<p>It appears to be the ‘layoff season’ in the United States, as a Mississippi-based furniture company abruptly fired all of its 2,700 of its employees ahead of Thanksgiving, according to multiple media reports. Employees were reportedly sent an email or a text message asking them to not come to work the next day.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“At the instruction of the board of directors…we regret to inform you that due to unforeseen business circumstances, the company has been forced to make the difficult decision to terminate the employment of all its employees, effective immediately, on November 21,” said the United Furniture Industries (UFI), in one of the messages sent to workers, reported the New York Post.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The messages were sent right before midnight on November 21 while several employees were asleep, said a report by the Guardian. However, the “over-the-road drivers” that were out of delivery were an exception to the immediate termination and were told that they will be paid for the rest of the week but they should “return equipment, inventory and delivery documents,” immediately, said the New York post citing the memo.&nbsp;</p>

Employees were reportedly sent an email or a text message asking them to not come to work the next day. “At the instruction of the board of directors…we regret to inform you that due to unforeseen business circumstances, the company has been forced to make the difficult decision to terminate the employment of all its employees, effective immediately, on November 21,” said the United Furniture Industries (UFI), in one of the messages sent to workers, reported the New York Post. <p>A passenger was rescued from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday evening after falling overboard from a cruise ship. Some officials of the US Coast Guard (USCG) were quick to cite the rescue as an event nothing short of a "Thanksgiving miracle".&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Thursday evening, the coast guard located a 28-year-old man in the sea about 20 miles south of Southwest Pass, Louisiana, after he reportedly fell overboard the New Orleans-to-Mexico Carnival valor cruise ship on Wednesday evening.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Carnival officials told CNN that the man was reported missing on Thanksgiving Day after he walked away from his sister at an onboard bar "to use the bathroom". The man never returned. Soon, his sister alerted the Cruise ship officials, following which the latter alerted the Coast Guard about the missing passenger. The Coast Guard swiftly launched a rescue operation.</p>

<p>"At 8:25 p.m., a Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-60 Jayhawk aircrew rescued the 28-year-old male who had fallen overboard from the Carnival Valor on Wednesday evening. The aircrew was vectored into the area by the bulk carrier CRINIS who had observed a person in the water. The Jayhawk aircrew hoisted the man onto the helicopter and transferred him to awaiting emergency medical services at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport," the US Coast Guard said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

If not for the alert crew aboard the motor vessel Crinis, this case could have had a much more difficult ending.”</p>

<p>Top US scientist Anthony Fauci had warned that Americans should brace for &nbsp;"surge upon a surge" in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/positive-test-rate-of-11-frances-schools-remain-open-346698">COVID-19 </a>cases as people travellers return home from Thanksgiving holidays.</p>

<p>Amid the rise in cases, US firm Moderna said it would file requests for emergency authorization of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/in-europe-before-the-end-of-2020-pfizer-biontech-files-for-eu-approval-of-coronavirus-vaccine-346707">vaccine </a>in the United States and Europe with American pharma giant Pfizer and Germany's BioNTech applying for approvals last week.</p>

<p>The US Food and Drug Administration (<strong>FDA</strong>) said its vaccine committee will sit on December 10 to discuss the approval for emergency use authorization.</p>

<p>"The <strong>FDA </strong>recognizes that transparency and dialogue are critical for the public to have confidence in COVID-19 vaccines," it said, adding,"I want to assure the American people that the FDA's process and evaluation of the data for a potential Covid-19 vaccine will be as open and transparent as possible."</p>
