India are yet to shed their "poor travellers" tag but head coach Ravi Shastri feels that it's unfair to pick on one particular side when most of the nations have fared poorly on away tours.

India have lost two away Test series in 2018, against South Africa (1-2) and England (1-4). This was after both tours were seen as best chance for Virat Kohli's men to set the poor overseas record straight.

Asked how important it is for India to win the series in Australia, Shastri said: "You have got to learn from your mistakes. When you go overseas and when you look at teams that travel around now, there aren't too many sides (that travel well).

"Australia did for some time in the 90's and during the turn of century. South Africa did it for a while and other than these two,in the last five-six years, you tell me which team has travelled well. Why pick on India?" questioned Shastri.

Questioned whether he or skipper Kohli has spoken to the team as to why they lost in South Africa and England, Shastri said that it was all about "seizing big moments".

"We have spoken about seizing the big moments. If you look at the Test matches, the scoreline really doesn't tell you the real story. There were some real tight Test matches and we lost some big moments badly, which cost us the series at the end of it.

"It could have been an hour in a session over four days whether it was SA or England. Either as a batsman or a bowler and see what happens after that," the coach said in his team's defence.

Shastri refused to believe that Australian team has lost its aura after what all happened during the past few months.

"I don't think so. I think once you have a sporting culture in you, you will always have that. I have always believed that no team is weak at home. We might have three or four players not playing when a team comes to India God forbid but if anyone thinks it's a weak team, you will be surprised.

"Similarly, we are taking no prisoners and we want to go out and put our best foot forward, focussing on our game rather than focussing outside," he sounded cautious.

He is confident that his pacers will enjoy bowling on Australian pitches.

"I think they (pacers) should enjoy bowling on these pitches if it's like the pitches we have seen in the past. It's important to stay fit as a unit."

Shastri broadly dropped a hint that injured Hardik Pandya's absence robs them a chance to play an extra bowler. Even former Australian batsman Mike Hussey recently spoke about how Pandya's absence can hurt India.

"One player we will miss is Hardik Pandya, who has had an injury. He gave us that balance as a bowler as well as batsman, which allowed us to play that extra bowler. Even now we have got to think twice.

Hopefully, he will get fit soon and if fast bowlers do well, we might not miss him then," the former all-rounder said.

Asked if this is the best chance for India's fast bowlers, Shastri said it will depend on if they can maintain "sustained intensity" for a long period of time.

"It doesn't matter what line-up they play as long as they are consistent. In the past, we have had one or two bowlers doing well in spells, but bowling as a unit for three, four or five hours with sustained intensity, if that comes into play, no matter which batting line-up you are playing against, you will be tested," he added.

England's left-arm spinner Jack Leach led a strong spin bowling display that put the tourists within three wickets of a series-clinching victory against Sri Lanka on an intriguing fourth day of the second test on Saturday.

Chasing 301 to win on a turning Pallekele track, Sri Lanka reached 226 for seven when rain ended play for the second consecutive day with the hosts still needing 75 to square the three-test series at 1-1.

Combative half-centuries from former captain Angelo Mathews and opener Dimuth Karunaratne had set Sri Lanka up nicely in their chase after Leach's brilliant spell of spin bowling with the new ball had reduced them to 26-3.

But off-spinner Moeen Ali and Leach, who has already taken a career-best 4-73 in an innings, brought England right back in the game by dismissing Mathews for 88 and Dilruwan Perera for two respectively in quick succession after the tea break.

Sri Lanka's hopes on the final day will rest on wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella, who was unbeaten on 27 at the close of play.

Leach had given England the ideal start when he lured Kaushal Silva out of his crease with a flighted delivery to be stumped for four.

Dhananjaya de Silva was out to a smart catch by Keaton Jennings at short leg for one while Kusal Mendis was also trapped lbw for the same score, with England overturning the umpire's not out decision on review.

Karunaratne made a dogged 57 and it was his fourth-wicket stand of 77 with the experienced Mathews that revived Sri Lanka's chase.

England wasted chances to dismiss Karunaratne and Mathews with all-rounder Ben Stokes the guilty fielder and off-spinner Moeen Ali the unfortunate bowler on both occasions.

Karunaratne, who made 63 in the first innings, was on 21 when his edge off Moeen flew past Stokes at slip and the batsman also successfully overturned a leg before decision off Adil Rashid on review.

Karunaratne was finally out to some brilliant fielding at short leg from Jennings, who anticipated a sweep shot from the batsman and moved smartly to his left to parry the ball to wicketkeeper Ben Foakes for a catch off Rashid.

Stokes missed a relatively easier chance when he dropped Mathews at slip with the batsman on seven. The right-hander made England pay dearly with another stand of 73 with Roshen Silva for the fifth wicket.

England missed a chance to dismiss Silva, who had top-scored for the hosts with 85 in the first innings, on 32 when they failed to review a not-out verdict to an lbw shout off Moeen. Replays showed it would have been overturned in their favour.

Moeen sent Silva back on 37 with England captain Joe Root opting to successfully review another not out decision for a bat-pad catch.

Mathews and Dickwella thwarted England further with an attacking 45-run stand for the sixth wicket before Moeen dismissed Mathews leg before.

England had batted for about 20 minutes in the morning before they were all out for 346 for a lead of 300. Foakes followed up his debut century during the win in Galle with an unbeaten 65.

Akila Dananjaya, who was reported for a suspect bowling action after the Galle test but is free to play, notched up career-best figures of 6-115 for the hosts.

ENG vs SL, 2nd Test, Day 4: Jack Leach's four-wicket haul brings England close in on series victory

Mike Hussey, who has a fair idea about the current crop of India players, feels that all-rounder Hardik Pandya's absence will "hurt" the visitors in the upcoming Test series against Australia.

The series starts on December 6 in Adelaide.

Pandya is undergoing rehabilitation after suffering a lower-back injury during the Asia Cup in Dubai last September.

"I think Hardik is a wonderful talent and I am sure his game style would have been suited to the Australian conditions. Add to that, the balance he offers the team with his all-round abilities, yes I think his absence will hurt India," Hussey told PTI in an exclusive interview.

India have a good chance of doing well against a depleted Australia but 'Mr Cricket' is confident that the home team's seasoned bowling attack will test some of the younger batsmen in the visiting team.

India are being dubbed as favourites in many quarters primarily due to the absence of Steve Smith and David Warner.

But India could face a different challenge with the likes of Prithvi Shaw, Rishabh Pant and Hanuma Vihari set to face Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon for the first time.

"I do think India have a good chance as they have an excellent team with some very good fast bowlers. However, I think Australia's bowling attack is world class and will challenge the Indian team, particularly the younger players in Australian conditions. Australia always play well at home and hence will be very hard to beat."

Virat Kohli remains the biggest threat to Australia having scored four hundreds during the 2014-15 series and Hussey reckoned that the home team bowlers need to be patient against the Indian skipper.

"The Australians will prepare well against Kohli, but it comes down to execution. In my view the Aussies need to be incredibly patient and disciplined for long periods of time against a world class player like Kohli," said the 43-year-old, who has played 79 Tests and 185 ODIs for Australia.

India's 1-4 series defeat against England will have no bearing on the Australia series as the scoreline is not an accurate representation of how well India competed, said the former left-hander.

"It's a completely new series in completely different conditions. I think India played some brilliant cricket in England but unfortunately, the results didn't go their way," opined Hussey.

The ball-tampering saga is a thing of past and Hussey has faith in the current team's abilities even though Smith and Warner's absence will continue to be a big factor.

"It has been a tumultuous period for Australian cricket both on and off the field but I think the controversy is behind us now and everyone involved can just focus fully on the cricket. Australia will of course miss Warner, Smith and Bancroft."

Unlike some of the experts who are still not convinced about Tim Paine's leadership skills, the current Test captain has Hussey's vote of approval.

"I wouldn't underestimate Tim Paine, he is an excellent competitor and will be up for the fight against India. Yes, he has the mental strength to lead this Australian side," he asserted.

There were talks about an early return of Smith and Warner but Hussey made it clear that he doesn't see that happening with the duo requiring to play Sheffield Shield to stage a Test comeback.

"Personally, I don't see that happening, however, I would love to see them integrated into domestic cricket earlier, in particular the Sheffield Shield competition."

The Indian bowling attack has been top notch in all away series but Hussey wants the Australian batsmen to look at the upcoming series as an opportunity to cement their place in the side.

"The batting will be tested against an excellent Indian attack but there are some great opportunities for Australian batters to cement a place in the team with some big runs. So motivation will be high."

Hussey doesn't believe in terms such as 'x-factor', which is a buzzword in cricketing sides across the globe.

"There doesn't need to be an x-factor player, Australia need all players down the list to contribute to the team cause and play their role well."

Australian cricket is going through transformation and a cultural review has been done, which has been critical of earlier teams' theory of "win at all costs".

Words like "Elite Honesty" adorn the dressing room walls but Hussey revealed that this is nothing new with Australian cricket teams, only that it's now out in public domain.

Has there been an over-correction? "No, I don't think there has been an over-correction as there were all these kind of statements and quotes around when I played also but ours weren't put out there in the public domain."

So will the Aussies sledge? Hussey replied: "There will be an adjustment period for the team with regards to how far they can push the line but they will compete very hard."

Hardik Pandya's absence will hurt India: Mike Hussey

Pakistan's cricketer Azhar Ali reacted after the bizarre run out in the second Test against Australia on Thursday. He said his 10-year-old son Ibtisam will definitely speak about it for a long time in a "funny way".

"My son is going to speak about it (the run out) for a long time and in a funny way," said Azhar of his son, who luckily for him arrived at the ground after his father's dismissal.

"Whenever I will say something about cricket he will surely come back to this incident."

Azhar, who lost his wicket after scoring 64 runs in the funniest way possible, anticipated some teasing for his brain-fade.

Pakistan took control of the Test setting a massive 538-run target for Australia with two days left but the highlight was the brain-fade run out.

The incident happened in Pakistan's innings when Azhar edged a Peter Siddle delivery towards the third man boundary.

Azhar thought the ball had crossed the rope and halted in the middle of the pitch to talk to fellow batsman Asad Shafiq.

But Mitchell Starc picked up the ball less than a yard from the boundary and threw it back to wicketkeeper Tim Paine, who ran Azhar out.

Azhar revealed he was discussing the swing of the ball with Shafiq as they chatted in the middle of the wicket.

"We were just discussing that the ball was swinging a bit late. We both didn't actually realise something like this could happen.

He further said, "The way the shot was hit to a fast bowler and the edge flew I thought it reached the boundary. But there is no excuse. Everyone was pulling our legs in the dressing room but at that moment it was a shock."

"We were not watching the ball and that was the reason I missed the whole sight of it. I wasn't happy with it and thankfully other batsmen did the job and we laughed about it afterwards. It is kind of disappointing and a shock but also funny."

Azhar denied there was any unsporting behaviour from Australian players in his dismissal.

"I don't think it was bad sportsmanship and I take full responsibility as I feel I was a bit ignorant. It was nothing at all as no one got in my way or distracted me.

"It was my own doing. I think the Aussies did the right thing."

My son will laugh on the funny run out against Australia, says Pak cricketer Azhar Ali

Medium pacer Mohammad Abbas took his maiden ten-wicket haul in a match to fire Pakistan to a 373-run win over Australia in the second Test in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

Abbas followed his 5-33 in the first innings with figures of 5-62 to wreck Australia for 164 after they were set a big 538-run target.

The win gave Pakistan a 1-0 win in the two-match series after Australia fought back to draw the first Test in Dubai last week.

This becomes Australia's heaviest defeat against Pakistan, beating the 356-run hammering at this same venue four years ago.

It was Abbas who destroyed Australia with a haul of 17 wickets in the series, becoming the first Pakistani fast bowler to take ten wickets in a Test since Mohammad Asif's feat against Sri Lanka at Kandy in 2006.

Abbas had jolted Australia with four wickets off just 23 balls while Yasir Shah finished with 3-45 to give Pakistan their tenth series win on the neutral venues of United Arab Emirates (UAE).

They have only lost one series, 2-0 to Sri Lanka last year, since being forced to play their home matches in UAE since 2009.

Pakistan were forced to play their home matches in UAE since attacks on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in March 2009.

Australia's batsmen had no answers to his accurate seam bowling under cloudy conditions at Sheikh Zayed Stadium as only Marnus Labuschagne (43), Travis Head (36) and Aaron Finch (31) offered some resistance.

Yasir dismissed number ten Jon Holland soon after lunch to hand Pakistan victory.

The first Test ended in a draw in Dubai last week.

Australian opener Usman Khawaja could not bat after suffering a recurrence of a knee injury during practice on Thursday.

Abbas jolted the Australians in the seventh over of the day when he removed a solid-looking Head, getting an edge to substitute wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan, deputising for Sarfraz Ahmed.

Sarfraz, who was hit on the helmet by a rising Mitchell Starc delivery on Thursday, had gone for a precautionary scan.

Head and Finch added 61 runs for the second wicket while Starc (28) and Labuschagne added 67 for the sixth wicket, but it only delayed the inevitable.

Abbas had Mitchell Marsh (five) and Finch (31) leg-before-wicket and dismissed Tim Paine for nought, before Yasir Shah removed Starc and Peter Siddle for three.

Australia had reached 155-7 at lunch with the writing very much on the wall.

Pakistan made 282 in their first innings and then bowled out Australia for a paltry 145, gaining a match-winning 137-run lead.

The highlights of Pakistan's batting in this match were 94 and 66 from opener Fakhar Zaman in his first Test while skipper Sarfraz returned to form with innings of 94 and 81.

Both the teams now play a series of three Twenty20 internationals with the first in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

Pak vs Aus, 2nd Test: Mohammad Abbas' 10-wicket haul destroys Australia for Pakistan's series win

Pakistan's medium pacer Mohammad Abbas took four wickets off just 23 balls to leave Australia reeling and his side on the brink of victory in the second Test on Friday.

Australia were 155-7 at lunch on the fourth day as 28-year-old Abbas followed up his first innings figures of 5-33 with 4-56.

Australia's batsmen had no answers to his accurate seam bowling under cloudy conditions at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

At the break Marnus Labuschagne was unbeaten on 43 runs and Nathan Lyon not out without scoring, meaning Pakistan need another two wickets to win the match and the two-match series.

The first Test ended in a draw in Dubai last week.

Australian opener Usman Khawaja was unlikely to bat after suffering a recurrence of a knee injury during practice on Thursday.

Debutant opener Fakhar Zaman and skipper Sarfraz Ahmed missed hundreds by six runs each but still revived Pakistan on the first day of the second and final Test in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

Fakhar and Sarfraz scored 94 each and helped Pakistan recover from 57-5 to a total of 282 after winning the toss and electing to bat on a slow turning pitch at Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

Before the close Pakistan grabbed two wickets, including that of Usman Khawaja for three, as Australia finished on 20-2, with Aaron Finch on 13 and nightwatchman Peter Siddle dismissed off the last ball of the day for four.

Australia trail Pakistan by 262 runs with eight wickets intact.

Fast bowler Mohammad Abbas had Khawaja -- who scored a fighting 141 to lead Australia's fightback for a draw in the first Test in Dubai last week -- caught behind for his 50th Test wicket in 10 Tests.

Abbas became joint second-fastest Pakistani to the milestone of 50 wickets with Waqar Younis, Mohammad Asif and Shabbir Ahmed. The record is held by team-mate Yasir Shah who completed 50 wickets in nine matches.

Abbas then trapped Siddle to finish on 9-2.

Sarfraz was frustrated to miss his fourth Test hundred but happy with the fightback.

"Yes, its disappointing to miss a hundred but I am happy the way we revived the innings and then got two wickets, including that of Khawaja, so for me it is an even position," said Sarfraz who was hit on the left forearm by a rising delivery from Mitchell Starc.

"At the moment I am feeling discomfort and if there is swelling tommorrow then we can summon reserve wicketkeeper as per the new rules," said Sarfraz.

Earlier Zaman and Sarfraz found form with fighting and innings-reviving knocks, taking the attack to the Australian bowlers after spinner Nathan Lyon had rocked Pakistan in the morning, reaching lunch with figures of 4-12.

Zaman hit eight boundaries and a six in his enterprising knock as he and Sarfraz added 147 runs. Zaman was trapped leg-before by leg-spinner Marnus Labuschagne for 94, becoming the fourth Pakistan batsmen to be dismissed in the 90s on his debut.

Sarfraz then holed out to Labuschagne, who finished with 3-45. Sarfraz hit seven boundaries in his 94.

In the first session, pace bowler Starc provided Australia with an early breakthrough in the third over when Mohammad Hafeez fell to a freakish catch at short leg by Labuschagne for four.

Lyon then took four wickets in six balls at the total of 57.

He dismissed Azhar Ali, caught and bowled for 15 in his fourth over, and next ball had Haris Sohail caught close to the wicket for nought.

In his next over, Lyon had Asad Shafiq caught at short leg and two balls later bowled Babar Azam, who had come dancing down the wicket.

Australia kept the same eleven from the drawn first Test in Dubai while Pakistan replaced injured Imam-ul-Haq and Wahab Riaz with Zaman and Mir Hamza.

Hamilton was far from convincing behind the stumps and apart from a few misses down the leg side he dropped Pant on 24 off Gabriel. Earlier Yadav, who lost his pace partner in debutant Shardul Thakur due to a groin strain on day one, picked all the three West Indian wickets to fall in the morning after the tourists started the day on 295-7. Roston Chase top-scored with 106 after West Indies elected to bat first. Chase, who started the day on 98, was eventually bowled by Yadav. Yadav soon got Gabriel on the very next ball to become the first Indian quick to get six wickets on home soil after Javagal Srinath's 6-45 against New Zealand at Mohali in 1999.

India have made just one change from their record win in Rajkot last week with debutant paceman Shardul Thakur coming in for Mohammed Shami, who has been rested.

Skipper Virat Kohli admitted that he would have also batted first as the world's top Test side eyes a series sweep.

"Not bothered of the toss but I would have batted first as well. We have to focus on this series, just focusing on repeating the things we did in the first game," said Kohli.

"Shami has been rested, he has played six Tests and has bowled a lot of overs."

WI vs Ind, 2nd Test, Day 1: West Indies are 86-3 at lunch

A case was filed on Friday against the fan, who breached security at the Hyderabad cricket ground, to take a selfie with India's skipper Virat Kohli.

The overenthusiastic fan, who even tried to kiss Kohli, belongs to Kadapa District of Andhra Pradesh.

Police inspector P Venkateswarlu said a case of trespassing was slapped against 19-year-old Mohammad Khan, who breached security cordon to get up close with Virat Kohli.

It happened an hour into the morning session when he climbed the barricade and sprinted around 70 metres towards Kohli.

The fan gave a tight hug to Kohli and managed to get the selfie. He did not get the kiss — security managed to stop him (and Virat pulled back) before he could plant a kiss on Virat's cheek.

Virat looked very upset while security personnel overpowered the youngster and hauled him off the field.

Pakistan's veteran cricketer Mohammad Hafeez slammed a ton against Australia in the first day of opening Test in Dubai to mark a stunning return to the Test format after a gap of two years.

Hafeez played a 126-run knock, which included 15 fours, before losing his wicket to Australia's medium pacer Peter Siddle. He put on a solid 205-run opening stand with Imam-ul-Haq who made a career-best 76.

The 37-year-old took to Twitter to celebrate his century, he wrote, "ALLAH is the best PLANNER."

While addressing the media he revealed his wife had persuaded him not to quit the sport.

He also mentioned that legendary Shoaib Akhtar too stepped in to persuade him he still had a role to play.

"I could have taken a drastic step but I was stopped by my wife and then Shoaib Akhtar phoned me as well."

"I was mentally disturbed after being dropped from the Asia Cup team," said Hafeez of last month's axing from the one-day side.

PAK vs AUS, 1st Test, Day 1: Pakistan opt to bat against Australia

Kuldeep Yadav's five-wicket haul helped team India to win the first Test against West Indies on Saturday.

Following on, the tourists were all out at a score of 196 runs and suffered an innings and 272-run defeat in Rajkot. The match ended early in the final session and Windies now trail the two-match series 1-0.

They were dismissed for 181 in their first innings in response to India's 649-9 declared.

West Indies' opener Kieran Powell started off well and fought a lonely battle as the team kept losing wickets from the other side. Powell scored 83 runs to offer some resistance to the team and his knock included eight fours and four sixes.

Kuldeep soon took control with his left-arm wrist spin in the afternoon session to rattle West Indies' top and middle order. He is playing just his fourth Test since making his debut last year against Australia.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who returned figures of 4-37 in West Indies' first innings, had sent back stand-in skipper Kraigg Brathwaite for 10 before lunch and then got Bishoo.

Ravindra Jadeja, who scored his maiden international century during India's only innings, took the final wicket of Shannon Gabriel for four as the hosts celebrated an utterly dominant win over the former cricketing powerhouse.

Ind vs WI, 1st Test: Kuldeep Yadav shines as India defeat West Indies by an innings and 272 runs

Indian captain Virat Kohli, who is batting on 120, slammed his 24th Test ton on day two of the first Test against West Indies in Rajkot on Friday. He became the quickest batsman to reach 24 Test centuries after the great Donald Bradman.

Virat found a determined ally in 21-year-old Rishabh Pant, who missed out on century after a blistering 92-run knock, to put together 133 runs for the fifth wicket.

Despite Kohli's spectacle, the highlight of the session was Rishabh Pant who resumed at 17, went all guns blazing. His entertaining innings was laced with eight fours and four sixes.

Eying his second Test hundred in his fourth Test Pant attempted another six over mid-wicket, failed to pick the googly and top-edged it for a simple catch to Keemo Paul at backward point.

The first session of the day was all about the partnership between Virat and Rishabh Pant that propelled India to a mammoth score as India reached 506 for five at lunch.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, on 19, was batting alongside Kohli at the break. Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo has claimed two wickets.

Ind vs WI, 1st Test, Day 2: Virat and Pant shine as India were 506-5 at lunch

Ravindra Jadeja finally scored his maiden century after almost a decade in international cricket and the Indian all-rounder says being calm in the nervous 90s helped him reach the 'special' milestone.

Jadeja had scored an 86 and 90 in Tests against England but could never cross the hurdle in the previous 37 Tests in addition to the 140 ODIs he has featured in.
Fittingly, he achieved the feat at his home ground and dedicated the innings to his late mother.

He was in the 90s with number eleven Mohammad Shami but that did not put extra pressure on him.

"It is very special because in the past I had gotten to 80s and 90s but was not able to convert. Today, I was not worried, just did not want to play any loose shot. I kept talking to Umesh and Shami and told myself that I needed to play till I score 100," said Jadeja after reaching three figures in the final over before tea when India declared at 649 for nine.

His famous sword celebration followed the hundred with his teammates applauding in the dressing room.

Jadeja was also in the thick of things during the West Indies innings. It turned out to be a comical incident but it could have easily embarrassed the home hero.

A terrible mix-up between Shimron Hetmyer and Sunil Ambris left both of them stranded at one end and Jadeja decided to walk than run to take the bails off. Seeing Jadeja's cheeky walk, Hetmyer ran to make his ground in desperation, confusing the Indian who suddenly stopped and threw at the stumps. Luckily for Jadeja, the ball hit the stumps and Hetmyer was run out.

"You saw what happened," said Jadeja explaining his thinking.

"I saw both batsmen were at the same end and I did not think that Hetmyer would start running in towards the other end in such hot conditions. I was relaxed and so thought I will walk to take the bails off. His effort (run) was good," added Jadeja, who laughed off the incident.

Talking about the last one month when he did well in the only Test he played in England before making an ODI comeback, Jadeja sounded satisfied.

"When you are not playing consistently, there is pressure. You want to make every opportunity count. That is what I thought in England also. Batting and bowling in Asia Cup was also good," he said.

"I just try to develop my game with every match. I have not played a lot in 2018. So, you just have to perform whenever you get the opportunity."

Asked why he needs to prove himself even after almost 10 years of international cricket, Jadeja came up with a witty response.

"Good you know that I have been playing for 10 years. I must have done something right if I have managed to play for that long. I don't know if you noticed that I did well in the 13 Tests we played at home the previous season," he said.

"My job is just to prove myself. Sometimes I miss out because of the team requirements. If there are more left-handers in the opposition eleven, then an off-spinner is preferred, if more right-handers are there than I am preferred," said the left-arm spinner.

He also had words of encouragement for the struggling the West Indies, saying "the young team will improve with every game".

Spectator turnout for the first Test has been modest and when asked about it, Jadeja felt it could be due to the unrelenting heat in Rajkot.

It was special: Jadeja after scoring maiden international ton

Indian bowlers rattled the West Indies first-innings reply after Ravindra Jadeja smashed his maiden international century as the hosts got a firm grip over the first Test on Friday.

The tourists were tottering at 94 for six at stumps, trailing India by 555 runs in their first innings on day two in Rajkot. Roston Chase, on 27, and Keemo Paul, on 13, were batting at close of play.

But it was the Indian batting that made the world's top side so dominant as they posted their highest total against the West Indies after declaring on 649-9 at tea. Skipper Virat Kohli hit a landmark ton, top-scoring with 139.

Fast bowler Mohammed Shami then struck early to get the two West Indian openers back in the pavilion for seven runs including stand-in-skipper Kraigg Brathwaite for two.

But Jadeja remained the star of the day after making an unbeaten 100. The left-handed batsman stuck around with the lower-order to demolish a toothless West Indian attack.

"Obviously after nine years of international cricket I am scoring a hundred, so it is a special moment," Jadeja, who made his international debut in 2009 and played his first Test in 2012, said.

"Whenever I reached 70-80 in the past I thought about my hundred, but threw my wicket away. I have made big hundreds in the domestic circuit, so I thought I can get hundreds in the international level too."

Jadeja -- playing his 38th Test -- also got a wicket after sending back Sunil Ambris, who had scored 114 not out in his side's only tour game last week, for 12.

The all-rounder though had a near-miss moment on the field when he playfully waited to run out Shimron Hetmyer who was scampering back to reach the non-striker's end.

Jadeja though hit the stumps with the batsman well short of the crease but his teasing act tested the nerves of the Indian fielders including Kohli.

"Both batsmen were at the same end, so I thought I could easily hit the stumps. I was just walking at the stumps, and I didn't think he (Hetmyer) will start running," jadeja said with a smile.

"I can't think what would have happened if I hadn't hit the stumps, but then I threw it and luckily it hit the stumps."

Earlier Kohli became the quickest batsman to reach 24 Test centuries since the great Donald Bradman in the morning session.

Kohli put together 133 runs for the fifth wicket with overnight partner Rishabh Pant, who made a quickfire 92.

Kohli, who started on his overnight score of 72, got to his hundred in his 123rd innings with a boundary off leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo. Bradman took just 66 innings to achieve the same feat.

India rammed home the advantage after 18-year-old opener Prithvi Shaw made 134 on day one to become their youngest batsman to score a century on debut.

The left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman Pant brought the morning alive with his attacking cricket as he hit eight fours and four sixes during his 84-ball blitz to flatten West Indies.

In response to that, West Indies were 94 for six at stumps, trailing India by 555 runs. Roston Chase, on 27, and Keemo Paul, on 13, were batting at the close of play against a persistent Indian bowling attack. Fast bowler Mohammed Shami took two wickets. Ind vs WI, 1st Test: Kohli, Jadeja ton-up as India dominate on Day 2

India's all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja slammed his maiden international century on Friday against West Indies in his 218th international match and 169th international innings. In his Test career, he has completed nine half-centuries and this was his first-ever century in any format of international cricket.

Jadeja made his One-day debut in 2009 against Sri Lanka and Test debut against England in 2012.

The 29-year-old had to wait till his 38th Test to reach three figures, whose previous highest score was 90, scored in a Test match against England in 2016.

Batting alongside with No.11 Mohammad Shami, he experienced the nervous 90s before finally getting to the milestone in final over before tea.

It has been a good last 30 days for the southpaw, who scored a gritty 86 in the final Test in England before making an impressive ODI comeback with the Asia Cup in Dubai.

Jadeja enthralled the sparse crowd at SCA stadium with aerial hits which came mainly off the spinners. He ended up with five boundaries and as many sixes.

Earlier, Kohli and Rishabh Pant (92 off 84) had taken India to 506 for five at lunch.

Kohli, who was 72 not out overnight, took time to knock off the 28 runs needed for yet another hundred while his partner Pant, who resumed at 17, went all guns blazing.
A second Test hundred in his fourth Test was for the taking but Pant, attempting another six over mid-wicket, failed to pick the googly and top-edged it for a simple catch to Keemo Paul at backward point. His entertaining innings was laced with eight fours and four sixes.

After Kohli's ton on day two of the first Test against West Indies in Rajkot on Friday, Sachin, took to Twitter to congratulate the skipper. Virat scored a total of 139 runs and his knock included 10 fours.

Sachin wrote, "Another outing, another century! A great habit to have. Keep it up."

There has been a constant comparison made between Virat and legendary Sachin Tendulkar and it is expected that Virat will definitely break all the existing records and will create new ones.

Once Gavaskar said, "Records are meant to be broken. While we know that some of Tendulkar's records are well nigh impossible to be able to get like 200 Test matches, nor anybody can reach 51 Test hundreds," Gavaskar said.

"But the manner in which Virat is batting, the record for (Tendulkar's) 49 hundreds looks possible."

West Indies pacer Kemar Roach is expected to miss the opening Test against India, following the death of his grandmother.

West Indies coach Stuart Law confirmed the news on Tuesday.

There are also reports that he will rejoin the squad midway through the first Test beginning on Thursday.

"Kemar is not back yet. He had a bereavement in the family and will be joining the team midway through the first Test," said coach Stuart Law.

"Kemar Roach is a very experienced fast bowler with great skill. He is one of our leaders. It is a big loss. Having said that, Shannon Gabriel has been outstanding in the last couple of Tests, that too in similar conditions to India."

Roach has played 48 Tests, taking 163 wickets at 28.31.

The coach, however, expressed confidence in the abilities of the pace attack comprising Gabriel (37 Tests), captain Jason Holder (34), Keemo Paul (1) and the uncapped Sherman Lewis, who replaced the injured Alzzarri Joseph.

Australian opener Matt Renshaw is a doubt for the series-opening Test against Pakistan after suffering a head injury in a tour match in Dubai.

Renshaw, who has a history of concussions, exited the match against a Pakistan 'A' side after being hit by a pull shot from batsman Abid Ali when fielding at short leg on Sunday.

Renshaw was wearing a helmet when he was struck in the side of the head. He pulled it off immediately and sat with his head in his hands before being examined by medical staff.

He came off the ground for further checks and was replaced in the lineup by Marnus Labuschagne.

Opening batsman Aaron Finch said Renshaw was in good spirits, but the selectors are likely to be cautious about playing the Yorkshire-born 22-year-old in the first Test starting on Sunday.

Renshaw suffered a concussion in a warm-up mishap before a Sheffield Shield match for Queensland in March and was subbed out of the game.

He was also withdrawn from a 2017 Test against Pakistan in Sydney having been hit while fielding just days after being struck by a bouncer when batting.

"He's okay," Finch told reporters. "It was a pretty heavy knock to the head there.

"He's been with the medical staff all afternoon but he seems in really good spirits. He's confident that his headaches are subsiding pretty quickly."

The Renshaw blow soured an otherwise positive day for Australia's batsmen with Finch, Shaun Marsh and younger brother Mitchell all spending valuable time in the middle as the tourists moved to 207 for two at the close of the second day's play, in reply to 278.

One-day specialist Finch, hoping to make his Test debut after his surprise selection in Tim Paine's squad, scored 54 in an 82-run opening stand with Usman Khawaja, while number three Shaun Marsh and Mitchell were unbeaten on 54 and 53 respectively.

"It was nice to get out in the middle after training away for the best part of a week and doing the hard yards," said 31-year-old Finch.

"It's still about playing my natural game which is quite aggressive generally."

"If we had won this, was this the best 11? We don't decide the 11 according to results. You are telling me that you could have played the best 11.
You tell me the best 11 and we will play that," Kohli said.

India have now lost the first two Tests against South Africa, which puts the three-match series beyond them.

There had been questions asked over India's selection. The biggest being why Rohit Sharma was picked over Ajinkya Rahane, the other being why Bhuvneshesh Kumar -- one of India's best bowlers in the first Test -- was dropped for the second.

"I am saying the loss obviously hurts but you make one decision and you got to back it. We don't sit here and say if you will fail in one game, you are not good enough to be at this level. Didn't we lose in India when we had the best 11 there?

"Whoever is picked should be good enough to do the job for the team. That is why we have got such a big squad. They are good enough to be at this level but you need to do that collectively as a team. You can't pinpoint and say which is the best 11. We have played with teams in the past which have looked really strong and lost," Kohli said.

Kohli was also asked if the team was losing because of all the chopping and changing -- India have fielded different teams (at least one change was made) in all the Test matches played under him.

"How many Test matches have we won out of 34? How many have we won? How many have we won? 21 wins. Two losses. How many draws? Does it matter? Wherever we play we try to do our best. I'm here to answer your questions, not to fight with you," Kohli countered.

It was helpfully pointed out after the conference that Kohli has actually won 20 of the 34 Tests played under his captaincy, not 21.

And that while Kohli might have snapped back at the reporters asking him the questions, sports journalists said the line of questioning was "provocative". And that, under the circumstances, Kohli handled himself well.

Having said that, Kohli had earlier been known to very often lose his cool. Most hilariously during the 2015 World Cup when he lost his shirt at a sports journalist because of a story done by someone else.

He'd gotten the two mixed up.

India lose Test, Kohli loses his cool

The day three play between India and South Africa was called off on Sunday after heavy rainfall continued to lash Cape Town.

After morning session was washed out, it was assumed that the teams could resume before the scheduled tea interval, as the rain stopped. But it was for less than half an hour.

On day 2, South Africa was able to build a sizeable second-innings lead after reaching 65 for the loss of two at stumps.

Hashim Amla and night-watchman Kagiso Rabada will seek tomorrow to extend the host's advantage of 142 runs with remaining eight wickets.

The South African seamers had bowled India out for 209 on a lively wicket offering plenty of assistance for the bowlers.

For India, Hardik Pandya played a blistering knock of 93 runs to save its drowning team which at one point were 92/7 after lunch.

The all-rounder proved his mettle by helping his team inch closer to South Africa's total of 286.

In the second innings, Hardik contributed with the ball as well by dismissing the Proteas openers at an early stage.
