The job was simple: drive his truck from war-torn Khartoum to Al-Jazira state south of Sudan's capital. Othman Hassan was grateful for the work, until he came to a paramilitary checkpoint.

"They confiscated my truck and took me to a house in Kafouri" in Khartoum North, the 54-year-old told AFP.

In the courtyard, he found "several other prisoners and paramilitary soldiers from the Rapid Support Forces, who forced us to the ground and whipped us, accusing us of spying for the army" which has been battling the RSF since April 15.

They were whipped until one man, whom Hassan judged to be the commander, ordered them to stop. And then the "interrogation" began.

For three days in that house, and then for two weeks at the local power station, Hassan and six others were left on the ground, routinely beaten and deprived of food and water.

They are not alone in suffering such treatment.

In the chaos of a war that has killed thousands and displaced millions, egregious abuses have taken place in detention centres run by both sides.

Dozens of detention centres

Of the dozens scattered across the war-ravaged capital, 44 belong to the RSF and eight to the army, according to a report by a committee of pro-democracy lawyers that has sought to document violations in the war.

Over two months, they collected 64 testimonies, and found that both camps had committed "war crimes" and "crimes against humanity", including "murder, kidnapping, unlawful detention, forced disappearance, torture, and rape".

Hassan can attest to that. After two weeks, he was dumped by the side of the road, but never found out why he had been released.

Mohamed Salaheldin, by contrast, knows what it took to secure his freedom: his family paid a $1,700 ransom to the RSF.

He had ventured onto Khartoum's dangerous streets to get medicine for his elderly mother, when RSF fighters asked him for ID that he did not have.

"They threatened to kill me," said the 35-year-old, who was accused of being "an army spy" and "an Islamist" from the regime of former dictator Omar al-Bashir.

The RSF has repeatedly accused the army of starting the war to usher Bashir's regime back to power, although it has never been possible to verify who opened fire first.

"I sat on the ground all day, until I was moved to the sports city" in southern Khartoum, Salaheldin told AFP. He remained there for a month.

The lawyers report that indignities suffered by detainees include severe overcrowding, no access to toilets and the withholding of water in the stifling heat.

Former detainees from centres run by both sides reported "threats of rape", "repeated rape", and "one inmate being killed for resisting".

In the darkness of overcrowded rooms, the noise of war is constant, as fighter jets target RSF bases from above and street battles rage outside.

"I was hit by a stray bullet in the leg," Salaheldin told AFP from Al-Jazira, where he found refuge with his family and now awaits surgery.

In the early months of the war, 25-year-old Majdi Hussein said goodbye to his family in Khartoum.

He sent them to safety in northern Sudan, and stayed behind to guard the family home.

"On July 15 there was a knock on the door. I opened it and found six paramilitary soldiers" perched on a pick-up truck mounted with a turret, he told AFP.

Hussein was beaten, blindfolded, loaded onto their pick-up and taken to a dark, crowded cellar.

"The days went by, and I got to know the other detainees," he recounted.

Forced to dig graves

The army and the RSF have denied any ill-treatment of those they have captured, stating repeatedly that their troops act in accordance with humanitarian standards.

On Monday, the army said it had "contacted the International Committee of the Red Cross" to "hand over thirty under-aged members" of the RSF captured at "the start of the war".

The ICRC has regularly facilitated the release of detainees from both sides.

But also on both sides, the lawyers' committee found that civilians and combatants, men and women, adults and minors had all suffered through "interrogation by means of horrific torture including being suspended by the feet, electrocution and cigarette burns".

Some detainees were also forced to "do hard labour and dig mass graves", the report found.

On September 2, three doctors were kidnapped by the RSF while on their way to volunteer in eastern Khartoum, according to a local resistance committee -- one of many that used to organise pro-democracy protests and now provides aid to those in the line of fire.

"They have neither eaten nor drunk anything, nor have they been questioned," the committee said, calling on the RSF to free them.

But months after passers-by, activists and medics began disappearing and just as suddenly reappearing, civilians have come to know there is little rhyme or reason over who gets released and when.

For Majdi Hussein it took 10 days, after which "they took me to Avenue 60 (in Khartoum) and told me to get out" without putting him on trial, providing an explanation or saying another word.

The United Nations on Friday (August 25) expressed concerns about the ongoing conflict in Sudan and warned that a lasting war could tie up the entire region into a humanitarian catastrophe. In a statement, Martin Griffiths, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator at the UN, said, "This viral conflict and the hunger, disease and displacement left in its wake now threatens to consume the entire country." Griffiths highlighted specific concerns about the safety of civilians in the country's breadbasket Gezira State. "Hundreds of thousands of children are severely malnourished and at imminent risk of death if left untreated," he added. The conflict between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has been going on for more than four months now. Nearly 5,000 people have been killed and millions have been forced to flee their homes. Paramilitary fights army for fourth straight day On Wednesday, the RSF fought the army for a fourth straight day, for the control of a key armoured corps base in Khartoum's south. The RSF began its assault last Sunday, on the vast strategic on several fronts. Residents of Al-Shajara, the neighbourhood where the base is situated, reported "large losses on both sides" on the first day of the attack. Sudan's army chief seen outside HQ Army Chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan was seen outside his headquarters on Thursday for the first time since fighting started. According to a report by the news agency AFP, footage showed Burhan speaking to soldiers, with the caption indicating that he was at the Wadi Seidna air base north of Khartoum. In other images, the army chief was seen surrounded by civilians in the capital's twin-city of Omdurman, where residents also reported fighting on Thursday. Sudanese human rights organisations have evidence that the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has put more than 5,000 people in detention and tortured many, Reuters reported. The detained people in the capital were reportedly kept in inhuman conditions.

For the last three months, fighting has raged between Sudan's army and the RSF. The army has air superiority but the RSF fighters are holed up in cities, including the capital Khartoum. Sudan's army has not been able to capitalise on the air superiority it has.

About detainment and torture, RSF said the reports were incorrect, Reuters said. RSF reportedly said that it only had prisoners of war and they were well-treated.

"These organisations are ignoring violations by the army against civilians, including air and artillery strikes, detentions, and arming of civilians," a representative for the force said, as quoted by Reuters.

Among those detained in several locations across Khartoum were combatants, but also 3,500 civilians, including vulnerable women and foreign nationals, said the organisations, who asked to have their names withheld for fear of retribution.

Human rights groups said that they would present to the United Nations documentation of cases of death by torture, as well as "degrading, inhumane conditions of detention devoid of human dignity and the most basic necessities of life."

On Thursday, the UN human rights office said that at least 87 people were buried in a mass grave in the Darfur city of El Geneina. The UN has accused the RSF and the allied militias of the killings, which the paramilitary force denied.

The International Criminal Court said on Thursday that it would investigate killing across the region. There was no immediate comment forthcoming from the RSF.

The UN statement said that local people were forced to dispose of the bodies which included those of women and children in an open area which was close to the town of western El-Geneina between June 20-21.

"I condemn in the strongest terms the killing of civilians and hors de combat individuals, and I am further appalled by the callous and disrespectful way the dead, along with their families and communities, were treated," said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk in the same statement.

Sudan's RSF detained 5,000, tortured some: Human rights groups

Media reports citing anonymous sources, on Saturday (July 15) said that Sudanese army representatives returned to Saudi Arabia’s port city of Jeddah to resume talks with their paramilitary foes Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This comes as the conflict between the two warring sides entered its fourth month.

What do we know about the reported meeting?

“A delegation of the armed forces has returned to Jeddah to resume negotiations with Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rebels,” a source told AFP on condition of anonymity. Meanwhile, neither RSF nor the Sudanese army have officially spoken about returning to Saudi Arabia for talks.

The reported meeting comes after previous talks mediated by Saudi Arabia and the United States were suspended last month after numerous ceasefire violations. The talks have also not been confirmed by Washington or Riyadh.

The reports emerge after Egypt on Thursday launched its bid to halt the fighting between Sudan’s warring factions which began on April 15. The attempt was made during a summit of neighbouring states where leaders of seven nations around Sudan, in a joint statement called on the warring parties to commit to a ceasefire.

The power struggle in Sudan has raised concerns about regional stability as the seven countries also warned of the conflict-torn country’s “descent into chaos that could lead to the spread of terrorism and organised crime.”

Egypt’s move has been welcomed both by the Sudanese army, which has close ties to the country, as well as the RSF. Sudanese army representatives arrive in Jeddah to resume talks with RSF: Reports

The United Nations human rights office said on Thursday (July 13) that at least 87 people, which include ethnic Masalits, were buried in a mass grave in Sudan's West Darfur. The UN said that it had credible information that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were responsible.

The UN statement said that local people were forced to dispose of the bodies which included those of women and children in an open area which was close to the town of western El-Geneina between June 20-21.

The statement also said that some of the people had died from untreated injuries which were inflicted during a wave of violence by the RSF and militia allied to them. The violence had taken place following the killing of local governor Khamis Abbakar.

"I condemn in the strongest terms the killing of civilians and hors de combat individuals, and I am further appalled by the callous and disrespectful way the dead, along with their families and communities, were treated," said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk in the same statement.

Turk called for a prompt and thorough investigation.

Reuters said that it was not clear how many Masalits were among the dead. Sudan has seen rise in ethnically motivated bloodshed in recent weeks in step with war between rival military factions. The war started in April.

Fresh mediation from Egypt

Meanwhile, Egypt was attempting to freshly mediate between Sudan's warring factions by hosting a regional summit on Thursday. The effort is latest in international attempts to prevent outbreak of civil war.

In Sudan violence, more than 1000 civilians have been killed till now and 3 million people have been displaced according to figures from United Nations.

The fighting between the army and paramilitary forces broke out in April. It has since then spread westward to the fragile Darfur and Kordofan regions.

A series of ceasefires have been negotiated by the US and Saudi Arabia. But the talks have remained suspended after violations.

Egypt historically has close ties with the Sudanese army. It has invited Sudan's neighbours to the Thursday summit.

The aims of the summit are to stave off foreign interference and influence in the fighting, two Egyptian security sources said, and to ultimately launch a process to achieve a peaceful agreement to stop the fighting.

It has invited Sudan's neighbours to the Thursday summit. The aims of the summit are to stave off foreign interference and influence in the fighting, two Egyptian security sources said, and to ultimately launch a process to achieve a peaceful agreement to stop the fighting. The United Nations (UN) warned on Sunday (July 9) that Sudan was on the brink of a "full-scale civil war" which could potentially destabilise the entire region. In a statement, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' spokesperson Farhan Haq said Guterres remained deeply concerned that the ongoing war (in Sudan) between the warring factions pushed Sudan to the brink of a full-scale war. The conflict in Sudan between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has been going on since April 15. An air strike in western Omdurman last Saturday (July 8) became the latest incident to provoke an outrage between the warring factions. At least 22 people died in the air strike and dozen others were wounded. Condemning the air strike, Guterres expressed concerns over reports of renewed fighting in North Kordofan, South Kordofan and Blue Nile States, his spokesperson said on Sunday. According to a report by the news agency AFP, witnesses also reported more air strikes on Sunday near the presidential palace in Khartoum. Around 3,000 people killed in conflict so far Around 3,000 people have been killed in the conflict so far and almost 700,000 people have fled to neighbouring countries. The AFP report said that survivors have reported a wave of sexual violence and witnesses have spoken about ethnically targeted killings. The UN had earlier warned of possible crimes against humanity in the western region of Darfur. Also, the UN and African blocs warned of an "ethnic dimension" to the conflict in Darfur. US diplomat to travel to Addis Ababa to discuss Sudan conflict Molly Phee, the US assistant secretary of state for African affairs, would travel to Ethiopia's capital city Addis Ababa on Monday and Tuesday to meet with African leaders and Sudanese civilians to end the conflict, a report by the news agency Reuters said. In a statement, the US State Department called on the Sudanese Army and the RSF "to immediately end the fighting and return to the barracks; adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law and international human rights law; and allow unhindered humanitarian access to meet the emergency needs of civilians." And on Thursday, Egypt is set to host a summit of Sudan's neighbours to discuss ways to end the conflict. In a statement, Egypt's presidency said that the summit in Cairo aims to "develop effective mechanisms" with neighbouring states to settle the conflict peacefully, in coordination with other regional or international efforts. Sudan on brink of 'full-scale civil war': UN warns after air strike kills 22

A deadly airstrike in Sudan's capital city, Khartoum, has resulted in the deaths of at least 22 people and numerous injuries. The ongoing war between military factions in Sudan has entered its 12th week and poses a threat of escalating into a wider civil war.

Deadly airstrike in Sudan's capital raises concerns of escalating civil war

At least 22 people were killed and several others were injured after an airstrike on western Omdurman, said the Khartoum state health ministry, on Saturday (July 8). This comes as the fighting between the rival factions, Sudan’s army and its paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) entered its 12th week.

What do we know about the airstrike?

The airstrike which hit the Dar es Salaam district of Omdurman early Saturday, is said to be one of the deadliest since the fighting began back in mid-April. This comes after last month an airstrike killed at least 17 people, including five children in the Sudanese capital city of Khartoum.

The RSF has blamed the Sudanese army for the airstrike on Saturday and other strikes on residential areas in Omdurman. The Khartoum state health officials, in a brief statement, said that at least 22 people were killed due to the airstrike while the RSF said the death toll stood at 31. However, the number of those injured was not mentioned by either the RSF or the health ministry.

In a statement, the RSF also said that the strike had “caused significant destruction to homes”. Notably, the paramilitary, reportedly, quickly took over the Sudanese capital city Khartoum and its sister cities Omdurman and Bahri since the fighting broke out on April 15. The army has since launched air and artillery strikes, reported Reuters.

The news agency also reported overnight strikes on Friday which centred on the country’s state broadcasting complex in eastern Omdurman.

The health ministry also posted a video supposedly showing the aftermath of the airstrike which shows dead bodies on the ground with sheets covering them as people try to pull the dead from the rubble, reported the Associated Press.

Meanwhile, a BBC report citing eyewitnesses said that women and children were among the victims.

Situation in Sudan

Following the failure of multiple mediation efforts, the conflict between the warring head of the Sudanese army, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the chief of the RSF, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, drags on.

At least 1,133 people have been killed in the fighting, said the federal health ministry, as per Reuters. This comes as the violence has flared in the capital as well as Kordofan and Darfur regions, in addition to ethnic violence in West Darfur state.

Last month, Sudan's Health Minister Haitham Mohammed Ibrahim said that the clashes have killed over 3,000 people and wounded more than 6,000 others, reported AP.

Meanwhile, according to the United Nations, more than 2.9 million people have been displaced either in Sudan or crossed into neighbouring countries.

The incident on Saturday also comes a day after international aid organisation, Save the Children, in a statement, said that teenage girls are being sexually assaulted and raped by armed combatants in “alarming numbers”.

The United Nations agencies in a joint statement, last week also noted an “increase in reports of gender-based violence” across the country.

Sudan: At least 22 killed, several injured after air strike on Omdurman

Gunmen from Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have been accused of attacking a remote town on Friday (July 7). There are also allegations that the troops then went on a shooting and looting rampage. AFP has quoted witnesses who said RSF gunmen "terrorised" its people.

The RSF was "looting banks and public buildings" in Bara, a town 50 kilometres (30 miles) northeast of El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, a witness told AFP.

"We're being terrorised: they shoot and loot, and the army and police are nowhere to be seen," said another resident, Abdelmohsen Ibrahim.

"Even if the army tries to come from El-Obeid, the RSF are in control of the El-Obeid-Bara road."

El-Obeid, 350 kilometres south of Sudan's capital Khartoum, is a strategic logistical and commercial hub. It has an airport and huge warehouses for the storage of foodstuffs.

Sudan has been rattled due to fighting between the country's military and RSF since April 15. The fight has been centred on the capital Khartoum as well as North Kordofan and the vast western region of Darfur.

Many civilians have accused the RSF of carrying out acts of violence against them, while also charging that the armed forces have done little to protect them.

The army has air superiority. But it has struggled to take the advantage of it against RSF which has established bases in the residential areas.

It has been accused that RSF gunmen have been forcing civilians out of their homes, robbing them, seizing their vehicles and even raping women as they flee to neighbouring countries.

Fresh fighting was reported on Thursday in Khartoum and Darfur, including air strikes, heavy shelling and fighting on the ground.

The RSF paramilitary group traces its origins to the Janjaweed -- feared Arab militiamen who committed widespread atrocities against non-Arab ethnic minorities in Darfur starting 2003.

Sudan: Paramilitary RSF accused of terrorising, looting town

In Sudan's capital, precious books in a major library have been burned and the national museum has been cut off for weeks by fighting. In Darfur, another museum is at risk from seasonal rains after projectiles punctured the roof.

Sudan's cultural heritage in peril as fighting rages

Explosions were heard in Sudan's capital Khartoum on Monday (July 3) as the army rallied civilians to take up arms against a fresh onslaught by the country's paramilitary forces. At dawn, the sound of artillery fire shook northwest Khartoum before progressing towards the centre and east of the city, AFP reported.

The fighting "began at 4:00 am and is still going," one resident told AFP.

There were just a few hours of respite for war-torn Khartoum after heavy clashes that took place on Sunday between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

On Monday, the army said that it was ready to "receive and prepare" volunteer fighters. Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan last week urged Sudanese "youth and all those able to defend" to join the military.

RSF fighters are highly mobile and are embedded in densely populated neighbourhoods. They have been accused of widespread break-ins and looting.

Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said it had seized the main base of a heavily armed police unit on Sunday as it sought an edge in its war with the army during heavy fighting in the capital Khartoum.

The RSF in a statement said it had taken full control of the large base belonging to the Central Reserve Police southern Khartoum and posted footage of its fighters celebrating inside the facility, some removing boxes of ammunition from a warehouse.

Khartoum and El Geneina have been worst affected by the war, although last week tensions and clashes escalated in other parts of Darfur and in Kordofan, in the south.

Sudan conflict: RSF seizes police base as fighting intensifies

The United Nations, on Tuesday (June 20) said that more than 2.5 million people have been uprooted since the conflict between Sudan’s army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began. Meanwhile, Sudanese officials in Darfur have called for an international investigation amid reports of violence and civilians being killed or shot at as they have tried to escape by foot to Chad since last week.

Three-day ceasefire in Khartoum

There has been relative calm in the Sudanese capital as the 72-hour ceasefire United States-Saudi Arabia brokered deal brought some respite to the residents in Khartoum but is set to expire Wednesday morning. However, there has been a reported increase in cases of looting across the city.

A Sudanese army source told AFP, that a huge fire erupted at the intelligence headquarters in Khartoum and alleged that RSF had “bombarded the building and caused the fire”. This claim was later countered after an RSF source told the news agency that “an army drone bombed the building, where RSF fighters had gathered”.

So far, the fighting which first erupted in April has killed more than 2,000 people across Sudan, as per the data from Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project. Out of which up to 1,100 have been killed in the city of El Geneina alone which is the capital of West Darfur state, according to the US state department.

Sudanese people try to escape violence in Darfur

According to UN officials, the violence in Darfur, a region in Sudan with five provinces, has recently taken an ethnic dimension as RSF and Arab militias have reportedly been targeting non-Arab tribes in the region.

Reuters, citing witnesses, reported that assailants have targeted non-Arab residents by their skin colour. Recent reports have also said how the violence in the region’s El Geneina over the past two months has been driven by Arab nomadic tribes and the RSF.

In the past couple of weeks, residents have been fleeing the city en masse to get to the border on foot to neighbouring Chad. Speaking about the violence in El Geneina, Ibrahim, a resident who made it to the Chadian town of Adre, told Reuters how a large number of people tried to seek protection near the army headquarters in El Geneina on June 14 but were blocked.

“All of a sudden, the militias came out and sprayed people with gunfire,” Ibrahim told Reuters from Adre, which is nearly 30 km away from the Sudanese city. He added, “We got surprised by thousands of people running back. People were killed, they were trampled.”

According to AFP, dead bodies were seen across the streets of El Geneina. The international medical relief organisation Doctors Without Borders or MSF, on Monday, said some 15,000 people had fled West Darfur in the past four days.

The organisation also said that many of those arriving from across the border to Chad have reported seeing people shot and killed as they tried to escape El Geneina. At least 150,000 people have fled Darfur into Chad since the beginning of the conflict, as per the UN.

A resident from the Sudanese city told the MSF, “It was a collective decision of the people of El Geneina to leave,” adding that “Most of them fled on foot heading northeast of El Geneina but many of them were killed on this route,” as per Reuters.

What have the officials said about this violence?

Mini Arko Minawi, the governor of Darfur, called on the UN Security Council to allow the International Criminal Court to probe “crimes and assassinations” which have taken place in the region in the past two months. Earlier this month, UN envoy to Sudan, Volker Perthes, referred to reports of attacks “allegedly committed by Arab militias and some armed men” in RSF uniform.

Perthes also said that the attacks included targeted killings, rapes and other atrocities which could amount to crimes against humanity. In a video posted on Monday, Minawi said, “What is happening in Darfur now is no less than what had happened in 2003,” referring to the genocidal war that took place in the region.

According to AFP, in an audio recording Tuesday RSF commander, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, denounced the “tribal conflict” in El Geneina. He also went on to claim that he had ordered his men “not to intervene” and accused the army of “distributing weapons” to civilians.

Three-day ceasefire in Khartoum There has been relative calm in the Sudanese capital as the 72-hour ceasefire United States-Saudi Arabia brokered deal brought some respite to the residents in Khartoum but is set to expire Wednesday morning. Sudanese civilians killed, shot at as they flee Darfur; over 2.5 million uprooted, says UN

The United Nations (UN) said on Monday (June 19) that donors at a UN conference pledged close to $1.5 billion to combat the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and help its neighbouring countries host refugees fleeing the conflict.

The United Nations (UN) said on Monday (June 19) that donors at a UN conference pledged close to $1.5 billion to combat the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and help its neighbouring countries host refugees fleeing the conflict. "Today, donors have announced close to $1.5 billion for the humanitarian response to Sudan and the region," the UN's humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths said following the conference in Geneva, the news agency AFP reported. Griffiths said the ongoing crisis would require sustained financial support, and hoped that the UN could keep Sudan at the top of its priorities. UN refugees chief Filippo Grandi, meanwhile said, "It is very important these contributions be clearly allocated and disbursed as quickly as possible because we're really short of funds." Monday's conference comes amid a new three-day ceasefire between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who have been fighting since April 15. The death toll has topped 2,000, and 25 million people need aid. 'Without global support, Sudan could become...': UN chief During Monday's conference, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that without international support, Sudan could quickly become a locus of lawlessness, radiating insecurity across the region. "The scale and speed of Sudan's descent into death and destruction is unprecedented," Secretary-General Guterres added. 'Monday's donation less than half of what is needed' UN's humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths pointed out on Monday that the amount pledged was less than half of what humanitarians said was needed this year to respond to the needs. AFP reported that the UN has two appeals for combating the crisis- the humanitarian response within Sudan which requires $2.6 billion and the regional refugee response which is set at $470 million. Both these were less than 17 per cent funded going into the conference. As per the UN, the United States pledged the highest donation at $550 million, followed by Germany with $162 million and the European Commission with $151 million. Qatar pledged $50 million with Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani telling the conference that there was no military solution to the conflict, and urged the warring factions to "put the aspirations of the Sudanese people in the forefront". Sudan's warring sides, the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), agreed to a new 72-hour ceasefire from Sunday (June 18), as fighting intensified with deadly air strikes in the capital city of Khartoum and an exodus of wounded from Darfur over the border into Chad.

According to a statement from Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry, "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America announce the agreement of representatives of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a ceasefire throughout Sudan for a period of 72 hours." The ceasefire would take place from 6 am (0400 GMT), the mediators said. "The two sides agreed that during the ceasefire period, they would refrain from movements and attacks, the use of warplanes or drones, artillery bombardment, reinforcement of positions, resupply of forces, or refrain from attempting to achieve military gains," they added. Air strikes kill 17 in Khartoum The conflict in Sudan has been going on since April 15 with multiple truces agreed and broken. On Saturday, 17 civilians including five children were killed in air strikes in Khartoum, the news agency AFP reported citing a citizens' support committee. Earlier, Khartoum residents reported air strikes around Yarmouk, which is home to a weapons manufacturing and arms depot complex where the RSF claimed "full control" in early June. And on Friday, deputy army chief Yasser Atta warned civilians to keep away from houses where the RSF were located because the army "will attack them at any time". Previously, a 24-hour ceasefire from June 10-11 provided Khartoum's residents with some relief from air strikes and artillery exchanges that ravaged neighbourhoods across the capital city. However, fighting resumed within 10 minutes of the ceasefire ending. An influx of injured people in Chad's hospitals On Saturday, medics in Chad said that they were overwhelmed by hundreds of wounded people fleeing Sudan's Darfur region. "We are overwhelmed in the operating theatre. We urgently need more beds and more staff," said Seybou Diarra, a physician and project coordinator in Adre, Chad, for the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) charity, AFP reported. In a statement, the MSF said that as violence raged in West Darfur, wounded people were coming in waves to the hospital in Adre. Over 600 patients, most with gunshot wounds, arrived at the facility over three days -- more than half of them on Friday, the statement added. Sudan conflict: Warring sides agree to new truce after days of intense fighting

It's been more than two months since the conflict in Sudan began. Already millions have been displaced and hundreds killed. Several attempts to enforce a ceasefire between the two sides have fallen flat on their faces. In the latest, the warring Sudanese generals have agreed to roll out a 72-hour-long ceasefire, mediated by Washington and Riyadh. At least 17, including 5 children have died in the latest airstrike.

Sudan's eighth attempt at ceasefire begins

It's been two months since a deadly conflict broke out in Sudan, displacing at least two million while killing over a thousand. The power struggle between the two generals, Abdel Fattah-al Burhan and the paramilitary commander Mohammed Hamdan Daga-lo, plunged the country into a devastating war, which seems nowhere near its end.
