Eddie Cook, a witness interviewed by the local ABC affiliate KOAT, described the chaotic scene, with people running and screaming as gunshots rang out.

The 31-year-old suspect Masanori Aoki is believed to be the eldest son of the speaker of the city assembly in Nakano, Nagano Prefecture.&nbsp;

Aoki allegedly shot&nbsp;a police officer and then barricaded himself in the city official's house and remained inside the residence after allegedly stabbing a woman to death and shooting two policemen. However, the reason behind the killings is still to be ascertained.&nbsp;

According to local media reports, a masked man carrying what appeared to be a hunting rifle and a knife, on Thursday (May 25), attacked at least four people&nbsp;in the Nagano Prefecture in central Japan.&nbsp;Hours later, the NHK reported that the&nbsp;person escaped from the building and that some other people might still be inside.

As per Kyodo News, a pedestrian reported the incident at around 4:25 pm (local time) which prompted authorities to rush to the scene. The country’s public broadcaster NHK said that the police had received reports that a “man stabbed a woman”.&nbsp;

An eyewitness told NHK that he was working nearby when he saw a woman being stabbed. “A woman came running from the road saying ‘help me’ and she fell down,” said the man. He also said that he had called the police and gathered the neighbours to help the woman.&nbsp;

“Behind her came a man wearing camouflage and carrying a large knife, who stabbed her in the back,” said the eyewitness to the public broadcaster. It was later confirmed that two police officers were also killed, although it was not immediately clear if they had been shot or stabbed.&nbsp; 
 
According to local media reports citing eyewitnesses,&nbsp;the suspect was asked why would he do such a thing, to which he responded by saying "I killed because I wanted to."&nbsp; 
 
The three were taken to a nearby hospital, where the woman was later pronounced dead, said&nbsp;local media reports, citing the police. Kyodo News reported that a fourth person was also injured but couldn't be rescued as he is&nbsp;too close to the scene.&nbsp;

According to the local police, among those attacked were two male police officers, another man and a woman. The man is said to be dressed in a camouflage hat, top and bottoms with sunglasses and a mask, reported NHK.&nbsp;

The police have also warned the locals that a man possessing “a knife or a firearm” is on the run in the area. According to&nbsp;the Kyodo news agency, the perpetrator is said to&nbsp;be barricaded in the house of the city council president and multiple gunshots were heard nearby the site.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Nagano City officials have urged people to stay indoors and children still at local elementary and junior high schools were told to shelter in place. Violent crimes, especially those involving guns, are extremely rare in the country which has&nbsp;a low murder rate and some of the world’s toughest gun laws.

The police also said that homicide detectives and crime scene investigators were at the scene early Sunday. However, the details about the perpetrator or a possible suspect were not immediately available.&nbsp;

While the names of the victims in the Kansas City shooting were not released by the authorities, a report by The Guardian said friends of&nbsp;Jason McConnell identified him as one of the victims.

Two high school students killed, four injured in shooting at house party in Mississippi

In Cleveland, United States, a&nbsp;drunk man allegedly killed five people, including an eight-year-old child in a shooting incident at a southeast Texas home. As per the authorities, the suspect, who used an AR-15-style assault rifle to commit the crime, is still at large.

The incident, as per ABC News, occurred shortly after 11:31 pm local time, Friday (GMT 4:31 am, Saturday). Authorities from the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office report that they received a call about a harassment incident in Cleveland, Texas — around 55 miles (89 Kilometres) north of Houston.

When the police reached the scene, they found several victims shot “almost execution style”.

Speaking to ABC News’ Houston station KTRK, Sheriff Greg Capers of the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office revealed that all the victims were shot “from the neck up almost execution style, basically in the head.”

Police believe the motive was a disagreement between the victims and the suspect, who had a habit of shooting his AR-15-style rifle in his front yard.

Capers told KTRK that the victims had asked the shooter to keep quiet as they had a sleeping baby.

“My understanding is that the victims, they came over to the fence and said ‘Hey could [you not do your] shooting out in the yard? We have a young baby that’s trying to go to sleep,’ and he had been drinking and he says ‘I’ll do what I want to in my front yard’,” said Capers.

At the time of the shooting, there were at least 10 people in the home. The youngest victim of the tragic shooting is an eight-year-old child.

Also among the victims are two females who, as per the ABC News report — in an apparent attempt to save them — were found lying on top of the two surviving children.

The suspect, as per authorities, is a Mexican male, armed with an AR-15-style rifle. He is believed to be in an intoxicated state. Police are looking for a Hispanic male with short black hair, approximately 5’8" tall. The suspect was reportedly last seen wearing blue jeans with a black shirt and work boots.

All of his victims are between the ages of eight and 40 years. Four victims were declared dead at the scene while another four died after being taken to the hospital.

Police haven’t revealed the identities of the victims or their relationship to the suspect, but said they are from Honduras.&nbsp;

“We are getting closer to him every minute of every hour, but we know who he is,” said Capers, adding, “he [the suspect] is from Mexico. The victims themselves were from Honduras.”

Authorities have advised locals to “stay inside, stay clear” of the crime scene until the investigation has concluded.

Four victims were declared dead at the scene while another four died after being taken to the hospital. The Midwest City Police Department previously told CBS News that officers were responding to reports of an active shooter at the college.&nbsp;

Later in the day, the college said it had ended a campus-wide lockdown and urged the community to avoid the area south of the Humanities and Administration Building. The school said all activities and classes were cancelled for the remainder of the day.

As the situation calmed, police identified the suspect as Brandon Morrissette, 30. Morrissette faces&nbsp;a first-degree murder charge.

Police said that the dead victim and Morrissette's wife, who is also a student at Rose State College, were walking out of a building when they were confronted by the gunman.

The victim, who police did not immediately identify, was pronounced dead on the scene. Police did not provide any other details about what might have led to the shooting.

One woman was injured in a firing incident in the Indian capital city of Delhi's Saket court, on Friday (April 21), as per media reports. The woman identified as&nbsp;M Radha who is in her 40s sustained two bullet injuries one in her arm and the other on her abdomen. Initial reports suggest that four&nbsp;rounds were fired on the court premises while the injured woman&nbsp;was reportedly&nbsp;rushed to the&nbsp;Max Hospital in South Delhi's&nbsp;Saket.&nbsp; 
 
The victim who was earlier said to be in critical condition is now 'stable', as per a local media report citing officials.&nbsp;A senior police&nbsp;official told PTI, that the woman&nbsp;was with her lawyer&nbsp;when a person shot her. According to reports, the accused was dressed as a lawyer and managed to flee.&nbsp;

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chandan Chowdhary, said that the incident occurred at 10:30 am (local time). "The accused has been identified. He had lodged a case under IPC section 420 (cheating) against the victim and advocate Rajendra Jha," said Chowdhary, as per PTI. Eyewitness accounts also suggest that the accused fired four to five rounds before escaping through the court's canteen's&nbsp;back entry.&nbsp;

This comes after two gunmen dressed as lawyers opened fire in Delhi's Rohini court, last year, on September 24. They were later killed in police firing. Additionally, in April 2022, the&nbsp;argument between two advocates and their client, in Rohini court&nbsp;was followed by&nbsp;another incident of a gun firing.&nbsp;

Shootings in New York City rose during the first quarter compared with the same period last year, even as homicides declined, police officials said Wednesday afternoon, the continuation of a drumbeat of violence that emerged early in the pandemic and has not ebbed with the virus.

Shooting incidents increased to 296 in the first quarter compared with 260 during the same period last year, according to the latest Police Department statistics, which include the first three days of April.

The trend reflects “continuing and completely unacceptable violence in our streets,” Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said Wednesday.

The briefing at One Police Plaza was the first time since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic that city officials gathered collectively for what was once a ritual for police, reporters and the public. In the two years since the Police Department’s last full briefing on crime statistics, pockets of New York have seen upticks in shootings and murders, underscoring concern that America’s most populous city could be headed backward.

Mayor Eric Adams has made reversing that trend the central goal of his administration.

“The NYPD will use every resource and opportunity to secure this city,” Sewell said, but “reversing years will not take weeks.”

She credited the decrease in the homicide rates to a surge of arrests. In March, she said, officers made more than 4,000 felony arrests, more than double the number of those made at the same time last year.

But her remarks came as the city confronts a string of shootings that caught bystanders in crossfire. Last week, 12-year-old Kade Lewin died in Brooklyn when a barrage of bullets hit a parked car in which he was eating a meal with relatives. Days later, a 61-year-old woman died after she was struck by a stray bullet in the Bronx. And, last month, a 3-year-old toddler was shot in the shoulder outside a Brooklyn day care center.

As a weary city emerges from more than two years of pandemic limbo, a gap has opened between perceptions of crime and the realities of the city. This New York is more dangerous by some measures than the one many residents lived in at the start of the pandemic, in the spring of 2020. Yet it remains far safer than in previous years, and crime is lower than in many of the nation’s largest cities.

Gun violence hit historic lows in 2018 and 2019. Even with recent increases, rates of shootings, felony assaults and overall major crimes are similar to or below the levels of the late 2000s and early 2010s. There have been nine fewer murders this year compared with the same period last year.

This year’s first three months have also seen rises in crimes like burglaries, robberies and grand larcenies compared to the same periods in 2020 and 2021, although experts warn against short-term comparisons, particularly during the statistic-skewing pandemic.

New York isn’t the only city struggling to curb crime after the pandemic. In Houston, at least 473 homicides were recorded last year; New York saw only 15 more, with nearly four times the total population. And just 90 minutes south, Philadelphia saw 559 murders in 2021, in a city with just 1.5 million residents.

But fresh anxieties have driven warnings about a return to New York’s “bad old days,” when there were many years with more than 2,000 murders. To some, the resemblance between the periods lies not in the crime or the data, but in the coverage.

“It reminds me of the 1990s, in the sense that every incident of violence becomes a major news story,” said Jeffrey Butts, director of the research and evaluation center at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. “Some of these things are just shocking. But it’s also important to remember that these things have always happened, and still been fairly infrequent incidents. But they stay with you for so long and stick in your memory.”

Some types of crime have risen significantly since the pandemic began.

Shootings are twice as high as in the years preceding the pandemic, and the burden falls primarily on Black and Latino neighborhoods. More than 1,800 shootings were reported annually in the past two years after dropping under 900 in 2018. Attacks against Asian New Yorkers have spiked, with more than 130 hate-crime complaints reported to police last year, after just one in 2019.

The subway system has also grown more hazardous, with assaults and other major felonies significantly up during the pandemic, when adjusted for a weekday ridership below 60% of former levels. And not all types of frightening events like aggressive encounters on the street or harassment on a train are simple to track.

Still, Adams and Sewell have effected a host of changes at the Police Department, including the reincarnation of plainclothes anti-crime units disbanded in 2020 over allegations of brutality and excessive force. The new units have been reimagined to include training on constitutional rights and de-escalation, and officers now wear a modified uniform instead of street clothes, the Police Department said.

Since being redeployed in March, the units have made 121 arrests, 25 of which were for illegal gun possession, the Police Department said Wednesday.

Indeed, officials said Wednesday they had arrested a 21-year-old man driving a stolen car in Harlem, and were investigating whether he was involved in the drive-by shooting that left Lewin dead in East Flatbush. The suspect was driving a Mercedes-Benz that was one of two cars stolen in Queens on March 10, said James W. Essig, the chief of detectives. The other stolen car was used in the East Flatbush shooting, he said.

Shootings rise in New York, coloring perceptions of city’s safety

The Chicago Police Department reports that two officers were shot on the South Side of Chicago on Saturday night. One of them, a&nbsp;29-year-old female officer, later succumbed to her injuries.

According to Chicago Police, the officers were shot around 9:10 pm in the 6300-block of South Bell Avenue, and they were in serious-to-critical condition.

The officers were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where soon after the shooting, a crowd of police officers had gathered. Some officers appeared emotional, others hugged each other.

While one officer succumbed to her injuries, the other officer continues to battle for his life.&nbsp;It is reported that the injured officer has three gunshot wounds, one going through an eye, one lodged in the back of the head, and one in the shoulder. It is not safe to operate right now, due to the wound locations.

The officer is reported to be able to move one arm, and although he is intubated, he can breathe. 
 
Mayor Lightfoot and CPD Superintendent Brown discussed the condition of victims and suspects at a press conference on Sunday, just before afternoon.

Superintendent Brown while speaking to the media, talked of the grief that the whole department is feeling over the incident. He talked about how&nbsp;police officers risk their lives&nbsp;to save the lives of strangers, willing to run toward things, toward the gunfire, all in the name of duty.

The mayor declared a day of mourning and&nbsp;called on people to show support and work with the police.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The police reported that three people were involved in the shooting, out of which two suspects had been arrested. Currently, one suspect in Christ hospital is in stable condition after being shot. Efforts are being made to find a third individual. A weapon was also recovered from the scene.

It is reported that the injured officer has three gunshot wounds, one going through an eye, one lodged in the back of the head, and one in the shoulder. It is not safe to operate right now, due to the wound locations. The officer is reported to be able to move one arm, and although he is intubated, he can breathe. Mayor Lightfoot and CPD Superintendent Brown discussed the condition of victims and suspects at a press conference on Sunday, just before afternoon. Superintendent Brown while speaking to the media, talked of the grief that the whole department is feeling over the incident. He talked about how police officers risk their lives to save the lives of strangers, willing to run toward things, toward the gunfire, all in the name of duty. The mayor declared a day of mourning and called on people to show support and work with the police. The police reported that three people were involved in the shooting, out of which two suspects had been arrested. Currently, one suspect in Christ hospital is in stable condition after being shot. Police in the nearby town of Aalen said the incident appeared to be linked to a "Personal relationship", adding there was no indication that there were additional perpetrators.

The suspect has been identified as a 26-year-old man.

According to AFP, the suspect "called the police station in (nearby town) Aalen at 12:48 pm (1148 GMT) to inform them he had shot several people," police chief Reiner Moeller told reporters in a press conference hours after the killings.&nbsp;

The young man stayed on the line, and when the first officers arrived minutes later at the hotel where the shooting took place, they immediately arrested him outside.

"They were then able to identify six dead people both inside and behind the building," Moeller said, including three men aged 36, 65 and 69 and three women aged 36, 56 and 62.
