Indian equity markets open with minor gains near record highs

The Indian markets ended on a buoyant note after finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman's presented the Budget in Parliament on Tuesday.

The Sensex jumped 848.40 points to end at 58,862.57 and the Nifty rose 237.00 points to end at 17,576.85.

The Sensex had opened over 600 points up and the Nifty had advanced 159 points in opening trade ahead of the Budget presentation.

Domestic equities remained positive despite mixed global cues as a persistent decline in daily caseload and improvement in recovery rate in second wave of COVID-19 continued to lift investors' sentiments, said Binod Modi, Head - Strategy at Reliance Securities.

Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai and Tokyo ended on a positive note, while Hong Kong and Seoul were in the red.

Equities in Europe were largely trading with gains in mid-session deals.

Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 1.81 per cent higher at USD 67.55 per barrel.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital market on Friday as they bought shares worth Rs 1,418.43 crore, as per exchange data.

V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said the market is in an excessively volatile zone. Support comes from sustained FII buying which has crossed Rs 7,000 crore during the last four trading days.

"But, there is a major dampener in the form of fast-rising COVID-19 cases, especially in some economically significant cities. Restricted economic activity in these regions might impact the optimistic growth projections for FY 22," he added.

Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai and Seoul were trading on a positive note in mid-session deals, while Hong Kong and Tokyo were in the red.

Meanwhile, the global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 0.50 per cent lower at $64.21 per barrel.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index dropped over three per cent while Shanghai also traded lower.

Kotak Mahindra Bank ticked up by 4.1 per cent and HDFC Bank by 1.1 per cent. The other major gainers were Tata Steel, Dr Reddy, Cipla, ITC and Hindustan Unilever. However, Bharti Airtel dipped by 2.7 per cent to Rs 584.40 per share and Tata Motors skidded by 2.3 per cent. &nbsp;

Equity indices ratcheted higher for the fifth session on the trot on Tuesday as positive results from early trials of a COVID-19 vaccine candidate buoyed markets globally.

A sharp recovery in the rupee and healthy earnings from some corporates added to the bullish mood here, traders said.

The 30-share BSE Sensex, which opened on a firm foot, stayed in the positive territory throughout the session and closed at 37,930.33, up 511.34 points, or 1.37 per cent.&nbsp;Similarly, the NSE Nifty rose 140.05 points, or 1.27 per cent, to end at 11,162.25.

It is the highest closing for both the benchmarks since March 5.

PowerGrid was the top gainer among the Sensex constituents, spurting 6.14 per cent, followed by Maruti, ICICI Bank, HDFC, Kotak Bank, Axis Bank, and Reliance Industries.&nbsp;On the other hand, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Asian Paints and Sun Pharma were among the laggards, dropping up to 4.31 per cent.

Global equities rallied after Oxford University's COVID-19 vaccine candidate showed positive trial results, while EU leaders finalised a 750-billion euro stimulus plan.

"EU leaders have finally reached an agreement on a massive stimulus plan to combat the pandemic impact. Domestic stock market skidded over 6% in the waning moments of trading on Wednesday, with financial stocks suffering the most, as fears of the economic damage from the coronavirus pandemic eclipsed sweeping stimulus moves from policymakers around the world.

The BSE S&amp;P Sensex closed 1,710 points or 5.59 per cent lower at 28,870 while the Nifty 50 fell by 498 points or 5.56 per cent to 8,469.

The sell-off on Dalal Street continued during the trading sessions as traders worried over rising coronavirus cases and tough stance by the Supreme Court on AGR dues of telecom operators.

Banking stocks were the most hit as they have huge exposure to telecom firms. Worries of greater disruptions in businesses rose due to a rising number of new coronavirus cases within and outside India.

Meanwhile, Yes Bank to resume operations from 19 March; customers will be able to access all digital services, platforms. Yes Bank will resume operations from Friday, according to news reports.

Domestic stock market skidded over 6% in the waning moments of trading on Wednesday, with financial stocks suffering the most, as fears of the economic damage from the coronavirus pandemic eclipsed sweeping stimulus moves from policymakers around the world. The BSE S&P Sensex closed 1,710 points or 5.59 per cent lower at 28,870 while the Nifty 50 fell by 498 points or 5.56 per cent to 8,469. The sell-off on Dalal Street continued during the trading sessions as traders worried over rising coronavirus cases and tough stance by the Supreme Court on AGR dues of telecom operators. Banking stocks were the most hit as they have huge exposure to telecom firms. Worries of greater disruptions in businesses rose due to a rising number of new coronavirus cases within and outside India. Meanwhile, Yes Bank to resume operations from 19 March; customers will be able to access all digital services, platforms. Yes Bank will resume operations from Friday, according to news reports. Rupee reverses early gains to settle marginally down at 74.26 (provisional) against US dollar. (With inputs from agencies)

Auto stocks also slipped with the Nifty auto index slipping nearly 3 per cent.

On Wednesday, Tokyo stocks opened lower as Wall Street responded to economic stimulus announced by US President Trump.

Markets took investors on a gut-churning ride on Monday, with closing nearly 8% lower, as moves by central banks across the globe to cut interest rates failed to calm nerves about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the global economy.

The BSE S&amp;P Sensex closed 2,713.41 points or 7.96 per cent lower at 31,390.07 while the NSE Nifty crashed by 757.80 points or 7.61 per cent to close at 9,197.40.

Within India, the number of virus-positive cases climbed to 110 with fresh reports coming from Maharashtra and Odisha.

All sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were in the red with Nifty private bank and realty down by 7.9 per cent each, metal by 7.8 per cent, and IT by 6.8 per cent.

The BSE Sensex went up 262 points to reach 39997.65 at 11am(local time). However, the rupee opened on a weak note and declined by 34 paise to 71.66 against the US dollar in opening trade on Monday after opening on a weak note at 71.62 at the interbank forex market.

The Sensex had tanked over 1,000 points on Saturday after Nirmala Sithraman presented the Budget. Sitharaman had announced cuts in income tax rates for individuals and had scrapped dividend distribution tax (DDT) besides a host of measures to reverse the falling economic growth.
