Tehran's top diplomat in Damascus on Saturday threatened an "even stronger" reaction to any aggression, as Israel readied its response to an Iranian missile attack earlier this week.

"Our reaction to any attack by the Zionist regime is completely clear," Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told reporters in the Syrian capital, where he met top officials including Tehran's ally President Bashar al-Assad.

"For every action, there will be a proportional and similar reaction from Iran, and even stronger," he said.

He spoke after an Israeli military official told AFP on condition of anonymity, as he was not authorised to discuss the issue publicly, the army was "preparing a response to the unprecedented and unlawful Iranian attack".

In Damascus earlier, Araghchi renewed his call for ceasefires in the Gaza Strip and in Lebanon.

Araghchi's visit, his first since he took office in August, comes almost a year after Iran-backed Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel, triggering the war in Gaza.

The conflict has also drawn in Iran's Lebanese ally Hezbollah, and on September 23 Israel sharply intensified its campaign against the militant group.

Israel said the strike aimed to prevent the flow of weapons to Hezbollah from neighbouring Syria.

Iran has been a staunch ally of Assad throughout the civil war that erupted in 2011 following the suppression of anti-government protests.

Earlier on Saturday, Assad's office quoted him as saying Iran's missile attack on Israel was "a strong response and taught the Zionist entity a lesson".

The attack came just days after an Israeli air strike in southern Beirut killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

The runoff between Pezeshkian and Jalili will take place on Friday (July 5). But this doesn't mean a win for the Iran's reformist camp. The bulk of the Ghalibaf votes (about 3.38 million) are predicted to switch to Jalili. Unless Pezeshkian manages to get more voters out of their homes given that the first round showed he stands a chance to win, it'll all but a smokescreen of hope for the reformists in Iran intending to get out of the shadow of conservative norms that have come to define Iranian life after 1979.&nbsp;

The Iranian Ministry of Interior said that voting stations in Iran opened at 08:00 am (0430 GMT) Friday for a snap presidential election, following the death of president Ebrahim Raisi. According to the Iranian media reports, 146 men, 115 women, and three European citizens were arrested. The nationalities of the three European citizens were not immediately known.

Those arrested were found “in an undesirable and obscene state with emblems, signs and symbols of satanism on their clothes, head, face and hair,” said the local news agencies citing a police statement.

“Satanist network broken up in Tehran, arrests of three European nationals,” reported the semi-official news agency Tasnim.&nbsp;

It also published photos alongside its report showing masks, what appeared to be model skulls and T-shirts with skulls on, reported Reuters.

According to a report by Iran’s Fars news agency, Iranian law enforcement officials also seized alcohol, psychoactive substances and 73 vehicles during the overnight raid on a “satanist network”.&nbsp;

A 25-second video posted by the agency showed a scene from a gathering resembling a techno event, reported DW.&nbsp;

While these symbols are common in tattoos, piercings, and earrings, they are prohibited in Iran and so is drinking alcohol. &nbsp;

"This violent threat seeks to frighten the farmer from his field, children from their schools, women from the marketplace and families from their very homes. We must therefore fight this threat together, combining determined national effort with well-tailored and regional and international collaboration."

Tinubu is also the chair of the West African regional bloc ECOWAS. He&nbsp;urged the proper establishment&nbsp;of a regional standby military force. This force, initially proposed in response to the July 2023 coup in Niger, would act as a deterrent against acts of violence by&nbsp;terrorists in the region, he said.

According to a new study by the African Center for Strategic Studies, more than 23,000 people were killed in Africa last year — a 20 per cent increase compared to 2022.

Israeli residents in Jerusalem said they did not want a war with Iran. A report by the news agency Reuters said that Israel reported modest damage and reopened its airspace.

The authorities instructed citizens not to hold gatherings of more than 100 people, to close all schools and venues for children's camps during the spring break for the Jewish holiday of Passover, and to close some beach and travel sites.&nbsp;

Iran on Monday (Feb 5) confirmed it had&nbsp;commenced the construction of a new nuclear research reactor in the central city of Isfahan. The new 10-megawatt facility is being built to create a powerful neutron source, according to&nbsp;state media outlet IRNA.&nbsp;

“Today, the process of pouring concrete for the foundation of the reactor started at the Isfahan site,” Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, was quoted as saying by the agency.&nbsp;

Amid biting US sanctions, the new facility is expected to help in conducting&nbsp;fuel and nuclear material tests as well as the production of industrial radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals.&nbsp;

The announcement comes days after Tehran announced it was constructing a nuclear power plant complex in the south.&nbsp;

Eslami said last week the construction of the nuclear power plant complex would comprise four individual plants with a combined production capacity of 5,000 megawatts.

"We must reach the production capacity of 20,000 megawatts of nuclear power in the country by the year 2041," said Eslami.&nbsp;

Notably, only the US, France, China, Russia and South Korea have&nbsp;more than 20,000 megawatts of nuclear capacity installed.

The rapid construction of nuclear facilities suggests that Iran was looking to enhance its nuclear weapons programme - a proposition that may not go down well with the Western bloc.

However, the three European nations, known as E3, wrote a letter to&nbsp;European Union External Affairs Chief&nbsp;Josep Borell and said Tehran was in serious breach of the deal - meaning the sanctions could not be lifted.
