<p>About a fourth of SpiceJet's fleet has been grounded amid a string of weak quarterly results and fierce competition in the sector. The airline is scrambling to raise funds.</p>

<p>The fund infusion for SpiceJet has come at a time when Indian budget carriers are looking to take advantage of the vacuum left by Go First, a crisis-hit rival airline.</p>

<p>SpiceJet has said that it will issue shares, convertible securities or share warrants on a preferential basis to Singh. The deal will also open up credit facilities of 2.06 billion rupees (USD 25 million) under the government's emergency credit line guarantee scheme.</p>

<p>Singh, who is also SpiceJet's managing director, holds 50.6 per cent stake in the company.</p>

<p>"This investment will allow the airline to accelerate its growth plans and capture new opportunities in the market, grow its revenue and profits," Singh said in a press release.</p>

<p>In February this year, SpiceJet had announced plans to raise fresh capital of USD 300 million through issue of securities. It converted about USD 100 million in due into equity to an aircraft lessor.</p>

<h2><strong>Battle on&nbsp;many fronts</strong></h2>

<p>SpiceJet is also fighting some lessors. These lessors are seeking to de-register their aircraft and also to initiate bankruptcy proceedings against the airline. SpiceJet is also entangled in a legal battle with a former investor for dues that are worth USD 46 million.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Late on Tuesday, media reports also said the airline was under "enhanced surveillance" by India's aviation watchdog. The airline said it had not received any such communication from the regulator.</p>

<p>SpiceJet shares are down around 20% so far this year, while rival IndiGo is up 36%.</p>

<p>SpiceJet, India's low-cost carrier, has announced that it will expand its fleet by adding 10 Boeing 737 aircraft between September and October 2023, as per reports. The airline aims to accommodate the increasing passenger traffic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among the 10 planes, five will be Boeing 737 Max aircraft, although the exact cost was not disclosed.</p>

<p>According to the SpiceJet website as of June 2023, their fleet consisted of 91 aircraft. However, it is unclear whether this figure includes the 25 planes that were previously grounded.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Partnership with FTAI Aviation&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The airline is now focused on reviving its grounded fleet and has recently partnered with FTAI Aviation to lease 20 engines.&nbsp;</p>

<p>SpiceJet expects to resume services for the grounded planes in the near future.</p>

<p>The travel industry has experienced a significant rebound following the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to increased profitability for airline operators.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As a result, rival company IndiGo's Interglobe Aviation has also planned capacity expansions and increased orders to meet the rising demand for air travel.</p>

<p>The country’s airline SpiceJet mobilised its plan to revive 25 grounded aircraft. The airline has already mobilised around Rs 400 crore (4000 million) rupees towards getting its grounded fleet back in the air, which will further enhance its top line.</p>

India: SpiceJet plans to induct 10 Boeing 737 aircraft starting September

<p>At a&nbsp;time when airlines are&nbsp;shutting down, SpiceJet on Tuesday (May 23) announced a significant hike in the salary of its captains to Rs 7.5 lakhs or $9,068 for 75 hours of flying.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Gurugram-based aviation giant announced the hike on the occasion of its 18th anniversary. The hike was applicable from May 16, 2023, the carrier added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Along with this, the airline also announced a tenure-linked monthly loyalty reward for captains of up to Rs 1 lakh ($1,209) per month which would be over or above their monthly remuneration.</p>

<p>Back in November, the salaries of captains were Rs 7 lakhs or $8,463 for 80 hours of flying.</p>

<p>Similarly, a hike in salaries of trainers (DE, TRI) and first officers was also announced.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Stay committed to serving customers</strong></p>

<p>Earlier Ajay Singh, the chairman told employees that the airline planned of initiating a process of reviving its grounded planes with $50 million in funds received from the ECGLS scheme and from its internal accruals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by Economic Times, Singh said, "There is large investor interest in our logistics business. Leading UK-based international conglomerate SRAM and MRAM Group have already committed a $100 million investment in SpiceXpress. Both SpiceJet and SpiceXpress have great potential and will complement each other well."</p>

<p>He also urged the employees to remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of service to its customers, looking forwards to many coming years ahead.&nbsp;</p>

A spokesperson from the airline said that it has a strict policy for consuming food inside the cockpit which is adhered to by all flight crew, according to a report by India Today on Thursday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per India's aviation rules, pilots and crew are allowed to have food, and beverages inside the cockpit but under strict guidelines.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The two-month audit was initiated after DGCA, whilst conducting spot checks found that unqualified and inadequate engineering personnel were greenlighting the flying of planes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The audit seeks to check the equipment used by the airline engineering personnel, their quality assurance system, the roster of aircraft in the air and grounded due to lack of spare parts, the hangars, stores and the maintenance control centre.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, emphasis will be given to gauging the quality of manpower available as there have been reports of increased engineering negligence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reportedly, IndiGo's maintenance crew had gone the whistleblower route recently and exposed the low-cost carrier for a lackadaisical attitude towards the safety of the aircraft.</p>

<p>"The operators to whom you have leased your aircraft are not following standard procedure of maintenance. For the past four days technical staff are on strike and still they are flying the aircraft without proper maintenance and even they are deferring the scheduled maintenance" a letter to Airbus from the maintenance crew read.</p>

<p>The domestic airline further noted that passengers were safely disembarked once the aircraft returned to Delhi's airport.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The airline said on Twitter: "While passing 5,000 feet, the crew noticed smoke in the cabin." A video of the same went viral on social media platforms where passengers can be seen sitting amid the smoke-filled cabin.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So far, the reason behind the smoke is not known but citing sources, India-based news agencies reported that a preliminary probe indicate that an oil leak in the left engine caused the smoke.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The airline also did not disclose how many passengers were on board Saturday's flight. However, it said the plane had landed "safely" and that an alternative flight had been "immediately arranged" for travellers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The ERV chased the bikers till Mehrauli, which is quite a distance. We are evaluating all the footage from CCTV cameras from the flyover to the place in Mehrauli, and are in the process of identifying the accused," the DCP said, reported The Indian Express.</p>

<p>Arya also said that the registration number of the bikes have been noted down by the ERV officials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A SpiceXpress-led consortium, which includes drone maker Throttle Aerospace, was granted permission to operate drones beyond the visual sight of the operator on a trial basis, the airlines operator said in an email.<br />
It did not specify when it will begin the trials.</p>

<p>India's lockdown, the world's biggest and strictest when it began, triggered a surge in demand for home delivery of household goods, food and medicines as the coronavirus crisis deepened. The government has since eased some of the restrictions, including passenger flights.</p>

It caused confusion and Pakistani ATC misunderstood SpiceJet as `IA` and misinterpreted it as the Indian Army or India Airforce. When Pakistani ATC reported about an aircraft coming from India with IA code they immediately launched their F-16s to intercept the Indian plane.</p>

<p>After the confusion was sorted out, the Pakistani fighters escorted the SpiceJet out of Pakistan airspace till they entered Afghanistan, confirmed a DGCA official. "At the time when Pakistani F-16s were flying around their flight, all passengers were asked to shut their windows and maintain silence," the passengers told ANI.</p>

<p>The second pilot, Captain Vikram Singh had called out bleeds 'on'&nbsp;during after takeoff checklist.</p>

<p>"However, bleeds were still in off position which resulted into pressurisation failure during a climb," the DGCA said in its suspension letter, adding that the action jeopardised the safety of the aircraft and its occupants.</p>

<p>"In exercise of the powers delegated under Clause (a) of the Sub-Rule (3) of Rule 19 of the Aircraft Rules, 1937, the undersigned hereby suspend the license of Captain Sunil Mehta and Captain Vikram Singh for a period of four months from the date of the incident," the civil aviation watchdog said.</p>

<p>Earlier on September 23, the DGCA had issued a show-cause notice to the pilots giving them a time period of 15 days to explain why action should not be taken against them.</p>

<p>Low-cost airlines IndiGo and SpiceJet are set to start their partial domestic operations from Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) Airport from September 5, the GMR-led Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) said on Monday.</p>

<p>While Indigo will shift a portion of its operations from T2 to T3, SpiceJet will shift all of its domestic flights operating from T2 to T3.</p>

<p>Post the shift, SpiceJet flights SG 8000 to SG 8999 and IndiGo flights 6E 5000 to 6E 5999 will operate out of T3. IndiGo flights 6E 2000 to 6E 2999 will operate from T2. The operations of SpiceJet and IndiGo at T1 will continue as before.</p>

<p>"Shifting of some domestic flights of IndiGo and all SpiceJet flights from T2 to T3 will help in easing the pressure of fast-growing passenger traffic to carry out the capacity enhancement work of T2 effectively and efficiently," said DIAL`s Chief Operating Officer Videh Kumar Jaipuriar.</p>

<p>At present. GoAir fully and SpiceJet and IndiGo partially operate their respective domestic flights from T2 while Air India, Vistara and Air Asia India operate completely out of T3.</p>

<p>A total of 184 flights now operate from T3. With the proposed shifting, the number of flights at T3 will go up to 240 which include 24 IndiGo and 32 SpiceJet flights.</p>

<p>The move will result in a reduction of passenger load at T2 by up to 27 per cent which will enable the airport operator to enhance the passenger capacity of T2.</p>

<p>Post completion of capacity enhancement of T2, the terminal will be able to handle 18 million passengers per annum (MPPA), up from the current 15 MPPA. This will further enhance the passenger comfort and experience, DIAL said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>
