Working on baking sheet, remove giblets and neck of turkey from cavities. Reserve neck and discard giblets. Using paper towels, pat turkey dry. Stuff half of onions and thyme into main cavity.&nbsp;<br />
&nbsp;Heat oven to 375°F. Tie turkey legs together with kitchen twine. Tuck wing tips underneath body (this will prevent them from burning). Rub turkey with butter (or oil) and season with 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper.<br />
Place turkey neck, carrots, celery, and remaining onions and thyme in large roasting pan. Place roasting rack in pan and place turkey on top.<br />
Roast turkey until thermometer inserted into thickest part of thigh registers 165°F, 2 1/2 to 3 hours. (Cover turkey loosely with foil if it browns too quickly, and add broth to pan if vegetables begin to scorch.)<br />
Carefully tilt turkey to empty juices from cavity into pan. Transfer turkey to carving board or cutting board set in rimmed baking sheet (to catch juices while carving). Cover loosely with foil and let rest at least 25 minutes. Reserve pan and contents to make gravy. Carve and garnish turkey as desired. Serves 12.<br />

Remove and discard vegetables, thyme and neck from roasting pan. Strain pan drippings into fat separator (or measuring cup); let stand 5 minutes so fat rises to top. Leaving fat behind (or spooning it off if not using separator), pour juices from bottom into large (4-cup) measuring cup.&nbsp;<br />
Place empty roasting pan across 2 stove burners on medium-high. Add wine and cook, stirring and scraping up any browned bits, 1 minute.<br />
Pour wine mixture into measuring cup with pan juices and add enough broth to make 4 cups liquid total.<br />
Melt butter in large saucepan on medium. Sprinkle flour over top and cook, whisking, until deep brown, 4 to 5 minutes.<br />

<p>US retailers are&nbsp;expected&nbsp;to ring up record sales on Super&nbsp;Saturday&nbsp;this year, as fewer&nbsp;days than usual between Thanksgiving and&nbsp;Christmas&nbsp;have squeezed shoppers to finish their purchases.</p>

<p>In recent years, the&nbsp;Saturday&nbsp;before&nbsp;Christmas&nbsp;has seen a late surge in shopper traffic. With retailers maintaining deep discounts late into the holiday&nbsp;season, total sales on Super&nbsp;Saturday&nbsp;have edged closer to Black Friday, the&nbsp;day&nbsp;after Thanksgiving which traditionally kicks off the season in November.</p>

<p>Many retail consultants and analysts estimate the surge will bump Super&nbsp;Saturday&nbsp;into the&nbsp;biggest&nbsp;shopping&nbsp;day&nbsp;this year.</p>

<p>Craig Johnson, president at retail consultancy Customer Growth Partners, expects people to spend $34 billion this year on Super&nbsp;Saturday. These estimates include in-store and online purchases but exclude sales generated at gas stations, restaurants, and automobile dealers. In comparison, Black Friday&nbsp;generated $31.5 billion in sales, he said.</p>

<p>"Consumer demand remains strong," Johnson said. "While mall traffic is weak, those that are going to stores are buying more."</p>

<p>Despite slowing global growth,&nbsp;US&nbsp;consumer spending is benefiting from wage growth and a strong labor market, retail consultants and analysts said.</p>

<p>Also, prices have remained steady instead of rising as widely&nbsp;expected, they said, which has spurred spending. According to an analysis, retailers including Walmart Inc and Amazon.com Inc&nbsp;held prices steady for many popular holiday&nbsp;products sold online despite pressure from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-heaps-another-5-tariff-on-chinese-goods-in-latest-tit-for-tat-escalation-245211">US&nbsp;tariffs</a> on Chinese imports.</p>

<p>Many retailers are responding to the late surge in spending by keeping stores open for longer in the&nbsp;days&nbsp;before&nbsp;Christmas. They have also added more staff in stores this year, reversing a trend that saw more workers being added to warehouses to ship online orders.</p>

<p>With store shoppers becoming more deliberate about their purchases, retailers' investments in improving the customer experience is resulting in stronger sales, analysts said.</p>

<p>"The shoppers that are coming into the store during the holidays want the personal touch...otherwise they'd be online," said Andrew Challenger, vice president at placement firm <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-%26-economy/us-job-growth-seen-picking-up-unemployment-rate-falling-164155">Challenger, Gray &amp;&nbsp;Christmas&nbsp;Inc</a>. "They want somebody to guide them through the inventory and in some ways help them select the right products at the right prices," he said.</p>

<p>Target said it is giving employees in stores a serious bump in hours, investing an extra $50 million into the effort. Similarly, Walmart's holiday&nbsp;strategy this year has also focused on customer service improvements.</p>

<p>For instance, its Check Out With Me feature, which allows; shoppers paying by credit card to skip out on long lines by having employees equipped with cellular devices and bluetooth printers check them out anywhere in the store, is available in all big stores.</p>

<p>Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the 33-hour roundtrip, which White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said had been weeks in the making, was the administration's success in keeping it secret until shortly before the president left Afghanistan to return home.</p>

<p>Frequently wrong-footed by leaks and Trump's freewheeling use of Twitter, the White House informed only a tight circle of officials about the trip.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, Trump travelled to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida as scheduled, accompanied by the regular caravan of reporters which follows the president on all trips.</p>

<p>When those journalists waited for him to emerge for a Thursday afternoon conference call with the troops, per his official schedule, they learnt that overnight he had flown the 13,400 km (8,331 miles) to Afghanistan to visit them in person.</p>

<p>"It is a dangerous area and he wants to support the troops," Grisham told a small group of correspondents aboard Air Force One on Wednesday evening, explaining why the White House had concealed Trump's true movements.</p>

<p>Only hours before, that second group of reporters had secretly gathered at a parking lot near the Joint Base Andrews outside Washington, a regular departure spot for Trump, from which they were driven in minivans into the complex.</p>

<p>They had been told ahead of time that Trump would be travelling incognito to an undisclosed location.</p>

<p>Once inside the base, all smartphones and any devices that could send a signal were confiscated and not returned until at least two hours after Trump's arrival at Bagram, the largest US base in Afghanistan.</p>

<p>"The Taliban wants to make a deal and we are meeting with them," Trump told reporters after arriving in Afghanistan on Thursday.</p>

<p>"We say it has to be a ceasefire and they didn't want to do a ceasefire and now they want to do a ceasefire, I believe. It will probably work out that way," he said.</p>

<p>Trump cancelled peace negotiations in September after the militant group claimed responsibility for an attack in Kabul that killed 12 people, including an American soldier.</p>

<p>Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the hardline Islamist insurgent group, said on Friday they were "ready to restart the talks".</p>

<p>"Our stance is still the same. If peace talks start, it will be resumed from the stage where it had stopped," Mujahid told Reuters.</p>

<p>Taliban leaders have told Reuters that the group has been holding meetings with senior US officials in Doha since last weekend, adding they could soon resume formal peace talks.</p>

<p>"We are hoping that Trump's visit to Afghanistan will prove that he is serious to start talks again. We don't think he has not much of a choice," said a senior Taliban commander on conditions of anonymity.</p>

<p>Trump did not answer reporters' questions when he returned on Friday morning to Florida, where he is spending the US Thanksgiving holiday weekend away from Washington.</p>

<p>There are currently about 13,000 US forces as well as thousands of other NATO troops in Afghanistan, 18 years after a US-led coalition invaded the country following September&nbsp;11, 2001, al Qaeda attacks on the United States.</p>

<p>About 2,400 US service members have been killed in the course of the Afghan conflict.</p>

<p>A draft accord agreed in September would have thousands of American troops withdrawn in exchange for guarantees that Afghanistan would not be used as a base for militant attacks on the United States or its allies.</p>

<p>Still, many US officials doubt the Taliban could be relied upon to prevent al Qaeda from again plotting attacks against the United States from Afghan soil.</p>

<p>Branick ordered the departures on the eve of the Thanksgiving holiday out of fear heat from the&nbsp;fire&nbsp;would ignite&nbsp;petrochemical&nbsp;tanks at the site.&nbsp;Firefighters were spraying water on the spherical tanks containing butane and other fuels to keep them cool, officials said.</p>

<p>The mandatory evacuation covers Port Neches and Groves, and portions of nearby Nederland and Port Arthur,&nbsp;Texas, officials said. State police would patrol the communities to prevent looting, Branick said.</p>

<p>The plant sits on a 218-acre (88.22-hectare) site located about 90 miles (145 km) east of Houston. It processes&nbsp;petrochemicals used to make synthetic rubber and resins, and a gasoline additive. TPC is nestled among several other chemical complexes that were not affected by the flames.</p>

<p>Peyton Keith, a TPC spokesman, said&nbsp;fire&nbsp;officials were determined to let the&nbsp;fire&nbsp;in a butadiene processing unit burn itself out, and were attempting to keep the flames from spreading. He could not say when the&nbsp;fire&nbsp;could be extinguished.</p>

<p>Back in Washington on Veterans Day, he failed to visit Arlington National Cemetery, saying later that he was "extremely busy" but admitting that he should have.</p>

<p>He was then asked whether he knew the timing: "I do, but can't tell you. You're the last people I can tell," he told reporters.</p>

<p>The bitter Sino-US&nbsp;trade war remains the biggest concern for markets, with signs of weakening corporate profits, steep sell-off in tech stocks and rising US&nbsp;interest rates encouraging investors to take money off the table before year-end.</p>

<p>The United States and China have slapped import duties on each others' goods in a tit-for-tat tariff war that investors worry could put the brakes on global trade and growth.</p>

<p>Markets will also pay close attention to manufacturing activity reports from Japan, Europe and the United States due over the coming week or so.</p>

<p>"PMIs have held up reasonably well so far but if they trend lower it could add to the nervousness," AMP's Oliver said.</p>

<p>The synchronised global expansion that began roughly two years ago has now plateaued, and fresh signs are emerging of a weakening outlook. Global trade volumes are still increasing although at a slower pace.</p>

<p>Moreover, leading economic indicators monitored by the OECD have weakened since the start of the year and point to slower expansion ahead for the United Kingdom and the euro area.</p>

<p><strong>All-weather currency</strong></p>

<p>The Federal Reserve has stayed on its tightening path after ending seven years of near-zero interest rates in December 2015 that took the Fed funds rate to the current 2.00 to 2.25 percent. Investors expect the Fed to go again in December.</p>

<p>In response to the tightening, the US&nbsp;dollar has outperformed most of its peers this year with its index against a basket of major currencies up almost 5 percent. In comparison the Japanese yen is flat so far in 2018.</p>

<p>Marios Hadjikyriacos, analyst at broking firm XM.Com, said the greenback is currently an "all weather currency."</p>

<p>"It can shine both in risk-off sessions given its status as the world's reserve asset, and on risk-on days as wide yield differentials brighten its carry appeal," he said.</p>

<p>The dollar index was last off slightly at 96.64 while the yen inched higher to 112.99 following two straight sessions of losses.</p>

<p>Elsewhere, the euro rose on hopes that the Italian budget dispute would be resolved even as the European Commission took its first step toward disciplining Italy over its deficit. It was last at $1.1396.</p>

<p>Oil reversed early gains although prices were still well above one-year lows touched earlier this week.</p>

<p>US&nbsp;crude futures were last down 16 cents at $54.47 a barrel after hitting a one-year low of $52.77 on Tuesday. Brent eased 18 cents to $63.30 from the last close and well off Tuesday's trough of $61.71.</p>

<p>Gold was firmer, with spot prices at $1,226.5 an ounce.</p>
