<p>The study has found that a distance of 23 billion miles between the Sun and the other star may make things a bit uncomfortable. This may appear a huge distance but just to put into perspective, Proxima Centauri, the star closest to our Siolar System is 24.8 trillion miles away. So 23 billion miles is much less of a distance.</p>

<p>Fortunately, the destruction of Solar System, if at all it happens, may not happen instantly. The process may take billions of years.</p>

Astronauts may not 'fall' in the sense we do here on Earth but they are sure to sometimes wish there was a bit of gravity in space. For astronauts working aboard International Space Station (ISS) zero-gravity means anything that slips from hands goes in any direction it pleases. Besides, its hard to control stuff when you yourself have no weight and are floating inside the space station.</p>

<p>It may look fascinating to see astronauts floating around but zero-gravity has negative impact on human bodies. Prolonged effects include decrease in bone mass. Researchers and engineers from Japan's Kyoto University and Kajima Construction Co. are working on a system that will create 'artificial gravity' that will support human life in space.</p>

<p>These experts are trying to harness Centrifugal Force to create artificial gravity. They are designing a craft that will have a component that will revolve while in space. Astronauts inside that component would experience Centrifugal Force which will keep them steady on surfaces like gravity does on Earth.</p>

<p>The architecture will be cylindrical, 100 metres wide and upto 400 metres tall (328 feet wide and 1,312 feet wide). In order to create artificial gravity, it will complete one revolution every 20 seconds. This will generate 1G of gravity which will be equivalent to that on Earth.</p>

<p>If Humankind is able to achieve creation of artificial gravity, it will open a new vista of space exploration. Currently, astronauts cannot live in space beyond a certain days as effect of zero gravity begins to kick-in. With artificial gravity, astronauts would be able to stay in space for longer periods. This would come in handy in case of space voyages that would require years of space travel.</p>

Japan: Research on for artificial gravity to aid astronauts in space

<p>The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has shared an amazing image of the Cygnus Loop nebula on its official Instagram account. According to a social media user, it looks like an "abstracted skull".&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA says that the wispy blue swirls of the Cygnus Loop nebula are basically the result of a massive stellar explosion that occurred 5,000 to 8,000 years ago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For the unversed, it is known that Cygnus Loop is a large supernova remnant (SNR) in the constellation Cygnus, an emission nebula measuring nearly 3° across.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the post, NASA says that Supernova remnants like this nebula play an important role in "stellar evolution, enriching space with heavy elements and spurring the formation of new stars by compressing stellar gas".&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per NASA, the gas and dust visible here in an ultraviolet (UV) image from our Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) were heated by the shockwave from the supernova.&nbsp;</p>

<p>GALEX was an orbiting space telescope that made observations at UV wavelengths to measure the history of stars forming in the universe. NASA said that the observations were made nearly all the way back to the Big Bang.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Cygnus Loop apparently extends over three times the size of the full moon in the night sky.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The dinosaur, which resembles Tyrannosaurus rex, has been named Meraxes gigas after a fictional dragon in the Game of Thrones book series.</p>

<p>Starting with the skull, paleontologists dug up its remains over the course of four years during field expeditions in the northern Patagonia region of Argentina.</p>

<p>Peter Makovicky from the University of Minnesota, who is the study's senior author, told the news agency AFP that "We won the lottery and found it literally on the first morning."</p>

In the latest sign that we are headed for a grim future, a study has found out that parts of Spain and Portugal are drier than they have been than in last 1200 years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The drier climate has the potential to severely affect wine and Olive production in these two countries.</p>

<p>The Azores High is an area of high atmospheric pressure that moves clockwise over the Atlantic region. It is called "gatekeeper" for rainfall in Europe. The winter rain in Europe is caused by the Azores High. It sends westerly winds inwards into the continent and causes winter rain.</p>

<p>The study of this phenomenon was carried out by researchers in the United States and was published in journal Nature Geoscience.</p>

<p>The study has found that Azores High, the high-pressure system "has changed dramatically in the past century and that these changes in North Atlantic climate are unprecedented within the past millennium".</p>

<p>A climate model simulation was used in this study. The simulation had climate data of the last 1200 years fed to it. The simulation showed that high-pressure system began to grow in last 200 years as greenhouse gas emissions increased.</p>

<p>In 20th century, it expanded even more dramatically as climate change. The scientists have said that as Azores High expanded, western Meditarranean countries have become drier.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Authors of the study say that data trends point towards rainfall decreasing by as much as 10 to 20 per cent by the end of the century. This has the potential of making Iberian peninsula "some of the most vulnerable in Europe".</p>

<p>The average temperature of a healthy human body is around 37 degrees Celsius. It was previously assumed that temperature of the brain would be similar to that of the body. But this study says otherwise.</p>

<p>Scientists from Cambridge University have found that average temperature of a healthy human brain is 38.5 degrees Celsius. Some of the inner regions of the brain were even measured to be at 40 degrees Celsius.</p>

<p>Things such as lifestyle, genetic differences were factored in. The volunteers were also given activity trackers to be worn on their wrists.</p>

<p>It was found that in healthy participants, the average temperature of the brain was 38.5 degrees Celsius. This was more than two degrees hotter than the temperature measured under the tongue. The study also found that the brain temperature varied through the day depending on</p>

<p>But a particular nova is being called a 'record-fast' nova. This is because it flashed, and was visible for just a day and then faded from the view.</p>

<p>The galactic nova was in the northern constellation of Hercules the Hero along the constellation's border with Sagitta and Aquila.</p>

<p>Japanese amateur astronomer Seidji Ueda made discovery of the nova on the night of June 21, 2021. The nova was named V1674 Herculis (V1674 Her or Nova Herculis 2021).</p>

<p>A nova differes from a supernova. It is usually observed in binary star system, that is, two stars revolving around each other due to mutual effect of the gravity they exert on each other. One of them is a white dwarf star. The white dwarf siphons material from its companion star. The material gets accumuated near the white dwarf and is then heated. It results in an explosion. This is the nova.</p>

<p>"The white dwarf that exploded is massive and growing in mass toward a Supernova 1A explosion," astronomer Sumner Starrfield of the University of Minnesota told Universe Today. "It ejected far less mass than necessary to be accrete by the white dwarf and initiate an explosion."</p>

<p>Novae form important celestial process. They seed heavier elements back into space</p>

<p>"We are continuing to observe this system since it has not returned to quiescence," says Starrfield. "We know that it has a ~500-second oscillation—presumably the white dwarf rotation period—and an about 3.6 hour rotation period that is probably the rotation period of the binary. We need more spectroscopy and photometry to better understand those periods and the implications of those periods."</p>

A 'record-fast' nova was visible for a day and then vanished

<p>In a new study, scientists have found that horseshoe crabs or Limulidae are vital for vaccine safety. As a result of habitat loss and overharvesting for use in food the "living fossils" are listed as vulnerable in America and endangered in Asia.</p>

<p>While dinosaurs arose and went extinct followed by transitioning of early fish to the land animals that would eventually give rise to humans, horseshoe crabs have patrolled the planet's oceans for 450 million years.</p>

<p>These otherworldly creatures have bright blue blood which replaced rabbit testing to become essential for testing the safety of biomedical products in the 1970s as it clots in the presence of harmful bacterial components called endotoxins.</p>

<p>The microsatellite, named MP42 was launched into space in the month of April this year. It hitched a ride on SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We wanted to highlight the vulnerability of our planet and the importance of Earth observation by satellites, especially for monitoring environment and climate changes," said NanoAvionics, the company which owns the microsatellite. The company has even published the video on Yutube. Check it out.</p>

<p>The SDO recorded the 35-minute partial solar eclipse from space on Wednesday (June 29).</p>

<p>Over the last 12 years, observations made SDO have been extremely useful to understand the Sun</p>

<p>"SDO observations start in the interior of the Sun with the solar dynamo -- the churning of the Sun’s interior that creates its magnetic field and drives space weather. Further out, SDO observes the solar surface to directly measure the magnetic field and the solar atmosphere to understand how magnetic energy is linked to the interior and converted to space weather-causing events. Finally, SDO measures the extreme ultraviolet irradiance of the Sun that is a key driver to the structure and composition of the Earth’s upper atmosphere," says NASA on its website.</p>

NASA captures breathtaking image of an eclipse from space

<p>A double-crater formed due to crash of a mystery spacecraft has piqued scientific interest. This crater has been found on the Moon. The eastern crater measures 59 feet (18 metres) across and a western crater measures 52.5 feet (16 metres) across.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scientists expected a crater to be formed as they knew an unknown piece of space junk crashed into the Moon last year. But here's the thing, no other previous crash of any space junk has formed twin craters like this one.</p>

<p>NASA has said that the double crater was 'unexpected'.</p>

<p>"The double crater was unexpected and may indicate that the rocket body had large masses at each end. Typically a spent rocket has mass concentrated at the motor end; the rest of the rocket stage mainly consists of an empty fuel tank. Since the origin of the rocket body remains uncertain, the double nature of the crater may indicate its identity," NASA has said in its release.</p>

<p>So is there a possibility of a tentacle-y alien brooding on the Moon because his spacecraft crashed? Time will tell.</p>

"The double crater was unexpected and may indicate that the rocket body had large masses at each end. Typically a spent rocket has mass concentrated at the motor end; the rest of the rocket stage mainly consists of an empty fuel tank. Since the origin of the rocket body remains uncertain, the double nature of the crater may indicate its identity," NASA has said in its release. Mystery of 'red cap' on Pluto's moon finally solved

<p>Voyager spacecrafts have travelled further into space than any made-made space vehicle has ever gone. Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, launched in 1977, were meant to last just five years. But decades on, the spacecrafts have continued on their path sending back invaluable data never before obtained.</p>

<p>The spacecrafts are humankind's imprint on the space. The spacecrafts are so far away from Earth it takes 20 light hours and 33 minutes for a signal to travel from Voyager-1 to Earth. In case of Voyager 2, a signal takes 18 light hours to reach Earth. These spacecrafts are 23.3 billion kilometres from Earth.</p>

<p>These spacecrafts carrying out such a long journey is in itself a wonder and a thing to be proud of as a human. But the arduous and still continuing journey has begun to take its toll it seems. NASA has been gradually turning off equipments aboard both the spacecrafts.</p>

<p>Both of these probes are equipped with television cameras, infrared and ultraviolet sensors, magnetometers, plasma detectors, and cosmic-ray and charged-particle sensors. But 44 years on, the need to conserve energy in order to transmit data has assumed great priority.</p>

<p>NASA has hence been gradually switching of instruments one by one. It has been decades since NASA shut down cameras on the probes. And though it feels sad it appears that NASA would continue shutting down more instruments.</p>

<p>Though it is not certain, will there be a time when we would cut all contact with both spacecrafts? The Voyagers will continue their journey into nothingness of space even after that. They will bear testimony of human ingenuity as they would chart lonely path in the deep expanse.</p>

<p>Water and Hydroxyl have been found in the lunar soil samples taken from Apollo missions. Hydroxyl has one Hydrogen atom associated with one Oxygen atom.</p>

<p>Some theories say that Hydroxyl ion on the Moon are mainly formed due to Hydrogen atoms in the Solar wind that hits the Moon.</p>

<p>The research paper said that while one-third of the Hydroxyl ions in the sample taken by Chang'E came from solar wind, rest of the Hydroxyl content came from a mineral on the Moon called apatite. In other words, water found on Moon is native to the Moon!</p>

It's confirmed, water on Moon is native to it

<p>A star when alive and kicking, can literally be life-giver in its planetary system. Take for example the Solar System. The Sun created the planetary system, and endowed Earth with life itself. The planets peacefully revolve around the star and everything is somewhat alright.</p>

<p>But astronomers have now observed a dead star who is involved in what is being called 'cosmic cannibalism. The dead star is ripping apart its own planetary system.</p>

<p>The star is called G238-44. It is a White Dwarf star. Normal star the size of our Sun, on completion of its life, becomes a White Dwarf.</p>

<p>However, prior to becoming a White Dwarf, such star becomes Red Giant. In this phase, it expands rapidly and disrupts orbits of the planets revolving around it. This sends them on a haywire path.</p>

<p>What's happening, in this case, is that the planets are disintegrating due to the tidal forces of the White Dwarf. The result is total chaos with planetary material falling onto the White Dwarf star.</p>

<p>We may get to witness this cosmic process from afar but 5 billion years in future when&nbsp;the Solar System will meet the same fate.</p>

<p>"When a star like our Sun expands into a bloated red giant late in its life, it will shed mass by puffing off its outer layers. One consequence of this can be the gravitational scattering of small objects like asteroids, comets, and moons by any remaining large planets. Like pinballs in an arcade game, the surviving objects can be thrown into highly eccentric orbits," says NASA on its website.</p>

<p>"...5 billion years from now. Earth might be completely vaporized along with the inner planets. But the orbits of many of the asteroids in the main asteroid belt will be gravitationally perturbed by Jupiter and will eventually fall onto the white dwarf that the remnant Sun will become."</p>

<p>But apparently, mosquitoes do sleep. Researchers from the University of Cincinnati can attest to that. Not only this, they've also concluded that if mosquitoes are sleep deprived, they prefer to sleep rather than go on blood-sucking frenzy.</p>

<p>So in essence, mosquitoes do value sleep, but only their own.</p>

<p>To check when the mosquitoes slept, researchers released the insects in small enclosures inside laboratory and used cameras and infrared sensors to keep an eye on them.</p>

<p>They determined that mosquitoes slept when their abdomens dropped to ground and hind legs drooped.</p>

<p>Some of the mosquitoes were then kept in clear tubes and were sleep deprived for 12 hours. This was done by vibrating the tubes every few minutes. After that, their reaction to a possible host was tested by inserting a pad of artificial sweat.</p>

<p>It was found that sleep-deprived mosquitoes were markedly less interested in food and preferred instead to catch a few Zs.</p>

<p>The study has been published in Journal of Experimental Biology.</p>

<p>Such studies may be useful to control population of mosquitoes by knowing their body cycles.</p>

Doze over dine: Sleepy mosquitoes ignore food, says a study

<p>After the Astra rocket of NASA's hurricane monitoring satellites shut off before reaching the necessary altitude, the US space agency lost them.</p>

<p>NASA's Launch Services Program said on Twitter, "After a nominal first stage flight, the upper stage of the rocket shut down early and failed to deliver the TROPICS CubeSats to orbit."</p>

<p>Making observations more often than what is possible with current weather satellites," NASA described the TROPICS CubeSats as a constellation of six "shoe-box sized" satellites that will "study the formation and development of tropical cyclones in a post before the launch.</p>

<p>3C273, a quasar that lies at a distance of 2.4 billion light-years from Earth, is one of the most frequently observed sources with telescopes because it can be used as a standard of position in the sky.</p>

<p>It is the first quasar ever discovered, the brightest, and the best studied. Knowledge about 3C273 has been concentrated on its bright central nuclei, where most radio waves come from as has been known for decades as the most famous quasar.</p>

<p>To reduce the leakage of radio waves from 3C273 to the galaxy, the research team used a technique called self-calibration and reached an imaging dynamic range of 85000, an ALMA record for extragalactic objects.</p>

'Strongly bonded' male baboons hold each other back when it comes to finding a mate, study tells

<p>But do you know that as the aurora dances across the sky it produces a ghostly sound. An investigation into this suggests that this eerie sound is produced even aurora isn't visible in the sky.</p>

<p>This sound associated with the aurora has been mentioned in regional folktales and accounts shared by the local population.</p>

<p>Unto Laine, ac acoustics engineer from Alto University in Finland has been able to record these ghostly sounds. At EUROREGIO/BNAM2022 Joint Acoustics Conference in Denmark, Laine presented his findings.</p>

<p>"This cancels the argument that auroral sounds are extremely rare and that the aurora borealis should be exceptionally bright and lively," Laine says.</p>

<p>These sounds are apparently produced even when aurora isn't visible.</p>

<p>Animal science researcher Saho Takagi along with other researchers carried out the experiment. They selected cats who lived in households that had many cats. Each of these cats was then shown photos of other cats and when the photos were shown, a recording of the owner's voice taking name of the cat was played.</p>

<p>The recording would either play the cat's actual name (congruent condition) or some other cat's name (incongruent condition)</p>

<p>It was seen that cat responded differently in these both cases. It was also seen that incongruent conditions (when name of the cat didn't match that played in the recording) resulted in cats (looking at photo) stare for a longer time, as if puzzled due to mismatched information.<br />

<p>So this 'gold standard' star is named HD 222925. It is 1,460 light-years away from Earth. It's not completely made of gold but large number of elements. Scientists have been able to find 65 separate element in this star. That's the maximum number of elements found in a single object outside solar system. The star is at the end of its life as a red giant.</p>

<p>"To the best of my knowledge, that's a record for any object beyond our Solar System. And what makes this star so unique is that it has a very high relative proportion of the elements listed along the bottom two-thirds of the periodic table. We even detected gold," said astronomer Ian Roederer of the University of Michigan.</p>

<p>"These elements were made by the rapid neutron capture process. That's really the thing we're trying to study: the physics in understanding how, where and when those elements were made."</p>

This star is made of gold, but it's dying

<p>NASA has detected a monster marsquake on Earth's neighbour. We already know that the red planet experiences quakes regularly. But this one, detected by NASA's InSight Mars Lander is mother of them all.</p>

<p>The marsquake was of 'magnitude 5 temblor'. It took place on May 4, 2022. The marsquake took place on 1222nd Martian day of the InSight lander's mission, said NASA in a press release.</p>

<p>Last most intense marsquake was of the magnitude 4.2 and it took place on August 25, 2021.</p>

<p>The latest 'monster' marsquake would be a medium-sized quake if it took place on Earth but on Mars, it is close to the "upper limit of what scientists hoped to see on Mars during InSight’s mission" said NASA.</p>

Scientists will be analyzing this data to learn new things about Mars for years to come.”</p>

But this one, detected by NASA's InSight Mars Lander is mother of them all. The marsquake was of 'magnitude 5 temblor'. It took place on May 4, 2022. The marsquake took place on 1222nd Martian day of the InSight lander's mission, said NASA in a press release. Last most intense marsquake was of the magnitude 4.2 and it took place on August 25, 2021. The latest 'monster' marsquake would be a medium-sized quake if it took place on Earth but on Mars, it is close to the "upper limit of what scientists hoped to see on Mars during InSight’s mission" said NASA. <p>The collision of galaxies may not be a catastrophic event as movie would have us believe. The collision can be a beautiful cosmic dance!.</p>

<p>Photo of such a cosmic dance has been captured. It is a collision between a barred spiral galaxy and a lenticular galaxy. These two galaxies are merging to form a single galaxy. As they swirl around each other, both of them are affecting one another.</p>

<p>NGC 1512, the galaxy in the middle&nbsp;of the picture, is larger of the two galaxies. It is a barred spiral type of galaxy. NGC 1510, is a smaller lenticular (lens-like) galaxy which can be seen in lower right part of the image.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Both of these galaxies are located in the direction of the constellation Horologium. The pair is about 60 million light-years away from Earth.</p>

<p>Scientists have identified concerning changes that remain with astronauts between missions in a new study published in Scientific Reports.</p>

<p>They have highlighted that humans are exposed to extreme environmental stressors during spaceflight and return with alterations in brain structure.</p>

<p>It is the first study to evaluate the effects of spaceflight on perivascular spaces (PVSs) within the brain, which are believed to facilitate fluid drainage and brain homeostasis.</p>

<p>During the study, 15 astronauts underwent MRI scans, twice prior to launch and four times following their return to Earth after six-month missions to the International Space Station.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Juan Piantino, a neurologist at the Oregon Health and Science University, "Experienced astronauts may have reached some kind of homeostasis."</p>

<p>"We all adapted to use gravity in our favor," says Piantino.</p>

<p>"Nature didn't put our brains in our feet – it put them high up. Once you remove gravity from the equation, what does that do to human physiology?" he added.</p>

<p>After their analysis, researchers found that novice astronauts exhibited an increase in PVS volume from pre- to post-flight, whereas experienced flyers did not.</p>

<p>"It also forces you to think about some basic fundamental questions of science and how life evolved here on Earth," says Piantino.</p>

<p>For women, somewhat opposite was found to be effective. While what they dressed played a part, a friendly touch during conversation was found to be effective as well.</p>

<p>But one thing that beat most other factors in terms of attractiveness. Both, men and women rated humour and ability to crack a joke high on the scale of attractiveness.</p>

<p>Being cranky after not sleeping well is quite a common thing but scientists have gone one step ahead and concluded that if we don't sleep well, it actually changes the way we see other people (yikes!).</p>

<p>So researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden recruited two groups of 45 participants each. One group was allowed to sleep for 8 hours. And the other group spent a sleepless night.</p>

<p>Each of the participants in both the groups was shown photos with people having variety of expressions. Eye sensing trackers were used to observe their gaze.</p>

<p>It was found that the 'sleepless' group participants were less likely to fix their gaze on the expressions of the people in the photos. They even found them less attractive. Scientists say that not fixing gaze at expressions of a person made the 'sleepless' group more vulenrable to misjudging social cues like smile, anger etc. This had the potential of creating obstacles in their interactions with other people in daily life.</p>

<p>"Since facial expressions are crucial to understanding the emotional state of others, spending less time fixating on faces after acute sleep loss may increase the risk that you interpret the emotional state of others inaccurately or too late," says sleep researcher Lieve van Egmond from Uppsala University in Sweden.</p>

<p>The research has been published in tge journal Nature and Science of Sleep.</p>

<p>The pulsar and the binary system in question is named ZTF J1406+1222. This binary system has the shortest orbital period. This brings the companion star right into the line of fire of the rapidly revolving pulsar.</p>

Scientists find 'black widow' pulsar that's eating a star

<p>Machines are learning things fast and replacing humans at a faster rate than ever before. Fresh development in this direction is a robot that can taste food. And not only it can taste the food, it can do so while making the dish it is preparing! This further leads to the robot having the ability to recognise taste of the food in various stages of chewing when a human eats the food.</p>

<p>The robot chef was made by Mark Oleynik, a Russian mathematician and computer scientist. Researchers at the Cambride University trained the robot to 'taste' the food as it cooks it.</p>

<p>The robot had already been trained to cook egg omelets. The researchers at Cambridge University added a sensor to the robot which can recognise different levels of saltiness.</p>

<p>The robot then tasted nine different variations of scrambled eggs at three different levels of the chewing process.</p>

<p>The researchers at Cambridge University have published a paper in journal Frontiers in Robotics &amp; AI.</p>

<p>"We wanted to replicate a more realistic process of chewing and tasting in a robotic system, which should result in a tastier end-product," said Dr Arsen Abdulali. Dr Abdulali was quoted by BBC. He further said that in the experiments, the robot was able to 'see' the difference in the food as it chewed.</p>
