South Africa will become the first African nation to introduce shared parental leave following a high court ruling that both parents must have the right to time off after the birth of their child or if they adopt a child. The judgement allows parents to choose how to divide four months of parental leave between them, The Guardian reported on Friday (Nov 10).
Politicians now have two years to refine and develop the law, the report said.

Campaigners hailed the judgement as a "significant milestone."

Till now, mothers were given a leave of four months while fathers/partners were allowed a leave of a maximum of 10 days.

“It raises the bar on leave for parents in a wonderful way. I’m thrilled our law is becoming more in line with our constitution,” Wessel van den Berg from gender equality organisation Equimundo said.

Berg, who is the MenCare officer at the organisation, said that the judgement highlighted a need for further reforms to align this policy (shared parental leave) with the reality of life in South Africa.

Nkululeko Mbuli, a communications strategist at Embrace (a social movement for mothers), told the publication that while this leave was a move in the right direction, it still shortchanged mothers.

Mbuli said that the judgement placed the responsibility for leaving with individuals rather than building a caring system. She pointed out that unemployed those working in insecure employment were left out.

Parental leaves across Africa range from 8-14 weeks. However, some countries only allow two to three days of leave.

South Africa to become first African nation to introduce shared parental leave: Report

South Africa will play Australia in the second semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup next week. The Proteas have never won the World Cup or the T20 World Cup and have traditionally been referred to as chokers. They now have the opportunity to go all the way and emulate their Rugby team which won the World Cup last month. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore though isnt convinced they are the real deal.

ODI WC: South Africa warm up for Australia S/F with a successful run chase

South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma suffered a hamstring injury during their last ODI World Cup 2023 league match against Afghanistan on November 10 in Ahmedabad. With the injury, Bavuma could very well be in doubt for the the semifinal against Australia on November 15 or 16. The South African skipper, however, insists that it (injury) is going to be fine.

"Obviously my leg is sore - don't know to what extent - but it's going be have to be fine [for the semifinal]," Bavuma said after the win over Afghanistan. "Obviously I had that option of coming off, but I think as much as it was our last group-stage game, probably it didn't have a big bearing in terms of the play-off.

"But I still wanted to be out there with the guys. It was an opportunity for me to get some time in the middle [batting], so I didn't want to let that go. But also to keep leading the guys, keep marshalling out in the field, [and] keep strengthening those relationships with the bowlers. It was a bit risky, staying on the field - but that's what I felt was right at that time," he added.

Bavuma left the field nine balls into the match while fielding but came back after four overs, only to field gingerly. Had he stayed out, he would have had to wait significant amount of time before coming on to bat in the second innings or until five wickets were down.

The skipper, nonetheless, batted at his usual position - opening the innings with Quinton de Kock and scored 23 runs as he added 64 runs for the first wicket with de Kock in chase of 245. This was South Africa's second win in the ODI World Cup 2023 while chasing. They had also won against Pakistan but by just a wicket and had lost against Netherlands and India while chasing.

Bavuma took pride in the five-wicket win against Afghanistan and said: "[There was a] lot of understanding as to how we can go about that chase. Fantastic knock by Rassie, who took ownership of that innings, and guys batted around him."

South Africa finished the league stage with seven wins and two losses in nine games.

South Africa on Monday (Nov 6) announced that it would recall its diplomats from Israel in a bid to express concerns over the upsurge of violence in the West Bank.

"The South African government has decided to withdraw all its diplomats in Tel Aviv for consultation," Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, a minister in the president's office, told a press briefing without providing further details.

The South African government also said that the position of the Israeli ambassador to the country was becoming "more and more untenable", condemning the diplomat for making "disparaging remarks" about people denouncing Israel.

South Africa has been an advocate for peace in the Middle East and has also strongly supported the Palestinian cause, linking it to its struggle against apartheid.

Recalling of diplomats, normal practice: Foreign Minister

Dubbing the return of diplomats a 'normal practice', Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor stated that the recall was to determine "whether there is any potential for you to be of assistance and whether the continued relationship is actually able to be sustained in all terms."

"We are... extremely concerned at the continued killing of children and innocent civilians in the Palestinian territories and we believe the nature of the response by Israel has become one of collective punishment," Pandor told a press conference on Monday, as she hosted her Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba.

"We felt it important that we do signal the concern of South Africa while continuing to call for a comprehensive cessation (of hostilities)."

Earlier, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni had accused Israeli ambassador Eliav Belotsercovsky, of making derogatory remarks about South Africans, including members of government, "who are speaking against the holocaust being committed by the Israeli government".

She said that the foreign ministry had been instructed "to convey the South African government's displeasure with the ambassador" through diplomatic channels.

"We felt it important that we should call the ambassador in," added Pandor.

"There seems to be a strange practice among some ambassadors in South Africa, that they can just say what they like... I don't know if it's because it's an African country and they disrespect us but it's something that we should not tolerate."

India is unstoppable at the ODI World Cup as the men in blue hammer South Africa by 243 runs in a top-of-the-table clash to extend their winning streak to eight matches. Virat Kohli scored his 49th ODI Century on his 35th birthday and equalled the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

ODI WC: India thrash South Africa by 243 runs in a top-of-the-table clash

South Africa's bid to win a first-ever World Cup is on shaky ground after an absolute mauling against India. The hosts went out of their comfort zone by batting first in Kolkata and challenged South Africa's mighty batting unit to come up with the goods while chasing. India's bowlers opened old wounds as the Proteas mentally disintegrated in the face of an extremely challenging target and some tight bowling. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore believes South Africa's approach was completely wrong with no batter showing any sort of intent.

ODI WC: Why do South Africa choke during run chases?

Hosts India are marching towards a third world title with South Africa brushed aside with ease in Kolkata. India's bowling unit once again strangled the opposition with Ravindra Jadeja the pick of the bowlers with a maiden five-wicket haul in World Cups. India have shown faith in five frontline bowlers after the injury to Hardik Pandya and it is time to ask the big question. Is this India's best bowling attack of all time? 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore thinks so.

World Cup 2023: Is this India's greatest bowling attack in ODIs?

Virat Kohli has equaled Sachin Tendulkar's mark of 49 ODI centuries after a battling 101* against South Africa in Kolkata. Tendulkar got to the mark in his 451st innings while Kohli has reached the mark in 175 fewer innings. Kohli got to the mark on his 35th birthday and 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore believes this was one of his better hundreds considering the tricky nature of the Eden Gardens pitch.

Former South Africa batter AB de Villiers is confident of Proteas 'going all the way this time' in the ODI World Cup 2023 as they take on unbeaten India on November 5 for a place in the semifinals. South Africa are in red-hot form with six wins in seven games and currently at number two on the points table behind India. Their only loss came against Netherlands.

"At the moment the batting order is really good all round, and there is an all-round belief in each other and the bowlers," de Villiers said as reported by the ICC's official cricketworldcup.com website.

"Everyone that was being doubted at the start of the tournament are starting to show form so, all in all, things are coming together and hopefully we will go all the way," added the former Proteas star.

AB de Villiers, known as arguably one of the best batters ever to play for South Africa, was also full of praise for opening batter Quinton de Kock.

de Kock, in the ongoing World Cup, has notched up 545 runs so far in seven innings - the most for any batter in this edition, along with four centuries as well.

"He has always been very special to me since the very first day I watched him play," de Villiers said.

"Quinnie showed that he was just a class above anyone else."

"I have never really seen anyone hit the ball on the up consistently like he does and he has always maintained that form."

"Yes, one or two failures here or there, but he has always had the ability to bounce back."

"I think it is the best I have ever seen him play in a World Cup," de Villiers added.

de Kock now also holds the record for most runs scored by a South African in one edition of the World Cup as well, going past de Villiers' record of 482 runs set in 2015 edition.

"He certainly seems to be at home, he has got a point to prove and he looks calm while he is doing it."

"South Africa needs him to give us that solid start as often as possible as it is really good for the middle over if we get that solid start," said de Villiers.

South Africa have all but assured themselves of a semi-final berth with a 190-run win over New Zealand in Pune. The Proteas have won six out of their seven matches but will face their toughest test yet when they face hosts India in their next clash on Sunday.

World Cup 2023: Will India be South Africa's toughest test

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson remains on the sidelines due to injury and is unlikely to fare against South Africa in the World Cup match, announced the Blackcaps on Wednesday (Nov 1).

Williamson suffered a thumb injury in the match against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, earlier in the tournament. The NZ batter was completing a run when a throw from the deep hit his left hand, forcing him to retire hurt on 78. A day later, the X-ray scans confirmed that he suffered a fracture.

"Williamson has batted in the nets the last two days but has been ruled out of a return to match action tomorrow. He will be assessed again ahead of the side’s next match against Pakistan," read the statement by Blackcaps.

After Williamson's injury, the NZ team management had flown in Tom Blundell as his cover. NZ coach Gary Stead said at the time that he expects the 33-year-old to have a role during the later stages of the tournament.

“Kane is clearly a massive part of our side and a world-class player and captain - so we’ll look to give him every opportunity we can to return in the tournament.”

Comeback cut short for Williamson

Notably, Williamson's thumb injury came in the comeback match for him after he had been sidelined for an extended period. The NZ veteran suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during the first match for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL), earlier this year.

In Williamson's absence, Tom Latham will continue to lead the Kiwis. The stand-in captain has done well in Williamson's absence as the 2019 WC finalists find themselves in the third spot in the points table.

The match against South Africa assumes importance for the Kiwis as they will be coming on the back of two consecutive defeats. A win would all but secure a space in the semifinals while a loss might complicate matters.

World Cup 2023: Kane Williamson remains sidelined for South Africa clash, to be assessed for Pak game

Pakistan cricket team's woes continue to accumulate in ODI World Cup 2023 as it now has been penalised for slow over-rate against South Africa against whom they lost a thriller by one wicket. The Men in Green have been fined 20 per cent of their match fees after being found four-over short in the stipulated time to complete the overs.

As per the ICC Code of Conduct, the players are liable for five per cent cut of their match fee for every over short and hence the 20 per cent fine for the Pakistan team. The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Richard Kettleborough and Pakistan skipper Babar Azam accepted.

With four consecutive losses in six games, Pakistan are now at the brink of exit from the ODI World Cup 2023. The 1992 World Cup winner had started their campaign with two wins in a row but then ran into India for their first loss of the tournament and never really recovered from there.

Chasing 271, South Africa were 235/5 in 37th over before Pak bowlers displayed precision and skill to get four wickets and leave South Africa 11 runs short of the target with last pair on the crease. Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi, however, held their nerve and guided South Africa home for their fifth win of the tournament.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was visibly distraught after the game and agreed that they have missed the chance to stay in the tournament.

With four points after two wins and four losses, Pakistan are now at the sixth place on the points table. Their next three ODI World Cup games are against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and England.

ODI World Cup 2023: Pakistan fined for THIS reason after one-wicket loss against South Africa

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam wasn't pleased after Mohammed Nawaz bowled a short, angling towards leg delivery to South Africa's Keshav Maharaj who hit the ball for four to win the match for his team. South Africa were nine down at the time and needed four runs to win and Maharaj's hit towards the square-leg boundary got them over the line.

Babar was seen shouting on the bowler after the winning hit by Maharaj. He also animatedly told Nawaz that he had to bowl on the off side and not on leg side. Have a look at the video here:

ODI World Cup 2023: WATCH | Pakistan skipper Babar Azam SHOUTS at Mohammad Nawaz after SA hit winning four

South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma conceded that the team doesn't have a blueprint when it comes to chasing after their nervy one wicket win over Pakistan in ODI World Cup 2023. This was the second time in six games South Africa were chasing and despite being 235/5 with about 14 overs left in chase of 271, they just about managed to get over the line. Notably, they had lost their previous game chasing to Netherlands by 38 runs.

Speaking after the game, Bavuma said: "It was a nail-biting finish. Obviously, if you are a South African fan, you're a little bit happier at the outcome."

"We can't say with conviction that we do have the blueprint when we are chasing. We're going to get into this situation again, that I do know, and we obviously want to show a lot more of a clinical display with the bat."

"With the batting, there's obviously been pressure with us chasing, and we haven't done well to rectify that. We'll obviously have conversations, but it will be easier now to have those conversations with the win. But it was due to our doing that we allowed the game to get to that point."

"It's something that we've spoken about, it's obviously something that has been thrown about," he added.

South Africa now sit at the top of the points table with five wins in six games and they have won four of those games while batting first. The Proteas have been sensational while setting the target, cross 300 each time and 400+ once when batting first.

"We obviously have a blueprint when batting first, and we've shown that in terms of the scores we have been able to post," added Bavuma.

Against Pakistan, SA lost four wickets for just 25 runs before Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi held their nerve and took their team home. Bavuma said that the guys in the pressure situation would need to speak up in team meetings.

"The guys who were there in the pressure situations [would need to] truly speak out as to what they were thinking in terms of emotions, in terms of their game-plans," Bavuma added.

The Proteas are well placed to make it to the top four and despite their two out of the next three games being against New Zealand and India.

ODI World Cup 2023: South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma concedes 'no chase blueprint' post nervy win vs Pakistan

Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan insisted Thursday that his under-performing teammates believe "miracles can happen" as the former champions enter a "do-or-die" battle to rescue their faltering World Cup campaign.

After starting brightly with wins over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka, the 1992 champions have been well beaten by India and Australia before being humiliated by neighbours Afghanistan last time out.

On Friday, they face another test of their resources against free-scoring South Africa who have four wins in five games and have shrugged off their shock loss to the Netherlands.

"We have under-performed in all three departments -- batting, bowling and fielding," said Shadab.

"We have not played good cricket but have bounced back from such situations."

With four group games to play, Pakistan can still make the semi-finals but there is little margin for error.

However, as well as victory on Friday, they also need to improve their -0.40 net run-rate which could prove to be the tie-breaker in the race for semi-final spots.

"If you have belief, miracles happen," said Shadab, the deputy to skipper Babar Azam.

"We have not played like we were playing before the World Cup but from tomorrow we have to start a winning streak."

He added: "When you are in a do-or-die position then I think the pressure is less because you have nothing to lose."

Shadab has been one of many in the Pakistan squad who has yet to fully fire.

The 25-year-old leg-spinner has just two wickets at 90.00 and scored 74 runs in three outings.

He was dropped for the match with Australia before being recalled to face Afghanistan.

"When you don't do well the criticism is valid but there are ups and downs in a player's performance so I am confident that I will improve," said Shadab who scored 40 in the losing cause against Afghanistan.

Shadab insists the shock eight-wicket defeat to Afghanistan in a game also played at Chennai is now behind them.

Victory, he insists, will hopefully quieten the criticism which has grown steadily since the eighth loss in eight World Cup meetings to India.

"I always tell the players that if you are going to a tournament like this, you have to cut off from the social media," said Shadab.

"If you perform then everyone says that 'he is doing so well', but when you are not performing then the same people will say 'he is not good enough'."

He added: "It's the mentality that when someone is not in the team, then they are the best and when someone is in the team they are the worst."

Meanwhile, fast bowler Hasan Ali has become the latest Pakistan player to fall ill and will miss Friday's game.

"Hasan is unavailable for the game against South Africa," said a Pakistan Cricket Board statement.

"He is recovering well and will be given rest to recover ahead of the remaining games.

ENG vs SA head to head: World Cup 2023 England vs South Africa date, time, squads, playing XI, live streaming

Netherlands completed a famous 38-run win over South Africa to add further intrigue to the pool stage at the Cricket World Cup. Two days after Afghanistan had humbled holders England, the in-form South Africans were well beaten by the Dutch in a rain-affected game in Dharamsala that was reduced to 43 overs a side.

Netherlands stun South Africa by 38 runs in Dharamsala

The Netherlands created a huge upset in the ODI World Cup 2023 with a 38-run win over South Africa on October 17 in Dharamsala. Thanks to skipper Scott Edwards' 78 off 69, the Netherlands were able to post a modest score of 245 despite being six wickets down for 110-odd runs.

While chasing, South Africa never looked in command with wickets tumbling continuously as they got all-out for 207. The game was a historic one for the Dutchmen who got their third win in all the ODI World Cups they have played. Here are some of the top moments from the game: Horror start for Netherlands Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada struck early for South Africa, taking three wickets to leave the Netherlands reeling three down for 43 inside 11 overs. While Rabada dismissed Vikramjit Singh and Bas de Leede, Jansen took the wicket of Max O'Dowd. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) × Middle-over collapse The Dutch innings didn't seem to go anywhere after early jolts as they kept losing wickets and the scorecard ready 112/6 by the end of the 27th over which soon became 140/7 in the 34th over. The Proteas were looking at a target of something between 170-190 before the tables turned. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) × Dutch counter-attack Supported by Roelof van der Merwe (29) and Aryan Dutt (23 off 9), Edwards launched a brilliant rearguard assault against the Proteas as the last three Dutch wickets added 105 runs in about 9 overs. Edwards top-scored in the game with 78 off just 69 balls, hitting 10 fours and one six. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) × Poor start for South Africa Chasing the modest total, South Africa never looked comfortable as they lost the first three wickets in quick succession, going from 36/0 to 42/3 in the space of 15 balls. The Dutch bowlers were precise with their lines and lengths and able to strangulate the SA batters. The Proteas could never really recover from there as they soon lost half the side for just 89 runs in 18.5 overs. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) × David Miller's wicket Despite being in a precarious position, David Miller was on the crease and SA were still hopeful. Logan van Beek, however, sent down a ripper to rattle the stumps of Miller and kill any hopes for South Africa. The chase didn't last long after Miller was back in the hut and the Proteas eventually were all out for 207 - losing the game by 38 runs. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) × South Africa next play England on October 21 in Mumbai who also suffered an upset against Afghanistan recently in the ODI World Cup 2023.
