It added that matrimonial litigation pending for years “needs to be put to end by granting effective release to the parties from a stale and frozen relationship.”The Supreme Court exercised its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution and dissolved the marriage of two government doctors who had been living separately for over 15 years. The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a plea seeking menstrual leaves for working women and female students across India and said that if menstrual leaves are made mandatory at workplaces, it would hinder job opportunities for women as firms won’t be willing to hire them anymore. The Supreme Court of India stayed the University Grants Commission (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2026, on Thursday amid the row across the country. The move comes after the notified new UGC regulations on January 23 were challenged by several petitioners for being arbitrary, exclusionary, discriminatory and violating the Constitution as well as the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. According to a report in the news agency ANI, the apex court stated that, for now, the 2012 UGC regulations will continue to apply. It also noted that Regulation 3 (C) (which defines caste-based discrimination) is vague, and it can be misused. "The language needs to be re-modified," the Court said. The sale will only be allowed at designated locations identified by district collectors and police commissioners, who have also been directed to publicise these sites widely.To ensure compliance, the police and local administrations have been tasked with forming patrolling teams to monitor these sales. These teams are expected to verify QR codes on cracker packages, conduct random checks, and ensure only licensed manufacturers’ products are sold. Firecrackers sold online will remain strictly prohibited. The Court also directed that crackers manufactured outside the NCR should not enter the region, and that non-NEERI-certified products must be seized immediately.<h2>But, what about Delhi's ‘poor’ AQI</h2>The Supreme Court has directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to monitor the Air Quality Index from October 14 to 21 and submit its findings to the Court, including samples of sand and water from major bursting sites. &nbsp;
