Warplanes on bombing raids drew heavy anti-aircraft fire over Khartoum on Saturday as fierce fighting between Sudan's army and paramilitaries entered a third week, violating a renewed truce.

Sudan violence enters third week, UN says country "Falling apart"

The first flight of the Red Cross carrying humanitarian aid landed in Sudan on Sunday, where deadly clashes between forces of rival generals continued for the third week.

"The eight tonnes of humanitarian cargo includes surgical material to support Sudanese hospitals and volunteers from the Sudan Red Crescent Society," said the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

On April 15, the fighting started between forces which are loyal to two rival generals, leaving around 500 dead and thousands wounded while displacing tens of thousands from their homes.

Since the conflict started, dead bodies have remained on the capital's streets and the ICRC's Africa regional director Patrick Youssef, while speaking to journalists from the Sudanese Red Crescent, said that they are "trying to get to the bodies in the streets".

Around 16 per cent of hospitals are completely functioning in the capital city of Khartoum, as per the report of the World Health Organisation, after many facilities were shelled in the ongoing fighting.

The shipment left Amman, the capital of Jordan, and arrived in the eastern city of Port Sudan which was called by Youssef as the only entry point currently available for aid to reach Sudan.

He stated that the medical kits present on the plane were "enough to stabilise 1,500 patients", adding that the ICRC was aiming for security guarantees to further send aid to Darfur and Khartoum.

The regional director stated that some aid was delivered by them to Darfur at the beginning, but "it was not enough, and we could not get anything to Khartoum".

Meanwhile, Sudan's former prime minister Abdalla Hamdok on Saturday warned that the conflict could turn into one of the worst civil wars in the world.

"God forbid if Sudan is to reach a point of civil war proper...Syria, Yemen, Libya will be a small play," said Hamdok speaking at an event in Nairobi. "I think it would be a nightmare for the world,” he added.

The United States' first coordinated efforts to evacuate its private citizens from Sudan took place on Friday when a convoy of buses carrying approximately 300 Americans departed the war-torn capital of Khartoum and began a 525-mile journey to the Red Sea.

Armed American drones flew high above the convoy, keeping a close eye out for potential threats. After securing security guarantees from the enemies, the United Nations and numerous other countries have also evacuated their citizens overland, reported The New York Times.

It raised new concerns about why the United States had taken so long to plan a civilian evacuation from Sudan, which was home to approximately 16,000 Americans, many of whom were dual nationals, when Western and Persian Gulf allies had moved faster and evacuated many more people.

Starting Tuesday, Britain has evacuated 1,573 people, the majority of whom are British citizens, from an airfield north of Khartoum. Another 1,700 people were airlifted out of harm's way by Germany and France. According to Saudi authorities, at least 3,000 more people from various nations were evacuated by boat from Port Sudan to Jeddah.

Other nations are already reducing their evacuation efforts as the U.S. steps up its own. Due to a "significant decline" in demand for seats, Britain announced on Friday that it would stop operating its airlift at 6 pm on Saturday.

The disparity could be a result of the American government taking a more cautious approach to airlifting civilians out of an unpredictably chaotic conflict zone with no clearly defined front lines. This concern appeared to be partially justified on Friday when Turkey reported that one of its military aircraft had come under fire as it landed at the airfield on the edge of Khartoum.

Other Americans have made it to the border on their own by road, crossing into Egypt and Ethiopia, joining tens of thousands of Sudanese who have made the same journey. The United States has assisted American citizens in getting seats on flights out of Khartoum organised by allied nations, and occasionally on convoys going through Khartoum to the airfield.

US begins evacuation of American citizens from war-torn Sudan

On the intervening night of 27th and 28th of April, the Indian air force landed its c-130j plane on an airstrip in Wadi Sayyidna, about 40 kilometres north of Khartoum. The airstrip was in a degraded condition, with no navigational approach aids or fuel. The small runway also lacked landing lights that are needed to guide incoming aircraft at night. Despite all the challenges, the Indian air force managed to land and rescue as many as 121 people. While approaching, the aircrew used electro-optical infrared sensors to ensure the runway was free from obstructions. After ensuring there were no inimical forces in the vicinity, the Indian air force pilots used night vision goggles to carry out a flawless landing. Upon landing, the aircraft engines were kept running, while eight commandos secured the passengers and their luggage. As with the landing, the take-off from the unlit runway was also carried out using night vision goggles.

Braving all odds, including a bad airstrip and poor night vision, Indian Air Force personnel on the intervening night of 27 April and 28, rescued 121 people from Wadi Sayyidna in Sudan in an IAF C-130J heavy-lift aircraft.

The airstrip is about 40 km north of the violently tumultuous Sudanese capital of Khartoum.

The surface of the airstrip had deteriorated. There was no fuel or navigational help, and most importantly, there were no landing lights, which are necessary to guide an aircraft landing at night. But brave IAF personnel made use of NVGs, or night vision goggles, to successfully land at the airstrip and rescued the people.

A pregnant lady was among those who did not have transportation to Port Sudan, the main transit hub from which the Indian government is rescuing its residents using military aircraft and navy ships. All were safely rescued.

“Approaching the airstrip, the aircrew used their Electro-Optical/Infra-Red sensors to ensure that the runway was free from any obstructions and no inimical forces were in the vicinity. Having made sure of the same, the aircrew carried out a tactical approach on Night Vision Goggles, on a practically dark night,” the IAF reportedly said.

“Upon landing, the aircraft engines were kept running while eight IAF Garud Commandos secured the passengers and their luggage into the aircraft. As with the landing, the take-off from the unlit runway was also carried out using NVGs. This approximately two-and-a-half-hour operation between Wadi Sayyidna and Jeddah will go down in the annals of IAF history for its sheer audacity and flawless execution — akin to that carried out in Kabul,” the IAF added.

Sudanese army, RSF agree to extend truce by 72 hours

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary rebel group, have been accused by the Sudanese military of firing at a Turkish evacuation plane on Friday (April 28).

The Turkish C-130 plane was on its way to the Wadi Seidna airfield in northern Sudan to bring back Turkish nationals from the war-torn country, according to the Sudanese military forces, when "rebels" opened fire on it. The official Sudan News Agency reported that the jet had been damaged and one crew member injured.

On Twitter, the Turkish Ministry of Defence acknowledged that its aircraft had been shot at at the airport. According to the ministry, nobody was injured.

Later, reporters were informed by Turkey's Defence Minister Hulusi Akar that two planes had been sent to Sudan for the evacuations. While the damage to the gunfire-damaged plane is being evaluated, one of them returned. No casualties were reported, and he emphasised that evacuations will go on as usual.

In a statement, the RSF denied firing shots at the Turkish evacuation plane.

“We refute these claims and categorically state that they are not based on any factual evidence,” it read.

What is happening in Sudan?

The RSF and the armed forces have been engaged in a battle in Sudan for almost two weeks now. The conflict has continued despite several attempts at a ceasefire. A military-RSF ceasefire that was supposed to terminate on Thursday was prolonged for a further 72 hours. Since April 15, at least 512 people have died and 4,193 have been injured in fighting, according to the Sudanese health ministry.

Despite the ceasefire, fighting went on in the southern Sudanese region of Darfur, and on Thursday, RSF positions in Khartoum were attacked by Sudanese fighter jets.

Evacuation attempts

Turkey has been attempting to mediate between the warring parties in Sudan, as have other nations in the area. Last week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attempted to reach out to both sides.

For days, Turkey and a number of other Middle Eastern and European nations have been demanding that their citizens leave Sudan. The US swiftly evacuated its diplomats, but it has not yet launched a significant effort to evacuate its citizens. Al-Monitor reported on Thursday that according to the US State Department, an overland evacuation of US citizens was planned.

During the interview, he was joined by General Abdullah, the commander and the chief of the King Abdullah air base where Indians are being brought, and explained, "It is our duty towards our friends. I hope we did the right thing."

Here's the full interview:

WION: If you can detail the evacuation efforts of the Indian government?
V Muraleedharan: I am here in Jeddah, King Abdullah air base where the C130 Flight from port Sudan has landed. You can see my background, the Indians from Karnataka who have come from port Sudan. They have reached here and after immigration and they will be accommodated in a transit facility and take them back to India.

WION: The challenges faced by you in the evacuation efforts?
V Muraleedharan: This evacuation that is happening. I will term it as happening in four stages. The first stage is bringing all those who are in the conflict zones to comparatively safer zones in Khartoum. Then the road travels which amounts to around 800 kilometres from Khartoum to Port Sudan. And from there, both the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy are involved. Indian Air Force has deployed 2 C130 planes, as well as Indian Navy's INS Sumedha and INS Teg. They have done one trip each and we have INS Tarkesh also. So this is the facility that we are utilizing to bring the Indians from the Port Sudan to Jeddah. In Jeddah, we have a control room functioning for almost a week where the transit facility is here. All the Indian air force planes are landing at the King Abdullah air base of the Saudi Royal Air Force. Here all the arrangements are being done by the Saudi authorities for immigration, for even refreshments. From here they are being taken to the transit facility. So the most crucial part is the almost 800-kilometer journey from Khartoum to Port Sudan where without any problems, and issues they need to be brought in by road. We have been successful, till now 1250 Indians have reached Jeddah. Maybe tomorrow we'll be able to transport the rest of those who are in the transit facility.

WION: If you can give details of the Indian nationals who are still in Sudan? How many Indians are still in Sudan that need to be evacuated?
V Muraleedharan: As per our estimate, the number of Indians who have either registered with the Indian embassy or the Indian Embassy is in touch with them. The number amounts to around 3400 of which now, almost 1250 have reached Jeddah. Rest of them, I would say are either in Port Sudan or are on there way from Khartoum to port Sudan. Of course, that number altogether would be around 2000. The rest of them, effort is on to bring them also back to Port Sudan, to Jeddah and then India.

WION: So when it comes to all the coordination efforts with foreign countries, if you can give details, role of the Saudi government?
V Muraleedharan: Saudi Arabia is extremely helpful, supportive. I have with me General Abdullah, the commander and the chief of the King Abdullah air base here. He has personally been with us during the last three days and nights. The whole night we had to stay awake. He was with us throughout, extending all assistance. And I would say that the India-Saudi partnership during this period of evacuation is on full display. The Saudi authorities have been extending all help and support to the Indians who are coming over to provide all the facilities here in the King Abdullah airbase and the External Affairs Minister has personally thanked the Saudi authorities, the Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia for the assistance and support that they have been providing in this evacuation.

General Abdullah: It is our duty towards our friends. I hope we did the right thing. What you need for your people. All we have done is done by the order of our king, the crown prince and also the directions of our commander. We are happy to do it, a duty for our brothers. Inshallaha, hope this crisis will finish and this operation will be successful. Anything you want, most welcome for everybody, and all capabilities we have are for you.

WION: What is the message you will send to Indians, and their families still stranded in Sudan.
V Muraleedharan: As you know, the Prime Minister has already mentioned the effort of the government of India will be to bring every Indian safe and secure back to India and we will continue the effort to bring them out of the conflict zone. Bring them back safely to India.

WION: Are you in touch with any Sudanese Generals?
V Muraleedharan: I'm focusing on the evacuation efforts. I'm in Jeddah, and that's my mandate. So I'm trying to coordinate these efforts with the Indian authorities, with the Indian Embassy here as well as in Khartoum, as well as the Saudi authorities here the Foreign Ministry of Saudi, the Air Force, the Air Force Base, which is here. So the rest of the things I think we will discuss later.

Exclusive: 1250 Indians evacuated to Jeddah from Sudan, Minister V Muraleedharan to WION

Sudan's doctor union said on Friday (April 28) that at least 74 people were killed in the two days of fighting in West Darfur's capital city El Geneina. According to a report by the news agency AFP, the union said these deaths were on Monday and Tuesday.

The union also said that it was still unable to confirm the number of people killed during the rest of the week amid the ongoing clashes. Further details are awaited.

Intense fighting has been reported in Darfur. The Darfur Bar Association said on Friday that fighters were launching rockets at houses in El Geneina. The association said the fighting has spread to nearly the entire city and the fighters looted camps for the displaced and the university hospital, and to markets, public buildings, aid warehouses and banks.

The association further urged to immediately stop this "foolish war" that was being waged on the backs of civilians across Sudan. Earlier the United Nations (UN) said it had reports of the distribution of weapons among local communities in El Geneina.

The conflict in Sudan has been raging despite the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) agreeing to extend the ceasefire for three more days.

The army is led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan while General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo is the leader of the RSF.

On Friday, Sudan's army said that the RSF shot at a Turkish evacuation aircraft as it was landing at the Wadi Seyidna airport outside Khartoum. Turkey's defence ministry confirmed that an evacuation aircraft was fired at and said there were no injuries. The aircraft's fuel system was damaged with the Sudanese army saying it was being repaired.

The RSF, meanwhile, denied firing and accused the army of spreading lies.

"Our forces have remained strictly committed to the humanitarian truce that we agreed upon since midnight, and it is not true that we targeted any aircraft in the sky of Wadi Seyidna in Omdurman," the RSF said in a statement.
