<p>"Very distant galaxies are real mines of information about the past and future evolution of our universe," said First Author Marika Giulietti. She was quoted by EurekaAlert.</p>

<p>"However, studying them is very challenging. They are very compact and therefore difficult to observe. Also, because of the distance, we receive very weak light from them. The cause of this obscuration is the massive presence of interstellar dust, which intercepts visible light from young stars, makes it difficult to detect with optical instruments, and re-emits it at greater wavelengths where it can be observed only with powerful interferometers in the (sub-)millimeter and radio wavebands."</p>

<p>"In this way, large celestial bodies act as a kind of enormous cosmic lens that makes the 'background' galaxies appear larger and brighter, allowing them to be identified and studied." Over the past decade, many observation programmes have been carried out with this approach. "About a hundred have been discovered so far, but there could be many more."<br />

<p>The National Health Service (NHS) has started a clinical trial of a pioneering treatment technique which is aimed at extending the lives of people with brain tumours. A report by The Guardian on Thursday (February 2) said that a team including radiologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists and physicists are using detailed MRI scans and highly-targeted radiotherapy before surgery to reduce the likelihood of tumours growing back quickly, thereby helping patients to live longer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At present, patients with brain tumours across the globe undergo surgery first, then radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy. Brain tumours are very difficult to treat. The Guardian report said that treatment options have not improved significantly in decades and despite extensive research, the standard procedure (surgery first, then radiotherapy and then chemotherapy) has never been challenged.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the team behind this clinical trial – codenamed POBIG (Pre-Operative Brain Irradiation in Glioblastoma) – at the Christie NHS foundation trust in Manchester, is planning to overturn the standard medical procedure.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr Gerben Brost, a radiation oncologist at the Christie and a senior lecturer at the University of Manchester, who is leading the team, said that the study is a significant milestone in brain cancer research and the culmination of 10 years of work for him.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The order of radiotherapy and surgery should be challenged, and this could be the breakthrough we have been working towards for decades,” Dr Brost said. The trial is currently at an early stage but Dr Brost said the results so far had been “very encouraging”.</p>

<p>But he pointed out that surgery would always be essential. “Remnant tumour cells remain growing, potentially even more aggressively post-surgery in the recovery period, before the patient is given the standard course of radiotherapy,” he said, adding that better strategies are desperately needed to target all tumour cells at an earlier stage.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“As a tumour is likely to respond better to radiotherapy before the operation, we hope, by giving highly-targeted radiotherapy before surgery, to stop the tumour from growing back so quickly to improve outcomes and extend lives,” the team leader also said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Patients who are part of the trial undergo an MRI which helps the surgeons estimate where remnant cells are most likely to be left after they operate. The report said that a single dose of radiation is aimed precisely at that area, and patients then have surgery followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.</p>

<p>Joel Rush, a director of a digital marketing agency he co-founded with his wife, is one of the first patients in the trial. Rush was diagnosed with glioblastoma after experiencing severe headaches and pain in October last year. “The doctors explained the reasons for using radiotherapy before surgery – made absolute sense – so I was very happy to participate in the trial,” he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr Brost, meanwhile, said that the team was pleased with how Joel Rush responded to the treatment and the results so far are encouraging.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The stars that have been discovered are RR Lyrae variables. They orbit our galaxy through the galactic halo and are 1 million light-years away from the centre of the galaxy.</p>

<p>These stars are interesting to study. But what scientists have found handy is that their use as 'space candles' to determine distances and to find out more stars, if any, in the lonesome stellar halo part outside our galaxy.</p>

<p>"This study is redefining what constitutes the outer limits of our galaxy," said Astronomer Raja GuhaThakurta of the University of California Santa Cruz</p>

<p>"[It] and Andromeda are both so big, there's hardly any space between the two galaxies."</p>

But a new study has revealed that we may have a pleasant distraction while we'd otherwise be busy digging our graves. Climate Change is going to give rise to more rainbows!</p>

<p>The researchers have found that frequency of rainbows is going to increase across the globe by as much as 5 per cent. &nbsp;This research studied less obvious effects of the climate change.</p>

<p>For the study, the researchers made use of global climate data, crowd-sourced images and a computer model. The researchers found that 66 to 79 per cent regions of the world will witness rainbows in greater frequency.</p>

<p>"Living in Hawai'i, I felt grateful that stunning, ephemeral rainbows were a part of my daily life," says land systems scientist Kimberly Carlson, who is now at New York University. "I wondered how climate change might affect such rainbow viewing opportunities."</p>

<p>Tens of thousands of crowdsourced photos were analysed. Data was gathered for photos for which location data was available. A computer model was trained to make predictions after feeding it this data and more like precipitation, cloud cover and angle of the Sun. The model then made predictions.</p>

<p>It was found that regions at higher elevation would experience &nbsp;more rainbows than those at lower altitudes.</p>

<p>But this is hardly to bring a smile to our faces as climate change is otherwise going to spell disaster. &nbsp;It's wise to steer clear.</p>

<p>Earth's magnetic field is like a silent protector. As we go about living our daily life, the magnetic lines of force stretch and wrap around Earth and form a protective shield that guards us against deadly cosmic radiation and even charged solar particles. Of many things from Earth's bounty nurturing&nbsp;life, its magnetic field is one of the most important one.</p>

<p>The silent protector has now spoken, not in a language that we would understand but in eerie tones that remind us that celestial processes mean business.&nbsp;</p>

<p>We need not worry. It is still the benevolent, protective shield that keeps us safe. But that doesn't reduce the scary quotient of the sound.</p>

<p>NASA's 'Lunar Flashlight' will use a laser which it will shine of the surface of the Moon to detect water. This satellite orbit the Moon at a farthest distance of 70,000 km from the surface. While at its closest, the staellite will be just 15 km away from the lunar surface.</p>

<p>“The satellite will be put on a trajectory that will take about three months to reach its science orbit. Then Lunar Flashlight will try to find water ice on the surface of the Moon in places that nobody else has been able to look at,” John Baker, the mission’s project manager, said in a statement.</p>

<p>“Rats are typically quite curious and like to explore – and that is key for search and rescue,” says Donna Kean, a behavioural research scientist and leader of the project. She was quoted by CNN.</p>

<p>Rats also have adventurous spirit and quickly move around even in tight places.</p>

<p>The rats are currently in initial stages of training. Right now, they have to locate a person in an empty room, trigger a beeper attached to the vest they are wearing and return to the starting point.</p>

<p>NASA has posted images of 'pillars of creation' clicked by James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). These 'pillars' are huge structures of gas and dust that are teeming with stars.</p>

<p>The twinkling of thousands of stars illuminates the telescope's first shot of the gigantic gold, copper and brown columns standing in the midst of the cosmos.</p>

<p>Bright red lava-like spots can be seen at the ends of several pillars.</p>

<p>"These are ejections from stars that are still forming," only a few hundred thousand years old, NASA said in a statement.</p>

<p>These "young stars periodically shoot out supersonic jets that collide with clouds of material, like these thick pillars," added NASA.</p>

<p>These 'pillars of creation' in the Eagle Nebula in Milky Way Galaxy. The nebula is 6,500 light years away from Earth.</p>

<p>The pillars were first captured by Hubble Space Telescope, humanity's original 'eye-in-the-sky'. They were clicked first in 1995 and then again in 2014.</p>

<p>But thanks to Webb's infrared capabilities, the newer telescope -- launched into space less than a year ago -- can peer through the opacity of the pillars, revealing many new stars forming.</p>

<p>"By popular demand, we had to do the Pillars of Creation" with Webb, Klaus Pontoppidan, the science program manager at the Space Telescope Science Institute, said Wednesday on Twitter.</p>

<p>A 'cosmic burp' has drawn scientists' attention. Not that such cosmic burps are uncommon in the Universe, but this one's a bit different.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Black holes devour everything that comes within their gravitational grip. A black hole can even gobble up a star. When a star ventures too close to a black hole, it undergoes 'spagettification', that is, it is stretched vertically and compressed horizontally. The star is then gobbled up by the black hole bit by bit. Whatever stellar material the black hole is unable to eat up is&nbsp;thrown out in the Universe. This is called a cosmic burp.</p>

<p>So what's different about the one in question?</p>

<p>A black hole 665 million light years away from Earth ate up a star in 2018. A cosmic burp usually occurs close to eating up of the star. But this black hole ate the star in 2018, and gave a burp in 2021.&nbsp;</p>

<p>What is the reason behind it? We don't know it yet.</p>

<p>'This caught us completely by surprise,' said Yvette Cendes, a research associate at the Center for Astrophysics and lead author on the study of this cosmic burp.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'No one has ever seen anything like this before.'</p>

<p>This study has been published in the Astrophysical Journal.</p>

<p>A new facility in India's aerospace hub Bengaluru will henceforth be manufacturing the sophisticated cryogenic and semi-cryogenic engines that are meant to power Indian rockets. Known as the Integrated Cryogenic Engine Manufacturing Facility, this facility belongs to India's state-run Aerospace and Defence firm Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Under a single roof, this 4500sq meter facility will cater to the entire cryogenic rocket engine manufacturing needs of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).&nbsp;</p>

<p>This new facility has 70 high-tech equipment and testing apparatus for manufacturing CE20 Cryogenic engines and SE2000 cryogenic engines for Indian rockets. While the CE20 engines find use in the final stage of the GSLV Mk3 rocket, the SCE-2000 semi-cryogenic engine is meant to be used in the SC-120 rocket stage which is being developed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to HAL, it was in 2013 that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed with ISRO for establishing the facility for manufacturing of Cryogenic Engine modules at HAL, Aerospace Division. The MOU for the Cryogenic Engine facility was subsequently amended in the year 2016 for the setting up of the Integrated Cryogenic Engine Manufacturing Facility (ICMF) with an investment of Rs.208 crores.</p>

<p>If stargazers look towards Jupiter in the night sky this week with their binoculars or&nbsp;telescopes, they are in for a treat as per the US space agency.</p>

<p>University of Southern Queensland astrophysics professor Jonti Horner believes that Jupiter is rising at sunset and setting at sunrise and is pretty much opposite the sun in the sky.</p>

<p>Making Jupiter appear bigger and brighter than any other time of the year, this happens once in every 13 months.</p>

<p>Since 1963, the Earth is at its closest to Jupiter which will make for an "extraordinary" view as per NASA.</p>

NASA says Earth making its closest approach to Jupiter. Here's how to see it

<p>A new study has revealed that a genetically-engineered herpes treatment eradicates tumours in terminally-ill cancer patients.</p>

<p>Rallying the immune system, the new therapy infects and destroys cancer cells, according to scientists at the Institute for Cancer Research in London.</p>

<p>Shrinking the tumours of one-quarter of patients with end-of-life cancer, early trials to assess the safety of the therapy were successful.</p>

<p>Causing cancer cells to burst from within, the genetically engineered virus is injected directly into the tumour where it multiplies.</p>

<p>Giving the body more of a chance to fight off cancer, it blocks a protein called CTLA-4 which dials down the immune system.</p>

Enceladus is a frozen world the surface of which is covered with ice. Scientists think that there are oceans of liquid water below the surface, oceans that possible have life within them.</p>

<p>Now, modelling has indicated that the ocean on Enceladus is rich in dissolved phosphorus, which is an essential ingredient for life. The study has been published in &nbsp;Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).</p>

<p>“Enceladus is one of the prime targets in humanity’s search for life in our solar system. In the years since NASA’s Cassini spacecraft visited the Saturn system, we have been repeatedly blown away by the discoveries made possible by the collected data,” said Christopher Glein, co-author of the paper, in a press statement. He is an extraterrestrial oceanography expert.</p>

<p>“What we have learned is that the plume contains almost all the basic requirements of life as we know it. While the bioessential element phosphorus has yet to be identified directly, our team discovered evidence for its availability in the ocean beneath the moon’s icy crust,” added Glein.</p>

<p>Presence of water significantly increases chances for life thriving on a planet or a satellite. There are many frozen worlds in our Solar System. Europa, a satellite of Jupiter is another example of a frozen world that scientists suspect has a liquid ocean under the surface.</p>

How many ants are there on Earth? Scientists have an estimate

<p>Our search for exoplanets continues. With the help of latest technology, we have been building powerful telescopes that can not only scan the skies for what's visible, but also those that can pinpoint developments in lights that are not visible to human eyes. Till now, 5084 extrasolar planets have been confirmed. 3,811 planetary systems outside our Solar System have been found. What's more, there are another 8912 candidates awaiting confirmation.</p>

<p>But it has been for the first time that scientists have made a 3D structure of binary system with a planet.</p>

<p>A binary system involves two stars who orbit each other. Binary system can also have planets revolving around one or both the stars.</p>

<p>In a recently concluded study, an international team of astronomers made use of National Science Foundation's (NSF) Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) network to detect a Jupiter-like planet in a binary system (GJ 896AB). The binary system is just 20 light-years away from Earth.</p>

<p>The team used a technique called astrometry to detect the planet. The same method allowed thes scientists to create 3-dimensional architecture of the system.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The aerospace company, founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos, has used the same kind of rocket and capsule to carry paying passengers on 10-minute rides to the edge of space.</p>

<p>Since the launch of Blue Origin's New Shepard, the company has carried 31 people to the edge of space, with Bezos being one of them.</p>

<p>A stunning image showing exquisite details of the Sun's surface has been released by the National Science Foundation (NSF), which is taken&nbsp;by the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) in Hawaii. The image shows the Sun's chromosphere, which is the layer of its atmosphere just above its surface.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NSF said that the first images of the chromosphere were taken with the world's most powerful solar telescope, which is located on land of spiritual and cultural significance to the Native Hawaiian people, on June 3, 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It further noted that the image showed a region 82,500 kilometres across at a resolution of 18km. This image is taken at 486.13 nanometers using the hydrogen-beta line from the Balmer series.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The NSF said that the telescope is close to the completion of the first year of its Operations Commissioning Phase (OCP), and it is delivering on its promise to reveal the Sun in ways the world has never seen before.&nbsp;</p>

World's most powerful solar telescope captures stunning image of Sun's surface, shows its exquisite details

<p>In a new study conducted by the University of Gothenburg, scientists have found that letting children play with hand-me-down plastic toys could constitute a health risk.</p>

<p>For the study, researchers at the university tested a large number of old toys and dress-up items made of plastic.</p>

<p>After a detailed analysis, they found that 84 per cent of the items were found to contain toxins that can disrupt growth and development and reproductive capacities in children.</p>

<p>It comes after the European Parliament adopted a Circular Economy Action Plan to discourage wasteful behaviour that drains the Earth's finite resources.</p>

<p>In an attempt to protect the health and safety of children, the EU legislation regulated the permissible quantities of a number of chemical substances found in toys.</p>

<p>Under the Toy Safety Directive, the permissible limit values for new toys are 0.15 per cent by weight for short-chain chlorinated paraffins and 0.1 per cent by weight for phthalates.</p>

Astronomers have found exoplanet with oceans deeper than Earth's

Before an asteroid wiped most of them off the face of the planet, dinosaurs were ruling almost every food chain and food web. <p>Now another, enormous 'saur' has been found in Morocco. Perhaps in a acknowledgement to the predator, its fossil has been found alongside that of its last meal.</p>

<p>The mosasaur, or the animal that has been found, lived 66 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. The announcement of discovery of the fossil has been made in the journal Cretaceous Research on August 24.</p>

<p>The mosasaur, or Thalassotitan atrox, was an apex predator in the oceans. It grew up to 40 feet in length</p>

<p>"Thalassotitan was an amazing, terrifying animal," said Dr. Nick Longrich, lead author of the study and senior lecturer from the Milner Centre for Evolution at the University of Bath in a statement.</p>

<p>"Imagine a komodo dragon crossed with a great white shark crossed with a T. rex crossed with a killer whale," said Longrich as quoted by the Newsweek.</p>

<p>"They were wiped out by the asteroid impact, just like the dinosaurs," Longrich added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"They seem to have been active, even warm-blooded animals, and this and their large size meant they needed a lot of food. When the debris from the asteroid blocked out the sun, photosynthesis shut down, plankton stopped growing, and the food chain just sort of fell apart. The marine ecosystem was hit extremely hard; a few sea turtles survived and sharks survived pretty well; most marine reptiles and big fish went extinct."</p>

<p>In a recent study published on Wednesday (August 24) in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, researchers said that they attempted to examine the effects of psilocybin on any type of addiction.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A senior study author and psychiatrist Dr Michael Bogenschutz, who is the director of the NYU Langone Center for Psychedelic Medicine, said in a news conference that people who underwent two psychedelic mushrooms "trips" with the help of a psychotherapist reduced "their days of heavy drinking by 83% over eight months."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study found that in the double-blind randomised clinical trial with 93 participants, the percentage of heavy drinking days during 32 weeks of follow-up was significantly lower in the psilocybin group as compared to the diphenhydramine group.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In simple terms, the results of the trial showed that "psilocybin administered in combination with psychotherapy produced robust decreases in the percentage of heavy drinking days".&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers collected the hair and fingernail samples of the candidates to confirm reports of abstinence. Bogenschutz said that twice as many as those in the placebo group were able to abstain.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bogenschutz also said, "If these effects hold up in future trials, psilocybin will be a real breakthrough in the treatment of alcohol use disorder."</p>

<p>New research published on Tuesday (August 23) sheds light upon those with striking resemblances. It says they might share many genetic variants, beyond those that shape the appearance of the face and body.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the research, the lookalikes may even have similarities in other general aspects of their life and personality traits.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A paper titled "Look-alike humans identified by facial recognition algorithms show genetic similarities" is published in the journal Cell Reports. It mentions that doppelgängers tend to share some of the same genetic variants associated with both physical and behavioural or lifestyle traits.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A team of researchers characterised in detail a set of "look-alike" humans, who are defined by facial recognition algorithms, for their multi-omics landscape.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And after the analysis, they can report that these individuals share similar genotypes and differ in their DNA methylation and microbiome landscape.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Manel Esteller, a researcher from the Josep Carreras Leukemia Research Institute in Barcelona, Spain and his colleagues explored their interest to understand the other similarities these pairs might share.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To conduct the research, the team used images of 32 sets of doubles from Canadian artist François Brunelle, who has reportedly been documenting doppelgangers for years. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Their images ran through facial recognition software in order to analyse the similarities between each pair.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Out of the total, 16 couples showed uncanny resemblance to each other, so much that they looked like real-life identical twins.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After that, the researcher tested the pairs with similarities using sophisticated DNA tests and lifestyle surveys. They yearned to find similarities other than their appearance. &nbsp;</p>

It says they might share many genetic variants, beyond those that shape the appearance of the face and body. As per the research, the lookalikes may even have similarities in other general aspects of their life and personality traits. A paper titled "Look-alike humans identified by facial recognition algorithms show genetic similarities" is published in the journal Cell Reports. It mentions that doppelgängers tend to share some of the same genetic variants associated with both physical and behavioural or lifestyle traits. <p>Almost everyone who has slightest interest in history of life knows this. But a latest observation points at the possibility of the killer asteroid (named Chicxulub) may have been accompanied by a smaller asteroid. If the observation and the hypothesis is accepted, it will update our&nbsp;knowledge of pre-history.</p>

<p>The scientific study has been published in scientific journal Science Advances.</p>

<p>“The idea that [Chicxulub] had help — for want of a better phrase — would have really added insult to serious injury,” says study coauthor Veronica Bray. She is a planetary scientist at the University of Arizona in Tucson.</p>

<p>The impact crater due to this asteroid is 8 km wide and has been buried hundreds of metres below the sea off the coast of west Africa.</p>

<p>Unlike Chicxulub, scientist think that this particular asteroid did not have a huge global impact. Chicxulub asteroid caused tsunamis measuring hundreds of metres in height and kicked up massive amount of dust. This second asteroid is not considered to have caused such a catastrophic effect.</p>

<p>There may not have been a movie on this but rats that are being studied in University of Richmond in the US can drive around in cars, quite literally!</p>

<p>Well, to be fair, these are not exactly Porsche they are driving. The 'cars' they are driving are made of empty plastic boxes. But rats acquiring skill to drive a vehicle, however small, is an achievement in itself.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kelly Lambert at the University of Richmond make these tiny cars. The cars are made of transparent plastic boxes and have aluminium floors. There are three copper bars inside the car that the rats can touch. Whenever the rat touches a bar, it completes a circuit and the car moves. The bar on the left moves the car to left. The bar on the right moves the car to the right.</p>

<p>When we say Mars, the first thing that crosses our minds is a red wasteland. Mars is almost always associated with the colour red. It's quite natural as the red colour of the planet is perceptible in the night sky even with naked eyes. If someone says Mars is blue, we are sure to dismiss the opinion almost instantly.</p>

<p>But now NASA, the space agency which has multiple rovers on the red planet and an orbitter around it has released some images in which clear blue streaks are visible on the planet's surface. The image has been captured by Mars Reconnaissance Orbitter (MRO) so it has captured an area on the martian surface that spans hundreds of metres. Each pixel in this image is equal to 25 feet on martian surface.</p>

<p>The blue streaks on the martian surface are a beautiful sight. The martian region visible in these images is called Gamboa Crater. It is located in the northern hemisphere of the planet.</p>

<p>So why is the red planet so blue?</p>

<p>The answer lies in the way this image was processed. This is what is called a 'false colour'. The blue region is actually as red as the planet is but has been coloured blue due to slight variations in the frequency of the reflected light. The region is NOT actually blue.</p>

<p>So is it just a way to make an image more beautiful and nothing else? No.</p>

<p>The regions streaked in blue colour indicate presence of geologic structures. When an analyst studies this image it will be helpful for him or her to quickly know where are these geologic structures located. This may help us to understand martian geology in greater detail.</p>

NASA posts beautiful martian image showing 'blue' region of the red planet 

<p>We Earth-dwellers have Earth-centric idea of the Universe and that's probably fine. From sunrise to sunset (and beyond), we eat, drink, work and sleep on one single planet. Human colonies on Moon and Mars are still in the concept stage. Till then, its one blue planet for us.</p>

<p>Due to our Earth-centric thoughts, its hard to imagine that the largest canyon in the Solar System is not on Earth. Sorry Grand Canyon but a canyon system on Mars takes the cake here. And European Space Agency has clicked a picture of it.</p>

<p>Valles Marineris, the canyon system on Mars, is longer, wider and deepr than Grand Canyon. It is 4000 kilometres long, 200 kilometre wide and upto 7 km deep. These dimensions are much greater than the Grand Canyon. To put things in Indian perspective, the length of Valles Marineris is greater than the distance between Kashmir to Kanyakumari.</p>

Left portion of the image is southern direction. 840-kilometre-long lus Chasma is visible there and 805-kilometre-long Tithonium Chasma is visible in the right side of the image. Incredible surface details are present in this high resolution image that captures Valles Marineris that is up to 7 kilometres deep.</p>

<p>The blackened portion in the Tithonium Chasma is black sand. Scientists think that the sand must have come from Tharsis volcanic region.</p>

'Grand Canyon on Mars': ESA clicks Martian feature that's bigger than the original thing

<p>Dogs never cease to surprise us. They seem to read our emotions and be empathetic. Thousands of years with humankind may have made them our best friends, but we have just begun to understand them. A research has now said that dogs may be able to 'see' through their powerful sense of smell.</p>

<p>That dogs sense of smell is much superior to humans is a known fact. Their nose has more than 220 million odour-detecting cels, more than four times than those in humans. This is pretty much known.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But the new research suggests that smell may form much greater part in dog's perception of its surroundings than thought before.</p>

<p>The researchers scanned brains of 23 domestic dogs with the help of a special MRI. They found that connections between regions of the brain that processed smell and vision were especially strong.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We've never seen this connection between the nose and the occipital lobe, functionally the visual cortex in dogs, in any species," Cornell University neuroimaging researcher Pip Johnson explains. He was quoted by Cornell Chronicle</p>

<p>"It was really consistent. And size-wise, these tracts were really dramatic compared to what is described in the human olfactory system, more like what you'd see in our visual systems."</p>

<p>What this means is that dogs form spatial awareness, a mental picture of surrounding more using their sense of smell like we do using vision.</p>

<p>This perhaps explains why even blind dogs can play a game of fetch.</p>

<p>The research has been published in The Journal of Neuroscience.</p>

The researchers scanned brains of 23 domestic dogs with the help of a special MRI. They found that connections between regions of the brain that processed smell and vision were especially strong. "We've never seen this connection between the nose and the occipital lobe, functionally the visual cortex in dogs, in any species," Cornell University neuroimaging researcher Pip Johnson explains. He was quoted by Cornell Chronicle "It was really consistent. And size-wise, these tracts were really dramatic compared to what is described in the human olfactory system, more like what you'd see in our visual systems." What this means is that dogs form spatial awareness, a mental picture of surrounding more using their sense of smell like we do using vision. <p>NASA has shared another photo and this has bowled everyone over as usual. In this picture, Pluto is replete in resplendent colours and for a&nbsp;space body it does look rather unique.</p>

<p>NASA has shared the image on Instagram.</p>

<p>"Where does the rainbow end? Pluto isn't really a psychedelic riot of colors - this translated color image was created by New Horizons scientists to highlight the many subtle color differences between the planet's distinct regions," NASA said in the post.</p>
