failing to rise up the ranks.

The aerial shots were "all real" and the film -- out next summer -- is the result of working closely with US Navy officials, Cruise said, adding: "I really wanted to give you all an experience of what it is to be inside that aircraft."

The original 1986 'Top Gun,' in which Cruise played a hotshot US Navy pilot who has a dangerous and reckless flying style, was a huge commercial hit.
The new trailer featured familiar images of Cruise's Pete ' Maverick' Mitchell racing a motorcycle in his iconic aviator sunglasses, and belting out tunes with friends at a bar.

Addressing the long wait since the original, which was partly filmed in San Diego, Cruise said: "Thirty-four years you guys have been very patient with me, and I felt it was my responsibility to finally really deliver for you."

Cruise's shock appearance came at the end of a presentation for another Paramount sequel -- 'Terminator: Dark Fate.'

Star Arnold Schwarzenegger said he was "addicted" to the killer cyborg franchise that "really launched my action movie career."

"Of course I needed to come back," said the former bodybuilder and California governor, who has featured in four of the five "Terminator" movies to date.

- 'I hunt Terminators' -

But it was the return of Linda Hamilton that dominated both the exclusive footage shown to attendees, and the cast discussion in Comic-Con's cavernous Hall H which also featured director Tim Miller.

Hamilton, 62, reprises her famous role as Sarah Connor -- who she first depicted in the 1984 original, but left after 1991 blockbuster 'Terminator 2' -- and age does not appear to have slowed her down one bit.

Clips from the upcoming sequel showed an athletic Hamilton leaping from a vehicle to confront two super-powered, shape-shifting robots with an array of weapons including a gun, a bazooka and a grenade.

"My name is Sarah Connor. I hunt Terminators," she announces in the footage.

Hamilton told the packed audience how she had been hesitant because the first two films felt "very intact," but had decided to come back so she could "rock it as a woman of a certain age."

James Cameron, who also returns to the franchise as producer for the first time since 'Terminator 2,' appeared via videolink from the futuristic set of the 'Avatar' sequels.

He confirmed that Eddie Furlong, who portrayed John Connor as a teenager in 'Terminator 2,' will also reprise his role.

Director Tim Miller said the new 'Terminator,' out November 1, would be R-rated following fan demand for a darker, grittier sequel.

HBO and the BBC wrapped up proceedings in Hall H with a Q&A for their forthcoming television adaptation of young adult fantasy novels 'His Dark Materials.'

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ruth Wilson and James McAvoy star in the show released this fall, set in author Philip Pullman's vision of a parallel universe ruled by a dogmatic dictatorship called the Magisterium.

Religious bodies have condemned the text as an attack by atheist Pullman on the Roman Catholic Church.

"I don't know if it's purely Catholic," said Wilson. "Obviously Philip was probably referencing that in the books, but for me it's more about an authoritarian kind of dictatorship."

BBC executive Jane Tranter said: "It doesn't equate to any particular church or form of religion in our world."

A source close to the former couple told RadarOnline: "Tom is behind this and what he wants is as good as law. Tom made the call and Connor followed."

Apparently, Connor "worships the ground his father walks on" and will never go against his dad's wishes as reported by The Sun.

Tom and Nicole, when married, adopted two kids, namely Isabella and Connor. Tom retained the custody of the kids after his divorce with Nicole.

Connor was earlier a DJ who is now into deep sea fishing. Tom apparently really likes his future daughter-in-law and is happy that Connor is marrying a fellow Scientologist.

Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie to work on two 'Mission Impossible' films back-to-back

The Hollywood heartthrob will not take this lightly.

Author Lee Child feels that Tom Cruise is too short to play the character Jack Reacher in a TV adaptation of the hit films. The Hollywood star had played the iconic character in two films made on Reacher.

Lee Child's books on which the movies were based describe Reacher as a former US Army who is 6ft, 5in tall and has hands the size of dinner plates.

Originally when Tom was cast as Reacher in the films, fans had complained that Tom didn’t suit the character due to his height being just 5ft 7in.

In a talk with BBC, Lee revealed: "Cruise, for all his talent, didn't have that physicality," as he announced that a deal had been signed to make a new streaming show on the character.

He continued: "I really enjoyed working with Cruise. He's a really, really nice guy. We had a lot of fun. But ultimately the readers are right. The size of Reacher is really, really important and it's a big component of who he is.

"The idea is that when Reacher walks into a room, you're all a little nervous just for that first minute... so what I've decided to do is – there won't be any more movies with Tom Cruise. Instead, we're going to take it to Netflix or something like that. Long form streaming television, with a completely new actor."

He added: "And I want all those readers who were upset about Tom Cruise to help me out – participate in choosing the right actor for the TV series. We're rebooting and starting over and we're going to try and find the perfect guy."

Tom Cruise made his debut as Jack Reacher in 2012, in the film directed and adapted by Christopher McQuarrie. It received mostly positive reviews from critics. However, the sequel – ‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back’ received mixed reviews.

In a tell-all piece published in New York magazine, Nicole revealed how she fell in love with Tom, married him for love and ended up being protected all along the years of marriage. The two married while shooting for film ‘Days of Thunder’, married in 1990, adopted a son and daughter before ending their marriage after 11 years of togetherness.

Opening up on her relationship with then partner, Nicole said, "Being married to Tom Cruise at 22 is something I'm always reluctant to talk about, because I'm married now to the man who is my great love [Keith Urban], and it almost feels disrespectful. I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. I would work, but I was still very much cocooned."

She added, "That said, I got married very young, but it definitely wasn't power for me -- it was protection. So when I came out of it at 32, 33, it's almost like I had to grow up."

Nicole is now married to country singer Keith Urban with whom she shares two daughters. Tom married Katie Holmes and has a daughter with her but they broke up and he is currently single.

Nicole will next be seen in the role of journalist Gretchen Carlson in a film about Roger Ailes, the late chairman and chief executive officer of Fox News. Gretchen filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Roger in 2016 and received a reported $20 million settlement and a public apology from Fox's parent company, 21st Century Fox. Roger died in 2017, weeks after the allegations came to fore.

Nicole Kidman says marriage to Tom Cruise protected her from sexual harassment

Even 'Mission Impossible' star Tom Cruise would baulk at the task facing Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel after Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix.

The German's hopes of winning a fifth Formula One title this season moved away from slim and closer to non-existent at Suzuka.

Lewis Hamilton's pole-to-flag victory, the Briton's sixth win in seven races and ninth of the season, delivered another hammer blow to a rival whose challenge has swiftly self-destructed.

Vettel is now 67 points behind his Mercedes rival with four races -- worth a maximum 100 points -- to go.

The battle between the two four-times champions looks effectively over, even if there is still fighting talk from Maranello.

"I know that the situation looks impossible," Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene said on Sunday. "But our job sometimes is to challenge the impossible.

"This is what we are going to do and we try to do for the future four races."

In fact, it could all be over in two weeks' time at the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, where a win with Vettel finishing lower than second is all Hamilton needs to seal the deal with three races to spare.

"You say nearly (done), so obviously there is still a chance," said Vettel, cutting a resigned figure as he spoke to reporters.

"At the last couple of races we made it a bit too easy for them but also credit to them as they executed well, which is the name of the game.

"We need to look after ourselves and do our bit the next couple of races and then we see."

Ferrari's campaign has unravelled spectacularly as the season has worn on, with what appeared set to be a titanic battle of two four-time champions instead turning into a one-horse race.

Mistakes from both Vettel and the Italian team, as well as strategy blunders such as a failed tyre gamble in qualifying at Suzuka, have cost them dear.

They no longer have the fastest car, with Mercedes locking out the front row and finishing in one-two formation in the last two races.

Hamilton is also in the form of his life and has to be favourite for victory again in Austin, where he has won every race bar one since the Texan track joined the calendar in 2012.

Vettel`s highest finish since his win in Belgium at the end of August has been third and he will need to win at least the next two, with Hamilton failing to score, for any miracle to look remotely possible.

Still, neither Mercedes nor Hamilton are taking anything for granted.

"A DNF (non-finish) and the consequent bad result suddenly wipes off a large chunk of your points," said Mercedes boss Toto Wolff.

"I know from the probability standpoint it doesn't look likely, but this is motor racing.

"I've seen many black swans swimming across the pond in my life... that's why I'd rather wait until it's really done."

"This is what we are going to do and we try to do for the future four races." In fact, it could all be over in two weeks' time at the U.S. "We need to look after ourselves and do our bit the next couple of races and then we see." Formula One: Mission impossible for Vettel as Hamilton nears fifth title

While filming for the upcoming film, 'Mission: Impossible - Fallout,' Tom Cruise took his daring stunts to a new level—25,000 feet above the earth.

Cruise, performing for the latest installment in the secret government agent series, completed the HALO (high altitude, low-open) jump for a scene in the film.

These jumps are used by the military and required significant training on the part of Cruise.

To practice the jump, a wind machine was built to allow for rehearsals. When the time came to film, Cruise was required to breathe pure oxygen 20 minutes before the jumps to prevent decompression sickness. Jumping out of a plane traveling at 165 miles per hour, Cruise was then filmed as he plummeted downward at 200 miles per hour.

Multiple jumps, timed at sunset for the night scene, were required to get the right shot.

'Mission: Impossible - Fallout' is the sixth film in the installment starring Cruise and hits U.S. theaters July 27.
