Mridul recalls how the harassment continued for days and Nath would try to call her or knock at her door, drunk every night.&nbsp;<br />

"Few days later I got very sick &amp; was laid up and couldn't shoot. The stress had broken me. He continued to traumatise me with calls. And knocks. The hairdresser would answer. One day when he landed up at the door and cried and begged to be allowed in to sodas to me to apologise.. I couldn't take it anymore I told her to accompany him in..he pulled a chair next to my bed and howled. Said he was an alcoholic and that he had destroyed everything his family his marriage everything's and I was like his daughter and he respected me and that he was very sorry. He says he had learnt his lesson and that he would go to therapy and change it all..</p>

<p>I finally broke my silence I screamed shouted cried and it was done. I believed him. I had to," the actress further wrote.&nbsp;<br />

Mridul stated that while she was ready to forgive him and move on, but he went around telling everyone in Bollywood that she had an attitude problem.&nbsp;<br />

<p>Looks like Tanushree Dutta's sexual harassment case has opened a can of worms in the entertainment industry in India. After Tanushree's allegations against actor Nana Patekar, now women on Twitter have accused stand-up comic and AIB writer Utsav Chakraborty of sexual harassment.&nbsp;<br />

Chakraborty, in a tweet, was chastising Indian men for harassing women on an Australian cruise. A woman responded to the his tweet stating that it was ironic of him to comment on the matter considering he has inb the past demanded "unsolicited and inappropriate photographs”.<br />
<br />
In a series of tweets, she detailed how other women narrated stories about Chakraborty making unsolicited sexual advances towards them over social media. She also shared screenshots of chats, including one with a woman who shared an incident that took place when she was 17 years old.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The women also slammed other stand-up comedians who depsite knowing Chakraborty's past record continued to work with him. Chakraborty was a writer for AIB till 2016 and has featured in numerous of their videos. He also served as a writer for Abish Mathew's show 'Son Of Abish'.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The Mumbai police responded to the twitter thread and stated that they would look into the matter and take action on it immediately.&nbsp;<br />

The Twitter thread led to a lot of female comedians like Aditi Mittal and Kaneez Surka speaking out in support of the women and calling out Chakraborty's behaviour.&nbsp;<br />

<p>Comedy collective AIB, who have collaborated with Chakraborty in the past, released a statement saying they would take down videos featuring the accused comedian until an investigation into the allegations yields result. “The accusations describe a pattern of behaviour that is unacceptable, and we at AIB [All India Bakchod] condemn Utsav’s alleged behaviour,” the statement said. AIB has decided to delist all the videos on their Youtube channel which feature Chakraborty.&nbsp;</p>

A woman responded to the his tweet stating that it was ironic of him to comment on the matter considering he has inb the past demanded "unsolicited and inappropriate photographs”. In a series of tweets, she detailed how other women narrated stories about Chakraborty making unsolicited sexual advances towards them over social media. She also shared screenshots of chats, including one with a woman who shared an incident that took place when she was 17 years old. The women also slammed other stand-up comedians who depsite knowing Chakraborty's past record continued to work with him. Chakraborty was a writer for AIB till 2016 and has featured in numerous of their videos. He also served as a writer for Abish Mathew's show 'Son Of Abish'. The Mumbai police responded to the twitter thread and stated that they would look into the matter and take action on it immediately. The Twitter thread led to a lot of female comedians like Aditi Mittal and Kaneez Surka speaking out in support of the women and calling out Chakraborty's behaviour. According to the guidelines, the current committee of CINTAA cannot deal with cases that date back more than three years and hence Dutta's grievance cannot be addressed in the present day. However, in its statement, CINTAA appealed to the authorities to take cognisance of Dutta's statements and conduct a fresh and impartial enquiry on the matter. &nbsp;<br />

"We also appeal to all our members to report any such incidents to us immediately. We are duty bound to give them our complete moral and legal support to ensure just and safe working conditions," the statement further read.</p>

<p>In a recent TV interview, Dutta claimed that Patekar had misbehaved with her on the sets of the 2008 film. During the interview, she also alleged that the actor had the tacit support of the film's makers.</p>

<p>We are quick to point fingers at others when things go wrong. The recent allegation made by actress Tanushree Dutta on veteran actor Nana Patekar of sexual harassment has not just opened a can of worms in Bollywood but also got everyone divided. While most of Bollywood is being criticised (and rightly so) for not taking a stand and maintaining a stoic silence over a matter that needs urgent attention, there is also a certain section which has been constantly doubting Tanushree Dutta’s intent tagging the entire episode as a publicity stunt.</p>

<p>The incident happened ten years back on the sets of ‘Horn Ok Pleasss’ – a film that had Patekar playing a lead role while Dutta was signed in for a special number. Dutta states that it was supposed to be a solo number and she had rehearsed for different steps prior to the actual day of the shoot. On the day of the shoot, Nana Patekar insisted on joining and suggested steps to her which made her uncomfortable. As she stormed out of the set and locked herself in the vanity van, Tanushree alleges that the producer, the actor and the director called goons from MNS to vandalize her car as she tried to leave the set with her parents.</p>

<p>10 years on, as Tanushree brought up the topic in context to the global #MeToo movement in a recent TV interview. Bollywood, in its true fashion, has decided to remain mum. Some of the prominent names of the film industry like Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan have evaded commenting on the issue. There are others like Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor who have come out in support of the actress and emphasised the importance to listen to her instead of questioning her intentions. And while Bollywood remains divided, the reactions from the common man have just highlighted the way our society functions.<br />

Is it right to hold only the film industry accountable? Cases of sexual intimidation and harassment are not new to us. Neither is it just restricted to Bollywood. It is prevalent in workplaces and even homes. And it has always made us uncomfortable. Haven’t we all heard some serious cases of harassment and then brushed it under the carpet? So many such cases are never reported because of the fear of unpleasantness that comes along with it. So many times the victim is made to feel ashamed, questioned and cross-examined to an extent that he or she feels guilty and at fault.</p>

<p>I have heard of women leaving their secured job because of sexual intimidation from male colleagues. In most cases, they had complained to the HR but the company failed to take appropriate action and eventually it aggravated the problem making it difficult for them to work. In these cases, the companies failed the women.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Then there are horrid stories of abuse within families where a cousin or a relative would have made advances or even worse sexually exploited a child at a young age. In such cases, neither is the relative ostracised nor the victim. The victim is forced to co-exist with her offender. How are these cases any different from what Bollywood did to Tanushree?</p>

<p>We are all culprits and as a society, we all need to grow a spine.&nbsp;</p>

When he was asked to comment on the issue, 66-year-old Kapoor cheekily said, "I don't know what happened 10 years ago, I was a kid back then." Laughing it off is perhaps the best way to evade the unpleasant question.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The fact that a young budding star with an abysmal body of work complained about an established National Award-winning actor also did not help the case. Tanushree Dutta was best known for her raunchy roles in films like 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' and 'Chocolate'- and had dared to take on an actor of Nana Patekar's stature- who has had a shining career in films for over two decades and spotless track record. It was easy to believe the man and not the girl - because she could be doing this for 'publicity'. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Outside of Bollywood too, men, especially those in power yield an unspoken tyrannical rule over others making their mistakes blur. The film industry is no different. Here misogyny is at its peak. What Tanushree went through is not new, scores of women, with aspirations in their heart, come to Bollywood to become a part of the glamour world and so many of them have to retract after going through similar experiences.&nbsp;</p>

None of the men had a difficult time. Their ego had won! The men got all the support that any industry ( not just the film industry) gives to powerful men. The only person who was traumatized was Tanushree. The scars have still not healed. Please do the math."</p>

<p>Would Tanushree Dutta's case gain this big a momentum if Farhan Akhtar and other prominent celebrities hadn't tweeted in her support? I doubt most of the media houses would pick up the story had journalist Janice Sequeira not corroborated Tanushree's story.&nbsp;</p>

<p>We all, media included, pay attention to those in power. It is human nature to listen to the people who have substantial influence over the society. We always tend to overlook those who may not be that influential or who do not have a say in things or perhaps do not enjoy the financial backing.</p>

They may not be always speaking the truth, but that judgment can only be made after we hear all sides of the story. <p>An Egyptian court Saturday handed a two-year suspended jail sentence to a woman human rights activist arrested in May after posting a video criticising sexual harassment in Egypt, her lawyer said.</p>

<p>Fathi "is a human rights defender and sexual harassment survivor, who told her truth to the world and highlighted the vital issue of women’s safety in Egypt," Bounaim said.</p>

Court sentences Egypt activist who slammed sexual harassment

<p>A 40-year-old man was arrested here Thursday for allegedly raping his teenage daughter, who claimed that she was being sexually harassed by her father for the last three years, a police official said.</p>

<p>The man, a daily wage labourer, had raped the 14-year-old girl two days ago after which she somehow reached the police and narrated her ordeal, the official said.</p>

<p>"The family belongs to Bihar and they were staying in Chhijarsi village here for last some years. The girl's mother, who is a housewife, was aware of the happenings but both were threatened to remain silent," said the official from Phase-III police station.</p>

<p>"She has said in her complaint that her father is a drug addict and also did not allow her to attend school," the policeman said.</p>

<p>An FIR was registered in the case and the accused was arrested from his&nbsp;<br />
house.</p>

<p>He was booked under IPC Section 376 (rape) and under provisions of the Protection of Child against Sexual Offence (POCSO) Act and remanded in judicial custody, the official said.</p>

<p>"It fills a large legislative vacuum, and it is a deterrent," she added.</p>

<p>The kingdom's driving ban on women is slated to end June 24, as part of a highly publicised liberalisation drive launched by powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who styles himself as a progressive reformer.</p>

<p>The prince has also lifted a decades-long ban on cinemas, allowed mixed-gender concerts and clipped the powers of the long-feared religious police.</p>

<p>But the social reforms appear overshadowed by the recent arrests of at least 11 activists, mostly identified by rights groups as veteran women campaigners for the right to drive and to end the conservative country's male guardianship system.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Authorities have accused the activists of "suspicious contact with foreign parties", providing financial support to "enemies" and attempting to undermine the kingdom's "security and stability".</p>

<p>Reports in state-backed media branded some of the detainees traitors and "agents of embassies".</p>

<p>They were convicted of gang-raping a woman and thrashing her male friend on March 15, 2012, when the two were returning from Trimbakeshwar in Nashik district. The convicts claimed that they were framed up as they had seen the victim and her friend in a compromising position and threatened to take them to police for indecent behaviour.</p>

<p>The appeals sought to highlight that while the woman claimed that the incident took place on March 15, she lodged the complaint two days later. A medical examination had ruled out a rape since there was no injury on the woman's body, the appellants said.</p>

<p>The high court, however, upheld the conviction and sentence, citing a Supreme Court's observation in a past case that "rarely will a girl or woman in India make false allegations of sexual assault". The victim, who comes from a conservative section of society and who is separated from her husband, must have been afraid of stigma and "reflection on her chastity", Justice Badar said.</p>

<p>"She had fear of being looked down upon by the society including her parents... Being overpowered by a feeling of shame on account of gang-rape, her non-approaching a police station immediately...Cannot be said to be abnormal and throwing doubt on her version," the judge said.</p>

<p>Because of her secret excursion with a male friend, she must have felt that she would be branded as promiscuous if the incident came to light, the high court said. "Minor discrepancies" such as delay in lodging the complaint does not weaken her case, the court said.</p>

She describes the alienation and disaffection she felt from her home country and how this largely stemmed from the fact that India had failed its women (and by extension her) due to the widespread sexual violence within our society. Finally, this disaffection led her to pursue a strategy of extending her stay in the United States (or literally anywhere else) in an attempt to escape the horrifically morbid fate Indian women are preordained. While we largely share her concerns about widespread violence against women, we find her characterisation of India&#39;s society misinformed, laced with generalities and therefore incredibly problematic.</p>

<p>As Indians studying and working in the United States, we are confronted by a similar array of choices as Ms. Bhattacharyya. The US is inarguably a melting pot of diversity - a country that prides itself as the land of immigrants; attracting the best and brightest from every corner of the world. And yet, this fantastical &#39;land of the free&#39; too suffers its own set of major issues ranging from mass gun violence to racism. The insidious culture of sexual harassment and assault is ubiquitous in the US too, spanning Wall Street, Hollywood and college campuses across the country. It is misleading to suggest that a woman can leave her house and drive for a 100 miles without a single care in the world. If one is to believe economist Amartya Sen, even if we multiply the instances of reported rape by 10 (to account for underreporting), estimates of its occurrence would still be substantially lower than in the UK, US, Sweden or South Africa.</p>

<p>The fight for gender inequality and violence against women has miles to go in India as it does in the rest of the world, but despair and a defeatist attitude is not the way to win any battle, least of all this one. In her essay, Bhattacharyya laments that even change would be unable to undo the damage done by our history of oppression. It seems as if she hasn&#39;t examined the history of the very country she holds in such high regards. If India has a history for regressive practices, Western history is also replete with similar repression of women&#39;s rights right up to the early twentieth century. It was only after a long struggle that women were able to win the right to vote. And yet, if, as the writer herself argues, she feels safe enough to drive across the country at 3am, it is clear that things have changed. India on the other hand, being a relatively younger democracy and several years behind the United States in economic development cannot be dismissed as incapable of change or progress. We may be the world&#39;s &#39;smelliest&#39; and most &#39;interesting&#39; melting pot as frivolously put by Ms Bhattacharyya, but at least we broke the glass ceiling long before any of us even called it that with the reign of Indira Gandhi. As of 2018, this feat is yet to be accomplished by the world&#39;s oldest democracy, a country where she feels safer and more empowered in.</p>

<p>The inscrutable Americans-esque analysis of her personal experience in the United States of feeling &#39;poor&#39; and like an &#39;outsider&#39; goes against the very spirit of why we moved to the US - a country that thrives on its immigrants&#39; confidence and relentless will to stand out. She not only perpetuates the Indian stereotype of being secondary in America, but also reaffirms the superiority of someone up in the West determining just how hipster you had to be to be considered cool, or how much of your intellectual prowess authors like Hegel determine. While it may make for a catchy statement to call India a country that doesn&#39;t know what to do with its women, it&#39;s utterly careless to do so because of how dangerously wrong this narrative is. For starters, the Indian government through one of its landmark schemes MUDRA Yojana, provides small businesses across the country with seed capital in the form of loans, and almost 75 per cent of its beneficiaries are female entrepreneurs, thereby not making India a country that &quot;doesn&#39;t know what to do with its women&quot; as claimed by Ms. Bhattacharya. We are also the first country in the region to have a purely women-led railway station in Rajasthan affirming public female confidence in a state that is traditionally known for nothing but its textiles and rates of child marriage. Further initiatives to boost women participation have also been kickstarted by the private sector. While there are several challenges we need to scale in order to become the country we deserve to be, we are eternally optimistic about our ability to surmount them.</p>

<p>The overall comparison of a global super power with one of the oldest civilisations in the world is not only irresponsible but also blatantly ignorant. Our nation stands at the cusp of awakening and ever growing polarisation, much like the United States. We use our rather fantastical, emotionally charged and inspiring films to inculcate a culture of openness and make big budget movies about periods, homosexuality, and religious tolerance. In her 70 young years, India has kept one finger on the pulse of social change. The transactional approach she has adopted when assessing her loyalty to any country, be it the United States or India, is disheartening and just the kind of spirit a nation that thrives on unconditional patriotism-fueled progress does not need. As Indians living in the United States, the only parting advice we can give her is to continue texting friends and family while being out and about on American streets at 3 in the morning; for these roads too are rife with thorns, some much sharper than the ones in India.</p>

<p>The trade publication said the Academy immediately opened an investigation after receiving three harassment claims against Bailey on Wednesday.</p>

<p>Bailey, 75, a cinematographer whose credits include &quot;Groundhog Day&quot; and &quot;The Big Chill,&quot; was elected to a four-year term as head of the Academy in August.</p>

<p>His brief tenure has been marked by the birth of the #MeToo movement started by actress Alyssa Milano and which went global, highlighting accusations of sexual abuse.</p>

<p>Harvey Weinstein, whose studio Miramax was behind hits such as &quot;Shakespeare In Love&quot; and &quot;Pulp Fiction,&quot; was expelled from the Academy in October following accusations of sexual harassment and abuse by dozens of women.</p>

<p>In December, the Academy adopted a code of conduct for its members.</p>

<p>At a February lunch for this year`s Oscar nominees, Bailey promised the Academy would adopt a &quot;greater awareness and responsibility in balancing gender, race, ethnicity, and religion.&quot;</p>

<p>A case has been registered against a professor of the JNU&#39;s School of Life Sciences (SLS) following allegations of sexual harassment against him by a group of women students, police said today.</p>

<p>The FIR was registered at the Vasant Kunj police station in southwest Delhi, they said.</p>

<p>&quot;The professor often makes sexually-coloured remarks, open demands for sex and comments on the figure of almost every girl. If a girl objects, he holds a grudge against her,&quot; the women students had said in a statement yesterday.</p>

<p>&quot;There is a financial nexus between the professor and the administration. No instrument has been purchased for years, but still crores of rupees have been spent,&quot; it said.</p>

<p>The statement was issued by them after a press meet on the JNU campus.</p>

<p>The Delhi Police said they would be questioning the professor soon.</p>

<p>The JNU professor, however, told, that he was being targeted by the Left-leaning students.</p>

<p>&quot;The girls, who have levelled the allegations against me, had received a mail from me on February 27 regarding their irregular attendance in the lab. So, they are targeting me,&quot; he had said yesterday.</p>

<p>Today, a large number of students of the SLS staged a demonstration and demanded the Dean of the school suspend the professor from all official positions and initiate an inquiry.</p>

<p>In a letter to the Dean, the students said, &quot;As you already know an FIR has been filed against the professor and since he is in several positions of power and holding university posts, we ask you to immediately inform the vice- chancellor and university administration to suspend him from all the positions.&quot;</p>

<p>Members of the JNU Students Union, representatives of the discarded Gender Sensitisation Committee against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) and those belonging to the women&#39;s collective Pinjra Tod also took part in the protest.</p>

<p>The protesters have announced a march to the administration block demanding the vice-chancellor to intervene.</p>

<p>The podcast is said to be hosted by Colleen O&rsquo;Brien and Sonia Dara. The duo interviewed Toni Townes-Whitley, who holds the new role of corporate vice president of industry at Microsoft. The goal of the team is to flow with the changes in a variety of industries. &nbsp;</p>

<p>But Townes-Whitley has another charter to keep woman excited about technology. She refers to it in the podcast as the &ldquo;pink color.&rdquo;</p>

Attorneys for the women called the number of complaints "shocking" in the court filings and the response by Microsoft's investigations team "lackluster." Microsoft said in court filings that the plaintiffs did not identify practices that impact enough employees to warrant a class action and that it spends more than $55 million per year to promote diversity and inclusion. The company had about 74,000 U.S. employees at the end of last year. Microsoft said the plaintiffs cannot cite one example of a pay or promotion problem in which Microsoft's investigations team should have found a violation of company policy, but did not. A Microsoft spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment. Just last week, Microsoft released a special version last week of a twice-monthly published podcast that focuses on women in business and technology. The podcast celebrates International Women’s Day. The podcast is said to be hosted by Colleen O’Brien and Sonia Dara. The duo interviewed Toni Townes-Whitley, who holds the new role of corporate vice president of industry at Microsoft. The goal of the team is to flow with the changes in a variety of industries. But Townes-Whitley has another charter to keep woman excited about technology. She refers to it in the podcast as the “pink color.”
