The incident has since resulted in a scathing report by the country’s health watchdog following an investigation.&nbsp;

The report by New Zealand’s Health and Disability Commissioner Morag McDowell was published on Monday (September 4), with this being the second case of the same surgical tool being left in a patient’s body in just two years.&nbsp;

<h2>‘A never event’</h2>

An Alexis wound retractor, or AWR, was left inside the patient, a woman in her 20s, who had undergone a scheduled C-section at an Auckland city hospital in 2020.&nbsp;

McDowell’s report came after the initial investigation conducted by Te Whatu Ora Auckland claimed it had not failed to “exercise reasonable skill and care” towards the patient and claimed that her findings were influenced by “hindsight and outcome bias”.&nbsp;

However, McDowell found that the Te Whatu Ora Auckland is in breach of the code of patient rights. “There is substantial precedent to infer that when a foreign object is left inside a patient during an operation, the care fell below the appropriate standard,” she stated in the report. “It is a ‘never’ event”.&nbsp;

An AWR, a device used to draw back the edges of a wound during surgery, was left in her abdomen following her C-section, said the report. One of the nurses present during the operation told the commission that a count of all surgical instruments used in the procedure did not include the AWR.&nbsp;

But this could be because the AWR doesn’t go into the wound completely, unlike other tools, said the nurse. It was also found that a ‘large’ AWR was used during surgery but the surgeon found the tool insufficient and replaced it with an ‘extra-large’ AWR.&nbsp;

An extra large AWR described as “about the size of a dinner plate,” is designed to retract incisions up to 17 centimetres in diameter. The tool was removed from the patient’s abdomen, in 2021, around 18 months after the initial procedure after multiple appointments with her doctor.

Reportedly, on one occasion, the pain was so severe that she visited the emergency department at the hospital. The tool was only discovered after the patient underwent an abdominal CT scan since it was invisible to an X-ray.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Serious deviation’</h2>

McDowell acknowledged that the theatre staff involved was genuinely concerned and apologetic after listening to what the woman had gone through, but her scathing report was directed at Te Whatu Ora’s claims.

“Te Whatu Ora pointed to a lack of expert evidence to support the conclusion that [the code] had been breached and referenced known error rates,” McDowell wrote.&nbsp;

While she accepted that Te Whatu Ora was not aware of the risk an AWR could pose when surgically retained, McDowell had “little difficulty concluding that the retention of a surgical instrument in a person’s body falls well below the expected standard of care.”

“I do not consider it necessary to have specific expert advice to assist me in reaching that conclusion,” said McDowell calling the breach a “serious deviation” from the standard of care.&nbsp;

The boy, named Suleiman Hassan, went through an "internal decapitation" due to which his skull was detached from the top vertebrae of his spine after the accident, according to the news outlet. Scientifically, the condition is called 'bilateral atlanto occipital joint dislocation'. 
 
After the boy met with the accident, he was airlifted to Hadassah Medical Centre where he went for emergency surgery immediately. According to the doctors, his head was "almost completely detached from the base of his neck".

<h2>Rare surgery, slim survival chances</h2>

"Our ability to save the child was thanks to our knowledge and the most innovative technology in the operating room," he stated, adding that the doctor's team "fought for the boy's life". The surgeons also accepted that the recovery of the boy was no less than a miracle as there were&nbsp;only&nbsp;50 per cent chances of his survival. 
 
The operation happened last month, however, the results were not made public by the doctors till July. Recently, the hospital discharged Hassan with a cervical splint and the hospital stated that his recovery will still be monitored by the doctors. 
 
"The fact that such a child has no neurological deficits or sensory or motor dysfunction and that he is functioning normally and walking without any aid after such a long process is no small thing," said Dr Einav.

The head of the Catholic Church had breakfast Friday before spending "most of the morning in an armchair" rather than in bed, the Vatican said.

"This allowed him to read the newspapers and start working again," it said in a statement.

A woman in England recently visited a museum to see her own heart which was removed from her body 16 years ago by doctors during a life-saving transplant surgery. 
 
Jennifer Sutton, who hails from Ringwood in Hampshire, stated that it was "incredibly surreal" to see her own organ placed as an exhibit at Hunterian Museum in London. 
 
The 38-year-old Sutton said that she plans to promote organ donation which she described as "the greatest gift possible". 
 
Speaking to BBC, she said that now she was leading an active and busy life and plans to "keep myself going for as long as possible".

Sutton was studying at a university when she realised that she struggled to do moderate exercises, like walking up hills. 
 
The woman was quickly diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy, which is a health condition that restricts the ability of the heart to pump blood around the body and was informed by the doctor that she would die if she did not receive a transplant. 
 
The health of Sutton, who was then 22 years old, deteriorated rapidly while she remained on the transplant waiting list. In June 2007, she received the news that a donor has matched her sample. 
 
She had been facing anxiety from the age of 13 when her mother lost her life following the same surgery. 
 
"I remember waking up after the transplant and thinking 'Oh my goodness I am actually a new person'. I remember doing a little double thumbs up dance to my family and saying 'I made it I made it',” she said.

<h2>A heart at display</h2>

Sutton permitted the Royal College of Surgeons to use her heart for a display and it is now open for all to see at the museum in Holborn. 
 
"The minute you first walk in you think 'that used to be inside my body'," she said. 
 
"But it's quite nice too - it's like my friend. It kept me alive for 22 years and I'm quite proud of it really. I've seen lots of things in jars in my lifetime but to think that's actually mine is very weird,” she added. 
 
Sutton stated that she wanted to take steps for promoting organ donation and added it made life-defining moments, such as her wedding, happen which otherwise appeared impossible.

A new regulation that prohibits minors from undergoing gender transitioning procedures has taken effect in Florida, even as Republican state lawmakers plan to strengthen the restrictions even further.

From Thursday, doctors performing gender transition surgery or prescribing puberty blockers to treat gender dysphoria to those under 18&nbsp;could see their medical license getting revoked.

Although minors who are currently getting treated with puberty blockers or hormone therapies before Thursday would be allowed to continue the treatment, however they won’t be able to undergo sex reassignment surgeries under the new rule.

Moreover, GOP politicians are currently pushing through a bill in the Florida Senate that will make it a felony to provide any such gender-affirming care to minors, as well as ban state funds from being used to cover the same care for adults, reports CBS News.

Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who is expected to run against Joe Biden in 2024, is among the GOP lawmakers nationwide targeting gender-affirming care for minors.

The Democrats have said that they will file a lawsuit in the coming months and challenge the rule.

The proponents of the rule argue that that gender-affirming treatment for youths is experimental and not backed by robust clinical research.

Earlier, Joe Biden criticised the regulation saying that it's not like a child wakes up one day and decides to change their gender.

“It’s just terrible what they’re doing,”&nbsp;Biden told “The Daily Show” earlier this week.

“It’s not like, you know, a kid wakes up one morning and says, ‘You know, I decided I wanted to become a man,’ or ‘I want to become a woman’ … I mean, what are they thinking about here?”

“It’s cruel,” the President added.

DeSantis hit back, tweeting, “It is not ‘sinful’ to prohibit the mutilation of minors. It is not acceptable for the federal government to mandate that procedures like sex change operations be allowed for kids.”

A New Zealand court has mandated that health officials temporarily seize custody of a child who is embroiled in&nbsp;a dispute over blood transfusions from donors who have received the COVID-19 vaccine.&nbsp;The four-month-old child is in an Auckland hospital receiving emergency treatment for a cardiac condition. His parents had opposed the procedure and had asked a judge to order that he get blood from unvaccinated donors instead. The High Court, however, decided that the procedure was in the child's "best interest."

The boy, called&nbsp;Baby W in court documents, was put under the court's guardianship "from the date of the order until completion of his operation and post-operative rehabilitation," Justice Ian Gault said.

He agreed with health officials that the boy's "life [was] truly contingent on the application being granted," and he rejected the parents' plea&nbsp;for unvaccinated blood, calling it superfluous and non-viable, as reported by the BBC.&nbsp;

However, he emphasised that the boy's parents remained his primary caregivers and insisted that doctors must always keep them updated on the boy's status and course of treatment.

The High Court, however, decided that the procedure was in the child's "best interest."

Sue Grey, the attorney for the parents, also asked Justice Gault to denounce the establishment of a customised donor programme using only blood from unvaccinated donors. Grey said that the vaccine's long-term effects were "untested" and charged physicians of refusing to offer an alternative donor service due to their ideological beliefs.

The development of any direct donor service, however, would have been a "slippery slope," according to the state blood service's attorney, and would "destroy a good blood service."

According to scientists, a skeleton found in a remote area of Borneo rewrites the history of ancient medicine and provides evidence that amputation surgery was successfully performed some 31,000 years ago.&nbsp;

The earliest known amputation, a 7,000-year-old skeleton discovered in France, was previously thought to have only occurred in developed agricultural communities.&nbsp;

The discovery also implies that East Kalimantan in Indonesia's modern province of the Stone Age hunter-gatherers had extensive medical knowledge of anatomy and wound care.&nbsp;

Tim Maloney, a research fellow at Australia's Griffith University and the project's principal investigator, said the findings "rewrite&nbsp;our understanding of the development of this medical knowledge."

The skeleton was discovered in 2020 in the massive Liang Tebo cave, which is famous for its 40,000-year-old wall paintings.&nbsp;

In the surgery performed last week, a piece of rope was run down the entire length of her spine. Then, screws were inserted into each section of the spine to assist in producing the proper tension on the rope and correcting the curve, according to the Gulf News.

The operation was touted as a success as Salma was seen making a remarkable recovery following her operation. She is not only back to walking, but she also plans to return to tennis soon.

VBT is currently practised only in a handful of countries, including the US, France, and Germany.

It was in April that&nbsp;Salma's parents noticed an unusual curve in her spine. They were later shocked to find out that their 13-year-old daughter had scoliosis—a condition in which there is an abnormal lateral curve of the spine.

According to doctors, she suffered deformity of the back with shortening of the trunk, lower back hump, unlevelled pelvis, and back pain.

Scoliosis develops in early childhood, but its onset is witnessed in children aged between 10 and 15 years, occurring equally among both genders.

If left untreated, moderate to severe scoliosis can lead to pain, increasing deformity, and potential heart and lung problems.

Though spinal fusion is the most common surgery performed to treat scoliosis, it limits spinal mobility and subsequent growth.

In 2019, the USFDA approved a new treatment called Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT), a minimally invasive technique that allows for continued growth without fusion while preserving motion and flexibility.

The new treatment enables fusion-less spine correction, allowing the patient to experience the full range of motion and further growth. Its other advantages include discreet incisions, minimal trauma, fewer complications, and faster healing.

12-week-old puppy has surgery after swallowing 20 coins from owner’s purse

Having informed his parents of having ingested a 5-cm-long battery and the parents' decision of seeking immediate medical help has saved the life of a 4-year-old.&nbsp;

By accident, the child had swallowed the battery that was being used in the remote control, while playing with it at his residence. An X-ray revealed that the battery was lodged in the child's stomach.&nbsp;

However, doctors managed to remove the battery via an endoscopy, thus avoiding further delay and the complications associated with going in for a surgical procedure.&nbsp;

WION Media spoke to Dr R. Ravi who performed the procedure in a considerable amount of time and saved the boy, nearly fourteen hours after he ingested the battery.

According to the doctor, senior gastroenterologist, Rela Hospital, children unknowingly swallow small objects such as buttons, coins, small batteries.&nbsp;

However, in this case, the swallowed object measured 5cms in length and 1.5cms in width, which was as large as the child's food pipe.&nbsp;

This also made the removal via endoscopy complicated. There was a risk of damaging the internal organs while performing the procedure, neither would the battery exit the system via excretion.&nbsp;

"There is also the risk of the battery corroding in the acid that the stomach produces and thereby releasing the chemicals that it holds within. Such heavy metals could lead to toxicity in the patient's system," Dr Ravi said.

New York state on Saturday added more hospitals to its list of those ordered to postpone elective surgeries for at least two weeks as the surge in COVID-19 cases threatens to overwhelm hospitals.

The size of the list has fluctuated since early December, when an executive order issued by Gov. Kathy Hochul went into effect to limit elective surgeries before another spike in cases. There were 28 hospitals on the list as recently as December 20.

“We will use every available tool to help ensure that hospitals can manage the COVID-19 winter surge,” Dr. Mary T. Bassett, the acting health commissioner, said in a statement Saturday. “I want to remind New Yorkers that getting vaccinated and boosted remain the best way to protect against serious illness and hospitalisation from COVID-19. Vaccination also protects our hospital system. We cannot return to the early months of the pandemic when hospitals were overwhelmed.”

The odds of a woman dying, experiencing complications, or being readmitted to the hospital are much higher when she undergoes surgery with a male surgeon than if the procedure is performed by a woman, research suggests.

Based on a study of 1.3 million patients, researchers have found that when a man instead of a woman performs surgery, women are 15 per cent more likely to have a bad outcome and 32 per cent more likely to die.

The study is the first of its kind to examine the link between the sex of a patient and the sex of his or her surgeon and the outcome of surgery. The study examined three types of "adverse postoperative outcomes": death, readmission to the hospital and complications within 30 days.

Many of the 21 types of surgery analysed showed a higher chance of a woman dying, being readmitted or having complications when a man performed the surgery.

It has sparked a debate over the fact that surgery in the UK remains a largely male-dominated field and claims that "implicit sex bias" among male surgeons may explain why women face greater risks when having an operation.

Jerath remarked that these results were concerning, as there should be no difference in patient outcomes based on the gender of the surgeon.

No matter what gender the surgeon was, men who had operations had the same outcomes. However, when the procedure was performed by a female surgeon, women experienced better outcomes. The experience was the same for men and women operated on by a female surgeon.

Jerath held that gender differences in the technical training of surgeons were unlikely to account for the results, as both sexes undergo the same level of training.

According to her, implicit sex biases -- in which surgeons act on subconscious, deeply ingrained prejudices, stereotypes and attitudes -- might explain how this happens. It may also be related to men and women having different communication and interpersonal skills, she said. Moreover, significant differences in the work styles, decision-making, and judgement of male and female physicians can be another factor.

A marathon seven-hour long surgery involving eight doctors and 24 nurses was performed in the southern Indian city of Chennai to save the life of a 4-year old whose small intestine had stopped functioning.

The complicated surgery involved precisely removing 150cm of the father’s small intestine and transplanting it to his son.

More than three months after the surgery, as the father and son are going about their daily lives, doctors opened up on the extremely rare condition faced by the boy and the transplant that they performed.&nbsp;

It all began when Guhan, a four-year-old boy, developed sudden and erratic vomiting.

Upon visiting a hospital, the family learnt that their son was diagnosed with a condition known as ‘volvulus’, which meant that his smaller intestine was twisted and thereby cut off from blood flow.

Hence, all the cells in his small intestine were dying and the organ was losing its function. With the absorption of nutrients being the key function of the small intestine, this organ’s failure was a serious threat to the young boy’s life.&nbsp;

With no option left, the parents had to allow the doctors to remove their son’s small intestine entirely in order to save him.

However, the young boy had to endure extreme hardships as he had to be endlessly hooked onto intravenous feeding (nutrients being fed directly into the bloodstream), even for his basic sustenance.

He just couldn’t be fed like kids of his age, as the food he ingests normally would cause further health complications in his already fragile body.&nbsp;

Later, after consulting Rela Hospital in Chennai, the family was made aware of the possibility of intestinal transplantation. Despite the risks, the family went ahead with the procedure, as it was the only hope for saving their ailing son.

Swaminathan, Guhan’s father donated 150cm of his small intestine —which could be as long as six meters—for the transplant.&nbsp;

Dr Naresh Shanmugam, senior consultant, Liver and Gastro specialist for children, explained that volvulus can occur&nbsp;only twice in thousand cases, and was an issue seen during the initial growth years.

He added that twisted intestines could surgically be untwisted when the condition is detected early enough.

When queried about how the 150cm transplanted small intestine could carry out the function of the organ that spans up to six meters in length, he told WION that it would eventually be functional and can last the boy his entire lifetime.&nbsp;

According to prof. Mohamed Rela, who headed the team that performed the surgery, such transplants always faced the risk of organ rejection by the recipient.

However in this case, adequate care was provided to mitigate that issue. He also explained that such intestine transplants can’t be done from one living adult to another. In the case of adults, such organs can only be removed from cadavers, he added.&nbsp;

With the surgery being successfully completed on September 13 last year, Guhan had to completely depend on intravenous nutrition for several months.

Gradually, as the new organ was accepted by his system, he began to consume food normally.

According to Guhan’s parents, going in for a transplant was terrifying, but they went ahead with it, owing to the doctors’ reassurance and for giving their son a second chance at life.&nbsp;

“For those that suffer failure of the small intestine, only intravenous nutrition would be possible. However, even that is not viable after 10-15 years. In most cases, it leads to gradual loss of life,” Rela explained.

Intestine transplants are not as common as liver of kidney transplants, he added.

Kwon Dae-hee, then a university junior, died of haemorrhage in October 2016 after 49 days in a coma as a result of a jawline surgery in Seoul, his mother Lee Na-geum, 61, told Reuters.

Lee, who has been holding a one-person protest in front of the parliament since January 2018, said her son was traumatised by bullying in high school for his prominent chin, and he was determined to undergo the 6.5 million won ($5,600) cosmetic surgery.

Lee obtained CCTV footage of her son's surgery, but she said there are hundreds of parents who will never know if their child's death on the operating table was the result of malpractice.

She also said she had reviewed the seven-and-a-half hour long footage of Kwon's surgery more than 1,000 times and was able to prove that it was performed in part by an unqualified nursing assistant and an intern doctor, not by the chief plastic surgeon as promised.

This led to Kwon losing over 3.5 litres of blood and he died of excessive bleeding.

With the video evidence she collected, Lee sued the hospital and the head surgeon, who was later found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to three years in prison.

"There are so many unfortunate bereaved families who cannot reveal the truth because they don't have physical evidence when a healthy person dies in an operating room."

Multiple attempts had been made to amend the Medical Services Act to require surveillance cameras, primarily to stop doctors from delegating surgeries to unlicensed personnel, an act which is subject to a maximum of five years in prison or 50 million won ($43,000) fine.

Up to now, such attempts had died due to lobbying by doctors, said Lee who began an advocacy group for medical justice and patients' rights.

The bill was met with objections from doctors, hospitals and medical groups, including the 140,000-member&nbsp;Korean Medical Association (KMA), which claims video monitoring will undermine trust in doctors, violate patient privacy and discourage doctors from taking risks to save lives.

"We think trust is key in doctor-patient relationship... the bill undermines doctors to actively recommend treatment methods and treating patients," KMA spokeswoman Park Soo-hyun said before the bill passed.

Andrea Dovizioso will take part in the start of the 2020 MotoGP season next month after undergoing surgery on his left collarbone, his team Ducati said on Monday.
