A total of 13 arrests were made in Liverpool and Leeds as thousands of fans gathered outside stadiums on Wednesday night to celebrate their clubs' title triumphs despite warnings to stay at home.

Merseyside Police introduced a 48-hour dispersal zone around Liverpool's Anfield stadium during the club's match against Chelsea.

Nine arrests were made as large numbers congregated outside the Kop end, where Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy after a 5-3 victory.

Ahead of the match in Liverpool, the club, council, police and supporters' group Spirit of Shankly had urged people to celebrate from their homes due to ongoing concerns over the spread of coronavirus.

"Although the numbers who gathered last night could have been significantly higher, it is still disappointing that people did not listen to requests from ourselves, Liverpool Football Club and Liverpool City Council not to gather in large numbers because of the risks still posed by COVID-19," said Merseyside police assistant chief constable Natalie Perischine.

Thousands of supporters also celebrated outside Anfield last month when the team's first top-flight title in 30 years was confirmed and huge numbers gathered at the city's Pier Head the following night, where police reported violent confrontations.

"Officers made a total of nine arrests outside Anfield last night for affray, assault, people who were drunk and disorderly and drug-driving," added Perischine.

Leeds defended the club's decision for players to parade the Championship trophy in an open-top bus at Elland Road after their 4-0 win over Charlton on Wednesday.

In a repeat of scenes outside Elland Road when promotion back to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years was confirmed on Friday, thousands of supporters gathered to celebrate.

Four arrests were made and a police officer suffered minor injuries.

Fans were then joined by the players on the bus after their pitchside trophy presentation had concluded.

"Following consultation with the SAG (Safety Advisory Group) and (Leeds City) Council, Leeds United arranged for a bus to be parked outside the East Stand reception as a contingency to assist dispersal should a crowd congregate at Elland Road, despite a month-long campaign from the club and supporter groups to encourage supporters to stay at home," said a club spokesman.

"The safety group believed that a brief appearance from the players with the Championship trophy would help to signal an end to proceedings, encouraging fans to head home safely.

"In challenging circumstances fan safety has always been our priority."

England National Cricket Selectors on Thursday announced 14-man strong squad for the third and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/england-vs-west-indies-3rd-test-preview-manchester-gears-up-for-series-decider-315395">final Test against the West Indies at the Old Trafford in Manchester, which is scheduled to start on Friday 24</a>.

After missing the second Test for breaching bio-secure protocols, star speedster Jofra Archer finds his way into the squad with James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran among the pacers, giving selection headaches to captain Joe Root.&nbsp;

Ben Stokes retained his spot in the squad after talks of him getting rested for the series decided surfaced in the build-up to the match. Jos Buttler, despite being completely off-form in the recent times in the longest format of the game, continues to be in the squad and it would be interesting to see whether he gets the nod in the final playing XI.&nbsp;

The likes of Dom Sibley, Rory Burns, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Dom Bess continue be the mainstay of the batting line-up and are expected to start in the Manchester Test.

With all of Anderson, Broad, Archer, Woakes, Curran and Wood named in the squad, Root and head coach Chris Silverwood have been left spoilt for choices. Archer and Wood were pretty inconsistent in the series opener while Woakes and Curran helped England equalize the series and hence the team selection could raise a few eyebrows if the winning combination is tweaked to accommodate either of Anderson, Archer or Wood. &nbsp;

Japan holds subdued celebrations on Thursday evening to mark one year until the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics with the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to raise concerns whether the quadrennial Games will go ahead next year.

Tokyo was supposed to be cynosure of all eyes with thousands of athletes and fans gracing the events but now the organisers will hold a small event at an empty National Stadium after the public were barred from attending the event following new surge of positive cases.

Olympic countdown board have been reset around the Japanese capital as the digital signs display the message "365 days to go to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics".

Despite the setbacks and fresh concerns, Japanese and Olympic officials are optimistic of hosting the Games in 2021, serving as a symbol of the world's recovery from the virus.

"They will be the first worldwide gathering after the coronavirus," International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach insisted last week.

However, some experts and officials, including Bach and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have raised concerns that there could be a first peace-time cancellation of the showpiece event if the pandemic is not under control by 2021.

While the decision to delay the Games was historic when cases were emerging thick and fast and countries imposed lockdowns that forced the cancellation of qualifiers and events, situation have eased a bit across Europe with infections and deaths from the dreaded virus in decline.&nbsp;

Tokyo also recorded 366 new infections on Thursday, a daily record.

"I'm afraid about the situation," said Sachiko Ahunwan, a 50-year-old department store employee. "It's unclear how far the coronavirus can be settled," she told AFP.

One major obstacle has been cleared, with Tokyo 2020 confirming this month that it has secured all the venues originally contracted for the Games.

"Now athletes aiming to take part in the Tokyo Olympics can set concrete goals to work toward," Tokyo 2020 sports director Koji Murofushi said last week.

But sports stars remain less optimistic.

"To be honest, I still can't think about next year's Olympics," Olympic champion and Japanese judo king Shohei Ono told public broadcaster NHK. "I'm just setting a goal only for a week ahead."

In June 2020, former sports minister of Sri Lanka Mahindananda Aluthgamage had claimed that Sri Lanka ‘sold’ the 2011 World Cup final, which India had famously won under the leadership of MS Dhoni. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/wc-2011-match-fixing-investigation-sri-lanka-skipper-kumar-sangakkara-grilled-for-8-hours-mahela-jayawardene-next-in-line-310381">An investigation started as the likes of Sangakkara</a>, Mahela Jayawardene, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/wc-2011-match-fixing-investigation-upul-tharanga-grilled-by-siu-kumar-sangakkara-to-appear-next-309908">Upul Tharanga</a>, Aravinda de Silva were quizzed by the special investigation team after the Sri Lankan government launched a probe into the matter. “It is disappointing and also a bit amusing at times. And we had that recently when the ex-sports minister did quite a frivolous claim and we had to go in and answer questions,” Sangakkara was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“Actually, to go through and answer those questions, and making those statements was really really healthy for the game, whether it was me, the selectors, Mahela or anyone else. I think that process is really important for people to understand what respect for the game means,” the former Sri Lanka captain added.

People protested outside Sri Lanka Cricket’s headquarters after Sangakkara and Jayawardene were questioned as the fans criticized the government for harassing their heroes over false allegations. Sri Lankan police soon cleared all the selectors and cricketers as no evidence was found.

“The game of cricket needs people of integrity and people who are not afraid to speak their minds,” Sangakkara said on the probe.

“And also when you have any questions to be answered, you don’t need to hide, you can answer any of those. When it comes to politics, when you have politically and morally corrupt individuals, who are affiliated with the sport even in an official capacity, you understand where all this comes from and you don’t have to be afraid to second guess what their motivations are,” he added.

England and West Indies are set to go into the third and final match of the Test series at the Old Trafford in Manchester. The three-match series has so far been an enthralling encounter between the two sides with both winning one game each. With the series firmly locked at 1-1, the finale promises to be an edge-of-the-set contest.

West Indies started the series with a four-wicket win against England in Southampton with the visitors standing out with both ball and the willow. However, England fought back strong in the second Test and equalized the series with a thumping 113-run win.&nbsp;

The third match of the series comes with plenty of headaches for both England and Windies camp. While team selection is a major issue going into the series decider, weather forecast is something which won’t make the English team happy. Notably, a draw is enough for the Windies to take the Wisden Trophy back to the Caribbean.&nbsp;

<h2>A debut for Chemar Holder on cards? Will Rahkeem Cornwall get a game?</h2>

West Indies bowlers looked tired and sluggish in the second Test after a phenomenal outing in the opener. While Shannon Gabriel struggled throughout the course of the match, Kemar Roach and Jason Holder looked out of their usual rhythm. That brings the likes of Chemar Holder, Rahkeem Cornwall into the scene but will Jason pick inexperienced guns in such a high-profile decider? That remains to be seen.

<h2>Selection headache in England camp as well</h2>

For England, the selection headache is immense. The entire pace bowling department consisting the likes of James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Jofra Archer, Chris Woakes, Sam Curran and Mark Wood are available. While Wood, Archer and Anderson played the Southampton Test which England lost, Broad, Woakes and Curran helped England fight back in the series. Dropping Anderson at his home ground, in the final Test, would be a massive call by Joe Root. And for Woakes or Curran, missing out after solid performance in the second Test would be a heartbreak.&nbsp;

<h2>Rain gods to play spoilsport?</h2>

Weather forecast, too, isn’t great for cricket. With Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday expected to be hit by persistent showers which makes the likelihood of a draw a major possibility.&nbsp;

Nonetheless, the three-match Test series between England and West Indies have been a gripping watch for cricket lovers and everyone would be hoping to have a good game minus the presence of rain gods.

“We’ve waited so long to finally deliver this for the fans. This has been such a special season for us, this is the one everyone wanted,” said Alexander-Arnold afterwards as the team lifted the trophy after a 30-year wait.

“It’s been a journey, a process, and every single player has been part of it.”

Liverpool on Thursday played out an eight-goal thriller with Chelsea at the Anfield as Jurgen Klopp’s Reds defeated the London outfit 5-3 before lifting the Premier League trophy after a 30-year wait. While fans weren’t allowed inside the stadium due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, Liverpool made sure to make it a glitzy event with terrific lighting show and fireworks to make it a memorable evening. The iconic Kop was empty but fans gathered outside the Anfield stadium to experience the historic moment as Jordan Henderson lifted the coveted trophy amid light show and fireworks. Kenny Dalglish, the last Liverpool manager to deliver the title handed over the trophy to Henderson as history shook hands with the current legacy. Watch: Henderson's shuffle to dressing room celebrations as Liverpool lift Premier League trophy

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp has urged the club’s supporters to celebrate at home as the club prepare to lift the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> trophy following their clash with Chelsea on Wednesday.

Klopp’s Liverpool secured their first top-flight title in 30 years with seven games to spare and will be presented with the trophy on a special podium built on the Kop stand at Anfield.

The Merseyside police has already warned fans not to repeat the widespread gatherings that took place on the city’s waterfront after the club’s title win last month, amid fears of a fresh spike in COVID-19 infections.

“We don’t want to say it is completely wrong but it is not right. We cannot excuse one wrong thing with another,” Klopp told a news conference on Tuesday.

“The first chance we get, will have this party, but only when it is appropriate.

“It’s a challenge, but we’ve faced bigger ones at this club. Stay at home with family.”

Wednesday’s opponents Chelsea have already spent big in the transfer market to recruit attackers Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, as Frank Lampard’s side look to mount a title challenge next season.

But Klopp said he will not use the club’s lack of activity in the transfer market as an excuse if they do not defend the title next season.

“I am happy with my squad 100%. I was here last year when people wanted us to sign him and him,” Klopp added.

“It’s not that we don’t want, we try to make the right decisions, and then COVID came. The situation changed and not for the better.

“We buy if we have the money for it and the need for it. If one of these things is not there, we will not buy and we will go again. And we will not use it as an excuse.”

Klopp urges Liverpool fans to stay home for Premier League trophy presentation

Dean Smith urged Aston Villa to finish the job after they climbed out of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> relegation zone as Trezeguet clinched a priceless 1-0 win against Arsenal on Tuesday.

Smith's side have their survival fate in their own hands after the Egypt winger's first-half strike at Villa Park.

Watford's 4-0 thrashing against Manchester City earlier on Tuesday had opened the door for Villa to escape the bottom three.

And Villa seized their chance with a first home Premier League win over Arsenal in 18 attempts dating back to 1998.

Villa are now fourth bottom and have moved ahead of third-bottom Watford on goal difference, with Smith's men on -26 compared to the Hornets' -27.

They head to&nbsp;West Ham for their final game of the season on Sunday, while Watford visit Arsenal and second-bottom Bournemouth, three points from safety, travel to Everton.

There are a multitude of permutations that could decide relegation, but Villa will be safe if they can better Watford's result on what is certain to be a dramatic finale.

If Villa and Watford both win, goal difference or goals scored will decide who goes down.

"It is a big boost, that's for sure. We knew we had to get that win to catch Watford and now we have got the season in our own hands," Smith said.

"That's all you can ask going into the last game. It was a great performance and an even better result against a good team who just beat two of the best teams in Europe.

"We have taken the season to the last day. Watford can go and win at Arsenal so we have to make sure we win at West Ham."

Having secured an FA Cup final place by beating Manchester City on Saturday, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta made six changes and Arsenal looked a shadow of the team who impressed at Wembley.

"Emotionally and physically it's been a very demanding week but I saw a team who wanted to fight until the end," Arteta insisted.

Arsenal cannot finish higher than eighth and must win the FA Cup final against Chelsea to qualify for next season's Europa League.&nbsp;

For all the positive signs since Arteta took charge in December, Arsenal will suffer their worst Premier League finish since 1995.

"It tells you the gap doesn't lie. We have to make that smaller and smaller," Arteta said.

"I know where we are in certain areas and where we need to improve. We will get that."

<h2>- Arteta plea -</h2>

&nbsp;

A plane trailing a banner reading "Back Arteta Kroenke Out" was flown over Villa Park during the match, but Arteta pleaded with Arsenal fans to trust he has the support of the US-based owner.

"The Kroenkes and the board and the sporting director, I have their full backing. I have that 100 percent. The fans have to believe what I'm saying," Arteta added.

Arsenal's long-standing weakness at set-pieces reared its head again as Villa snatched the lead in the 27th minute.

Tyrone Mings glanced Conor Hourihane's corner across the six-yard box and Trezeguet was left unmarked to blast a fierce strike past Arsenal keeper Emiliano Martinez.

Trezeguet has been Villa's savour as the stakes have got higher and his vital goal followed his brace in the victory against Crystal Palace nine days earlier.

Jack Grealish, strongly linked with a close-season move, was captaining Villa in what could have been his last home game with the club he supported as a boy.

Asked after the match about his future, Grealish said: "I'm not too sure at the moment. I have one aim and that's to keep Villa in the Premier League. That's all I'm thinking about."

Arsenal were better in the second half but Bukayo Saka blazed over from a good position 12 yards out.

With the tension mounting, Villa rode their luck when Eddie Nketiah's glancing header hit the post and bounced back into Pepe Reina's hands.

Villa out of relegation zone as Trezeguet sinks Arsenal

Tokyo 2020 organisers will this autumn begin the task of devising safety protocols to allow the Games to take place if the coronavirus pandemic is still raging.

But Tokyo 2020, which had been due to start on Friday until it was postponed for a year, will not be the first Olympic Games to face a health crisis, although the scale of the challenge posed by COVID-19 is unprecedented.

AFP looks at previous Olympics that went ahead in the face of viral outbreaks.

&nbsp;

<h2>- Nagano 1998: Flu -</h2>

There was an outbreak of influenza the last time Japan hosted the Games -- the Winter Olympics in the central city of Nagano in 1998.

Nearly 1,500 schoolchildren in the Nagano region came down with the flu and some 200 people connected with the Games were taken ill -- although officials stressed other illnesses were also to blame.

The virus prevented Norwegian 1,500 metre gold medal-winning speed skater Adne Sondral from going for a double in the 1,000 metres.

German figure skating medal hopeful Tanja Szewczenko pulled out over health fears and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) also got involved, warning competitors against the flu and advising them to take on plenty of fluids.

That outbreak of flu was unrelated to the killer bird flu hitting southern China at the time.

&nbsp;

<h2>- Rio 2016: Zika -</h2>

Ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics, the talk was dominated by Zika, a mosquito-borne virus that can cause pregnant women to give birth to babies with microcephaly -- a deformation that results in abnormally small brains and heads.

The Zika outbreak began in 2015 and infected around 1.5 million people, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), mainly in Brazil.

There was concern that international visitors to the Games could spread the virus globally, even though the WHO assessed the risk as "minimal."

Some leading tennis players and golfers -- including golf's current world number one Rory McIlroy -- decided not to compete due to fears over the virus.

The stories proved more dramatic than the facts, with no new cases reported during the Games.

&nbsp;

<h2>- Mexico 1968: Flu -</h2>

The 1968 Olympics in Mexico took place during one of the worst pandemics of the 20th century -- the Hong Kong Flu.

It spread throughout Asia after emerging in the then British colony neighbouring southern China, and had reached the Americas by late 1968, eventually killing around one million people but had little impact on the Games.

&nbsp;

<h2>- Antwerp 1920: Flu -</h2>

Held in the aftermath of the Spanish Flu, considered to be the most deadly in history and claiming up to 50 million lives, the Antwerp Games were seen as a symbol of humanity's effort to rebuild after the devastation of World War I.

Although the Spanish Flu killed five times more people than died in 1914-18 war, the impact of the virus was overshadowed by the global conflict.

When the Games went viral: historic Olympic health scares

The development of a coronavirus vaccine or treatment will be key to allowing the postponed Tokyo 2020 games to open in a year's time, organising committee president Yoshiro Mori said Wednesday.

Asked what factors will be crucial for the rescheduled Games to go ahead, Mori said "it would be whether the coronavirus woe is settling down."

"Specifically, the first point will be that a vaccine or drug has been developed," he said in an interview with national broadcaster NHK, published Wednesday.

Asked whether Tokyo could hold the Games if the virus situation remained unchanged, Mori said: "If things continue as they are now, we couldn't."

But he said that scenario was hypothetical. "I can't imagine a situation like this will continue for another year," he said

Tokyo 2020 should have been opening on Friday, but the Games were postponed in March as the coronavirus spread across the globe, marking&nbsp;the worst disruption to an Olympics since two editions were cancelled during World War II.

The Games are now set to open on July 23, 2021, but recent polls have shown less public enthusiasm for hosting the event, as virus cases show a resurgence in Japan.

Just one in four people in Japan want to see the delayed Tokyo Games held next year, with most backing either further delay or a cancellation, according to a survey published by Kyodo News this week.

Most of those backing a delay or cancellation said they simply didn't believe the pandemic could be contained in time for the Games.

Among the options that have been floated for a Games held during a pandemic is the possibility of limited spectators, or holding the event behind closed doors.

But Mori said reducing the number of spectators would be tough.

And he said holding the event without any fans was not an option for now.

"If it's the only way to do it, then it's something we'd have to consider. If that happens, there might be talk of cancellation," he was quoted as saying, without elaborating.

With just over a year to go until the rescheduled Games, there are persistent doubts about whether the delay will be sufficient for the pandemic to be brought under control.

Japan has so far reported 26,300 COVID-19 cases with 989 deaths, but Tokyo has seen an increase in cases recently and the country's borders remain almost completely sealed to overseas visitors.

Virus vaccine key for Olympics go-ahead in 2021: Tokyo chief

Tokyo Olympics organisers are preparing to host the Games next year even if the global coronavirus pandemic hasn’t eased substantially, organising committee chief executive Toshiro Muto told Reuters on Tuesday.

The Tokyo Olympics had been scheduled to start on Friday but were put back to 2021 because of the pandemic.

Since then, organisers have scrambled to rearrange an event that has been almost a decade in the making whilst trying to ensure next year’s Olympics are safe for athletes, officials and supporters.

Muto said that although organisers hoped the threat posed by the virus could be reduced, nobody knows what the situation will be when the Games start on July 23, 2021.

Organisers are assuming coronavirus will remain a major problem.

“It is rather difficult for us to expect that the coronavirus pandemic is contained,” Muto told Reuters. “But if we can deliver the Games in Tokyo with coronavirus, Tokyo can be the role model for the next Olympic Games or other various international events.”

Muto said he hoped Tokyo 2020 could be the benchmark in a post-pandemic world.

“By delivering the Games successfully in Tokyo we strongly hope that can create a legacy that is in the history of mankind.”

<h3>NEW SPONSORS</h3>

The delay to the Games will incur additional costs for organisers.

The International Olympic Committee has already estimated that the postponement will cost them $800 million but the Japanese side has been less forthcoming in giving exact figures.

Muto said the final figure wouldn’t be known until December but hoped that bringing on new sponsors, despite the grim economic forecast, would help bridge the gap.

“I know that businesses are in dire circumstances because of coronavirus but still there are companies who are coming forward to say they want to sponsor the Games, which we appreciate very much,” Muto said.

“It is a bright piece of news.”

On Wednesday, Tokyo 2020 announced that Tokyo Skytree, the tallest tower in the world, is joining as a new Games sponsor.

Muto said he hoped all of Tokyo 2020’s current sponsors would extend their contracts until the start of the Games next year, although this will come at a cost.

A poll conducted by Japanese public broadcaster NHK last month found two-thirds of Tokyo 2020’s corporate sponsors were undecided on whether to continue their support.

“We are hoping that there will be additional contributions (from existing sponsors) in terms of sponsorship fee because of the postponement of a year,” Muto said. “We would appreciate a lot if they agree to this.”

Muto did not give the names of any other new sponsors.

<h3>SEPTEMBER MEETINGS</h3>

The Games were already set to cost more than 1.35 trillion yen before the postponement, and increased spending might further alienate a public already sceptical of an Olympics they once embraced.

A recent poll conducted by Kyodo News found that fewer than one in four favoured holding the Games as scheduled next year.

Muto said meetings would be held starting in September, with members of the Japanese government and the local Tokyo Metropolitan Government on how best to rebuild support for the Games.

“By making a nationwide effort to implement all possible, conceivable measures to battle coronavirus, the people of the world will be able to come to Tokyo with a peace of mind,” he said. “Once we create such an environment, I think people’s opinions will change.”

“But if we can deliver the Games in Tokyo with coronavirus, Tokyo can be the role model for the next Olympic Games or other various international events.” Muto said he hoped Tokyo 2020 could be the benchmark in a post-pandemic world. “By delivering the Games successfully in Tokyo we strongly hope that can create a legacy that is in the history of mankind.” NEW SPONSORS The delay to the Games will incur additional costs for organisers. Toshiro Muto, Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee Chief Executive Officer, poses for a photograph during an interview with Reuters ahead of the one-year countdown to the Tokyo Olympics that have been postponed to 2021 due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, in Tokyo, Japan July 21, 2020. Picture taken July 21, 2020. REUTERS/Issei Kato The International Olympic Committee has already estimated that the postponement will cost them $800 million but the Japanese side has been less forthcoming in giving exact figures. “It is a bright piece of news.” On Wednesday, Tokyo 2020 announced that Tokyo Skytree, the tallest tower in the world, is joining as a new Games sponsor. “We would appreciate a lot if they agree to this.” Muto did not give the names of any other new sponsors. SEPTEMBER MEETINGS The Games were already set to cost more than 1.35 trillion yen before the postponement, and increased spending might further alienate a public already sceptical of an Olympics they once embraced.

England will be heading into the third Test against West Indies at the Old Trafford in Manchester in what promises to be a nail-biting series finale. However, skipper Joe Root will have some headaches regarding team selection with each and every pacer in the squad fit and raring to find a place in the XI.&nbsp;

The troika of Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran was included in the playing XI in the second Test with James Anderson and Mark Wood rested, whereas Jofra Archer missed the match due to breach of bio-secure protocols. Woakes and Curran played a huge role in helping equalize the series but with Anderson looking for a place in the XI, someone might miss the bus.&nbsp;

A schedule of six matches in seven weeks against the West Indies and then Pakistan means England have had to rotate their bowlers and Anderson does not underestimate the difficult choices facing coach Chris Silverwood and captain Joe Root.

“I presume the best three players will play but it’s going to be a difficult decision for Joe and Chris and there will be some disappointed guys,” Anderson told a news conference on Wednesday.

There have been suggestions that Anderson, who turns 38 next week, and Broad will not bowl again but the veteran seamer is of the view that they should play together if fit.

“Our record together speaks for itself and I’d really like to think that if we are both fit and England are picking their best bowling attack then we’d both be in that,” he said.

“It’s a good position to be in because it shows we have strength in depth,” Anderson added.

Liverpool great Graeme Souness has hailed the "incredible" consistency of Jurgen Klopp's champions as they prepare to receive the Premier League trophy at Anfield on Wednesday.

Liverpool, who won the title with a record seven games to spare, have lost just four matches over the past two seasons in the English top flight.

Captain Jordan Henderson will lift the trophy after their match against Chelsea.

"It's not just this season, it's the last two years, the consistency levels have been incredible," Souness, who skippered Liverpool to three league titles, told the BBC.

"They just missed out (on the title) last year, but they are the current Premier League champions, World Club champions and European champions.

"Their consistency is just off the charts and I know how hard it is to achieve that."

Souness, who won five league titles and three European Cups in his time as a player at Liverpool and later managed the club, singled out Senegalese forward Sadio Mane for praise.

"I enjoy watching (Sadio) Mane -- the hardest thing to do is be a striker in the game," he said.

"He's a warrior, he's got great skills and his attitude is always spot on. He's never a 95 percent, he's 100 percent all the time."

The 67-year-old Scot, a tough-tackling midfielder, said he was also impressed by his modern-day successors in the engine room.

"They have a really hard-working midfield that never give their opponents peace if they are on the ball, they are after you all the time," he said.&nbsp;

"But forget the individuals -- they work as a team and that's what makes them so special. They are all at it every time they go across the white line."

<h2>- 'Demons' -</h2>

Another former Liverpool captain, Steven Gerrard, came agonisingly close to lifting the trophy himself under Klopp's predecessor Brendan Rodgers.

The 40-year-old, who won the Champions League with his hometown club but never tasted Premier League glory, said the title win had exorcised some ghosts.

One moment of ill-fortune in 2014 famously cost Gerrard his last chance of winning a league title as his slip allowed Demba Ba to open the scoring for Chelsea in a costly defeat at Anfield.

"It was fantastic for everyone connected to the club but it was mixed in many ways because of my own experiences being a fan and being an ex-player," said Gerrard, now manager of Rangers.

"A lot of demons were put to bed, not all of them, but certainly I felt a lot better when Liverpool got over the line recently.

"I look back every day (at not winning a Premier League title) and I think I will forever and ever. It is the one that eludes me in terms of being a player and it would have completed the set."

Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah, the two main office bearers of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) got a lifeline of two weeks after a Super Court of India bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde and L Nageswara Rao on Wednesday agreed to hear the plea filed by the Indian board after two weeks. The hearing of the case was today but now has been postponed by two weeks.

The BCCI had filed a petition on April 21 in the Supreme Court of India seeking an extension to the tenures of Shah and Ganguly till 2025. As per the BCCI’s new constitution, that was approved by the apex court in August 2018 on the basis of reforms suggested by Justice RM Lodha committee, a cooling off period of three years in compulsory after completing six years as an office-bearer in state association or the BCCI.

Ganguly had less than a week for his stint as the BCCI president to be completed while Shah’s term has already ended. Notably, Ganguly was the president of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) whereas Shah was a joint secretary in the Gujrat Cricket Association (GCA).

On Tuesday, IPL spot-fixing case petitioner Aditya Verma, also the&nbsp;secretary of the Cricket Association of Bihar, said his lawyers won't oppose a waiver of cooling-off period when the apex court hears the plea. Verma's original petition led to the Supreme Court forming the Lodha panel which recommended a number of changes, including the cooling-off period.

"I have always maintained that Sourav Ganguly is the best man to lead BCCI. I believe Dada and Jay Shah should get a full term to again stabilise BCCI," Verma told PTI.

India’s National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) has been suspended for a second period of up to six months for not conforming to international standards, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has said.

The New Delhi-based laboratory had previously been suspended in August following a WADA site visit, prohibiting it from carrying out anti-doping activities, including all analyses of urine and blood samples.

"In February 2020, when the six-month suspension period elapsed ... some outstanding non-conformities had not been addressed successfully," WADA said in a statement.

WADA’s Laboratory Expert Group “recommended the initiation of further disciplinary proceedings against the laboratory based on the outstanding non-conformities”.

WADA said the disciplinary proceedings were carried out by an independent committee that recommended an additional six-month suspension which began on July 17.

According to the World Anti-Doping Code, the laboratory has the option to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the WADA decision.

If the laboratory satisfies WADA’s Laboratory Expert Group that it has addressed the issues it may apply for reinstatement early but a failure to do so could lead to another similar suspension, WADA added.

“There will be no problem although they might have to fight a little bit with the heat. For now, the weather is good. Let’s be fair, UAE experiences a lot of heat. But September and October are still the pleasant months,” Chopra said in a video on his Youtube channel ‘Aakash Vani’.

Chopra further said that RCB might do well in the UAE. The former Indian batsman said that teams like Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab will also have an upper hand in terms on getting the most of out the conditions in the UAE.

South Africa’s limited-overs skipper Quinton de Kock has revealed that AB de Villiers was on the verge of making his international comeback and play the T20 World Cup which was earlier scheduled to be hosted by Australia later this year before the showpiece tournament was postponed amid COVID-19 pandemic.

De Villiers has time and time again expressed his willingness to play for South Africa in the T20 World Cup but doubts of his much awaited international comeback hangs in balance after the postponement of the tournament.&nbsp;

While we were pushing for him, now we will have to see when the T20 World Cup is going to happen now,” de Kock said on the Cricket Connected show.

Under the new arrangements announced on Monday, either Australia or India will host the next T20 World Cup in October-November 2021, then the other nation will hold it in 2022.

The 50-over World Cup in India, originally due to be played in March-April 2023, will be pushed back to October-November of that year, with the final on November 26.

Hockley said CA did not have a preference for hosting the T20 tournament in 2021 or 2022.

Hockley further said that Australia’s Test schedule remained unchanged with a one-off match against Afghanistan in late November followed by four Tests against India in December-January. However, he added that he was doubtful that Australian government would agree to BCCI president Sourav Ganguly’s suggestion that India could undergo a shortened quarantine after arriving in Australia.

"I think that two-week quarantine period is pretty well defined," Hockley said.

"What we're working on is that even within that quarantine environment the players will have the absolute best training facilities, so their preparation for the matches is an optimal as it can possibly be."

T20 World Cup 2020 postponement was 'inevitable', say Australia

Ben Stokes impressed with both bat and ball as England beat the West Indies by 113 runs in the second Test at Old Trafford on Monday.

West Indies, set a nominal 312 to win, were bowled out for 198 on the fifth and final day as England levelled the three-match series at 1-1.

All-rounder Stokes made 176 in England's first-innings 469-9 declared and a dashing 78 not out on Monday that set up another declaration by home captain Joe Root.

Stokes capped a dominant individual display as he also took two key wickets Monday after Stuart Broad's early treble helped reduce the West Indies to 37-4.

Shamarh Brooks (62) and Jermaine Blackwood (55) kept England at bay during a fifth-wicket stand of exactly 100.

But Stokes, yet again proved a partnership breaker when his short ball had Blackwood, who made a match-clinching 95 in West Indies' four-wicket win in the first Test at Southampton, gloving to diving wicketkeeper Jos Buttler on the stroke of tea.

From then on, it always looked likely England would finish the job, despite having no spectators to roar them on in this behind-closed-doors campaign.

"It was a brilliant week's cricket from the outset," Root told Sky Sports. "Going on and making a 400-plus score for the third time in four games, we're making real progress."

<h2>- 'Stokes getting better and better' -</h2>

As for Stokes's man-of-the-match effort, Root said it "doesn't surprise me".

"He seems to want to keep getting better and better and we're seeing those results out on the field."

Stokes played down his contribution, telling the BBC: "Everyone has put their hands up and contributed to a great win."

England's plans for this match were thrown into disarray when fast bowler Jofra Archer had to be omitted for breaching the bio-secure rules governing a series that marks international cricket's return from the coronavirus lockdown.

But such was England's dominance they still won despite the whole of Saturday's third day being washed out.

Recalled paceman Broad, angry at being rested from the series opener, struck just five balls into the West Indies second innings Monday when he had John Campbell caught behind.

Broad finished with 3-42 having rocked the West Indies in their first innings with a burst of three wickets in 14 balls.

"I'm a little disappointed with the way we batted," said West Indies captain Jason Holder.

Chris Woakes then had West Indies dangerman Kraigg Brathwaite lbw and Broad clipped the top of Shai Hope's off stump.

Brooks' fine innings ended when he was plumb lbw to left-arm quick Sam Curran.

There was a worrying moment for England when Stokes could not complete his 15th over but afterwards he said: "There's absolutely nothing to worry about."

England spinner Dom Bess got in on the act at the finish.

Two balls after Holder drove him for six, Bess bowled the all-rounder between bat and pad with a classic off-break.

Bess ended the match when Kemar Roach was brilliantly caught by Ollie Pope at short leg.

Earlier, Stokes, promoted to open in a quest for quick runs, took England to 129-3 declared in their second innings.

Having batted cautiously before upping the tempo in his first-innings century, Stokes produced another brilliantly judged batting display as England scored 92 runs in 11 overs on Monday.

Stokes should have been out for 29 when he slogged Shannon Gabriel to deep extra cover only for Campbell to drop a routine catch.

Stokes, England's captain in Root's absence for the first Test, went to fifty with a six off Gabriel that cleared the towering Holder at long-off.

The series finale, also at Old Trafford, starts on Friday, with Holder insisting: "It's all to play for.

"This is the perfect return to cricket."

There was a worrying moment for England when Stokes could not complete his 15th over but afterwards he said: "There's absolutely nothing to worry about." England spinner Dom Bess got in on the act at the finish.

Wolves moved closer to a place in the Europa League with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, while Sheffield United's own European hopes were dashed by a 1-0 defeat against Everton on Monday.

At the other end of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> table, Brighton guaranteed their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> survival with a 0-0 draw against Newcastle.

Wolves, now unbeaten in three games, opened the scoring four minutes before half-time at Molineux.

Andros Townsend lost possession and Joao Moutinho found Matt Doherty, who crossed for Portuguese midfielder Daniel Podence to head his first goal for Wolves.

Jonny condemned Palace to a seventh successive defeat in the 68th minute, turning to fire home from close-range after Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez carved open the Palace defence.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side climbed to sixth place, one point above Tottenham, and will be certain to qualify for the Europa League if they win at Chelsea in their last game of the season on Sunday.

They would also qualify if Tottenham lose at Palace in their final match.

"The idea of improvement and the building process makes sense and today we achieved two more points than last season with one game to go," Nuno said.

"Sunday's game is very difficult but let's prepare well and compete."

At Bramall Lane, Sheffield United were handed a second successive defeat, ending their bid to cap a superb first season back in the top-flight by earning a European berth.

Carlo Ancelotti's team won it in the 46th minute when Brazil forward Richarlison met Gylfi Sigurdsson's free-kick with a glancing header for his 15th goal of the season.

Chris Wilder's eighth placed side are five points behind Wolves and four points adrift of Tottenham with one game left.

"I'm disappointed for the players today. But what you try and do in a season is get your club to overachieve and we have ridiculously overachieved," Wilder said.

"Top six should never have been in the equation from the minute we set foot into the division. There are a lot of clubs that would swap places with us."

The teams who finish fifth and sixth are certain to reach next season's Europa League.

If the FA Cup winners finish in the top six, then seventh place would also qualify for the Europa League.

Arsenal, who face third-placed Chelsea in the FA Cup final, are currently 10th, meaning Tottenham are in danger of a first season without Europe competition since 2009-10.

At the Amex Stadium, Brighton got the point they needed to be mathematically certain of avoiding relegation.

Graham Potter's side were already virtually certain to stay up before the match because their goal difference is far superior to third-from-bottom Aston Villa -- the only team in the relegation zone who could have caught them.

Brighton have won just two of their last 17 league games, but ending a run of three successive home defeats moved them seven points clear of the bottom three, with Villa having just two games left.

"At this stage of the season we can talk about performances but it's about getting the points you need," Potter said.

"It's been a unique season in what we've had to deal with. It's been a challenge.&nbsp;

Injury-hit Newcastle's frailties at the back were on display when Emil Krafth failed to clear properly and then slipped over in his own area.&nbsp;

Neal Maupay stole possession but let Newcastle off the hook with a wayward finish before Leandro Trossard brought a good save from Martin Dubravka.

Miguel Almiron forced a smart stop from Brighton keeper Mat Ryan before Newcastle substitute Andy Carroll headed wide from close-range.

US 400m sprinter Michael Norman clocked a world-leading 9.86 seconds for the 100 metres at a meeting in Texas on Monday, World Athletics said.

The 22-year-old from California blasted to victory in Fort Worth in what was his first 100m race since 2016.&nbsp;

"After four long years I finally got to run the 100m," Norman said in a post on Twitter after the race.&nbsp;

Track and field's governing body World Athletics later described Norman's wind-legal time as a world-leading mark.

The previous fastest 100m time in 2020, which has seen the season decimated by the coronavirus, was a 9.91sec clocked by South Africa's Akani Simbine in Pretoria in March.

Monday's time makes Norman only the second man in history to run under 10sec for the 100m, under 20sec for the 200m, and under 44sec for the 400m.&nbsp;

The only other sprinter to duck under all three benchmarks is South Africa's Olympic 400m champion Wayde van Niekerk.&nbsp;

Norman's 100m time on Monday follows a disappointing end to his 2019 season, when an unspecified injury saw him fail to reach the final of the 400m at the World Championships in Doha, an event he had been tipped to win.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola took a swipe at Arsenal on Monday by admitting he does not respect them off the pitch.

Guardiola's side were knocked out of the FA Cup at the semi-final stage by Arsenal on Saturday as the Gunners won 2-0 at Wembley.

Guardiola was impressed by Arsenal's play under his former assistant Mikel Arteta, but he made a distinction in his thoughts about the north London club when it comes to their approach away from the pitch.

Guardiola's anger with Arsenal is thought to come from the role they played in the group of eight Premier League clubs perceived to have turned on City during their successful appeal against a two-year Champions league ban.

The group wrote to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), to try to ensure any attempt by City to delay their two-year ban while their appeal was ongoing was dismissed.

City had their ban overturned by CAS earlier this month, but Guardiola told reporters: "The opponents always deserve my respect and credit, and Arsenal, they have it.

"I have all the respect for what Arsenal are on the pitch -- not much off the pitch, but on the pitch a lot.&nbsp;

So I congratulate them and good luck against Chelsea in the final."

Meanwhile, Guardiola says he is "optimistic" as City prepare to resume their bid for Champions League glory against Real Madrid.

City will host the Spanish champions in the second leg of their last 16 tie on August 7.

Guardiola's side hold a 2-1 lead from the first meeting in Madrid in February.

City only have two Premier League games to play before the visit of Zinedine Zidane's men.

They were well below their best against Arsenal but Guardiola pledged to learn from that performance and is confident his team will be ready for Real.

"Part of the good work Arsenal have done, I give them a lot of credit for, what they did, how good they defended," Guardiola told reporters on Monday.

"We didn't do it properly. We had enough chances to score goals and we didn't do it. I just congratulate them, learn from this and prepare for Madrid. We move forward, it's forgotten.

"Now we are incredibly excited and incredibly optimistic about the game against Madrid, for the players we have.

"We know if we play at a decent level, higher than we played against Arsenal, we'll have our chance. If not, we'll be out."

Next season will be Guardiola's fifth at City, meaning he will have stayed at the club longer than his previous jobs at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

"I've never been five years in one club, to see if we will be able to maintain the levels that we have in the previous seasons," he said.

"In one world where everyone sacks everyone, for managers to keep doing the same job for a long time is so difficult. To be in a fifth season makes me so proud."

World cricket witnessed something unique in Cricket South Africa’s brainchild - 3TC Solidarity Cup - at SuperSport Park in Centurion on July 18. While 24 South African players participated in the one-off match involving three teams, Indian commentators turned their respective houses into commentary box as the likes of Deep Dasgupta (Kolkata), Sanjay Manjrekar (Mumbai), Irfan Pathan (Baroda) and Jatin Sapru (Delhi)&nbsp;gripped the Indian cricket fans with their take on the match in Hindi.

Not only these four but the entire production team of Star Sports joined in from different cities of India. Be it Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai or Mysuru, the entire team assembled to bring a unique format of cricket to brighten up the lives of cricket fans.&nbsp;

At the end, there were plaudits for each and every one who made the 3TC event possible. Both Hindi and English commentary were made available for viewers in what was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for cricket lovers.&nbsp;

As people say, extraordinary times require extraordinary measures to pull off something of a large scale and that is what 3TC witnessed.&nbsp;

“I don’t think something like that (virtual commentary in 3TC) was done before this. So technologically it was something huge that everyone pulled off. These are extraordinary times where you need extraordinary measures so in that perspective it was huge thing. And what I gathered from everyone is that viewing and listening experience on air was not bad,” former Indian cricketer turned broadcaster Deep Dasgupta told WION.&nbsp;

“Personally it was absolutely brilliant. There was some overlapping and audio glitches but it was normal as we were doing it for the first time. And naturally, people also understand the extraordinary times and what we are doing to bring back cricket to life,” Dasgupta added. &nbsp;

Another major development in the world of cricket comes in the postponement of T20 World Cup. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/planning-for-full-fledged-ipl-2020-most-likely-in-the-uae-brijesh-patel-314905">IPL Chairman Brijesh Patel has almost confirmed that IPL 2020&nbsp;will be heading to the UAE</a>. As more and more news surrounding <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl?page=1">IPL 2020</a> continues to flow, a big question remains whether the tournament will also follow the footsteps of the 3TC in relation to virtual commentary.

The event in South Africa was one-off but IPL will be of around 60 matches. Is it even possible to pull off something of a mountainous scale as IPL when it comes to commentating from home? Deep Dasgupta is of the view that it will definitely be challenging but not impossible but questions if 160 players can travel to the UAE then how will the other 15-20 commentators make a difference.&nbsp;

<div class="ui-state-default" contenteditable="false">
<div class="twitter-block" draggable="false">

“Virtual commentary during IPL might not be the first option but I guess it is an option somewhere in the pecking order. Technologically, it will be massive. Yes, there has to be some improvement if IPL thinks about virtual commentary. With practice, things will get better. If IPL happens in the UAE, then around 160 players will be travelling. So how can another 15-20 commentators affect the planning?,” Dasgupta explained.&nbsp;

Production scale is immense in the IPL. It can’t be even compared to other T20 tournaments in the world in terms of quality analysis, entertainment and depth. In a nutshell, IPL is blockbuster. But if the organisers go with the decision of sticking to virtual commentary, will it make a difference? In terms of quality, yes there will be a definite hit. While it is still an early stage, the BCCI might not take the risk of going ahead with virtual commentary as they would look to make the viewing experience as better as possible for fans watching on their TV sets or over the internet. &nbsp;

“You can never compare on-field commentary with off-field commentary. When you are on the field, you can contribute so much more. When we are off the field, we are seeing what others are seeing on television, so we can’t add more to that. Whereas when you are on the field, you pick up something what you see and start talking about it and then the cameraman can pick it up. And there is constant communication with the producers, directors and everyone associated with the broadcast. But then if are doing virtual commentary more then it will improve with time be it on technical aspect or sharing insights as a commentator,” the former India wicket-keeper explained.&nbsp;

While the news of IPL heading to the UAE has certainly taken the social media by storm, fans are still awaiting an official confirmation. IPL is all about experiencing world’s best T20 tournament, and commentators and presenters play a major role in fulfilling the expectations of viewers.&nbsp;Fans would be eager to watch their favourite franchises in action but they would also be looking forward to seeing their favourite commentators on the field lighting up the magic with their presence and voice.

I’m in Delhi, @IrfanPathan joins from Baroda, @sanjaymanjrekar from Mumbai @DeepDasgupta7 from Kolkata - @StarSportsIndia Broadcast team all over India - Everybody at home bringing you a live match from South Africa Wow wow wow! Join us at 2pm #3teamcricket pic.twitter.com/TZn5EnwLzN — Jatin Sapru (@jatinsapru) July 18, 2020 × At the end, there were plaudits for each and every one who made the 3TC event possible. Both Hindi and English commentary were made available for viewers in what was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for cricket lovers. As people say, extraordinary times require extraordinary measures to pull off something of a large scale and that is what 3TC witnessed. That was some effort 👏👏 Big shout out to the whole team for making it happen @StarSportsIndia @Sanjog_G #3TCricket pic.twitter.com/S1VUk8mDAf — Deep Dasgupta (@DeepDasgupta7) July 18, 2020 × “I don’t think something like that (virtual commentary in 3TC) was done before this. So technologically it was something huge that everyone pulled off. These are extraordinary times where you need extraordinary measures so in that perspective it was huge thing. And what I gathered from everyone is that viewing and listening experience on air was not bad,” former Indian cricketer turned broadcaster Deep Dasgupta told WION. “Personally it was absolutely brilliant. There was some overlapping and audio glitches but it was normal as we were doing it for the first time. And naturally, people also understand the extraordinary times and what we are doing to bring back cricket to life,” Dasgupta added. All set https://t.co/eMylbFoxlN pic.twitter.com/LCMDhLTnt7 — Deep Dasgupta (@DeepDasgupta7) July 18, 2020 × Another major development in the world of cricket comes in the postponement of T20 World Cup. IPL Chairman Brijesh Patel has almost confirmed that IPL 2020 will be heading to the UAE. As more and more news surrounding IPL 2020 continues to flow, a big question remains whether the tournament will also follow the footsteps of the 3TC in relation to virtual commentary. The event in South Africa was one-off but IPL will be of around 60 matches. Is it even possible to pull off something of a mountainous scale as IPL when it comes to commentating from home? Deep Dasgupta is of the view that it will definitely be challenging but not impossible but questions if 160 players can travel to the UAE then how will the other 15-20 commentators make a difference. Hats off to @StarSportsIndia to pull this one off! Hindi commentary on coverage coming from SA, with comms in Mumbai, Kolkata, Baroda & Delhi. Director in Mysore, producers again all over the place. Gold goes to the production team! Well done you guys!👏👏👏#3teamcricket — Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) July 18, 2020 × “Virtual commentary during IPL might not be the first option but I guess it is an option somewhere in the pecking order. Technologically, it will be massive. Yes, there has to be some improvement if IPL thinks about virtual commentary. With practice, things will get better. If IPL happens in the UAE, then around 160 players will be travelling. So how can another 15-20 commentators affect the planning?,” Dasgupta explained. Production scale is immense in the IPL. It can’t be even compared to other T20 tournaments in the world in terms of quality analysis, entertainment and depth. In a nutshell, IPL is blockbuster. But if the organisers go with the decision of sticking to virtual commentary, will it make a difference? In terms of quality, yes there will be a definite hit. While it is still an early stage, the BCCI might not take the risk of going ahead with virtual commentary as they would look to make the viewing experience as better as possible for fans watching on their TV sets or over the internet. ALSO READ: Planning for full-fledged IPL 2020, most likely in the UAE: Brijesh Patel “You can never compare on-field commentary with off-field commentary. When you are on the field, you can contribute so much more. When we are off the field, we are seeing what others are seeing on television, so we can’t add more to that. Whereas when you are on the field, you pick up something what you see and start talking about it and then the cameraman can pick it up. And there is constant communication with the producers, directors and everyone associated with the broadcast. But then if are doing virtual commentary more then it will improve with time be it on technical aspect or sharing insights as a commentator,” the former India wicket-keeper explained. While the news of IPL heading to the UAE has certainly taken the social media by storm, fans are still awaiting an official confirmation. IPL is all about experiencing world’s best T20 tournament, and commentators and presenters play a major role in fulfilling the expectations of viewers. Fans would be eager to watch their favourite franchises in action but they would also be looking forward to seeing their favourite commentators on the field lighting up the magic with their presence and voice.

Is virtual commentary in IPL 2020 possible? Deep Dasgupta explains

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been on the firing line following a series of costly goalkeeping blunders for the Red Devils. However, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Tuesday said the Spaniard is mentally strong enough to deal with the fierce criticism.

De Gea has been central to widespread criticism for over 18 months now for some of the glaring errors in front of the goal.

Solskjaer, speaking at his pre-match press conference, was determined to keep the focus on Wednesday's game against West Ham rather than the struggles of his goalkeeper.

"This is not going to become a David de Gea press conference," he said. "We're just going to stick together. We've got two games, so we're just going to focus on that one.

"David's mentally strong enough to know that his job is to perform in training the next day and then be ready for the games."

Premier League: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defends 'mentally strong' De Gea after errors

Former speed merchant Brett Lee reckons Australia's pace triumvirate would hold the key during the year-end home Test series against India and is keen to figure out how much the kookaburra ball swings without saliva Down Under.

Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood forms a fine pace attack for Australia.

With the ban on saliva due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the world's fastest bowlers wants the custodians of the game to come up with an "artificial substance" to maintain the balance between bat and ball.

"Playing at home obviously gives you that advantage, but that said I know that India will pack a full strength squad to tour Australia. I still believe if Australia is to win our bowlers hold the key," Lee told PTI in an exclusive interview.

The kookaburra seam is not as pronounced as Dukes or SG Tests balls and the flattening of seam coupled with ban on saliva will make it harder for bowlers of both teams.

"It will definitely change the way the game is played so we don't want to make it even harder for bowlers even more than it is currently is," said the 43-year-old Lee.

India's pace attack, which has been phenomenal in the past three years, has the capability of "knocking over any top order" in world cricket but it will again boil down to how much the ball swings.

"India have got some extremely good pace bowlers that are capable of knocking over any top order. Once again I think it comes down to how the ball will swing or not swing in different conditions (Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney)."

And that is precisely the reason why Lee won't mind if an artificial substance is allowed even though his answer to whether ball tampering should be legalised was an emphatic no.

"Essentially you do need saliva to keep the new ball shiny and also the old ball to reverse swing. Usually (fast bowlers) use less saliva on a new ball compared to the old one.

"Maybe they need to come up with some artificial substance that they can use," the holder of 310 Test wickets asserted.

The best part about Australian cricket teams have been their iconic captains who have set benchmarks, said Lee.

"Yes Australia have had some wonderful leaders which involves set the tone for the generations to follow. I was very lucky to play under two of my favourites in Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting," said Lee, referring to the likes of Ian Chappell, Allan Border and Mark Taylor who preceded them.

Does he feel that Tim Paine can earn the same kind of respect consistently in a change room that has powerhouse performers like Steve Smith and David Warner.

"I think Tim Paine has done a tremendous job and should be complimented for the way that he has led the side. Keeping in mind he's had a few dramas to deal with, he's still the right man for the job," Lee said.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, all cricket boards are going through financial stress and Cricket Australia is no different.

The speedster hoped that some normalcy will return in future.

"As any person in the workforce any time there is a pay cut that it definitely will affect them. Let's hope we get back to some form of normality as soon as possible."

Lee had watched the first Test between England and West Indies in Southampton and was very impressed with Caribbean skipper Jason Holder's performance in the first innings.

"There has been some wonderful performances by bowlers of both teams. In particular the skipper from the West Indies. Just goes to show that line length is so important."
