India, which is among the largest troop contributors to the UN peacekeeping, will deploy two medical teams in the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan after a request by UN chief Antonio Guterres to scale-up health infrastructure in the areas managed by the Indian peacekeepers to help contain the COVID-19 outbreak.

India's Permanent Mission to the UN said in a statement that the country responded to a request from UN Secretary-General Guterres and mobilised all efforts to assemble two teams of medical specialists to be deployed in hospitals at the UN missions in DR Congo and South Sudan.

"This gesture has been welcomed,"&nbsp;the Indian mission said.

India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti on Friday tweeted: "Indian peacekeepers rise to the call to combat COVID! In response to request of UN Secretary General, India is rushing two medical teams to Africa to strengthen Indian peacekeeping hospitals - one in Goma, DR Congo and other in Juba, South Sudan."

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage across the world, the UN Secretariat has set up a System-Wide Medical Evacuation Task Force to ensure high quality treatment facilities for people serving the United Nations in field locations.
Guterres has decided to scale-up the Level-2 and Level-3 hospital facilities, managed by the Indian peacekeepers, at the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) to mitigate and contain the COVID-19 outbreak at these two locations.

Based on a request, India will be deploying two medical teams of 15 medical personnel each at Goma in the DRC and Juba in South Sudan in the second half of September, 2020.

The main hub of command and control centre of MONUSCO is located in Goma, where the hospital by India has been operational since January, 2005 and has 90 Indian nationals including 18 specialists.

Due to the increasing number of coronavirus cases in the area, the ?Level-3' facility, which is the highest level of medical care provided by a deployed UN unit, will now further be upgraded to a Level-3 Plus facility.

In Juba, the 'Level-2 plus' hospital by India, operational since December, 2016, has 77 Indians, including 12 specialists.

The Indian facility in Juba is presently one of the top-level of medical facilities existing in South Sudan. This facility will now be upgraded from Level-2 plus to a Level-3 facility.

Of the total 16,306 troops deployed with UNMISS, India contributes the largest number of troops at 2,420 personnel.

The country is the second largest contributor of troops to MONUSCO, with 2,030 Indian troops deployed with the UN Mission, which has a total of 15,159 peacekeepers.

India's long-standing contribution to the UN peacekeeping has been widely lauded by the world organisation. Women of the Indian Armed Forces Medical Services headed to the UN Peacekeeping mission in the Republic of Congo (ONUC) in 1960 to assist with the set-up of a 400-bed hospital.

India currently contributes military and police personnel to the UN peacekeeping operations in Abyei, Cyprus, the DRC, Lebanon, the Middle East, Sudan, South Sudan and Western Sahara as well as one expert to the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia.

Over the last 70 years, more than 160 Indian military, police and civilian personnel have lost their lives while serving in the UN peacekeeping missions around the world, the highest from any troop-contributing country.

India to deploy two medical teams in DR Congo, S Sudan to help combat COVID-19

Sudan's power-sharing government signed a peace agreement with key rebel groups on Monday (August 31), a significant step towards resolving deep-rooted conflicts from the long rule of ousted leader Omar al-Bashir.

Sudan: Rebels groups agree to sign peace deal

9/11 made the US launch its war on terror. Osama Bin Laden and his Al-Qaeda were the top targets. So too were the states which sponsored terrorism. Sudan was one of them.

9/11 made the US launch its war on terror. Osama Bin Laden and his Al-Qaeda were the top targets. So too were the states which sponsored terrorism. Sudan was one of them. Nearly 20 years later, America is easing up on Sudan. Mike Pompeo has become the first US Secretary of State to visit Khartoum in 15 years. So, why is America seeking deeper ties with Sudan? Reason number one: Democracy The pretext under which America usually interferes in countries. America likes to project itself as the promoter of democracy, Sudan fits the bill. Its Islamic dictator, Omar al Bashir, was ousted last year. Now, civilians and military leaders have a power-sharing agreement. In 2022, Sudan will hold its first democratic elections in nearly three decades. Also read: Pompeo addresses RNC for Trump from Jerusalem, sparks criticism The next two years will decide how Sudan will shape up. China and Russia may step in and, encourage authoritarian rule. But, if America moves first Sudan can give an opening in an already fragile neighbourhood. Reason number two: Sanctions For Sudan's democracy to succeed ----- it needs a strong economy. But, Sudan has lived under the US Sanctions for nearly three decades. These sanctions were imposed to stop Bashir from supporting terrorists like Osama bin Laden. Sudan remains on America's list of states that sponsor terrorism. So it cannot turn to international lenders. To remove Sudan from the list US is asking for compensation worth 300 million dollars. For American victims of Al Qaeda attacks on two US embassies in Africa. Sudan had earlier agreed to compensate families of USS Cole bombing. But, the latest request has angered the cash-strapped Sudanese govt. The Trump administration finds itself in a fix ----- as this compensation matter is a legal issue. Reason number three: West Asia Mike Pompeo is jet-setting in the Arab world. From Israel, he came to Sudan and, proceeded to Bahrain, Libya and Oman. He intends to urge Arab states to become friends with Israel ----- like the United Arab Emirates. America thinks such alliances will rattle Iran and, bring stability to the Middle-East. But, Israel is a sensitive issue in Sudan. Under Bashir, Sudan was among the hardline Muslim foes of Israel. The hate for Israel is still strong among the masses. The trouble in the region doesn't end here. Sudan conflicts with Ethiopia and Egypt over the river Nile. America's attempt to mediate has failed and has played a part in handicapping Sudan. Now, it wants to rectify the wrongs of the past. But, diplomacy involves giving and take.

Mike Pompeo's Sudan visit: Why is America seeking deeper ties with African nation?

For two decades, U.S. punished the Sudan for helping Osama Bin Laden. But, things have changed. Democracy has toppled dictatorship. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visit to Khartoum says it all. Palki Sharma Upadhyay explains how U.S. views the Sudan as a key state in the Arab World.

Sudan is preparing a mass vaccination campaign against polio after an outbreak, the UN said Friday, days after the declaration of the eradication of wild poliovirus in Africa.

On Tuesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrated the announcement that Africa was free of cases of the wild virus that causes the crippling disease, a landmark in a decades-long campaign to eradicate it.

The 13 cases in Sudan are derived from a vaccine, which can take place in rare cases when the weakened virus in the vaccine mutates, a problem in countries with low immunisation rates and poor sanitation, health experts say.

"This is the first polio outbreak in Sudan in more than a decade, and has affected nine states across the country," the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan said.

The first case was recorded on August 9, and areas affected include the war-ravaged western region of Darfur, it said.

"At least 13 cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus have been confirmed," it added.

The Sudanese health ministry, alongside UN agencies, is planning to vaccinate five million children aged under five.

"Although Africa was recently declared free of the wild poliovirus... vaccine-derived polio persists and poses a threat to many countries," the statement said.

"Neighbouring Ethiopia, Central African Republic and Chad also reported cases, which puts more risks on Sudan, especially in the Darfur region, due to border movements."

An oral vaccine given to young children has been massively effective against polio around the world.

Vaccine-derived outbreaks are stopped by using the same health tactics as eradicated wild polio.

That includes the intense monitoring of populations and ensuring high vaccination coverage.

Poliomyelitis -- the medical term for polio -- is an acutely infectious and contagious virus which attacks the spinal cord and causes irreversible paralysis in children.

It is typically spread in the faeces of an infected person and is picked up through contaminated water or food.

Pope Francis on Saturday called for dialogue between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan on Saturday, urging them not to let a dispute over a dam on the Nile lead to conflict.

Pope Francis on Saturday called for dialogue between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan on Saturday, urging them not to let a dispute over a dam on the Nile lead to conflict. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which is being built some 15 km (9 miles) from Ethiopia's border with Sudan, has become a major source of discord between the three countries. Also read: Why River Nile is bone of contention between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia "I invite all parties involved to continue on the path of dialogue so that the eternal river will continue to be a source of life, which unites and does not divide, which nurtures friendship, prosperity and fraternity and not enmity, misunderstanding and conflict," the pontiff said. He was giving his Angelus message for Assumption Day, the most important Catholic feast dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Egypt, which fears the dam project could lead to water shortages upstream, has threatened to withdraw from the latest round of discussions. Sudan is concerned about the dam's safety.

Pope calls for dialogue between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan to resolve Nile dam issue

There is a dam that's coming up on the River Nile.&nbsp;Once complete, it will be the largest in Africa. A matter of pride for Ethiopia, who is building it. But, a matter of life and death for Egypt and Sudan. Since the project began in 2011, the three countries have been locked in a diplomatic conflict. Ethiopia has erected the dam on the Blue Nile. One of Nile's two tributaries that flows into Egypt and Sudan. So, both Sudan and Egypt fear the dam could lead to water shortages in their own lands. Nearly 100 million Egyptians rely on Nile for fresh water. It is a source of life and livelihood, especially for farmers. Same is the case with Sudan, which is also concerned about its own smaller dams running dry. The three countries met earlier this month to find a common ground.

Since Ethiopia is adamant on making the dam operational, Egypt and Sudan wanted assurances about the volume of water that will be released each year. Particularly during the years of drought. They asked Ethiopia to inform them before filling up the dam. But, the talks fell apart. Now, the tension along the river Nile is escalating. The grand Ethiopian renaissance dam is filling up. Ethiopia is blaming heavy rainfall. But, Egypt and Sudan are not ready to buy that argument. Egypt has asked for clarification. But, Sudan says Ethiopia has shut the gates.

Ethiopia is disregarding these protests as the dam holds economic importance. The four billion dollar dam will double the country's power capacity to 6,500 megawatt. With that, Ethiopia will become Africa's biggest power exporter. It will provide power to 65 million Ethiopians and run their businesses. Ethiopia does not want to let go of the chance. It is seeking to undo agreements signed way back in 1920s with the British as the overseeing power.

Another agreement in 1959 increased the flow of water to Egypt and Sudan. Since 1960s, Ethiopia repeatedly tried to secure control over the Blue Nile's waters. The chance came in 2011 as Egypt rocked under the Arab Springs. Ethiopia made use of the diversion to begin building the dam. Egypt threatened to send troops to stop the construction. By 2015, both Egypt and Sudan were ready for negotiations.

In 2018, Egypt sent troops to the Sudanese border. Over 2019 and 2020, the US Offered to mediate and in February, the US and World Bank failed to secure an agreement. Now, the African Union has come forward to be the broker. But, the question remains as Nile stops to flow freely, can the conflict lead to war?

A gunman in Darfur, Sudan, killed more than 20 civilians, witnesses have claimed. The incident took place after the field workers returned to their fields for the first time in years.

The victims included two women and few children. This happened when displaced farmers returned back to their fields after they finalised a deal with the local government which involved the landowners and those who care of their fields.

The incident has been confirmed by the tribal chief and witness Ibrahim Ahmad.

Sudan's Law Minister Nasredeen Abdulbari has announced that female genital mutilation (FGM) will be banned throughout the country, and women will no longer need a permit to travel. Non-Muslims will also be allowed to drink alcohol in private.

Non-Muslims will no longer be criminalised for drinking alcohol in private, justice minister Nasredeen Abdulbari told state television.&nbsp;

The relaxation of alcohol rules is major turnaround from nearly 40 years of hardline Islamist policies. The United Nations reports that some three percent of the population is non-Muslim.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) has long been viewed, especially in rural communities, as a "rite of passage" for girls and a way to preserve their chastity.

In Sudan, nearly nine out of 10 girls fall victim to what is known as FGM or genital cutting, according to the United Nations.

In its most brutal form, it involves the removal of the labia and clitoris, often in unsanitary conditions and without anesthesia.

The wound is then sewn shut, often causing cysts and infections and leaving women to suffer severe pain during sex and childbirth complications later in life.

Rights groups have for years decried as barbaric the practice which can lead to the myriad physical, psychological and sexual complications and, in the most tragic cases, death.

The leaders of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia have agreed that Ethiopia will refrain from filling its new hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile next month and return to talks aimed at reaching an agreement among the three nations on use of the river's waters, according to statements from Egypt and Sudan.

The announcement was a modest reprieve from weeks of bellicose rhetoric and escalating tensions over the USD 4.6 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which Ethiopia had vowed to start filling at the start of the rainy season in July.

There was no immediate comment from Ethiopia on Friday's statement, beyond a tweet from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed that described an African Union summit discussion about the dam as "fruitful".

Ethiopia has hinged its development ambitions on the mega-project, describing the dam as a crucial lifeline to bring millions out of poverty.

Just last week, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedu Andargachew declared that his country would start filling the dam's reservoir, after the latest round of talks with Egypt and Sudan failed to reach an accord governing how the dam will be filled and operated.

After the African Union video conference chaired by South Africa on Friday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi said that "all parties" had pledged not to take "any unilateral action" by filling the dam without a final agreement, said Bassam Radi, Egypt's presidency spokesman.

Sudan's state-run media also reported that the impasse between the Nile basin countries had eased, saying the countries had agreed to restart negotiations through a technical committee with the aim of reaching a deal in two weeks.

Sticking points in the talks have been how much water Ethiopia will release downstream from the dam if a multi-year drought occurs and how Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan will resolve any future disagreements.

Both Egypt and Sudan have appealed to the UN Security Council to intervene in the years-long dispute and help the Nile basin countries avert a crisis. The council is set to hold a public meeting on the issue Monday.

Filling the dam without an agreement could bring the stand-off to a critical juncture. Both Egypt and Ethiopia have hinted at military steps to protect their interests, and experts fear a breakdown in talks could lead to open conflict.

Also read| Egypt is committed to a diplomatic solution to Ethiopia's dam crisis: Sisi There was no immediate comment from Ethiopia on Friday's statement, beyond a tweet from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed that described an African Union summit discussion about the dam as "fruitful". Ethiopia has hinged its development ambitions on the mega-project, describing the dam as a crucial lifeline to bring millions out of poverty. Egypt, which relies on the Nile for more than 90% of its water supplies and already faces high water stress, fears a devastating impact on its booming population of 100 million. Sudan's ousted president Omar al-Bashir on Wednesday lost an appeal against a sentence of two years in detention for corruption, his lawyer said.

"The appeals court upheld the conviction but we will file an appeal in the supreme court because we're fully convinced there is no case" against Bashir, Hashem al-Jaali told AFP.

At the time of his conviction in December, it was ruled that Bashir, who is 76, would serve his time in a correctional centre for the elderly as laid down by Sudanese law.

But pending rulings in other cases -- the killings of demonstrators in protests that led to Bashir's fall last April and the 1989 coup that brought him to power -- he remains in Khartoum's Kober prison.

Bashir was in December convicted of "corruption" and unlawful "possession of foreign currency".

The judiciary ordered the confiscation of 6.9 million euros, $351,770 and 5.7 million Sudanese pounds found at Bashir's home.

Bashir admitted to having received a total of $90 million from Saudi leaders and the trial centred on $25 million received from Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Bashir said the money seized from his home came out of the $25 million.

The funds, he said, formed part of Sudan's strategic relations with Saudi Arabia and were "not used for private interests but as donations".

The trials in Sudan do not relate to charges Bashir faces at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Bashir has been wanted by the ICC for his role in the Darfur war that broke out in 2003, when ethnic minority rebels took up arms against his&nbsp;Arab-dominated government.

After three decades of Bashir's rule, the Sudanese military reacted to mounting popular anger and ousted him after months of street demonstrations.

The report said the settlement had been signed on February&nbsp;7. It did not mention the amount paid in compensation, but a source with knowledge of the deal, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Sudan had agreed to settle the case for $30 million.

The 17 sailors were killed, and dozens of others injured, in the attack on October&nbsp;12, 2000, when two men in a small boat detonated explosives alongside the Navy guided missile destroyer as it was refueling in the southern Yemeni port of Aden.

Khartoum agreed to settle "only for the purpose of fulfilling the condition set by the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-confirms-key-plotter-in-uss-cole-attack-has-been-killed-188597">US&nbsp;administration</a> to remove Sudan from its list of state sponsors of terrorism", SUNA said, citing the justice ministry.

Removal from the list potentially opens the door for foreign investment.

"The government of Sudan would like to point out that the settlement agreement explicitly affirmed that the government was not responsible for this incident or any terrorist act," the justice ministry said in its statement, cited by SUNA said.

The announcement comes two days after Khartoum and rebel groups agreed that all those wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes and genocide in the Darfur region should appear before the tribunal. The list includes Sudan's ousted president Omar al-Bashir.

The US&nbsp;sailors' relatives had sued Sudan under the 1976 Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, which generally bars suits against foreign countries except those designated by the United States as a sponsor of terrorism, as Sudan has been since 1993.

Sudan did not defend against the claims in court. In 2014, a trial judge found that Sudan's aid to al Qaeda "led to the murders" of the 17 Americans and awarded the families about $35 million, including $14 million in punitive damages.

Sudan then tried to void the judgment, arguing the lawsuit was not properly served on its foreign minister, violating notification requirements under <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-confirms-key-plotter-in-uss-cole-attack-has-been-killed-188597">US&nbsp;</a>and international law.

Last week, we had got you a report on the starving lions in Sudan. Since then, a social media campaign has kicked off to save them. There is new hope for the big cats in Khartoum.

Gravitas: How social media saved Sudan's starving lions

Months of political and economic turmoil in Sudan has severely damaged the health of the lions faced with shortages of food and medicine. Lions, victims of the political upheaval in Sudan, are starving.&nbsp;

Last week, WION did a special report to show how weak and wasted, malnourished the king of the jungle looks in Sudan.&nbsp;

After the special coverage by Wion and some online campaigns, there's new hope for the big cats at Al-Qurashi park zoo in Khartoum.

The online campaign with the hashtag #sudananimalrescue , was launched by Sudanese activist Osman Salih.&nbsp;

The images of the feeble cats created a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/social-media-in-uproar-after-emaciated-african-lion-images-go-viral-275561">stir on social media</a>. Following which a global welfare organisation - Four Paws, arrived to assess the condition of the lions. However, it was too late for one of the lions who recently died due to dehydration and lack of food.

A team of international wildlife conservationists flew in Monday to examine four starving and sick lions at a zoo in the Sudanese capital where a lioness died last week. Months of political and economic turmoil that rocked Sudan from late 2018 severely damaged the health of the lions faced with shortages of food and medicine. The five-member rapid response team from Four Paws was conducting tests on the lions at Al-Qurashi park zoo where the animals have been held for years, an AFP correspondent reported. Foreign experts in Sudan to examine sick lions

At least 32 people were killed Wednesday when suspected nomadic Misseriya herders from Sudan attacked a village in the disputed oil-rich region of Abyei along the border of South Sudan, a local official said.

Abyei has been contested since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, while there have long been tensions between the South Sudanese Ngok Dinka community and the Misseriya herders who traverse the area looking for grazing.

Kuol Alor Kuol, the chief administrator of the Abyei area, told AFP that heavily armed Misseriya and allied militia attacked the village of Kolom early on Wednesday.

"Thirty-two people were killed among them children and women, and secondly about 24 people are wounded ... and about 15 people including children were abducted and 20 houses burned," Kuol said.

He said the wounded had been evacuated to a hospital in the town of Agok which is run by Doctors Without Borders (MSF).&nbsp;

In 2011, the UN Security Council deployed a peacekeeping force to the area after deadly clashes displaced some 100,000 people.

The United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei (UNISFA) is made up entirely of Ethiopian troops, with some 4,500 soldiers on the ground.

UNISFA could not be immediately reached for comment on the attack.

The UN Security Council in 2018 warned that the situation in Abyei and along the Sudan-South Sudan border "continues to constitute a serious threat to international peace," and called on the two countries to show concrete progress on border demarcation and monitoring.

Gravitas: Viral photos of starving lions kicks off global campaign

A Facebook campaign 'Sudananimalrescue' has been launched to save five malnourished and sick African lions held at cages in Sudan's capital, Khartoum.

"I was shaken when I saw these lions at the park ... Their bones are protruding from the skin", wrote Osman Salih on Facebook as he launched an online campaign under the slogan #Sudananimalrescue.

"I urge interested people and institutions to help them," Salih added.

African lions, caged in Khartoum’s Al-Qureshi park, have not received enough food and medicines for weeks now, reports say.

People of the area are demanding to move the lions to some other place where they can get enough food and proper treatment to survive.

Park officials say that the Lions have lost almost two-thirds of their body weight, as the condition is degrading day by day.

“Food is not always available so often we buy it from our own money to feed them,” said Essamelddine Hajjar, a manager at the park, which is managed by the Khartoum municipality but is partly funded by private donors.

Sudan is in the middle of an economic crisis which led to soaring food prices and a shortage of currency.

It's not clear how many lions are in the park but several are at the Dinder park along the border with Ethiopia.

International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies African lions as "vulnerable" species. Their population dropped 43% between 1993 and 2014, only about 20,000 alive today.

On Sunday, some residents and journalists visited the park to take a look at the lions after the photographs went viral on social media.

One of the lions was tied up with a rope and was given fluids through a drip so that it may recover from dehydration, and there were chunks of rotten meat covered with flies near the cages said AFP reported, who took a tour of the park.

The condition of the park is also affecting the health of other animals, said officials at the park.

"They are suffering from severe illnesses,” a caretaker, Moataz Mahmoud, said. “They are sick and appear to be malnourished.”

Fineprint: Sudan court sentences 29 to death for teacher's killing in custody

A Sudanese court sentenced 29 members of the national intelligence service to death by hanging on Monday over the killing of a teacher in detention in February during protests that led to the overthrow of former president <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/former-sudan-president-bashir-sentenced-to-two-years-in-detention-for-corruption-268286">Omar al-Bashir</a>.

The group that spearheaded the protests welcomed the ruling, the first to deliver sentences over crackdowns on demonstrations in the months before and after Bashir was toppled in April.

Prosecuting members of the intelligence services is seen as a test of how far <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/egypt-ethiopia-sudan-views-come-closer-on-giant-nile-dam-sudanese-minister-269627">Sudan</a>'s transitional government will go to erase Bashir's legacy and challenge the security apparatus.

"This day is a victory for justice, a victory for all Sudanese and a victory for the revolution," teacher Ahmed al-Khair's brother Saad told reporters after the verdict.

Thirteen defendants were sentenced to prison terms and a further four were acquitted in the ruling, which could face several stages of appeal.

The judge listed 27 agents from Kassala, capital of eastern Kassala state, who received death sentences. Another two agents from Khashm al-Qirba, the town in Kassala state where teacher Khair was killed, were also sentenced to death, a lawyer said.

Khair's death became a rallying point during 16 weeks of protests against Bashir's rule. His family said security officials initially claimed he had died of poisoning, though days later a state investigation found he had died of injuries from beating.

Hundreds of people rallied outside the court in Omdurman where the verdict was delivered on Monday, some waving national flags or holding pictures of Khair.

They broke into celebration after the ruling. Security forces fired tear gas to try to clear the rally and reopen roads. One woman, who suffered from asthma, died after inhaling tear gas, according to a doctors' committee linked to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/sudans-bashir-names-new-pm-as-protest-leaders-dismiss-emergency-199253">the anti-Bashir protests</a>.

The Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), which spearheaded protests against Bashir, said the trial restored confidence in the judiciary.

"With this ruling, the revolution will have paid off its debt to the martyrs a first time, to be followed as many times as the number of martyrs," it said.

The SPA is an important member of the Forces of Freedom and Change coalition that struck a three-year power-sharing deal with the military in August.

Dozens of protesters were killed during crackdowns on the protests against Bashir, and dozens died when security forces cleared a sit-in pushing for further change in June.
