One of the five Afghans, who were evacuated from Kabul to Paris, was detained on Tuesday on suspected links to the Taliban, France’s interior minister Gerald Darmanin said.

The five Afghan evacuees were put under high surveillance by France’s intelligence agency for possible links to the Taliban. They were quarantined in a hotel in Paris, as they haven’t been fully vaccinated.

“One left the place where he was asked to stay and police arrested him,” local media quoted Darmanin as saying.

“Of the other four men, one was obviously linked to the Taliban. But he helped the French army a lot, the French (nationals), your fellow journalists, more than a hundred Afghans who had visas and could not get out from the embassy,” he added.

Darmanin said security checks were done in Abu Dhabi, where the French have transferred evacuees before their journey to Paris. There was no breach, he said.

Darmanin said France has evacuated over 1,000 Afghans from Kabul over the past week, including a large majority of Afghans who worked with the French government or French groups in the country.

Meanwhile, a new flight of French evacuees from Kabul landed in Paris at dawn on Tuesday, with 205 evacuees on board, including 204 Afghans.

Australia evacuated more than 50 female Afghan athletes and their dependents after lobbying by prominent figures from the sporting world, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported on Tuesday.

Australia has for more than a week been evacuating its citizens and some of its former staff from its embassy after the Taliban seized control of the capital, Kabul, on August&nbsp;15.

About 1,000 people have been evacuated on Australian flights and the ABC reported that among them were about 50 female athletes and their dependents, after their plight had drawn the support of several prominent former sporting figures.

FIFPRO, the worldwide association for professional footballers that has also been heavily involved in efforts to get the athletes out, confirmed the group evacuation without giving numbers.

"We are grateful to the Australian government for evacuating a large number of women footballers and athletes from Afghanistan," FIFPRO said in a statement.&nbsp;

"These young women, both as athletes and activists, have been in a position of danger and on behalf of their peers around the world we thank the international community for coming to their aid."&nbsp;

Khalida Popal, a former Afghan women`s team captain now living in Denmark, hailed an important victory.

"The women footballers have been brave and strong in a moment of crisis and we hope they will have a better life outside Afghanistan," she said.

Nikki Dryden, who swam for Canada at two Olympic Games, worked with an Australian lawyer to complete the visa applications for the athletes, who included two Afghan Paralympians.

Amid fears a protracted visa process would scupper the plan, the refugee advocates secured the help of Australia`s former soccer captain, Craig Foster, the ABC reported.

The ABC said Foster lobbied Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Sports Minister Richard Colbeck.

Soon afterwards, the athletes secured visas and then managed to make it to the airport in Kabul for an evacuation flight out of Afghanistan.

FIFPRO thanked Foster and Dryden, among others, for their round-the-clock efforts and urged the international community to ensure the players received the help they needed in their new lives.

"There are also many athletes still at risk in Afghanistan and every effort should be made to offer them support," it added.

Representatives for Payne and Colbeck did not immediately respond to questions from Reuters. Foster did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Tuesday that the August 31 deadline for Kabul evacuations will not be extended.

He goes on to say that there is enough time to get foreign nationals out before the deadline.

The Taliban, according to Zabihullah Mujahid, are no longer allowing Afghan people to travel to Kabul airport due to the chaotic situation there.

At the&nbsp;press conference, Zabihullah stated that passengers at the airport should return home since their safety would be ensured.&nbsp;

Mujahid called on the US to "not encourage" Afghan people - especially doctors, engineers and the "educated elite" - to leave Afghanistan.

He said: "We urge the Americans not to push skilled Afghans to go... We need their talent."

He went on to say that Afghan media outlets, as well as hospitals, schools, universities, and local governments, were now operational.

About 50,000 foreigners and Afghans have fled the country from Kabul's airport since the Taliban swept into power nine days ago, according to the US government.

Many Afghans fear a repeat of the brutal interpretation of sharia law the Taliban implemented when they were first in power from 1996-2001, and retribution for working with the US-backed government over the past two decades.

The Taliban, who ended two decades of war with an astonishingly swift rout of government forces, have been publicly tolerant of the evacuation effort.

Afghanistan’s Panjshir Valley is in the news for last few days. Firstly because of the resistance movement led by Ahmed Massoud and Amrullah Saleh, ex Vice President who declared himself as president after Mr Ashraf Ghani fled from the country fearing his life from Taliban and secondly because it its strategic location.

Panjshir valley has never been captured by any invading force which is due to its topography &amp; strategic location. During ancient times and the invasion of Greek Armies under Alexender, the valley could not be won until Alexender himself made a treaty with the ethnic tribes located here and gave them place in his Army.

<img alt="Panjshir Valley" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="c5a03ed9-ae83-4498-bdaf-cb49934fa17b" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_9LJ8KR.jpg" />

During the Khalsa rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the valley remained totally untouched. Even during various Afghan Wars, British Forces never dared to enter the valley by force. History is evident that anyone who tried to do so, perished in the mountains of Hindukush. Panjshir has a legend that during 10th Century AD, five brothers constructed a dam on the orders of the ruler of Ghazni (Probably Mehmood of Ghazni) after which they were given title of Sher (Lion) and their place of residence became “Panjshir Valley”. Currently it is home to over a lakh ethnic Tajik people who settled in this area for a long time.&nbsp;

During the Soviet Invasion, the valley gained notoriety when it was unconquered for almost ten years despite of soviet forces trying all their weapons and tactics. It became their graveyard too. Legendary Ahmed Shah Massoud popularly known as “Lion of Panjshir” repulsed every attack and controlled the valley until he was assassinated in 2001. Despite of all their efforts Taliban 1.0 (Initial Taliban which came in power during 1994-1997) was not able to even enter the valley and the land of five lions remained undefeated even till now.

Only whose people were able to enter the valley who maintained a healthy relationship with the Tajiks there. Enemies failed miserably. This is the prime reason why Taliban 2.0 is insisting on talks rather than their common tactics of advancing with force. Recently they retreated from some of the areas too after suffering heavy casualties which proves that Panjshir Valley is not a cakewalk for anyone. Here are five reasons which make this valley special and a graveyard for any invader.

1.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Topography -&nbsp;Panjshir is located in Hindukush Mountains and the entire valley is located along Panjshir River which flows all along its length. The mountain cliffs on both side of the river are very high and have a sheer gradient that it is not possible to cross them through land route. It is not easy to navigate these mountains for anyone. Although the mountains so have some trekking routes which are known only to locals.&nbsp;

2.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Limited approach routes - Approaching this valley is a big challenge. It has two prominent passes which are the only gateway to the outside world. Khawak Pass connects it with Baghlan Province of and Anjuman Pass which connects it to Badakhshan provinces of Afghanistan. Except these two passes, there is another route through Jabal Siraj which connects it with Bagram and Kabul but that is not so significant for a large force to enter the valley. Topography of the two passes mentioned above is also complicated and any advancing force can be stopped easily by a group of mercenaries.&nbsp;

3.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Ethnic Affiliation -&nbsp;Almost 100% of the population of this valley are Ethnic Tajiks who are very closely associated with each other. Being Tajik, they do get support from Tajikistan. Since some of the routes across Badakhshan are connected to Tajikistan, the support lines are well laid and people as well as government in Tajikistan is always ready to help their fellow Tajik people.&nbsp;

4.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Rich in resources - Among all the regions of Afghanistan, Panjshir valley is among the richest when it comes to natural resources. The valley is fed by Panjshir River which helps in irrigation and drinking water, it has rich deposits of Silver, Various types of crystals including Emeralds and rare earth minerals too. Due to its topography, mining of such resources was limited however the people staying here have been able to maintain a healthy lifestyle and the living standard of Panjshir Valley is better than the national average of Afghanistan.&nbsp;

5.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Fortress of Tajik Fighters - Tajik fighters have been fighting the invading forces for over four decades. Initially it was Soviet Union, then Taliban 1.0 and once again Taliban 2.0. Over these years, they have converted this valley into a formidable fortress. They built tunnels, underground bunkers, Bunkers and fortifications on all approaches, escape routes and routes to misguide any invader. These have helped them to survive till now.&nbsp;

It is not unusual to call Panjshir Valley as graveyard of the invaders because anyone who tried to conquer it by force, perished in these mountains right from Greeks, Central Asian invaders, Persians, British, Soviet and even Taliban. Current resistance movement is led by Afghan Vice President Amrullah Saleh who is known to be a spy master. So far, his forces have been successful against Taliban in the Valley and nearby areas but to liberate Afghanistan, they must come out of their fortress which is Panjshir Valley to fight. How will they succeed in this, only time can answer?

Afghan athlete Zakia Khudadadi has made an emotional plea and urged the global institutions for the protection of women to "help her" as she sought to escape Kabul to participate in the upcoming Paralympic Games. Khudadadi, a 23-year-old athlete from Herat, would have been the first woman ever to represent Afghanistan at the Paralympics but she couldn't travel to Japan due to the ongoing political crisis in Afghanistan. Taekwondo athlete Zakia Khudadadi and discus thrower Hossain Rasouli were scheduled to compete in the Para Games in Tokyo, to be held between August 24 and September 5. Khudadadi was due to fly to Japan on Monday (August 17) while the team had been scheduled to arrive in Tokyo on the 17th. However, Khudadadi's Paralympics fate remains unclear. In a video message from Kabul sent to Reuters by the APC's London-based Chef de Mission Arian Sadiqi, Khodadadi said that she felt "imprisoned", staying with extended family but unable to leave the house with confidence to train, shop or check on others. In the video, Khodadadi can be heard speaking in Farsi, but as per the loose translation, she said she felt an additional burden to her relations who did not have enough food to feed their children. "Unfortunately due to the current upheaval going on in Afghanistan the team could not leave Kabul in time," Sadiqi said. He further added that the athletes had been trying to secure flights but the prices soared as the Taliban took over a string of cities. "They were really excited prior to the situation. They were training wherever they could, in the parks and back gardens," he said. Zakia Khudadadi was profiled on the Paralympic website last week talking about her hopes for the Games. Her profile stated, "I was thrilled after I received the news that I have got a wild card to compete at the Games. This is the first time that a female athlete will be representing Afghanistan at the Games and I'm so happy. I just want to be there with the other athletes from the world and give my best. It is an opportunity to show my ability and I will be so proud to stand with all of those athlete." The International Paralympic Committee on Monday (August 16) confirmed that both the athletes would no longer be able to travel to Japan. "Due to the serious ongoing situation in the country, all airports are closed and there is no way for them to travel to Tokyo." "We hope the team and officials remain safe and well during this difficult time," Spence said.

The Taliban have said that hundreds of their fighters are heading for the Panjshir Valley, the centre of the resistance in war-ravaged Afghanistan. The National Resistance Front's Ahmad Massoud has said he wanted to hold negotiations with the hardline Islamist group but that his forces were ready to fight.

The Islamic World remains divided in its views on Afghan crisis and Taliban. A few countries like Pakistan and Turkey have welcomed Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan. Others have warned against the threat of terrorism.

Pakistan and Turkey welcome Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan

Former Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani's brother Hashmat Ghani has dismissed reports of his joining the Taliban saying he has "accepted their rule" but "accepted not to join them". Hashmat is an influential Afghan politician and a businessman and oversees the Ahmadzai tribe, the largest of the Pashtun tribes.

Speaking exclusively to our Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal from Kabul, Hashmat Ghani said that "there was a plot...to kill him and they wanted to assassinate" his brother Ashraf Ghani to "create chaos, bloodbath in Kabul" so that "some of these retired old warlords can play their cards." Ghani left Kabul on 15th August, the day when the Afghan national capital fell to Taliban. The former president is currently in UAE.

He also spoke about India-Afghan ties, situation in the country after Taliban takeover and many other things.

WION: My first question, and an obvious one which is going in the news as well that you have extended your support, your allegiance to the Taliban, is it true?

Hashmat Ghani: This is a misconception. I have accepted their rule. I have not accepted to join them. I have simply told them that in order to avoid bloodshed, I have accepted the rule which is worse than everyone pulling the rug under us. I am staying here to safeguards my tribe, the educated ones and those in commercial sectors. I told them frankly, they're very good at bringing out security, they have proven it in the last few days but they're lacking co-operation of intellect, those that are working in civil service, and those who know how to run the country, those who know how to run the financial sector and the business community. I will be in the country, if they want to join a government that is acceptable to people, I would, I would not join them but I will try to bridge a gap between those, so the country doesn't fall or doesn't face a collapse or faces hunger or starvation. This is my exact statement.

WION: So, what is the situation like right now in Afghanistan and specifically Kabul? It has been more than one week since the fall of Kabul to Taliban..

Hashmat Ghani: As far as security, they have done hell of a job. The only problem is the cooperation between them and the American forces, those who want to leave. I just made an offer and now that both sides are willing, we can interfere so that these people can leave with respect, and they can leave with their dignity intact. Hopefully, they take my offer today, and they accept that. So, we can put some of setup there, so nobody gets killed, nobody gets insulted, and nobody leaves with any pain or suffering. That is the last clause on it. As far as the commodity prices, everything is rising daily because of the lack of banking sector, especially the freeze coming in from the American side. They didn't really adapt because they could have just frozen the aid, but they froze Afghanistan's national reserve which belongs to common man.

WION: You talked about the proposal, this proposal has been given by you to the Americans. Or is it in terms of both Americans and the Taliban so that there can be some kind of conversation between the two sides so that we can't see the disruption, we all have seen-- so far in Afghanistan?

Hashmat Ghani: I sent early morning to both sides. Basically, what I am saying is all I need is my guys to be allowed to play a role, I want to take over that area and facilitate those who actually have a visa and separate those who are just coming there in order to create chaos.

WION: Another question is, when it comes to India, How do you see India's role when it comes to the current situation in Afghanistan. We know that there hasn't been much public conversation as well between India and Taliban. How do you see India and Taliban?

Hashmat Ghani: India sees that there is a strong Pakistani influence which no one can deny. India has taken a back seat which at this stage is a smart play. I have told clearly to Taliban, not just because of India, Iran, central Asia, Russia, in the west without an international relations or commercial ties..like the Air cargo routes that was established for the exports between Afghanistan and India has been one of the most successful ones for the Afghan fruits, dry fruits. It is necessary for Afghan businessman and Afghan community, especially in the season. There has to be presence of the embassies, all that. Once, both India and Pakistan have their embassies here there won't be much of an accusation that Afghanistan is being used against India or any country or Pakistan for that matter. We would love to see a neutral country. Ties, people to people ties, the politics should not impact it.

WION: And so the final question to you is about your brother. Have you had any conversation with your brother Ashraf Ghani? Any reason that why he left the country? He is being blamed for the current situation by many common Afghans. If u can give us little details of perhaps any conversation you had with your brother?

Hashmat Ghani: There was a plot. And I'm sure he will give the detail of that, respecting the UAE restriction on political activities. You would not be able to do it now but in due time, I'm sure. They wanted to kill him, and they wanted to assassinate him and create a chaos, bloodbath would have taken place in Kabul so some of these retired old warlords could play their cards. I'm glad that he left intact, and he prevented a bloodbath in the capital.

WION: Who wanted to kill him ?

Hashmat Ghani: Let him give the detail. As soon as he feels that he can leave UAE, he can be in a country where he can make political statements which are accepted.

WION: Thank you so much for speaking. It's a pleasure having you here and we will continue the conversation. Thank you so much.

Hashmat Ghani: Thank you, and thanks for the concern from the common Indian towards the Afghans and I am sure that ties between the people will never be impacted. Politics comes and goes, but people stay. We share a subcontinent. We share ties and I hope one day we'll see a smooth political relationship between India, Pakistan &amp; Central Asia. And another 300 to 400 million people will get a life and future without having to point barrels of guns at each other.

Former Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani's brother Hashmat Ghani has dismissed reports of his joining the Taliban saying he has "accepted their rule" but "accepted not to join them".

After two decades out of power, the&nbsp;Taliban&nbsp;are swiftly moving to stamp their authority on Afghanistan using every tool at their disposal -- including&nbsp;flags.

Since rolling into Kabul a week ago, the white banner of the Islamist militants has become a common sight across the country, replacing the national&nbsp;tricolour&nbsp;flag above government buildings, police stations and military facilities.

There have been scattered reports of people being castigated or even punished for waving the old national banner, but so far there is no official word from the group on the flag issue.

At a Kabul roadside on Sunday, vendors were making a quick sale in&nbsp;Taliban&nbsp;flags&nbsp;-- a white banner bearing the Muslim proclamation of faith and the regime's formal name: "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan".

"Our goal is to spread the flag of the Islamic Emirate throughout Afghanistan, instead of the&nbsp;tricolour&nbsp;flag," said vendor Ahmad Shakib, who studies economics at university.

It was not clear if he was affiliated with the&nbsp;Taliban.

The sight of&nbsp;Taliban&nbsp;fighters in vehicles bearing the standard has terrorised people across Afghanistan in recent weeks as the militants first captured vast swathes of the rural hinterland and then all the major cities.

The group was quick to replace the&nbsp;Afghan&nbsp;national flag wherever it could.

But in the middle of the despair and fear sparked by the&nbsp;Taliban&nbsp;takeover, the old flag has become something of a symbol of defiance for many, featuring prominently in the small protests held in recent days.

<h2>&nbsp;'My heart is here'</h2>

Social media has been awash with images and emojis of the old flag -- a black, red and green vertical&nbsp;tricolour&nbsp;with the national emblem overlaid in white -- posted by public figures including sports stars and many ordinary Afghans.

On Afghanistan's independence day last week, groups of people waved the national flag in Kabul and a handful of suburbs to celebrate -- sometimes in plain sight of patrolling&nbsp;Taliban.

At one rally, people on a convoy of honking cars waved national&nbsp;flags&nbsp;in Kabul. At another spot, men and women stood by the roadside holding the&nbsp;tricolour&nbsp;banner.

A day earlier,&nbsp;Taliban&nbsp;fighters fired guns to disperse dozens in the eastern city of Jalalabad who were protesting over the removal of the national flag, according to local media.

"My heart is here for this flag... I will never leave this flag," said one Jalalabad resident.

"Kill us, fire at us... We will never leave this flag."

Taliban flags proliferate as Afghan tricolour becomes resistance symbol

It's been a week since the Taliban captured Kabul and Afghanistan's economy stares at a bleak future. With no women or children seen outside, most of the markets and streets in Kabul wear a deserted look. WION's correspondent Anas Mallick brings you the ground report

Britain plans to push world leaders to consider new sanctions on the Taliban when the G7 group of advanced economies meet on Tuesday to discuss the crisis in Afghanistan, sources told Reuters.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who currently leads the group that includes the United States, Italy, France, Germany, Japan and Canada, called on Sunday for the virtual meeting, in the wake of the Taliban's swift takeover of Afghanistan.

Britain believes the G7 should consider economic sanctions and withhold aid if the Taliban commits human rights abuses and allows its territory to be used as a haven for militants, according to a British government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, and a second Western diplomat.

US&nbsp;President Joe Biden told reporters on Sunday that the Taliban had not taken any action against US&nbsp;forces controlling Kabul airport, and had largely followed through on their pledge to let Americans reach the airport safely.

Asked whether he would support Britain's push for sanctions if the Taliban committed abuses, Biden said, "The answer is yes. It depends on the conduct."

Taliban militants seized control of Kabul last weekend in an upheaval that sent civilians and Afghan military allies fleeing for safety. Many fear a return to the austere interpretation of Islamic law imposed during the previous Taliban rule that ended 20 years ago.

"It is vital that the international community works together to ensure safe evacuations, prevent a humanitarian crisis and support the Afghan people to secure the gains of the last 20 years," Johnson said on Twitter on Sunday.

Sanctions against the Taliban are unlikely to be adopted immediately, one Western diplomat said. British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab first raised the possibility of sanctions to pressure the Taliban last week.
