The 30-share index was trading 188.10 points or 0.5 per cent, higher at 35,780.60.

Similarly, the 50-share NSE Nifty jumped 51.55 points, or 0.48 per cent, to 10,703.75.

On Tuesday, the Sensex ended 64.20 points lower at 35,592, and the Nifty edged lower by over 9 points to close at 10,652.

In morning session on Wednesday, Axis Bank was the biggest gainer on both indices, rallying over 6 per cent after the third largest private sector lender Axis Bank Tuesday reported a 131 per cent surge in net income for the December quarter at Rs 1,681 crore boosted by a huge jump in recoveries from written-off accounts.

Shares of ICICI Bank too rallied 4 per cent ahead of its quarterly results, scheduled to be released later in the day.

Tata Steel, Yes Bank, Bajaj Finance, Vedanta, Tata Motors, Reliance and M&amp;M were the other top gainers, rallying up to 4 per cent.

While, HDFC Bank, ONGC, PowerGrid, Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, HDFC, Kotak Bank and HUL were the biggest losers, shedding up to 1.07 per cent. 
On a net basis, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth a net of Rs 354.36 crore Tuesday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers to the tune of Rs 81.27 crore, provisional data available with BSE showed.

"With the interim budget set to be announced this Friday; expectation of the government breaching the fiscal deficit is high in order to boost the rural sector," said Hemang Jani, Head - Advisory, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas.

The Market may take it in its stride even if the fiscal deficit target is breached by a small amount, provided that the government is able to convincingly back its actions with a push for growth-oriented policies and display its reforms orientation to be intact, he added.

Global investor sentiment was positive, but the gains were capped as investors were cautious ahead of crucial talks crucial trade talks between American and Chinese officials on January 30 and 31.

The market is also awaiting the outcome of the US Federal Reserve's meeting later in the day.

Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.20 per cent, Shanghai Composite Index was up 0.09 per cent higher, Kospi gained 0.58 per cent, while Japan's Nikkei dropped 0.53 per cent in early trade.

On Wall Street, Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.21 per cent higher on Tuesday.

The rupee, meanwhile, was trading depreciated 21 paise against US $ to 71.32.

Investors lapped up recently-hammered auto, realty, metal, oil and gas, FMCG, banking, power, infrastructure, IT, auto, and capital goods stocks amid unabated funds inflow by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) ahead of the release of key IIP numbers for August and inflation data for September scheduled later in the day.

Bear operators, who had been creating short-positions in the past several sessions, were seen covering up positions, brokers said.

"The whiplash in equities this week continued as market rallied strongly, driven by a good start to earnings season by IT bellwether TCS, a drop in crude oil prices, a drop in gilt bond yields and a strengthening currency," said Sunil Sharma, Chief Investment Officer, Sanctum Wealth Management.

Sensex plunged more than 2 per cent on Thursday, at their lowest closing levels since April, mirroring the markets rout across the globe amid rising trade concerns and expectation of rate hikes in the United States.

The benchmark BSE Sensex closed down 2.19 per cent at 34,001.15. The broader NSE Nifty ended 2.16 per cent lower at 10,234.65.

Shares of oil and gas companies were among the nine stocks that withstood the selloff, after a finance ministry source`s comments on subsidies. Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd was the top percentage gainer at 16.2 per cent, report said.&nbsp;

Earlier, attributing the slump in stock and currency markets to external factors, a finance ministry official Thursday said more steps will be taken to check current account deficit (CAD) and hoped that the rupee would appreciate.

While the stock market benchmark Sensex in the early trade crashed over 1,000 points, the rupee fell to a record low of 74.45 to a dollar.

"What happened in US yesterday had a ripple effect here today. The IMF has downgraded global growth rate, US growth rate for next year, both these had impact on markets," the official told reporters.

He said Indian market is still relatively stable compared with other equity markets. "The rupee may remain firm if oil prices stay range bound. We do believe that rupee should appreciate from this level," the official added.

Markets staged a strong comeback Wednesday after the recent rout as investors started accumulating battered financials, auto and metal stocks amid the rupee recovering from record lows.

The BSE Sensex, after a gap up opening at 34,493.21, rallied to hit a high of 34,858.35 before concluding 461.42 points, or 1.35 per cent higher at 34,760.89.

The broader Nifty too reclaimed the key 10,400 mark. It touched a high of 10,482.35, before finally settling at 10,460.10, showing a significant gain of 159.05 points, or 1.54 per cent.

Key indices stayed in the positive terrain through the session as buying activity gathered momentum.&nbsp;

The Sensex had lost nearly 175 points Tuesday as the rupee plunged to a record low amid unabated capital outflows by foreign funds.

Sentiment also got a lift after the SBI, coming to the rescue of cash-strapped NBFCs, decided Tuesday to buy their assets to the tune of Rs 45,000 crore, a move that will provide liquidity support to non-banking financing companies facing headwinds after a series of loan defaults by IL&amp;FS group firms.

RBI's decision to inject Rs 12,000 crore liquidity into the system through purchase of government bonds on October 11 to meet festive season demand for funds also boosted the sentiment here, market watchers said.

The rupee recovered by 34 paise to 74.05 (intra-day) against the dollar at the forex market Wednesday.

Selling also halted at emerging markets after the dollar turned weak from seven-week highs and steady crude oil prices also positively impacted sentiment.

Meanwhile, Brent crude, the international benchmark, was hovering around USD 84.30 a barrel.

Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers as they bought shares worth Rs 1,526 crore Tuesday while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) offloaded equities amounting to Rs 1,242 crore, provisional data showed.

RBI's decision to inject Rs 12,000 crore liquidity into the system through purchase of government bonds on October 11 to meet festive season demand for funds also boosted the sentiment here, market watchers said. Brokers said weakness was seen in most Asian markets as high US yield and good economic data led to fear that investors would move to the US, dampened trading sentiments here.

The rupee's plunge to a new record low of 73.72 against the dollar in early trade, too, weighed on investor mood.

Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu will hold an inter-ministerial meeting later in the day to discuss trade deficit and its impact on rupee as well as ways to boost exports, an official told PTI.&nbsp;

Representatives from the department of economic affairs, coal ministry, steel ministry, oil ministry and department of pharmaceuticals are expected to attend the meeting.
