<h2><strong>‘Baseless’</strong></h2>

<p>“These repetitive accusations are rejected as baseless,” Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said at a briefing, adding that Washington should instead face accusations for its role in Israel’s war on Gaza.</p>

<p>He added, “Such claims are aimed at projecting, distracting public attention, and covering up for the full support of the American government for the crimes of the Zionist regime (Israel) in Gaza.”&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>US military's accusations against Iran</strong></h2>

<p>Pentagon, speaking on the incident told WION that the drone was “fired from Iran.” Notably, it is the first time that Washington&nbsp;directly accused Tehran of targeting ships.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The attack, as per US officials, occurred at approximately 10:00 am &nbsp;(local time) in the Indian Ocean, 200 nautical miles off India's Gujarat coast.</p>

<p>It said that the “motor vessel CHEM PLUTO, a Liberia-flagged, Japanese-owned, and Netherlands-operated chemical tanker” was hit by “a one-way attack drone fired from Iran.”</p>

<p>In a statement to WION, the Pentagon said “No U.S. Navy vessels were in the vicinity. U.S. Naval Forces Central Command remains in communication with the vessel as it continues toward a destination in India.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added, “This is the seventh Iranian attack on commercial shipping since 2021.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Wall Street Journal citing the Dutch company operating the vessel said that it had connections to Israeli shipping tycoon Idan Ofer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The recent attack off the Indian coast came amid a flurry of attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea by the Yemen-based Iran-backed Houthi rebels amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The militant group had warned that they would target all ships heading to Israel, regardless of their nationality, and warned international shipping companies against dealing in Israeli ports.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Indian Navy&nbsp;to investigate incident</strong></h2>

<p>The Indian Navy said that it responded to a request for assistance by dispatching an aircraft and a warship to ensure the safety of the involved ship and its crew. Indian Defence officials reportedly said, “As per inputs received, the fire has been extinguished but it has affected its functioning.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian Navy is “now investigating whether the drone used to attack the vessel was launched from long range or from a nearby vessel. The vessels operating in the area where the attack took place are being checked.”</p>

<p>He said that the number of casualties was high because the rehab centre was overcrowded and the ones being treated there had no space to move freely.</p>

<p>Earlier, the death toll was reported as 27 with 12 injured, by the judiciary's Mizan Online news website, highlighting that the rehab centre only had a capacity of 40 people.</p>

<p>The province's chief justice Esmail Sadeghi released a statement saying that the manager and other possible culprits have been arrested.</p>

<p>As per news agency AFP, the footage of the incident showed massive flames gushing out of the rehab centre forcing plumes of smoke into the air.</p>

<p>For days, Geravand was hospitalised in Tehran and slipped into a state of coma. The 16-year-old girl was taken to a hospital in Tehran after she was found unconscious on the metro.<br />

On October 3, the Kurdish-focused rights group Hengaw was the first one to report her case, stating that she was critically injured during an incident which took place on the underground train network.<br />

However, the government authorities claimed that Geravand's blood pressure suddenly dropped and denied any "physical or verbal altercations" happened between her and other passengers.<br />

The rights groups, meanwhile, claimed that the teenage girl was critically wounded after members of Iran's morality police allegedly assaulted her.</p>

<p>The move by the United States to strengthen its defence capabilities comes after attacks targetting US troops in other parts of the Middle East injured nearly two dozen US personnel since Oct 18.</p>

<p>US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had also released a statement saying that the recent US deployments to the region were aimed at thwarting the assaults purportedly designed to widen the Israel-Hamas conflict.</p>

<p>"We're concerned about potential escalation. In fact, what we're seeing … is the prospect of a significant escalation of attacks on our troops and our people throughout the region," Austin told ABC's "This Week" programme. "If any group or any country is looking to widen this conflict ... our advice is: don't."</p>

<h2><strong>US military under attack</strong></h2>

<p>Over the past week, American troops stationed in other parts of the Middle East—Iraq and Syria—have come under attacks. There are about 2,500 US troops in Iraq.</p>

<p>Ain al-Asad airbase, which hosts US and other international forces in western Iraq, was targeted by drones and missiles on October 19 evening. Multiple blasts were reportedly heard inside the base.</p>

<p>The attack came after rockets hit another military base hosting US forces near Baghdad’s international airport on Thursday, Iraqi police said.</p>

<p>A day before on Wednesday, US forces in Iraq were targeted in two separate drone attacks, with one causing minor injuries to a small number of troops even though the US military managed to intercept the armed drone.</p>

<h2><strong>900 US troops heading to Middle East</strong></h2>

<p>The Pentagon on Thursday said that about 900 additional US troops were either heading to the Middle East or had already arrived there to bolster air defences to protect US personnel amid a surge in attacks in the region.</p>

<p>"As part of our efforts to deter a broader conflict and further bolster U.S. force protection capabilities I can confirm that since our initial force posture announcement, approximately 900 troops have subsequently deployed or are in the process of deploying to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. These include forces that have been on 'prepare to deploy' orders and which are deploying from the continental United States," Pentagon Press Secretary Brigadier General, Patrick Ryder said.</p>

<p>"Deployed and deploying units include a terminal, high altitude area defence battery from Fort Bliss, Texas; Patriot Batteries from Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Patriot and Avenger batteries from Fort Liberty, North Carolina and associated air defence headquarters elements from Fort Bliss and Fort Cavazos, Texas," he added.</p>

<p>"My warning to the ayatollah was that if they continue to move against those troops, we will respond, and he should be prepared. It has nothing to do with Israel," he told reporters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Iran's state news agency IRNA, citing an unnamed source, stated that Washington had sent Tehran as well as its allies like Lebanese Hezbollah, messages saying that it wasn't seeking to escalate the war, urging them to exercise restraint.</p>

<p>"The United States cannot both send military equipment to the Israeli regime and take charge of managing the war with one hand, while issuing political messages with the other hand, and speak about its opposition to the expansion of the war," IRNA cited the unnamed source as saying, adding Iran's allies "act independently and are not subject to Tehran's orders."&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the judiciary’s Mizan Online news website, the two men involved in the attack, identified as Mohammad Ramez Rashidi and Naeem Hashem Qatali, were hanged in public.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They said that Iran did not take all possible measures to avert the downing of Flight PS752 and also failed to conduct an impartial, transparent and fair criminal probe and prosecution.</p>

<p>They asked the court to "order full reparation for all injury caused" and to make Iran pay "full compensation to the applicants for the material and moral damages suffered by the victims and their families".</p>

<p>Iran should also return the belongings of the victims and publicly acknowledge its "internationally wrongful acts".</p>

<p>The majority of the victims of the incident who lost their lives were from the four countries, which created a coordination group aiming to hold Iran to account.</p>

<p>Iran, in a statement, had said that its forces accidentally shot down the Boeing 737 jet during the time when the tensions between Tehran and Washington were heightened.</p>

<p>A final report issued in the year 2021, held a misaligned radar and an error by an air defence operator responsible for the tragic incident.</p>

<p>Canada at the time said the report made "no attempt to answer critical questions about what truly happened".&nbsp;</p>

<p>India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval visited Iran Monday where he held talks with his Iranian counterpart Ali Shamkhani. The Iranian media reported that the two officials discussed economic, political and security ties between the two countries.&nbsp;</p>
