Kerala High Court on Friday refused to put a ban on Sudipto Sen's controversial film The Kerala Story. A division bench of the Kerala High Court rejected a petition against the release of the controversial film. The petition sought a directive to cancel the ‘A’ certification granted to the movie by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The Kerala High Court division bench refused to stay the screening of the film The Kerala Story, whose trailer caused much uproar. The film's trailer claimed that tens of thousands of girls from non-Muslim communities have disappeared from Kerala and joined terror groups such as Islamic State.

After watching the trailer of the movie, a division bench of Justices N Nagaresh and Sophy Thomas said that it does not contain anything against Islam or Muslims as a whole but was about ISIS.

“What is against Islam? There is no allegation against the religion. The allegation is against ISIS,” the bench remarked.

“Going through the trailers of the movie, we find it does not contain anything offensive to any particular community as a whole. None of the petitioners have watched movie,” the Court noted in its order, said a Bar and Bench report.

The bench remarked that Hindu sanyasis are depicted as smugglers or rapists in umpteen movies but it has not led to any adverse consequences.

"There are umpteen number of movies where Hindu sanyasis are depicted as smugglers or rapists. Nothing happens, no one protests. Many such Hindi and Malayalam films are there," said Justice Nagaresh.

After hearing all parties at length, the court refused to the stay the release of the film and further noted that the CBFC has examined the movie and found it suitable for public exhibition.

"As provided by guidelines, the board has considered and examined the movie. From the statement of the Deputy Solicitor General, the producers have published a disclaimer that the film is fictionalised and dramatised. We are not inclined to pass an interim order restraining exhibition of film," the court said.

Rubbishing the claims made in the movie that about 32,000 women were converted and sent for terror missions, the petitioners termed it fictitious that has no connection with reality. The producer of "The Kerala Story" told Kerala High Court that the teaser of the movie, which claimed that over 32,000 women from Kerala were recruited to ISIS, will be removed from their social media accounts. High Court has recorded the statement, reported Live Law.

Those who are now opposing the movie call it incredulous. However, the makers of the film are refusing to back down. The bench consisted of N Nagaresh and Mohammed Nias C P.

A day after it was announced that Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will be visiting Indian to participate in a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council, he has said the visit should not be seen in terms of bilateral ties. "We are committed to the SCO charter and this visit should not be seen as a bilateral one but in the context of the SCO," the minister said. Pakistan's foreign office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahrah Baloch on Thursday informed that Zardari would be attending the meeting, scheduled to be held on May 4-5 in the southwestern Indian state of Goa. "Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will be leading the Pakistan delegation to the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) being held on May 4-5, 2023, in Goa, India," said Baloch. "Our participation in the meeting reflects Pakistan's commitment to the SCO Charter and processes and the importance that Pakistan accords to the region in its foreign policy priorities." Notably, this will be the first time that a Pakistan foreign minister will be visiting India since Hina Rabbani Khar in 2011. Moreover, after former PM Nawaz Sharif's visit in 2014 for PM Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony, this will be the first high-level visit from a Pakistani leader. On the same day as the announcement, terrorists attacked an Indian Army vehicle in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, killing five soldiers while critically injuring one. Reports have claimed that the terrorists may have crossed over from the Pakistan side and could be belonging to the banned terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taibya (LeT). A major operation has been launched by the authorities to nab the perpetrators. Islamabad-Rawalpindi vow to act as terror targets Pakistan army in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Russian government authorities released the video of the female suspect who has been detained in Sunday's blast case at a St Petersburg cafe in which a pro-war blogger Vladlen Tatarsky was killed.

In the released video, which has been recorded under duress, Darya Trepova can be heard admitting that she had handed the statuette that later blew up.

However, the 26-year-old suspect claimed that she was not aware that there would be an explosion and also did not admit to any further role.

Investigators stated that they had evidence which proves that Ukraine had organised the attack. However, Kyiv officials stated that this was the case of Russia infighting.

More than 30 citizens suffered injuries in the bomb blast in Russia's second city. Tatarsky (real name Maxim Fomin), aged 40, was attending a patriotic meeting along with supporters in the cafe on Sunday afternoon. He was present there as a guest speaker.

Another video has been circulating on social media showing a young woman, wearing a brown coat, entering the cafe before blast with a cardboard box.

The images show that the box was placed on a table before the woman sat down inside the cafe. In another video, a statuette is seen being handed to Tatarsky.

The Russian authorities released a brief excerpt of her interrogation in which Darya Trepova appeared under duress as she repeatedly sighed.

When she was asked by the interrogator if she knew why the authorities detained her, she said, "I would say for being at the scene of Vladlen Tatarsky's murder... I brought the statuette there which blew up."

When asked who gave the statuette to her, Trepova said, "Can I tell you later please?"

In the released video, which has been recorded under duress, Darya Trepova can be heard admitting that she had handed the statuette that later blew up. However, the 26-year-old suspect claimed that she was not aware that there would be an explosion and also did not admit to any further role. Pakistan has overtaken Afghanistan as the country with most terror attacks in South Asia, according to the annual Global Terrorism Index report. The report has been released by Australia-based Institute for Economics and Peace.

Last year, Pakistan recorded the second largest surge in terror-related deaths worldwide, at 643. This number represented the largest year-on-year increase in the last decade.

As per the report, at least 55 per cent of terror-related victims were military personnel. It said that due to fatalities, Pakistan moved up four places to sixth position on the index.

It said 36 per cent of terror-related deaths in Pakistan were due to attacks by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). The BLA has overtaken the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to be the deadliest terror group in Pakistan.

The BLA claims that it is fighting for independence of Balochistan province in Pakistan. The province borders Iran and Afghanistan. Both the BLA and TTP have been designated as terror organisations by the United States and the UK.

The Global Terrorism Index said that terrorism centres tend to be mainly located along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan. According to the report, 63 per cent of attacks and 74 per cent of deaths have taken place in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region.

Pakistan overtakes Afghanistan as country with most terror attacks: Report

He barely escaped Pakistan with his life after angering its powerful military with his journalism. Now his story has become a comic book.

Taha Siddiqui's therapist told him not to dwell on the attempted kidnapping he suffered five years ago, or he would never escape his trauma.

"Clearly, I didn't listen to her at all," said Siddiqui with a smile.

He was speaking to AFP in his Paris bar, The Dissident Club, which he opened in 2020 as a refuge for exiles like himself.

It shares its name with his new autobiographical comic book -- co-authored with cartoonist Hubert Maury who was previously a French diplomat in Pakistan -- which is released on Wednesday in France and soon in other languages.

It opens with the moment in January 2018 when members of Pakistan's military pulled him from a taxi in broad daylight and shoved him into another car. Detention, torture and death were very real possibilities.

Two strokes of luck saved Siddiqui -- convincing the man holding his neck to release him, saying he would go quietly, and noticing that the passenger door was unlocked.

He leapt from the moving car, ran down the busy highway and managed to alert his media friends, swiftly organising a press conference about the attack in order to buy time.

Only after escaping to Paris did he discover he was on the military's "kill list" and could never return.

The road to atheism

The graphic novel goes beyond this incident to explain the spread of extremism and war in the region through the story of his religiously conservative upbringing in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

"I chose to tell my story as a comic book because I couldn't have any when I was young," said Siddiqui.

"It will definitely piss off my father. I hope he won't see it."

Not that they have a good relationship. His father's response to the attempted kidnapping was to say he was being punished by God for not praying enough.

It was a classic Romeo-and-Juliet experience that challenged Siddiqui's own faith, after his family opposed his marriage to a Shia girl he met at university. The divide between the Sunni and Shia branches of Islam is a fraught and often violent faultline in Pakistan.

"That really triggered this thing in me that there's something wrong with the way we live," said Siddiqui, who is now a full-blown atheist.

'No regrets'

The attempted kidnapping put an end to a successful career. He had worked with many international media and won the prestigious Albert Londres prize for a piece on the Taliban banning polio vaccines.

His fearless criticism of the powerful Pakistani military made him a target, particularly a front-page story for the New York Times exposing their secret prisons.

"It was pretty crazy," said Maury, his co-author. "But that's what makes it such an interesting story.

"I find it impressive and remarkable. He risked not just his life but exile as well and cutting ties with his family."

Siddiqui said he has no regrets: "I chose this life but I didn't choose (the military's) reaction. That's on them, not me.

"Sometimes I'm sad. I really believed in the country at one time in my life but now less and less. Pakistan is a very dysfunctional country."

Siddiqui is already planning a follow-up that looks at the lives of other exiles.

"I wanted to take control because when I was attacked I lost control," he said.

Even his therapist is convinced, having recently visited the bar for a talk on exile and mental health.

"She said I was doing well and getting purpose out of what happened to me," he said. "I was really happy."

Terrorist group al Qaeda on Sunday (March 5) confirmed that a senior member of the jihadist group in Yemen has been killed in suspected air strikes, said SITE Intelligence Group.

AFP reported citing security and local government sources that Hamad bin Hamoud al-Tamimi had been killed. The sources identified him as a top leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). The United States regards AQAP among al Qaeda's more dangerous branches.

Tamimi, a Saudi also known as Abdel Aziz al-Adnani, died in a drone strike on February 26 that targeted his residence in war-torn Yemen's northern Marib province, according to the statement reported by SITE, which monitors jihadist websites.

The statement identified Tamimi as a "media official" who "previously managed external operations in the group, including those striking American interests".

AQAP said Tamimi spent nearly four years in prison in Saudi Arabia before traveling to Yemen in 2013, where he expressed a desire to attack "vital" American interests and carry out a suicide attack himself.

The sources, requesting anonymity, told AFP Tamimi had headed AQAP's leadership council and acted as the militant group's "judge".

SITE said the Al-Qaeda statement had noted another media official, Abu Nasser al-Hadhrami, was "a victim of the attack".

AQAP and rival militants loyal to the Islamic State group have thrived in the chaos of Yemen's eight-year civil war, which pits the Saudi-backed government against Iran-allied Huthi rebels.

The attack came hours after an explosion took place near Pakistan’s Quetta Police Lines area in which at least five people were injured.

The blast took place near a stadium where Pakistan cricket stars, including captain Babar Azam and former skipper Shahid Afridi were playing in an exhibition match of Pakistani Super League (PSL) at the Nawab Akbar Bugti Stadium.

According to PTI news agency, the game was halted for some time following an explosion in the Police Lines area in Quetta.

Of late, Pakistan has been targeted by a wave of terrorist mostly in the country's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, apart from the restive Balochistan province and Punjab town of Mianwali.

The rise of attacks is being attributed to the breakdown of ceasefire negotiations with the Pakistani Taliban, or Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which seeks to impose extreme version of Sharia law in Pakistan.

TTP is responsible for various attacks in Pakistan since it was formed in around 2007. Their main target has been security forces, but civilians and other minority communities have also been attacked.

It is also responsible for the shooting of Nobel laureate and education campaigner Malala Yousafzai, who survived the attack.

Late last year, peace talks appeared to fail and the ceasefire TTP appeared to be honouring, ended.

(With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

A US man who shot at 10 people after dropping off smoke bombs on a crowded New York subway train last April in one of the deadliest attacks on the city’s transit system has pleaded guilty to terrorism and weapons charges.

Frank James, 63, who appeared at a district court in Brooklyn on Tuesday, was charged with 10 counts of terrorism, one for each person shot, and one firearms count, AP news agency reported.

In an early Sunday morning helicopter assault in eastern Syria, the US killed two ISIS leaders, according to a statement from US Central Command.

According to CENTCOM, the attack was a unilateral US action that had "considerable preparation," and the first findings indicated that no civilians were killed or hurt.

"Anas," a local ISIS leader active in organising activities in eastern Syria, was one of the officials killed.

“The death of these ISIS officials will disrupt the terrorist organization’s ability to further plot and carry out destabilizing attacks in the Middle East,” said Central Command spokesman Col. Joe Buccino.

The US reaffirmed that it was dedicated to the fight against ISIS "in conjunction with local forces," notwithstanding recent Turkish operations in northern Syria that targeted Kurdish troops, putting US people at danger and posing a destabilisation threat.

The death of ISIS commander Abu al-Hasan al-Hashimi al- Qurayshi was praised by the US two weeks ago. Unlike the previous commander, Hajji Abdullah, who died in a US raid in February, he was not assassinated by American forces.
