Although Twitter does not yet have an edit button, WhatsApp is expected to implement one in the near future. In the beta version of the software, the messaging app was testing the edit button. Just 15 minutes before the Texas gunman entered the classroom where the shooting happened, he had posted a plan of what he would do once he enters the school.

A man has been arrested in the US on Sunday for posting a school shooting threat on social media. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, 18-year-old Corey Anderson, in his social media post, wrote, “Hey Siri, directions to the nearest school.” In the post, Anderson had also shared his photos in a tactical-style vest and weapons, which looked like a handgun and rifle. "This type of threat is unacceptable. This man intentionally instilled fear into our community as a sick joke, but be warned, this is no laughing matter," Sheriff Chad Chronister said.

After widespread panic on social media, India has withdrawn a warning about not to share photocopies of the Aadhaar card on Sunday, media reports said. The national biometric identity card, which is called Aadhaar card, has a unique number linked to an individual's face, eyes and fingerprints scan. It has been envisaged to block theft and provide the benefits of the India's welfare schemes to the beneficiary directly in the bank account. Two days after issuing, the warning was withdrawn by the press information bureau (PIB). The release about warning was published to apprise people that an edited Aadhaar card can be misused. It is being withdrawn "in view of the possibility of misinterpretation", PIB said.

Is it still wild west? US school shooting gunman shared intentions on social media before attack

Last week was historic in the space of social media. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, announced that he would purchase Twitter, the micro-blogging site that he has used for years to promote his interests and construct his public image. He said in a statement “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated”

While the famous First Amendment Right appears straightforward on paper, its interpretation has been a source of contention among Americans since the rule was ratified. Because it's such a complicated and nuanced topic, it's understandable that many people are unsure what "free speech" actually protects. This article tries to explain how practical the promise of establishing Free Speech on Twitter is and also digs deep into the business impact that can take place after this historic acquisition.

Many people are echoing Musk's "public square" or "town square" argument to demand freedom of expression on all social media arguing that any speech that occurs in a public arena qualifies for First Amendment protection. Many have blamed that Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google and YouTube are suffocating free expression by shutting down accounts that encourage violence or propagate misinformation, including that of former President Donald Trump's personal account.

The above is an output of ‘sentiment analysis’ done for the texts that appeared on Twitter during the period April-May 2022. The percentage of positive comments is 16.30% and negative is 13.77%

Key to note is the unusual positive sentiment from countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia showing people’s angst against authoritarian governments who use the platform to track opponents and spread disinformation. The negative comments largely focused on how an elite white man (Musk) who is detached from real issues like Apartheid, can never take a real stand for suppressed people with his promise of “Free Speech”.

Another analytical output is the word cloud. It is a basic but effective visual representation object for text processing that displays the most frequently used words in larger, bolder letters and with varied colors. The lesser the importance of a term, the smaller it is.

As is evident from the above image, words such as ‘Elite’, ‘White’ ‘Community’ etc. were predominant- reinforcing the sentiment analysis negative comments’ theme.

From the sentiment score and the word cloud it is evident that there is polarised perception on Musk’s Free Speech, almost equal numbers either side showing that there is no bias towards a particular sentiment.

What does it mean to have freedom of speech?

With some exceptions, speech in a traditional or designated public forum is protected. The right to use some inflammatory terms and phrases to convey political ideas is a part of freedom of speech. However, a person's right to express himself freely in a private setting, such as a store or on a company-run social media site, is not protected by the Constitution. Because they are publicly discussing their thoughts online in those venues, many users may consider their favorite social networks to be public forums.

However, courts have decided that social media platforms are private and that hosting other people's speech does not make them public forums. In reality, if the government tried to restrict Facebook or Twitter's ability to decide what content is indeed allowed on their platforms, it would be infringing on those firms' First Amendment rights.

Free speech means different things to different people

Twitter is utilized by people all across the world, and different nations have different free speech laws. Only 43% of people in all countries support legal protection for words that are insulting to minorities, while 39% support banning statements that are offensive to their religion or beliefs. Tolerance for statements supporting same-sex partnerships ranges from nearly universal approval (91%) in Denmark and Sweden to less than a third in Pakistan (27%) compared to only 16% and 18% in Turkey and Kenya respectively.

Musk's problem will be dealing with tweets from every other country on the planet, none of which guarantees free speech as vigorously as the United States. The European Union has warned him that new laws forbidding disinformation will be imposed on Twitter. Musk will need to think hard on what to do with Moscow, Tehran, and Kabul, all of which use Twitter to spread anti-US propaganda without reciprocity. These governments are all staunch anti-free-speech absolutists who, if given the chance, would silence all but their ruling classes around the world.

On the other hand, what to do about US foes on Twitter may be a true problem. This has previously been pointed out by Musk's detractors, including Jeff Bezos who indicated that the world's richest man might not be as principled as a free-speech absolutist when it comes to China. Beijing utilizes Twitter to spread its propaganda and perspectives but censors Twitter and does not accept any alternative viewpoints on Weibo. Most governments' preferred weapons of choice these days are words, so handing Beijing the one-way megaphone of Twitter is akin to handing your opponent your guns in a hot conflict.

Musk’s track record

Musk himself has minimal tolerance for speech that is unpleasant to him or to his companies or those that reflect employee criticism of the workplace (as evident via his tweets, public speeches, and regulations at the firms that he leads). Musk has a lengthy history of censoring or penalizing anyone who publicly criticizes a project or practice at Tesla Inc. or SpaceX. Nondisclosure agreements and arbitration clauses must be signed by employees to prevent them from suing their company in court. Hundreds of Tesla employees have complained of racist, sexist, other sorts of harassment, discrimination, and unsafe working conditions while under Musk's leadership. Many have also claimed retaliation as a result of speaking up about issues.

Meanwhile, Musk publicly mocks others on Twitter, with more than 80 million followers and a fan base that he can enrage, from a local health official during the early days of the pandemic to Twitter's current CEO, Parag Agrawal.

Twitter beyond free speech

Despite having a far less user base than other leading social media platforms, many small businesses and brands are particularly successful on Twitter. Content makers use the platform to grow their fan base. However, the site as it currently stands lacks many features that draw businesses to sites like Facebook, which is a more seller-friendly platform. Twitter was started in 2006, and by 2010, it had a user base of 54 million people. There will be around 400 million users in 2021. Facebook and YouTube are behemoths in comparison. With an estimated 2.8 billion users, Facebook is quickly catching up to YouTube, which has 2.3 billion users. WhatsApp has a user base of 2 billion people. Instagram has one billion users, TikTok has 800 million, and Snapchat has 300 million. Size is an important factor when the company decides to drive advertising revenues and derive monetisation.

Going forward, Musk buying over Twitter should encourage businesses and entrepreneurs to join the platform even more. Musk is an ardent capitalist and will bring more business-friendly features to Twitter, so the platform is going to witness a deluge of corporates in its user base.

Musk’s track record Musk himself has minimal tolerance for speech that is unpleasant to him or to his companies or those that reflect employee criticism of the workplace (as evident via his tweets, public speeches, and regulations at the firms that he leads). Twitter beyond free speech Despite having a far less user base than other leading social media platforms, many small businesses and brands are particularly successful on Twitter. WATCH WION LIVE HERE ×

Twitter and Musk: Freedom of speech and beyond

Just weeks after finalising a $44 billion deal to buy social media platform Twitter, Elon Musk looks tempted to throw in the towel. What's the reason? He blames it on spam bots.

What is the first thing you do when you wake up? Do you soak in the quiet mornings? A glass of lemon water?
For me my friends - it's a tall, cold drink of Instagram posts. After all, I need to catch up! I need to see that 10th pet post, don't I? I need to see the recycled memes and I need to see the ‘much-needed vacation’ posts. I need to, you know? Only I don't. Now that got me thinking. What is this information dump doing to us? Is this sensory overload impacting our functioning? It is.

Sensory overload
Let me begin with a clarification. Sensory overload, is when one or more of our senses receive more input than they can process. And even though - anyone can experience it, it is more common and severe in those with other sensory processing disorders. So, not a term to be thrown around lightly. (Remember when OCD was casually used as a synonym for ‘oh! I am soooo organised’ ?)
That being said, we all at some point can experience it and probably have. One of the most common forms that we do experience it in is - information overload. And also, the focus of this read. One sense at a time, people. Bear with me as I try not to overwhelm you with a read that focuses on how overwhelming information consumption can be.

Maybe it started sometime after the invention of printing or sometime during the cognitive revolution. But definitely, there was a time when our collective zeitgeist was altered. It only got more saturated as time progressed. With this renewed focus on quick information sources. Apps that can give you the summary for an entire book in under 60 seconds. 10-second vignettes for entertainment. Apps to read you your affirmations in the morning while you get ready in the morning for work - stuffing the breakfast sandwich with one hand, stuffing your work bag with the other all while catching up with the headlines. But what did we truly retain in this ordeal? Anxiety, irritability, light and sound sensitivity, a spike in excitement levels - feeling all around overwhelmed - this may just be your mind trying to tell you to hit pause. It’s not an uncommon phenomenon. It’s not new. But it is often disregarded.

Cognitive fallout
How much can the mind retain? How does the brain filter out the noise? You probably didn't need a study on the numbing effects of social media, information overload on our brain, and the fatigue it brings with it - but there is - plenty of them! ( talk about information dump). Isn't opening a social media app analogous to opening floodgates? An excessive amount of social media activity exhausts the brain causing it to slow down. That would explain why you went from your bedroom to the car and somehow miraculously drove yourself all the way to work but yet cannot recall all the steps. Are we at our very core just machines with a consciousness? Is this the matrix?

In stark contrast to what hustle culture propagates - multitasking and a gung-ho approach to life is too heavy a foot on the productivity pedal and accelerates cortisol, stress, and adrenaline levels. You can only imagine what coming down from such a high would feel like. It's a crash. Accompanied with brain fog and scrambled thoughts. Not one that can ever be good in the long run. Perhaps it's time to revisit the rabbit and turtle fable. Slow and steady, all the way.

Privilege and the choice to disconnect
And here is where I thought I had cracked the code - a digital detox! Only I hadn't. To no one’s surprise.
How practical is it to disconnect? Can we afford to? Do we not as a people - who have been granted the choice and the resources - have a responsibility to not be insufferable, ignorant, and oblivious? We do.
Also, how do we tackle the FoMo that comes with it? Glad you asked!
Turns out that there is something known as the FoMo scale. Studies have found nil to moderate effects of digital detox on the reduction of FOMO scores.
A 2019 study by the University of Otago, New Zealand found that people with mild-to-moderate anxiety and depression symptoms were able to improve their sleep quality significantly. The same study also recorded an improvement in overall mental well-being after a 7-day digital detox. Wait! So, you can unplug and .... be .. just fine?
Now of course a 7-day digital detox may not be a practical choice for most of us. On that my fellow girls, guys, and non-binaries, I'd like to say do what you have to. But do it intentionally. Take in information. But mindfully. A digital detox can help rewire your brain to focus on what is important. On a single task. A digital detox has a lot of definitions. Whatever you choose to go with, it is not an ambassadorial event. It's just a period of abstinence from ubiquitous electronic devices and social media, special features, the barrage of articles, branded content, and instant messaging. The list is long. Unless you have hundreds of dollars to shell out for a dip in sensory deprivation tanks - it will have to start with a life audit. See how much time you’re spending on each of these. Identity what invokes the most stress and worry. Start with a half an hour break a day.

And as is the case with everything else in life - soon you will figure out what works for you.

Balance is key. And tuning out - is okay!
