<p>“I had never imagined that we could capture an image of oceans of water vapour in the same region where a planet is likely forming,” says Stefano Facchini, an astronomer from the University of Milan, as quoted by EurekaAlert.</p>

<p>HL Tauri, the star around which the water is swirling is 450 light-years away from Earth in the Taurus constellation.</p>

<p>"It is well known that some white dwarfs — slowly cooling embers of stars like our Sun — are cannibalising pieces of their planetary systems," said lead author Stefano Bagnulo, an astronomer at Armagh Observatory and Planetarium in Northern Ireland, in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Now we have discovered that the star's magnetic field plays a key role in this process, resulting in a scar on the white dwarf's surface," he added.</p>

<p>White dwarfs are formed when fuel gets depleted from stars, ranging between one-tenth and eight times the mass of the sun, and no nuclear fusion is carried out.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When this occurs, the star's outer layer is removed and a compact, dense, white-hot core is revealed which slowly cools over time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per a study published in the journal Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in 2001, nearly 97 per cent of the stars in the Milky Way, which include the sun, are destined to become white dwarfs.</p>

<p>The Milky Way galaxy, home to Earth, the Sun and billions of other celestial bodies has a supermassive black hole. The black hole, with its unimaginably massive gravitational pull, holds the entire galaxy together, which in turn, revolves around the black hole (Sagittarius A*).</p>

<p>The closer a celestial body is to the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way, more is its velocity in space as it revolves around the Sagittarius A* black hole. The immediate vicinity of the black hole is a massively chaotic place where stars are hurtling about at speeds of thousands of kilometres per second. These are called S-stars.</p>

<p>Scientists believed that since the vicinity of the black hole was such a chaotic place, the process of star formation can't take place and hence the S-stars must have come there from elsewhere.</p>

<p>But a mysterious star near the black hole piqued scientific interest and a study has said that the star did not come there from other parts of the Milky Way galaxy but may have come from outside of the galaxy itself!</p>

<p>An extraordinary detection of the highest energy gamma rays from a dead star called Vela Pulsar has been made by&nbsp;scientists using the H.E.S.S. observatory in Namibia, as per an international team who made the announcement on October 5 in the journal Nature Astronomy. The gamma rays emitted by the dead star&nbsp;Vela Pulsar were found to possess an astonishing energy level of 20 tera-electronvolts, equivalent to around ten trillion times the energy of visible light.</p>

<p>Pulsars are remnants of massive stars that underwent explosive supernova events. These explosions leave behind tiny, dense stars with diameters of approximately 20 kilometres.</p>

<h2><strong>Pulsars as cosmic lighthouses</strong></h2>

<p>Pulsars emit beams of electromagnetic radiation that rotate like cosmic lighthouses. When these beams cross our solar system, we observe periodic flashes of radiation, known as pulses.</p>

<p>“On their outward journey, the electrons acquire energy and release it in the form of the observed radiation beams,” said Bronek Rudak from the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center (CAMK PAN) in Poland, also a co-author.</p>

As per the calculations, material equivalent to the mass of three Earths has been ripped from the atmosphere of Swift J0230 and heated up by falling into the black hole.<br />

The intense heat, which is estimated to be around 2,000,000C (3,600,000F), releases a large amount of X-rays that were first picked up by Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory of NASA. As per the estimate of the researchers, the black hole is around 10,000 to 100,000 times the mass of the sun, which makes it a supermassive black hole in small size.</p>

Scientists say that they have observed a dying star swallowing a planet for the first time, offering a preview of Earth's expected fate in around five billion years. Astronomers had previously seen the before-and-after effects of this process, but had never before caught a planet in the act of being consumed.

<p>Scientists for the first time, witnessed a star gulping down a whole planet, giving them a glimpse of how the Earth may reach its end after billions of years when the sun runs out of fuel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Astronomers reported that they observed what appeared to them a gas giant, which was bigger than Jupiter, getting eaten by its own star. The star, similar to the sun, was seen puffing up with old age for eons and eventually, its size swelled so big that it ended up engulfing the close-orbiting planet.</p>

<p>The act of a star gobbling up its own planet appeared to be a gloomy preview of how the Earth would end when the sun turns into a red giant and eats up the initial four inner planets.</p>

<p>"If it's any consolation, this will happen in about 5 billion years," said Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics' co-author Morgan MacLeod.</p>

<p>The galactic feast took place between 10,000 and 15,000 years ago close to the Aquila constellation after the star completed its 10 billion years. After the planet went down the stellar hatch, a swift hot outburst of light took place and a long-lasting stream of dust was seen which shined brightly in cold infrared energy, the researchers stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers have earlier seen signs of stars nibbling at planets and decoded the aftermath of gobbling, however, it was the first time they saw the act of swallowing, as per the study which appeared in the journal Nature.</p>

<p>The luminous outburst was spotted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Kishalay De while reviewing sky scans which were captured by the California Institute of Technology's Palomar Observatory. Data crunching and additional observations were needed to unravel the mystery which revealed that the star, instead of eating up its companion star, gobbled up its planet.</p>

<p>The discoveries made are "very plausible," stated Carole Haswell, an astrophysicist at Britain's Open University. Haswell had headed a team in 2010 which used the Hubble Space Telescope to spot the star WASP-12 which was eating its planet.</p>

<p>"This is a different sort of eating. This star gobbled a whole planet in one gulp. In contrast, WASP-12 b and the other hot Jupiters we have previously studied are being delicately licked and nibbled," Haswell said.&nbsp;</p>

Data crunching and additional observations were needed to unravel the mystery which revealed that the star, instead of eating up its companion star, gobbled up its planet. <p>“Compared to previous infrared images, we see the incredible detail that we haven’t been able to access before,” stated Tea Temim who works at Princeton University, New Jersey.</p>

<p>Temim has been working as the Web programme's co-investigator and was involved in capturing the images. Cas A was widely studied in different observatories by other telescopes which included the Chandra X-ray Observatory and NASA’s Hubble Telescope.</p>

<p>However, the new mid-infrared images which were clicked by Webb hold a huge amount of new scientific information.</p>

<p>Bardsey Island off the Welsh coast, also known popularly as Ynys Enlli, has become the first sanctuary in Europe to be awarded International Dark Sky Sanctuary certification. The award is extended to those sanctuaries that have an "exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights."</p>

Bardsey Island off the Welsh coast, also known popularly as Ynys Enlli, has become the first sanctuary in Europe to be awarded International Dark Sky Sanctuary certification.

The award is extended to those sanctuaries that have an "exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights." Presently, the island has only two Permanent Residents, Mari Huws, 30, and her partner Emyr Owen, 36. "We're chuffed -- it's momentous for the island," Huws said. The couple is super-excited with the recognition given to the island where they have been living for four years now. The island now joins the list of 17 such spots which received the designation for their amazing stargazing experience. The sanctuary designation is given in a bid to increase the awareness of these fragile sites and promote their long-term conservation. <p>In a recently concluded study, an international team of astronomers made use of National Science Foundation's (NSF) Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) network to detect a Jupiter-like planet in a binary system (GJ 896AB). The binary system is just 20 light-years away from Earth.</p>

<p>The team used a technique called astrometry to detect the planet. The same method allowed thes scientists to create 3-dimensional architecture of the system.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Betelguese is towards the end of his life. During its hayday, it was fusing hydrogen into helium. But now, with hydrogen depleting, it has become red and fusing helium into carbon and oxygen.</p>

<p>The study of change in colour is not for general amusement but it gives scientists a better estimate of its remaining life.</p>

One of the brightest stars in the sky changed its colour, says study

Scientists have now captured sharpest (yet) image of the most massive star known to us till now. Compared to the mesmerising and breathtaking space images that come our way usually, this one might look ordinary but the observation has led scientists to furter refine our understanding of massive stars even bigger than our Sun.</p>

<p>The name of this star is R136a1. It is in the heart of Tarantula Nebula and is the largest known star in the Universe. Previous attempts to click sharp images of this star were successful in a limited way because the star is situated amid dust and near other stars in the nebula.</p>

But the new observations indicate a possibility that R136a1 may only be beetween 170 and 230 times more massive than our Sun. This has helped scientists refine our understanding of the cosmos. Based on these observations, scientists think that &nbsp;“the upper limit on stellar masses may also be smaller than previously thought”.</p>

<p>Giant stars live fast and die young. They burn their fuel quickly and have a life of just a few million years. This may sound a lot but when we compare that to the estimated life of Sun (10 billion years) it's easy to accept that giant stars die out 'quickly'.</p>

Scientists click sharpest ever image of most massive known star in the Universe

A French scientist Etienne Klein shared a picture that claimed to be of a star taken from the James Webb telescope which actually turned out to be an image of a Spanish sausage, Chorizo. The picture was claimed to be of Proxima Centauri, star located away from the Sun in the southern constellation of Centaurus.

<p>Such type of supernovas are an important tool for measuring cosmic distances. Observations of these supernovas began in 1998. These observations since then have revealed that the Universe is expanding at an accelerating pace. This expansion has been attributed to Dark Energy. The true nature of the Dark Energy is still unknown. The discovery of Dark Energy, inspite of its unknown properties had bagged Nobel Prize of the year 2011.</p>

Star burns brighter even after supernova explosion

<p>A star when alive and kicking, can literally be life-giver in its planetary system. Take for example the Solar System. The Sun created the planetary system, and endowed Earth with life itself. The planets peacefully revolve around the star and everything is somewhat alright.</p>

<p>But astronomers have now observed a dead star who is involved in what is being called 'cosmic cannibalism. The dead star is ripping apart its own planetary system.</p>

<p>The star is called G238-44. It is a White Dwarf star. Normal star the size of our Sun, on completion of its life, becomes a White Dwarf.</p>

<p>However, prior to becoming a White Dwarf, such star becomes Red Giant. In this phase, it expands rapidly and disrupts orbits of the planets revolving around it. This sends them on a haywire path.</p>

<p>What's happening, in this case, is that the planets are disintegrating due to the tidal forces of the White Dwarf. The result is total chaos with planetary material falling onto the White Dwarf star.</p>

<p>We may get to witness this cosmic process from afar but 5 billion years in future when&nbsp;the Solar System will meet the same fate.</p>

<p>"When a star like our Sun expands into a bloated red giant late in its life, it will shed mass by puffing off its outer layers. One consequence of this can be the gravitational scattering of small objects like asteroids, comets, and moons by any remaining large planets. Like pinballs in an arcade game, the surviving objects can be thrown into highly eccentric orbits," says NASA on its website.</p>

<p>"...5 billion years from now. Earth might be completely vaporized along with the inner planets. But the orbits of many of the asteroids in the main asteroid belt will be gravitationally perturbed by Jupiter and will eventually fall onto the white dwarf that the remnant Sun will become."</p>

<p>IPL media rights will be up for grabs when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) conduct the much-awaited e-auction on Sunday (June 12). A number of big companies are in the fray to secure the IPL media rights for the next five-year cycle from 2023 to 2027. Disney/Star held the IPL media rights for the 2018-2022 cycle and will be looking to do all they could to ensure they can retain the broadcasting rights of one of the biggest sporting events in the world at present.</p>

<p>While a number of big names are set to battle it out for the broadcasting rights of the IPL for the 2023-27 cycle, Amazon INC is likely to pull out of the race. As per a report in Bloomberg, Jeff Bezos' Amazon is planning to withdraw from the race which is also set to involve arch-rival Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries Ltd among other big players.</p>

<p>The report claims that Amazon has already invested more than 6 billion USD in the country and is not looking to spend a huge sum to acquire the IPL streaming rights for the next five years. Amazon has reportedly thrown the towel and will not engage in a bidding war for the IPL media rights which is set to fetch BCCI a staggering 7.7 million USD.</p>

However, the amount is expected to rise around three&nbsp;times this year with the IPL growing into a ten-team tournament now. <p>The IPL media rights have been divided into four packages - A, B, C, and D. While package A will consist of TV rights for the Indian subcontinent only, package B will have&nbsp;the digital rights for the Indian subcontinent only. package C will have digital rights for a special set of matches for the Indian subcontinent while package D will have TV and digital rights for the rest of the world.</p>

<p>As per ESPN Cricinfo, the base price of package A is around Rs 18,130 crore (USD 2.33 billion), package B is around Rs 12,210 crore (USD 1.57 billion) and package D will be INR 1,110 crore (USD 142.8 million) respectively.</p>

As per a report in Bloomberg, Jeff Bezos' Amazon is planning to withdraw from the race which is also set to involve arch-rival Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries Ltd among other big players. <p>"To the best of my knowledge, that's a record for any object beyond our Solar System. And what makes this star so unique is that it has a very high relative proportion of the elements listed along the bottom two-thirds of the periodic table. We even detected gold," said astronomer Ian Roederer of the University of Michigan.</p>

<p>"These elements were made by the rapid neutron capture process. That's really the thing we're trying to study: the physics in understanding how, where and when those elements were made."</p>
