<p>As two US warships transited on Sunday, Chinese navy kept a close watch.</p>

<p>"The USS Antietam and the USS Chancellorsville, two US guided-missile cruisers, sailed through the Taiwan Strait on August 28 and hyped it up publicly," the Eastern Theatre Command (ETC) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) said on Sunday.</p>

<p>The ETC conducted security tracking and monitoring of the US warships' passage in the whole course and had all movements of the two US warships under control, Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the ETC, said in a statement.</p>

<p>Snippets of the speech released by the Chinese state media showed that Xi batted on the front foot and explicitly asked his party workers to expand China's strength.</p>

<p>"We must strengthen the building of overseas patriotic forces, cultivate and expand the strength of those who know China and are willing to befriend China, and promote exchanges and mutual learning of Chinese and foreign cultures and civilisations,” said Xi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Chinese President further heaped praise on his United Front army and illustrated its importance.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rudd, who studied in Taiwan, said he has seen Taipei evolve over the years and he believes that it has become less secure due to Pelosi's visit because the People's Republic of China has now normalised a new set of military drills in its close vicinity and around it.</p>

<p>According to Rudd, if China successfully takes control over Taiwan, it will be emboldened and Jinping will take advantage and double down.</p>

<p>Pointing out the similarities between India and China, Rudd said they both have been invaded several times and faced external security threats.</p>

<p>Praising Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rudd said he has been elected two times with a thumping majority and has redirected India's strategic policy which has been acutely manifested in Quad.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rudd said that the Indian economy is growing robustly at six to seven per cent annually despite the coronavirus pandemic while China's growth rate is slowing due to self-induced reasons.</p>

<p>Defying China's anger, United States Senator Marsha Blackburn landed in Taiwan late Thursday (August 25), marking the fourth visit by an American politician this month.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When she met Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Friday, Blackburn referred to Taiwan as a "country" and promised support for the island to become "independent", a report by South China Morning Post (SCMP) stated.</p>

US Senator refers to Taiwan as 'country', vows support to help it become an 'independent nation'

<p>The third visit by a US dignitary this month landed in Taiwan on Thursday, rejecting calls from Beijing to stop the excursions by a US congressman on the Senate Commerce and Armed Services committees.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On board a US military plane, Senator Marsha Blackburn arrived in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, according to live television footage from the nearby Songshan Airport. According to Blackburn's office, Douglas Hsu, director general of Taiwan's foreign affairs ministry, greeted her on the airport runway.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Taiwan is our strongest partner in the Indo-Pacific Region. Regular high-level visits to Taipei are long-standing US policy," Blackburn said in a statement. "I will not be bullied by Communist China into turning my back on the island."</p>

More US lawmakers to visit Taiwan despite China's anger

<p>The double-digit increase in Taiwan's budget comes after heightened Chinese aggression due to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taipei.</p>

<p>Marking the island's sixth consecutive year of growth in defence spending since 2017, the budget includes an additional T$108.3 billion in spending for fighter jets and other equipment.</p>

<p>In comparison with the island's defence spending growth in recent years, the double-digit rise on 2022 marks a sharp increase as the 13.9 per cent year-on-year increase will make it a record T$586.3 billion ($19.41 billion).</p>

<p>As US lawmakers led by senator Ed Markey wrapped up the second US congressional delegation just weeks after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, the Chinese daily 'Global Times' accused the US media of 'historical nihilism ' by distorting Taiwan's history.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Washington elites fantasize about crossing China's red line using "salami slicing" approach, but the existence of "Taiwan secessionist" regime is the salami that will be eventually cut by history." said the Chinese mouthpiece.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In military parlance, 'salami slicing', also known as 'cabbage strategy' refers to the divide and conquer process of threats and alliances used to overcome opposition and the means by which, the aggressor can influence and ultimately dominate a landscape.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In China's context, salami slicing refers to its strategy of acquiring new territories, at the expense of its neighbours. The Doklam standoff, the capture of Aksai-chin, and the annexation of Tibet are only a few out of many, yet glaring examples of China's aggressive foreign policy and expansionist policy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 1996, a United States Institute of Peace report on the territorial disputes in the South China Sea wrote, "[…] analysts point to Chinese "salami tactics," in which China is said to test the other claimants through aggressive actions, then back off when it meets significant resistance."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The term was coined by Stalinist dictator Mátyás Rákosi during the 1940s. He used the term to justify the actions of the Hungarian Communist Party to grab complete power in Hungary.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tibet was an independent state after the fall of the Qing dynasty. In 1950, the People's Liberation Army entered Tibet and occupied the entire kingdom militarily. China seized Paracel Islands in 1974 from Vietnam and built Sansha City on the island to legitimise its illegal claim.</p>

<p>The acquisition of the Paracel Islands was followed by the capture of the Johnson Reef from Vietnam in 1988, the Mischief Reef in 1995, and the Scarborough Shoal in 2012; both from the Philippines in the South China Sea.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Recent skirmishes include the dispute over Senkaku islands, which China calls 'Diaoyu' and has been regularly sailing its coast guard into Japanese territorial waters.</p>

<p>The presence of more than 200 Chinese fishing vessels in the Whitsun reef caused the Philippines and Vietnam to file diplomatic protests against China, with the Philippines alleging that this 'is a prelude to a Chinese takeover of the maritime feature'.</p>

<p>The buck doesn't only stop here. Other than territorial claims, economic coercions like debt-trap diplomacy is also a feature of the modus operandi. Pakistan, Tajikistan, Malaysia, and several other African countries are overwhelmed with unsustainable loans and have been forced to cede strategic leverage to china.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The docking of Yuan Wang 5, a vessel capable of extensive surveillance at the Hambantota port of Sri Lanka proves China's financial and strategic muscle. The Yuan Wang 5, a ballistic missile and satellite tracking ship is a security concern for India as several ports in Tamil Nadu, Kerala will be on the ship's radar once it docks at Hambantota.</p>

<p>Sri Lanka tried, without success to ward off the ship but instead had to defer the dates of docking. Facing what is arguably its worst economic crisis, Sri Lanka can only be bailed out by IMF loans and a debt restructuring program, but Beijing so far has refused to reduce its loans.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The divide and conquer tactic is effective over a longer period of time as it presents the target with only two choices: either silently suffering China's salami slicing, or risking an expensive and dangerous war with China. The absence of strong responses from China's adversaries had also facilitated its takeover of territories, especially in the South China sea.</p>

<p>However, China's recent expeditions have triggered strong responses from its adversaries, notably in the case of Taiwan. Countries are increasingly seeking to form partnerships to counter China’s growing power.</p>
