The conflict in Sudan has put the lives of millions of children at risk. Thousands have escaped but many are still trapped in the escalating violence. The UN’s children's agency says the closure of schools has also affected their mental health and well-being, and says the country is facing what it calls a 'generational catastrophe'.

Sudan unrest: Clashes, air strikes minutes after ceasefire started

The United Nations warned on Monday that the Sudan conflict can turn into an ethnically driven conflict if warring parties didn't respect and extend the ceasefire beginning Monday (May 22).

"The growing ethnicization of the conflict risks to expand and prolong it with implications for the region," UN special envoy to Sudan Volker Perthes told the UN Security Council.

Perthes was speaking just hours before a one-week ceasefire was to begin between the two factions. He said that there were already signs that the fighting was threatening to split Sudan along ethnic and communal lines.

Those have only grown recently, he said.

"In parts of the country, fighting between the two armies or the two armed formations has sharpened into communal tensions, or triggered conflict between communities," he said.

"Warning signs of tribal mobilisation are also reported in other parts of the country, particularly in South Kordofan," he said.

He said that after establishing a ceasefire that holds, the UN's number two priority is "preventing the escalation or ethnicisation of the conflict."

Perthes called the ceasefire, agreed on Saturday and set to begin at 9:45 pm (1945 GMT) on Monday, a "welcome development," even though fighting continued through the day on Monday.

"I continue to urge the parties to honour this agreement which they signed two days ago. They must stop the fighting. They must allow access for humanitarian relief, protect humanitarian workers and assets," he said.

The United States and Saudi Arabia on Sunday announced that the ceasefire agreed between the rival camps would take effect at 9:45 pm (1945 GMT) Monday to enable humanitarian assistance to civilians.

Unlike truces previously announced, the US and Saudi said this one is different because it was "signed by the parties" and will be supported by a "ceasefire monitoring mechanism".

Desperate residents voiced hope that the new agreement would stem the brutal warfare that has shaken the capital Khartoum and other parts of the impoverished country, particularly the western Darfur region.

Fighting erupted on April 15 between the army, led by Sudan's de facto leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces commanded by Burhan's former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

Sudan conflict can turn ethnic, warns UN

About 843,000 are displaced internally and 250,000 have fled across Sudan's borders since fighting broke out a month ago. More than 1 million people have been displaced by five weeks of fighting in Sudan, including a quarter of a million refugees, according to the United Nations refugee agency.

In a statement, the United States and Saudi Arabia said that the ceasefire would take effect at 9.45 pm Khartoum time (1945 GMT) on Monday (May 22). The statement added that representatives from both army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy-turned-rival Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo vowed not to seek any military advantage before the truce goes into effect. The ceasefire "shall remain in effect for seven days and may be extended with the agreement of both parties," the statement added. Since the beginning of the fighting on April 15, numerous ceasefire violations have been reported. Saturday's agreement would be enforced by US-Saudi and international-supported monitoring mechanism. Qatar's embassy was the latest diplomatic mission to be attacked. Condemning the incident, Doha said, "The embassy staff had previously been evacuated and... none of the diplomats or embassy staff were subjected to any harm," and renewed calls for an immediate end to the fighting. Sudan conflict: Warring factions agree for 7-day ceasefire from May 22

The embassies of Kuwait and Jordan were reportedly attacked in Sudan over Monday and Tuesday, as the fighting between the Sudanese Army and Paramilitary forces continued a month after the start of the tensions.

The embassies of Kuwait and Jordan were reportedly attacked in Sudan over Monday and Tuesday, as the fighting between the Sudanese Army and Paramilitary forces continued a month after the start of the tensions. On Tuesday, Kuwait's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed regret over the raid of the residence of the Kuwaiti embassy's military office and the Jordanian embassy's military office in Khartoum. “Kuwait condemns the attack on the residence of the head of the military office and [condemns] all forms of violence and sabotage,” the ministry said in a statement. “The attack is a flagrant violation of international law and the Vienna Convention [on Diplomatic Relations],” it said. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, which has been mediating talks between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Jeddah also condemned the attack and said it was closely monitoring the incidents. The Saudi foreign ministry released a statement saying it regretted the attacks and called upon all parties involved to resort to calm and adhere to the outcomes achieved in Jeddah. Around 200,000 people have fled Sudan till now, says UN

Sudan's warring factions early on Friday committed to protect civilians and the movement of humanitarian aid, but did not agree to a ceasefire and remained far apart, US officials said.

Sudan's rival forces agree to protect civilians, no deal on ceasefire

Sudan’s warring sides, early Friday (May 12) signed an agreement and committed to protecting civilians and the movement of humanitarian aid, however, have not yet agreed to a ceasefire, said the United States officials. This comes nearly a week after US-Saudi Arabia brokered talks between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary faction Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began in Jeddah.

What have the two sides agreed to do?

A report by the news agency AFP, citing a US official involved in what has been dubbed as “pre-negotiation talks”, said that the two sides have signed the agreement on a “declaration of commitment to protect the civilians of Sudan”.

“We affirm our commitment to ensuring the protection of civilians at all times, including by allowing safe passage for civilians to leave areas of active hostilities on a voluntary basis in the direction of their choice,” the declaration stated. The two sides also signed a declaration that they would work towards a short-term ceasefire in further talks, reported Reuters.

The agreement in question largely implies that both sides will let in humanitarian assistance, to allow the restoration of electricity, water and other basic services. Furthermore, the two sides will also withdraw security forces from hospitals and arrange for “respectful burial” of the dead.

“The two sides are quite far apart,” a US State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters. The official also said that the negotiators are working with Saudi and US mediators and set a goal of reaching a ceasefire deal in up to 10 days.

“This is not a ceasefire. This is an affirmation of their obligations under international humanitarian law, particularly with regard to the treatment of civilians and the need to create space for humanitarians to operate,” the US official told AFP.

She added, “We are hopeful, cautiously, that their willingness to sign this document will create some momentum that will force them to create the space,” to bring in relief supplies. Hundreds of people have been killed due to the conflict which suddenly began on April 15 and has triggered a humanitarian crisis.

The two sides have been fighting for nearly a month and as of Thursday, the fighting has rocked Halfaya, an entry point to the capital city of Khartoum. Meanwhile, the residents, as per Reuters, also heard warplanes circling over Khartoum and its adjoining cities of Bahri and Omdurman. However, the fighting reportedly seemed calmer than the previous day.

According to the World Health Organization, over 600 people have been killed and more than 5,000 injured in the fighting. The country’s Health Ministry said at least 450 people were killed in the western Darfur region alone. This comes as many UN agencies and NGOs announced temporary suspensions of their work in Khartoum and Darfur due to the intense fighting.

Sudan’s warring sides agree to protect civilians, ceasefire talks to continue

As the two warring factions in Sudan began, United States-Saudi Arabia brokered truce talks in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah over the weekend, the Sudanese capital, on Monday (May 8) continued to witness air strikes.

There has been no official word on the talks that began on Saturday between the Sudanese army and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This comes as both sides have broken several ceasefires since the conflict began last month.

What is happening in Jeddah?

Army chief Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, on Monday, said that the army is looking for a peaceful solution but that there could be discussions about a lasting settlement. However, it is only possible “after we reach a permanent ceasefire in Khartoum.”

He added, “We believe the peaceful solution is the ideal route to handle this crisis,” as quoted by Reuters. This comes as the two sides are holding discussions in Jeddah over a ceasefire and humanitarian issues like safe passage. The US-Saudi Arabia brokered talks have also been dubbed as the “pre-negotiation talks” by the two countries.

A Saudi diplomat source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that both sides consider themselves “capable of winning the battle”. As of Monday, the source also told the news agency that the discussions had yielded “no major progress,” adding that a “permanent ceasefire isn’t on the table”.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry said that they are pushing to expand negotiations and reach a “permanent cessation of hostilities”. The talks in Jeddah, which are “set to continue
“in the following days”, aim to reach “an effective short-term halt” to the hostilities while also facilitating aid delivery and restoring basic services.

Air strikes continue across Khartoum

Media reports, on Monday, indicate that sound of air strikes and clashes echoed anew across the capital city. A southern Khartoum resident told AFP that their family could hear “the sound of airstrikes which appeared to come from near a market in central Khartoum”.

According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, so far, over 750 people have been killed while more than 5,000 have been injured, across Sudan amid the ongoing fighting. Meanwhile, the United Nations said, almost 200 people have been killed in West Darfur state over the past two weeks. There was also an incident of “large-scale” looting at the World Food Programme in Khartoum over the weekend, said a UN spokesperson, on Monday.

The ongoing fighting has already displaced 335,000 people and created in excess of 120,000 refugees who have fled north into Egypt, west to Chad, and to South Sudan. This comes as the UN has raised multiple warnings over the widening humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

Sudanese people rely on talks in Jeddah

“It's very dangerous everywhere,” said Rawaa Hamad, who escaped from Port Sudan to Qatar on Monday. She added that in Sudan, people are witnessing “a lack of everything – a lack of water, lack of fuel, lack of medicine, lack of even hospitals and doctors,” reported AFP.

A 35-year-old government employee in Bahri, Tamader Ibrahim, told Reuters, “If the Jeddah negotiations fail to stop the war this would mean that we won't be able to return to our homes and our lives. We’re waiting on these negotiations because they're our only hope.”

Air strikes continue in Sudan with ‘no major progress’ in truce talks

While the war in Sudan continues to alternate between bloodshed and ceasefires, the misery of the Sudanese people remains constant. The United Nations has warned that the Sudanese humanitarian crisis could be a factor to destabilise entire region.

Direct talks between the warring Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces will start in Jeddah on Saturday, the US and Saudi governments have confirmed, even as fighting showed little signs of abating in the Sudanese capital.

The Sudanese army, late Friday (May 5), said that it sent envoys to Saudi Arabia to discuss “details of the truce in the process of being extended” with its rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as quoted by news agency AFP. This comes after multiple ceasefires have been agreed on since the fighting began, last month, all of which were broken quickly.

Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan had previously backed a seven-day ceasefire announced by South Sudan on Wednesday, but early on Friday, the paramilitary RSF said they were extending by three days a previous truce brokered under the United States-Saudi mediation.

The announcement by the Sudanese Army was later confirmed by the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken who in a statement wrote, "The US and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia welcome the start of pre-negotiation talks between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Jeddah."

He added, "I thank KSA for hosting. We urge the parties to engage in these talks seriously as a path toward ending the conflict."

In a joint statement, the US and Saudi governments confirmed direct talks between the warring sides which would begin in Jeddah on Saturday and said, "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States urge both parties to take in consideration the interests of the Sudanese nation and its people and actively engage in the talks toward a ceasefire and end to the conflict."

However, it is unclear whether the warring forces would abide by the truce as similar ceasefire announcements have failed to yield any results in the past. As this also comes days after, South Sudan’s foreign ministry, in a statement, said that both sides would send representatives for peace talks “to be held at an agreed venue of their choice”, reports CNN.

UN’s warning about food insecurity in Sudan

The United Nations has reiterated its warning about the ongoing conflict affecting the people in Sudan and said hunger and malnutrition could affect as many as 19 million people in the coming months, said a spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres citing data from the World Food Program.

According to estimates by the WFP, “the number of acutely food insecure people in Sudan will increase by between two and 2.5 million people. That raises the number to a total of 19 million people in the next three to six months if the current conflict continues,” said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the UN chief.

Hazel De Wet, deputy director of the Office of Emergency Programmes, UNICEF told Reuters, on Friday, in an email that more than one million polio vaccines intended for children have been destroyed as a result of looting in Sudan.

“A number of cold chain facilities have been looted, damaged and destroyed, including over a million polio vaccines in South Darfur,” wrote De Wet, as quoted by Reuters.

Separately, UNICEF also warned that “the situation in Sudan has become fatal for a frighteningly large number of children”. James Elder, spokesperson for the agency, citing data which was not yet independently verified by the UN said, 190 children were killed and 1,700 wounded during the first 11 days of the conflict.

Human rights council to hold special session

The UN Human Rights Council, also announced that it would hold a special session on conflict-torn Sudan on May 11, “to address the human rights impact of the ongoing conflict”. The gathering is set to take place in Geneva following a request submitted Friday by the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway and the United States, which 52 countries have so far supported.

Sudanese army, RSF to meet in Saudi Arabia for ceasefire talks; UN warns of ‘acute’ food insecurity

Nearly a fortnight after launching ‘Operation Kaveri’ to bring back stranded citizens from the conflict-ridden country of Sudan, the Indian government on Friday wrapped up the evacuation programme.

The Indian Air Force C130 flight brought the final batch of 47 passengers home which culminated the highly laborious and dangerous operation. In total, 3,862 people were moved out of Sudan, informed External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Twitter.

"An Indian Air Force C130 J flight carrying 47 passengers has landed in India. With this arrival, 3862 persons have been moved out of Sudan through #OperationKaveri," said Jaishankar.

The EAM also appreciated the countries that helped New Delhi evacuate its citizens safely.

"From Jeddah, airforce and commercial flights have brought people home. We are grateful to Saudi Arabia for hosting them and facilitating this process. Also appreciate the support of Chad, Egypt, France, South Sudan, UAE, UK, USA and UN," he added.

The Indian Air Force chauffeured 17 flights from Sudan while five Indian Navy ships were also involved in the evacuation process.

Jaishankar lauded Union Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan, who was present in Saudi Arabia to oversee the rescue efforts. Muraleedharan's presence on the ground was a source of strength and reassurance, he said.

IAF pulls off 24hr non-stop rescue mission; flies 9600 km to rescue 192 from conflict-stricken Sudan

British people trapped in Sudan have said they are being forced to make hard choices about whether to fly home without their family members the United Kingdom (UK) government would not allow on flights. This news comes as the government ended its evacuation efforts from the conflict-torn country, after extracting over 2,450 people on dozens of flights.

According to a report by The Guardian on Thursday (May 4), a growing number of British citizens and their children, or Sudanese citizens with British children, have decided to stay in Sudan as their family members have not been allowed to board evacuation flights.

Speaking to The Guardian, Suleiman, a British national, said that a UK government official called him to say that he could be evacuated with his two children only if he left his pregnant wife behind. His children are British nationals, but their mother is a Sudanese citizen.

“He said: ‘I’m sorry, you’re going to fly with your children, but your wife cannot.’ When I told him that’s impossible, the children are dependent on their mother and I can’t leave my wife who has a high-risk pregnancy, he just refused and said that’s all I can do,” Suleiman said, as quoted by The Guardian.

Suleiman decided to remain in Sudan with his children and wife, fearing that the journey to Port Sudan might endanger his wife.

Another British citizen- Roza Mohamed, said how her Sudanese sister Amina, and her three-year-old niece Samrin, were prevented from boarding an evacuation flight out of Port Sudan as Amina lacked a UK visa and was not able to prove Samrin's British citizenship obtained via her father.

The report also pointed out that in some cases, British officials gave the parents of young children visas and allowed them to board. But in others, they turned them away and it is not yet clear why these cases were treated differently.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) has been criticised for handling evacuations from Sudan. The report also said that after a week of pressure from the British Medical Association, Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly permitted many NHS doctors and their dependents stranded in Sudan to board evacuation flights from an airstrip north of Khartoum and an additional flight from Port Sudan.

British people trapped in conflict-torn Sudan say relatives not allowed on flights: Report

The United Nations said on Thursday (May 4) that it was preparing for an exodus of 860,000 people from conflict-torn Sudan. UN said that $445 million would be needed to support these people just through October.

The agency said in a statement that it had appealed to donor countries. It said that incoming funds will be utilised for people fleeing to Chad, South Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia and the Central African Republic. People are escaping Sudan after violence erupted in the country on April 15.

Fighting in Sudan continues and the truce efforts are in tatters. In the capital city of Khartoum, gunfire and explosions could be heard for the 20th straight day on Thursday. The latest ceasefire expired at midnight on Wednesday. Though the regular army said it was ready to abide by a new seven-day truce there was no immediate word from the opposing paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

AFP said that loud explosions and exchanges of fire could be heard on the streets till dawn on Thursday.

Sudan spiralled into violence on April 15 as the country's regular army, led by Sudan's de facto leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo began fighting.

According to figures from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, the fighting has killed some 700 people, most of them in Khartoum and Darfur.

"The UN was taken by surprise" by the conflict because the world body and others were hopeful that negotiations towards a civilian transition would be successful, the UN chief Antonio Guterres told reporters in Nairobi Wednesday.

"To the extent that we and many others were not expecting this to happen, we can say we failed to avoid it to happen," Guterres said.

"A country like Sudan, which has suffered so much... cannot afford a struggle for power between two people."

On the day that fighting broke out, the two generals had been due to meet with international mediators to discuss the RSF's integration into the regular army -- a key condition for the transition to democratic rule.

Instead, Khartoum awoke to the sound of gunfire ringing through the streets.

$445 million required by October to help 860,000 people fleeing Sudan: UN

Sudan's warring military factions agreed to a new and longer seven-day ceasefire from May 4, neighbour and mediator South Sudan said, even as more air strikes and shooting in the Khartoum capital region undercut their latest supposed truce.

Sudan's warring Generals extend theoretical truce but keep fighting

Sudan’s two warring forces — The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) — have announced a seven-day ceasefire even as mass exodus continued and death toll breached the 500-mark.

In a statement on Tuesday, South Sudan’s foreign ministry said that both sides would send representatives for peace talks “to be held at an agreed venue of their choice”, reports CNN.

However, it is unclear whether the warring forces would abide by the truce as similar ceasefire announcements have failed to yield any results in the past.

Moreover, the SAF and RSF are yet to respond to the South Sudan ministry’s statement through their official channels.

The latest announcement comes after the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR) warned that more than 800,000 people may flee to neighboring countries, as the ongoing violence stifles evacuation convoys from key ports in Sudan.

According to estimates, 73,000 refugees — mostly women and children — have already fled Sudan to neighboring countries like Chad, Egypt, South Sudan and the Central African Republic, amidst fears of regional instability.

United Nations estimates over 800,000 could flee Sudan if fighting continues

Concerns over shortages of food, water, and medical supplies, have triggered the mass exodus. The fighting has also rendered all hospitals useless, as many of them are not operational, or in some way damaged.

According to reports, the fuel crisis has paved the way for black market trade, forcing many people to abandon their vehicles and trudge on foot to escape.

World Health Organization (WHO) regional director Ahmed al-Mandhari said that health facilities have come under attack in Khartoum, and some are even being used as military bases.

"Up to now there were around 26 reported attacks on healthcare facilities. Some of these attacks resulted in the death of healthcare workers and civilians in these hospitals," he told the BBC.

The ongoing armed conflict between two generals — General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Chief General Mohamed Hamdan Dagaloof of the paramilitary group RSF — began on April 15.

The conflict has already crossed into the third week, and since it started, has resulted in the death of at least 528 people. As per estimates by the Sudanese health ministry, an additional 4,599 have been injured in the fighting.

Sudan’s warring army and paramilitary force agree to seven-day truce, says South Sudan

The Sudan crisis continues to escalate and considering the current security situation in the African country, India has temporarily relocated its embassy from the violence-hit capital city of Khartoum to Port Sudan.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday: "In view of the prevailing security situation in Sudan, including attacks in Khartoum city, it has been decided that the Indian Embassy in Khartoum will be temporarily relocated to Port Sudan."

"The situation will be assessed in the light of further developments," the MEA further added. Port Sudan is a port city on the Red Sea in eastern Sudan and is located at a distance of around 850 kilometres from Khartoum.

The embassy was shifted after news agency Reuters reported that India's embassy in Khartoum was stormed and looted, Sudan's army said in a statement, citing a report from the ambassador. But the incident hasn't been conformed by India yet.

The report further added that Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry said early on Wednesday that its building in Khartoum that houses its cultural mission was similarly vandalised and looted by an armed group.

The ongoing fighting in Sudan has displaced hundreds of thousands of people within the country, and a high number of Sudanese have crossed the borders and entered neighbouring nations. As per a United Nations estimate released on Tuesday, the fighting has caused more than 330,000 people to flee their homes within the country, and over 100,000 people have crossed into neighbouring countries. The numbers are only expected to rise.

As the conflict between Sudan's army and paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues, the UN's refugee agency the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) estimates that a total of 800,000 people could potentially flee to neighbouring nations, reports AFP.

Briefing the press in Geneva, UNHCR spokesperson Olga Sarrado said that "over 100,000 refugees are estimated to be among those who have now fled Sudan to neighbouring countries, including Sudanese refugees, South Sudanese returning home prematurely, and others who were themselves refugees in Sudan."

The number of internally displaced people as per the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) stands at an estimated 334,000. As per a situation report released by the agency: "the total estimate of displaced individuals across Sudan has reached 334,053".

IOM spokesperson Paul Dillon, as per Reuters, revealed that the number of people displaced in the last two weeks has exceeded "all conflict-related displacement in Sudan in 2022."

"About 72 per cent, roughly 240,000 of these new internal displacements were reported in West and South Darfur alone," he told reporters.

"In many cases, the small convoys are in a sense running the gauntlet between warring factions and it's an extremely difficult and dangerous situation for those who are embarking on these journeys," said Dillon.

The UN also stated that its 2023 aid appeals for Sudan have fallen short by around $1.5 billion and were only 14 per cent funded. "The $1.75 billion joint appeal for Sudan in 2023 is only 14 per cent funded. In other words ... (it is) facing a funding gap of $1.5 billion," said the UN humanitarian agency's spokesperson Jens Laerke.

The ongoing armed conflict between two generals — General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Chief General Mohamed Hamdan Dagaloofof the paramilitary group RSF — began on April 15th. It has already crossed into the third week, and since it started, the conflict has resulted in the death of at least 528 people. As per estimates by the Sudanese health ministry, an additional 4,599 have been injured in the fighting.

Sudan: 100,000 refugees have fled into neighbouring countries, number could rise to 800,000 - UN

The civil war in Sudan has brought life to a standstill. While the focus of the foreign media has been on diplomats and foreign nationals who got caught in the violence that suddenly exploded in this head-butting contest between the two generals, few have focused their attention on the common people of Sudan. Remember, civil wars, ethnic conflicts and social strife is not new to the people of Sudan. But even then, this is a conflict like no other that has gripped the country in the last few decades. Be it in the ethnic violence of Darfur, or Blue Nile and the Southern Kardofan crisis.
