Scientists for the very first time have detected quartz particles within the atmosphere of an exoplanet. The groundbreaking discovery was made by astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope.

Quartz particles are found in abundance on Earth, the moon and other bodies of the Milky Way galaxy. Silicate particles have earlier been detected in exoplanets but they are magnesium-based, not quartz.&nbsp;

“We fully expected to see magnesium silicates,” said an author of the study published Monday in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, Hannah Wakeford.

“But what we’re seeing instead are likely the building blocks of those, the tiny ‘seed’ particles needed to form the larger silicate grains we detect in cooler exoplanets and brown dwarfs,” he added.

<h2>About the exoplanet</h2>

The exoplanet here in question is known as WASP-17b, a gas giant located 1,300 light-years away from Earth and first discovered in 2009.

The planet is extremely hot and is tidally locked to its star. This means that while one side of the planet experiences searing temperatures, the permanent dark side remains chilling cool.

According to David Grant, the lead study author, “WASP-17 b is extremely hot — around 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit (1,500 degrees Celsius) — and the pressure where the quartz crystals form high in the atmosphere is only about one-thousandth of what we experience on Earth’s surface.”

<h2>How scientists discovered quartz at WASP-17b?</h2>

A team of scientists made the discovery during a 10-hour window, as the exoplanet crossed in front of its star and allowed the experts to get a filtered view of the starlight.

Darwin's 'survival of the fittest' is a popular law quoted by many. However, it has a limitation, it is only applicable to the living. However, as per new research, it may actually also be applicable to the non-living, like minerals, stars and hurricanes.&nbsp;

<h2>Nature's 'missing law'</h2>

Scientists and philosophers have proposed the existence of a fundamental law, which they speculate governs the non-living world, similar to the popular concept of "survival of the fittest" in Darwinian evolution.&nbsp;

They've labelled this proposed law as nature's 'missing law,' and they suggest that various non-living systems, such as minerals, stars, and hurricanes, are composed of multiple components that can combine in diverse ways, with some configurations persisting or lasting longer, while others do not. This, they suggest, is dependent on a number of selection pressures.

<h2>Dynamic law</h2>

Dr Michael Wong, the lead author of the study from the Carnegie Institution for Science, highlighted the universality of this proposed law.

"Our proposal applies to static systems, like minerals, and also to dynamic systems, like hurricanes, stars and life," said Wong.

The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, introduced the concept of three distinct selection pressures that affects evolving systems: stability, novelty, and the ability to sustain fundamental processes.

"The functional information of a system will increase (i.e., the system will evolve) if many different configurations of the system are subjected to selection for one or more functions," write the researchers.

This perspective, as per Wong, underscores the idea that the cosmos is rooted in function and emphasises the crucial relationship between emerging functions and their environmental context.

"After all, Earth’s biosphere is the most complex evolving system we know of so far. We ought to ask ourselves: what functions are we promoting (or damaging) in our own evolving biosphere? 'Nature's missing law': Scientists propose 'survival of fittest' like law for non-living things

Do robots help with productivity at work? While the popular notion is that machines make lives easier at work, new research has discovered that robots give way to "social loafing".

<h2>What is social loafing?</h2>

Social loafing is a term used to describe a scenario where people work less hard if they think their other team members or, in this case robots, will cover up for them.

Researchers at the Technical University of Berlin, as per the Guardian, found that people come to see robots as a part of their team. As per their research, in such cases, when people see that technology is performing particularly well, they tend to feel like their own contributions would not be appreciated and scientists suggest this often leads to them taking a more laid-back approach.

&nbsp;
As Dietlind Helene Cymek, the study's lead author, puts it, "Teamwork is a mixed blessing."

"Working together can motivate people to perform well but it can also lead to a loss of motivation because the individual contribution is not as visible. We were interested in whether we could also find such motivational effects when the team partner is a robot," added Cymek.

The study has been published in the journal Frontiers in Robotics and AI.

<h2>Research methodology used by the scientists</h2>

The research team conducted an experiment to test this hypothesis. For this, they asked a group of workers to assess the quality of a series of tasks.&nbsp;

Half of the workers were told that the tasks had already been executed by a robot named Panda. Those workers didn't directly collaborate with the robot, but had heard it performing its operations and or could hear its operating sounds.

The workers were tasked with examining circuit boards for potential errors, and as they performed the task, researchers monitored their actions.&nbsp;

Initially, the researchers noticed no significant difference in the time taken by the two groups—those who were informed they were working with a robot and those who were not—in inspecting the circuit boards or the areas they scrutinised for errors.

However, upon analysing the error rates of the participants, the researchers discovered that those working alongside Panda identified fewer defects, especially after witnessing the robot effectively flagging numerous errors.&nbsp;

This phenomenon was attributed to a potential "looking but not seeing" effect, suggesting that people tend to be careless when they perceive a colleague or resource as reliable.

Working with robots makes people lazy. Here's what 'social loafing' means

NASA Psyche Asteroid&nbsp;Mission: The Psyche aircraft launched by NASA last week as the first mission to a metal asteroid is all set to blaze a literal blue trail. The spacecraft was launched towards an asteroid of the name.&nbsp;

This bright wake probe's remarkable propulsive system will switch within the first 100 days of the mission. Hall thruster is the mechanism which will propel the Pysche through space.&nbsp;

This thruster will glow blue as it ionizes xenon, a noble gas that will be used to move the spacecraft forward. The gas is also used in car headlights and plasma televisions. This is the first time such technology will be used and it has only been available for NASA spaceflight since 2015.&nbsp;

But why do engineers use this technology?

While planning space missions, engineers focus on efficiency which can be achieved through this technology. For this, the engineers turned to electric thrusters. These come in different variants. Scientists use ion and Hall thrusters.&nbsp;

Dan Geobel, NASA's Psyche chief engineer in a blog post said, "There are many different types of electric thrusters, almost as many as there are different makers of cars."&nbsp;

"They can probably be considered the Tesla versions of space propulsion," he added.&nbsp;

Ion thrusters use high electric voltages to make plasma and spew ions into space. NASA's Dawn mission used these ion thrusters to get to dwarf planet Ceres, but the space agency said that they're not the fastest.&nbsp;

On the other hand, the Hall thrusters use a magnetic field to swirl electrons in a circle and produce a beam of ions. They don't get good mileage but the Pysche team picked it because these thrusters allow them to make a smaller and therefore more efficient spacecraft.&nbsp;

The thrusters need power to work which they get from the sun via solar panels and something to ionize.&nbsp;

Now that the mission has been launched, the team will spend the next 100 days checking out all the spacecraft's systems to ensure they're ready for the journey.&nbsp;

If the mission is successful, then the Hall thrusters will likely make an appearance on upcoming space missions, said Steven Scott, the programme manager for the Psyche mission at the company Maxar. As per NASA experts, by August 2029, the spacecraft will begin exploring the asteroid that scientists think – because of its high metal content – may be the partial core of a planetesimal, a building block of an early planet.

Psyche asteroid mission to blaze an unusual blue trail across the solar system

The Sun is the driving force behind all life on earth. From the weather, ocean currents, climate, and seasons, all life depends on the star. What would happen if the star that provides our planet so much life dies?

For the first time, astronomers might have a clue. Here's what will happen.

<h2>A white dwarf</h2>

Scientists have, for the first time, studied a white dwarf - a star just like our sun that has exhausted its hydrogen reserves or nuclear fuel.

Our sun, as per National Geographic, is just an ordinary star; one of about 100 billion in our galaxy, the Milky Way.&nbsp;

Astronomers studied the stellar remnants that lie at the centre of a cloud of wreckage, gas and dust that astronomers call a planetary nebula.&nbsp;

It is located at around 4,500 light years from Earth, in the open star cluster Messier 37. Astronomers used Gran Telescopio Canarias on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands to study the cosmic graveyard full of stars, some of them dead.&nbsp;

Studying this white dwarf has provided scientists with vital information on how the once red-hot star died, and also provided insights into how our own solar system could look like in around five billion years.

<h2>From sun to a white dwarf</h2>

A dying sun, as per space.com, runs out of fuel that is intrinsic to its nuclear fusion processes and slowly swells into a red giant. The puffed-out outer layers then swallow inner planets — Earth is an inner planet to the Milky Way's sun.&nbsp;

Then, the star's shell of stellar material spreads out and cools, after which the sun becomes a planetary nebula, and eventually, its core turns into a fading white dwarf.

"The more massive a star is, the faster it consumes its nuclear fuel by fusing hydrogen into helium. So its life is shorter, and it evolves into a white dwarf faster," said Klaus Werner, the study team leader and a professor at the University of Tübingen in a statement.

The star they studied as per estimates had a mass equivalent to 2.8 times our Sun. It currently has only about 85 per cent of the mass of Earth's sun left, the rest, about 70 per cent of its original total mass, was lost during its lifetime.

Earth swallowed whole, sun a lifeless white giant; scientists predict what galaxy will look like in 5bn years

The European Space Agency has shared a stunning new video showing the vastness of Mars' gigantic 2,500 miles (4,023.36 km) long 'Labyrinth of Night' — a&nbsp;1190-kilometre-long valley (roughly the length of Italy).

<h2>'Labyrinth of Night'</h2>

The fascinating video visualises a flyover of the Mars Express' High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC). It has been created by using an image mosaic built over eight orbits.

A graben, as per the space agency, is a type of crust that forms when a block of the planet's crust drops between two faults, due to extension, or pulling, of the crust.

<h2>How are these spectacular features formed?</h2>

The intense volcanism in the nearby Tharsis region is to blame for the formation of these features. ESA explains that due to volcanism, large areas of the Martian crust arch upwards and "become stretched and tectonically stressed, leading to it thinning out, faulting and subsiding."

ESA mission Mars Express has been orbiting the barren planet for 20 years — since 2003. The mission objectives include mapping Mars' surface, and its minerals, a study of the tenuous atmosphere, probing what lies beneath the red planet's crust and exploring how various phenomena interact in the Martian environment.

An England-based private boarding school has appointed a 'unique' headmaster — an AI robot named Abigail Bailey.

Cottesmore School in West Sussex worked with an artificial intelligence developer to create their new principal headteacher.

<h2>What will the AI headmaster do?</h2>

Abigail Bailey, as the AI robot is named, will primarily help the school's headmaster, Tom Rogerson.

Talking to the Telegraph, Rogerson detailed that Abigail with provide him with advice and insights on a variety of issues, ranging from how to support fellow teachers and staff members, to helping students with learning disabilities like ADHD and writing school policies.

The headmaster said that Abigail was developed to have a "wealth of knowledge in machine learning and education management. Furthermore, Abigail has the ability to analyse vast amounts of data.

<h2>Will the AI headmaster take precedence over human teachers?</h2>

No. Talking to Telegraph, Rogerson said that having the robot around doesn't mean you don't ever seek counsel from humans.

He said,&nbsp;"Sometimes having someone or something there to help you is a very calming influence."

As per the 'human' headmaster, the school has the highest number of teachers in its 130-year history and the robot will not replace human teachers.

England-based prep school appoints AI robot as headmaster

"He was well versed in all major religions, both Indian and foreign. I have not seen many like him, who are able to talk about the Quran, Bible, Thirukkural and Bhagavad Gita with the same depth", Dr Madhavan Nair, former Chairman, ISRO, recalls about his Guru (mentor and guide), Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, in a recently-published autobiography.

October 15th is the Birth Anniversary of Dr. Kalam, the veteran aerospace and defence scientist, who later went on to serve as the President of India.&nbsp;

Having been an integral part of ISRO's growth trajectory from the Thumba days of the late 1960s, to the Chandrayaan-1 days in the first decade of the 21st century, Dr. Madhavan Nair has an immensely powerful story to tell via his memoir 'Rocketing Through the Skies'. Having known Dr. Kalam professionally and personally, Dr. Nair shares several lesser-known facets of Dr. Kalam, who is also admired as India's 'People's President'.

"A devout Muslim, he would perform Namaaz&nbsp;daily, fast during Ramadan, and read the Quran. He engaged with temples and churches with the same intensity. One could witness a rare mingling of many great Indian values in him,"&nbsp;Dr. Nair writes about Dr. Kalam. Interestingly, he also shares an anecdote from a Tirupati temple visit along with Dr. Kalam.

Before every rocket launch, the project director and a few others used to visit the Tirupati temple and make an offering of a small model of the rocket. It is a ritual followed even today. I had the opportunity to go to Tirupati with Dr. Kalam once, says Dr. Nair.

Still, he was deeply impressed with Dr. Kalam's knowledge of Hindu philosophy," reads a para from the book.

It also reveals that Dr. Kalam inherited his deep-rooted spirituality from his father Jainulabdeen Marakayar.

While delving into the depths of Science and Rocketry (later, missiles and nuclear weapons) and helping India progress in these domains, Dr. Kalam remained a deeply spiritual and religious individual, the book conveys.&nbsp;

'Science and spirituality, religion and rockets': Remembering Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

There are two kinds of telescopes that are used to peer towards the sky - Optical telescopes, which help capture faint, faraway light sources and enable their study; Radio telescopes, which use giant antennae to capture radio waves from afar and help derive data out of them.

While optical telescopes and observatories are more commonly known, they have a limitation of only operating during the night. However, Radio telescopes can capture radio signals round-the-clock.&nbsp;

Based in a South African desert, the MeerKAT radio telescope comprising 64 antennae is the largest and most sensitive of its kind in the world, so far.

Some interesting observations from this telescope have emerged, thanks to data processing software written by Indian techies.

Known as the 'Automated Radio Telescope Image Processing Pipeline'(ARTIP), it is meant to help process the huge amount of radio signal data generated by the telescope and convert it into data that can be used for scientific studies.&nbsp;

"There is a lot of noise (disturbance) in the radio signals, so that has to be cleaned up, signals have to be calibrated, data processing has to be carried out that's&nbsp;how the ARTIP software speeds up the process for scientists,"&nbsp;Chhaya Dhanani, Portfolio Head Engineering for Research, Thoughtworks, told WION.

A five-member team from Pune, India, working for this global software firm has designed and developed this software from scratch. We have been working on developing this software since 2017 and we had the first version released in 2020 and even now modifications are being made. The data processed using our software has also been released, Dhanani said.&nbsp;

Based on the data derived using our&nbsp;software, the science teams working on it have made multiple publications in international peer-reviewed journals. Among the discoveries made are of OH radicals in faraway galaxies and Rydberg atoms (massive hydrogen atoms) in a distant galaxy, she said. The software processed more than 1 Petabyte (1000Terabytes) of data to arrive at this.

While the data is provided by the software, it is interpreted and studied by the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS) team that comprises Indian and South African scientists. The principal investigator in this project is Dr. Neeraj Gupta from the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA).

"All science telescopes make use of data processing software and at some point in time, they require human intervention. With ARTIP, we have ensured that manual intervention is not required. The data can directly be studied by the science teams and they can draw observations from it," she added.

The MeerKAT telescope is only a precursor to the world's largest array of radio telescopes - Square Kilometre Array (SKA). MeerKAT is eventually meant to be subsumed into the SKA. The SKA can scan the skies for radio signals, using its unprecedented capabilities. It is capable of generating massive amounts of data, almost comparable to how much the internet does in a day. Thoughtworks' E4R(Engineering for Research) division hopes to scale up ARTIP to aid the teams working with SKA data as well, Chhaya said.&nbsp;

Software by Indian techies helps hear from distant galaxies, make discoveries

Many of us have observed our canine companions during sleep, witnessing their noses twitch, legs move as though in a sprint, and even hearing their muted barks. After a day filled with frolics on the beach, romps through the countryside, or exploring the backyard, a lot could be&nbsp;running on their&nbsp;minds as they slumber. Now, a study by Harvard psychologists suggests that your dog's dreams may include you - their human.&nbsp;

<h2>The human-dog bond</h2>

Dr&nbsp;Deirdre Barrett, a clinical and evolutionary psychologist at Harvard Medical School, embarked on extensive research into dogs' sleep behaviour, leading her to the conclusion that they likely dream in a manner similar to humans.

Just like us, dogs dream about their daily experiences, which can often appear creative and somewhat surreal compared to reality, Barret told the&nbsp;People magazine.&nbsp;

It's theorised that dogs don't dream in a logical fashion; rather, they conjure visual experiences related to what captivates them and what they have emotional connections to.

The alignment of sleep patterns between humans and dogs provides further evidence of their dream-filled slumbers. Both species traverse distinct sleep stages, including deep sleep and Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. It is during the REM sleep phases that dreams unfold for dogs, just as they do for their human counterparts.

In both human and canine brains, there exists a mechanism that typically inhibits physical movement during sleep to prevent individuals from acting out their dreams. However, there are occasions when this mechanism falters, leading to dream-related movements.

For dogs, if this brain mechanism weakens, you might have the delightful opportunity to witness their dream sequences. You may see them enthusiastically chasing that stick you threw for them the previous day or sprinting through fields. Most importantly, while they sleep, they dream of you—your visage and your scent—providing them with immense comfort.

Climate Change is dangerous, and this unfortunately is old news. Many of us care and try to incorporate so-called "green" or sustainable practices into our lives. Many continue to rebuff the climate change.&nbsp;

Whether you're part of the former group or the latter, this piece of information will interest and maybe even sadden you. Recent research has found that climate change will affect beer, making it expensive and potentially change the taste. Here's all you need to know.

<h2>Losing the taste</h2>

You may be wondering how can climate change affect the taste of beer.

Beer is the third-most popular drink after water and tea. The globally popular alcoholic drink gets its distinctive taste and smell from hops, a flower, whose quantity and quantity will be affected by climate change, reports The Guardian.

A study published in the journal Nature Communications predicts that until and unless farmers adapt to hotter and drier weather, hop yields in Europe's growing regions will fall by around 4 to 18 per cent by 2050. It also forecasts that the alpha acids in hops — responsible for the taste&nbsp; — will fall by 20-31 per cent.

Study co-author Miroslav Trnka, a scientist at the Global Change Research Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, says: "Beer drinkers will definitely see the climate change, either in the price tag or the quality."

"That seems to be inevitable from our data," says Trnka, adding that "across the pubs of Europe, the most frequent debate except weather and politics is about the … beer".

<h2>Climate Change is not gender-neutral</h2>

As per the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), climate change, though harmful for everyone, affects people disproportionately.

Its report — the first to examine climate change and how it refers to reproductive health, found that only a third of the nations recognise the disproportionate impact of the climate crisis on women and girls.

Research by UNFPA and Queen Mary University of London released on Tuesday found that of the 119 countries with published national plans on tackling the climate crisis, only 38 include access to contraception, and maternal and newborn health services and just 15 make any reference to violence against women.

"Climate is setting us back on the fight to gender equality. Our point would be to make sure that climate policy recognises the differential impact on women and takes it into account in the design of policy," said study co-author, UNFPA adviser on population and development Angela Baschieri.

Your favourite beer might not taste the same in the coming years. Thanks to climate change

New research suggests that our climate some nearly 13,000 years ago might have been severely changed due to a cosmic intervention. A global team of researchers has&nbsp;presented its case in four peer-reviewed papers to study the substantially disputed Younger Dryas (YD) impact hypothesis.&nbsp;

According to the studies, it was a comet that led to the plantation of the first seeds of agriculture in Syria, a necessary adaptation to improve the chances of survival.&nbsp;

It was also after the fragments of this comet slammed into Earth’s atmosphere that the climate drastically changed since the plants and animals they relied on disappeared.&nbsp;

<h2>What is YD?</h2>

Younger Dryas was a cooling period between roughly 12,900 and 11,600 years ago which disrupted the Earth’s warming trend in the Northern Hemisphere. This period was marked by a rather sudden, severe, and lengthy interruption to the Earth’s climate.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the team find?</h2>

The team’s research is based on their analysis of the sediment layers from the Neolithic site Abu Hureyra, which was excavated in the 1970s before being submerged under Lake Assad. Notably, Abu Hureyra is said to be the earliest evidence of a shift from hunter-gathering to farming phase.&nbsp;

“We present substantial new quantitative evidence and interpretations supporting the hypothesis that comet fragments triggered near-global shifts in climate ~12,800 years ago, and one airburst destroyed the Abu Hureyra village,” the researchers wrote.&nbsp;

According to the researchers, sediment layers revealed a number of factors which included types of plants before and after the YD climate change. The data also included “changes in building architecture, diet, the early stages of persistent cultivation of domestic-type grains and legumes,” said the authors.&nbsp;

The also shows the “initial penning of livestock, marking the beginning of sustained agriculture and animal domestication.” The team also found shock-fractured quartz grains that were not only consistent with the impact but also evidence of a massive firestorm.

“Shocked quartz is well known and is probably the most robust proxy for a cosmic impact,” Earth scientist James Kennett of the University of California Santa Barbara said in a statement.

“For the first time, we propose that shock metamorphism in quartz grains exposed to an atomic detonation is essentially the same as during a low-altitude, lower-pressure cosmic airburst,” he added.&nbsp;

The second study identified the shock-fractured quartz at the site’s sediment layer from the beginning of the YD period. Some quartz grains in this layer were similar to those found in nuclear explosions and Meteor Crater.&nbsp;

Most of these shock-fractured quartz had been exposed to temperatures of at least 1713 degrees Celsius or higher, said the study.&nbsp;

The third study found small diamonds, special crystals, and small balls made of silica and iron in the sediment layer from the beginning of the YD period some of which could have only been formed under higher temperature or pressure conditions that no human had the ability to produce at the time.&nbsp;

The researchers in the final study present evidence that historically there is a direct connection between cosmic impacts, environmental shifts and changes in societies. Therefore, the team proposes that this major shift came due to the disintegration of a 100-kilometre-wide comet.&nbsp;

Nearly 13,000 years ago a comet impact may have sparked major change in climate

How will the world end? A flood that drowns everyone? A fiery meteor that herds us to the same end that met the mighty dinosaurs? Or an air-born&nbsp;virus that destroys us from the inside?

Turns out, our end may lie in a solar storm. Scientists have found proof of a gargantuan storm that struck our Earth some 14,300 years ago, and which they say if happens today "could be catastrophic for society."

<h2>Largest-ever solar storm</h2>

Remains of a tree along the Drouzet River in the French Alps revealed fascinating evidence.

Annual growth rings of the stump of the Scots pine tree revealed radiocarbons, an isotope released by the sun during solar storms.

This could be the largest solar storm ever, even trumping the Carrington Event, which in 1859 caused an unprecedented geomagnetic storm around the globe and created "a nighttime aurora so bright that birds sang as if the sun was rising".

In fact, as per estimates, this solar storm from more than 14,000 years ago was probably 10 times the late 1800s storm that caused telegraph systems to go haywire.

<h2>What if it happened today?</h2>

As per scientists, if such a solar storm struck Earth today, the effects would be "catastrophic."

One thing you should know about such storms is that they tend to knock out electronics, and as per Edouard Bard, a professor of climate and ocean evolution at the Collège de France and the research centre CEREGE, "if similar solar storms happened today, they could be catastrophic for society, as we are so reliant upon technology."

"They could do enormous damage to our electricity grids, potentially causing nationwide blackouts lasting months, permanently putting satellites out of action with the huge bursts of energetic particles destroying their solar panels and stopping us communicating with them, and pose severe radiation risks to astronauts and aviation. In the worst-case scenario, the impact could cost us billions, or even trillions, of dollars in lost GDP," he said.

"This is the big question: will our communications, electricity grids and satellites mostly be able to withstand their impacts and just suffer temporary effects before quickly coming back online? Or will they catastrophically fail?" added Heaton.

China: Yin Hejun named Communist Party chief of science ministry

On Saturday (October 14), almost one billion people in America will witness one of the most interesting celestial events: An eclipse of the Sun. People in North and South America will be able to watch the new moon orbit&nbsp;between the Sun and Earth.&nbsp;

This is an annular eclipse, one in which a sunlight ring is viewed around the moon's image at the midpoint of the spectacle. In this eclipse, the Sun is never completely hidden, but the moon&nbsp;will be 4.5 days past apogee, the farthest from the Earth.&nbsp;The new moon on eclipse day will be 246,707 miles (397,037 km) away.

The eclipse will only be partially visible in the United States. It will gain over the North Pacific Ocean and will slide on a southeast trajectory arriving at the coast of Oregon at 9:15 am Pacific Daylight Time. This means that for the next 46 minutes, the annular phase will be visible from parts of nine states running from Oregon to Texas.&nbsp;

The duration of the annularity along the centre of the eclipse centre will increase from 4 minutes 34 seconds on the Pacific coast of Oregon to 5 minutes 2 seconds on the Texas Gulf Coast.&nbsp;

Cities that will witness this "ring of fire" effect include Eugene, Winnemucca, NV, Albuquerque, San Antonio and Corpus Christi. After it leaves Texas, the eclipse path will pass across Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, then slide through Central America, then into south-central Colombia, through northern Brazil, before finally coming to an end over the open ocean water of the South Atlantic.&nbsp;

However, the sky will not get darker as in a deep partial eclipse. Yet, it promises to be a spectacular sight and enthusiasts will be reaching places from where they can best view the eclipse.

Why is this happening?

This celestial event will occur because the moon's motion is strongly perturbed by the attraction of the sun and in a lesser way by that of the planets and by the Earth.&nbsp;

Due to the tidal effects, the moon is slowly moving farther from the Earth, spiralling outward and ascending to a more distant orbit. As the moon moves progressively farther away, its apparent size diminishes until finally, it reaches a point where it will be too far for its dark umbral shadow cone to reach the Earth, thus precluding the occurrence of total solar eclipses.&nbsp;

Skygazers to witness the mesmerising 'ring of fire' on October 14 | Details

Scientists from Mahidol University in Thailand are conducting groundbreaking research into the potential of watermeal, the world's smallest flowering plant, as a source of nutrition and oxygen for astronauts.

Their study, conducted at the European Space Agency's (ESA) ESTEC technical centre in the Netherlands, involves subjecting watermeal to hypergravity conditions using ESA's Large Diameter Centrifuge (LDC).

The LDC, with its impressive 8-meter diameter and four-arm design, allows scientists to replicate gravity levels up to 20 times that of Earth for extended periods. This exceptional facility is made accessible through the HyperGES programme, a collaboration between ESA and the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).

<h2>Watermeal: A unique study subject</h2>

Watermeal, smaller even than duckweed, is an intriguing focus of this research. This rootless, stemless plant typically floats on the surface of water bodies in regions like Thailand and other parts of Asia. Its simplicity and rapid growth rate make it an ideal candidate for studying the effects of altered gravity on plant development.

Tatpong Tulyananda, leading the Mahidol University team, explains their interest in watermeal: "Because watermeal doesn’t have any roots, stems or leaves, it is basically just a sphere floating on a body of water. Watermeal offers more than just scientific curiosity. It's a prolific producer of oxygen through photosynthesis and a rich source of protein. In Thailand, it has been part of the local diet for generations, appearing in dishes ranging from soups to salads.

To investigate how hypergravity impacts watermeal, the researchers placed samples in specially designed boxes equipped with LED lighting to replicate natural sunlight.

These boxes were subjected to hypergravity conditions, simulating 20 times Earth's gravity, within the LDC. Following two weeks of experimentation, the scientists will closely examine the watermeal plants and conduct detailed chemical analyses on solid pellet extracts.

Scientists from Mahidol University in Thailand are conducting groundbreaking research into the potential of watermeal, the world's smallest flowering plant, as a source of nutrition and oxygen for astronauts.

Watermeal: A unique study subject Watermeal, smaller even than duckweed, is an intriguing focus of this research. That means we can focus directly on the effects that gravity shifts will have on its growth and development." Watermeal offers more than just scientific curiosity. Asian hornets, also known as yellow-legged hornets, have invaded large parts of mainland Europe and parts of east Asia. But now, a study has shown that they are possibly facing resistance from native species like bumblebees.

New research shows bumblebees have a remarkably successful method for fighting off Asian hornets. The study was published in the journal Communications Biology and led by a British university.

It comes at a time when a record level of Asian hornets have been observed in the UK and continental Europe this year, raising the risk for bees and prompting substantial control efforts.&nbsp;

<h2>How does this fight take place?</h2>

Scientists from the University of Exeter observed that when attacked, buff-tailed bumblebees drop to the ground and take the hornets down with them. This causes the hornet to either lose its grip or the bee raises its sting and tussles until the hornet gives up.

Researchers from the British university witnessed over 120 such attacks with bumblebees winning each time. However, this does not seem to be reflected in the numbers since the researchers also found that bumble bee colonies had reduced growth rates in areas with high numbers of Asian hornets.&nbsp;

This suggests that the hornets – despite their failed attempts to attack and enter the colonies – have a negative impact on the pollinators.&nbsp;

“Asian hornets prey on a wide range of insects, including honey bees, but little is known about their impact on other pollinators,” said Thomas O’Shea-Wheller, from Exeter’s Environment and Sustainability Institute, in a statement.&nbsp;

<h2>Does this help the bumblebees?</h2>

During the so-called fight between honey bees or bumble bees it was observed that the hornets do something called “hawking” which is essentially hovering outside the colony and attacking returning foragers as they fly past, O’Shea-Wheller explained.&nbsp;

Researchers also found that while hornets deploy the same method for both pollinators, with bumblebees, they are “entirely unsuccessful.” The study also noted that while honey bees are often unable to escape the clutches of Asian hornets, bumblebees’ defensive response appears to be more successful.&nbsp;

Speaking about the hornets’ low success rate, the researcher also said that hornets attack bumblebees of “all sizes” even some larger than them. He added, “They are very persistent and generalist predators, so these attacks may still be worthwhile despite the high failure rate, as long as they sometimes get a kill.”

For this study, researchers placed reared bumblebee colonies in 12 locations across the Spanish province of Pontevedra with varying local Asian hornet densities. These colonies were then weighed – as a way to measure colony growth – every two days.&nbsp;

Researchers noted that colonies in areas which had higher Asian hornet densities grew more slowly. “We can’t say for certain why this is. It’s possible that some external factor is good for Asian hornets, allowing them to thrive, but bad for bumblebees,” said O’Shea-Wheller.

Bumblebees have a ‘remarkably successful’ way of fighting off invasive Asian hornets: Study

Some 122 million years ago, Spain was home to a massive never-seen-before dinosaur, new fossils show. The newly described species has been named Garumbatitan morellensis, and it was found during excavations at the Sant Antoni de la Vespa fossil site near the city of Morella.

Researchers have described their findings in a new study published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society on September 28.

<h2>A titan of yesterday</h2>

The sauropod fossil — dinosaurs with long necks, long tails, small heads, and four thick, pillar-like legs &nbsp;— was found during an excavation more than a decade ago, between 2005 and 2008.&nbsp;

Garumbatitan morellensis was a Titanosaur species, which is a subgroup of sauropods, and it was the only lineage to survive until the dinosaur-killing asteroid struck around 66 million years ago. &nbsp;

During the excavation, researchers uncovered the remains of not just one, but three individuals. Remains include massive vertebrae, lengthy leg bones and two near-complete sets of foot bones, which reportedly is an extremely rare find for sauropods.&nbsp;

These massive fossils, as per estimates, date back to the Lower Cretaceous period (some 145 to 66 million years ago).

<h2>Titanosaurs</h2>

Garumbatitan morellensis, as per scientists, was a pretty average-sized Titanosaur, a subgroup used to classify the most massive sauropods.

While Titanosaurs were the heaviest sauropods, as per Live Science, they were not the longest. That title is reserved for Supersaurus, an as-of-yet unspecified sauropod species that stretched to 128 feet or 39 metres long.

Garumbatitan morellensis's unusual bone shape, as per Live Science, suggests that the massive dinosaur was quite primitive. The discovery, as per the report, could help scientists better understand the evolution of these gigantic, long-necked dinosaurs.&nbsp;

These titans belonged to the sub-group Somphospondyli, whose fossils have been found on every modern-day continent. However, it is unclear where the Somphospondyli may have originated. The long-necked dinosaur discovery in Spain hints at the possibility that Europe may be where they first roamed.

The science behind Phyto Therapeutic Oil: How it works to relieve leg pain

Researchers in the US state of Missouri found high concentrations of microplastics in a cave system that has been closed off to visitors for the past three decades.&nbsp;

The recent study is an addition to worrisome research which shows the extent of microplastic contamination which has been found in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/microplastics-found-in-cloud-for-first-time-researchers-sound-warning-bell-640473">clouds</a>, rain and even in several parts of the human body.&nbsp;

The findings related to the significant microplastic levels in the cliff cave in the city of St Louis were detailed in two new research papers, published in Science of the Total Environment and Water Research.&nbsp;

This time around, microplastics were found in the water and sediment in the cave system in Missouri, according to the scientists studying student-collected samples.&nbsp;

<h2>Microplastics found in ‘human-free’ cave</h2>

Microplastics have been defined as tiny chunks of less than five millimetres long pieces of plastic and microfibres from clothes that get caught in the Earth’s atmosphere. However, they are also formed after the breakdown of other plastic products like plastic bags due to ocean currents.&nbsp;

ALSO READ |<a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/credit-card-equivalent-study-finds-how-much-plastic-humans-inhale-every-week-but-where-does-it-go-606194">&nbsp;‘Credit card-equivalent’: Study finds how much plastic humans inhale every week. But where does it go?</a>

What makes this study exceptional is that no one had been able to enter the cave system since 1993 allowing the researchers to eliminate human presence as a possible cause of microplastic contamination. Additionally, most of the research on microplastics in this context has been focused on surface water settings but not the subsurface level.&nbsp;

“A lot of research has been focused on surface water settings…one of the most understudied areas in this field relates to what’s happening to the subsurface in terms of microplastic contamination,” said Dr Elizabeth Hasenmueller of St Louis University whose team published findings, adding that this is because of the highly visible problem of large plastic pollution in the ocean. &nbsp;

Hasenmueller and her team discovered that the flooding not only contributed to higher levels of microplastics but also brought a higher diversity of microplastics to the cave water.&nbsp;

Furthermore, when it receded, more microplastic was deposited near the cave’s mouth than in locations deeper in the cave. The study also found that microplastics were 100 times more concentrated in sediment than in the water of the cave.&nbsp;

According to Hasenmueller, as much as 99 per cent of the microplastic debris present in the cave was found stored in the sediment and “only a very small fraction” was in the water.

“As the waters recede, that material remains in the cave sediment, potentially for decades or longer,” said the researcher.&nbsp;

<h2>Importance of the study</h2>

Researchers also warned that these microplastics could enter the groundwater, a common drinking water resource, or caves which are home to fragile ecosystems. So far, there is very little known about the impact of microplastics on <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/explained-study-finds-its-raining-microplastics-should-we-be-concerned-about-our-health-543789">human health</a>.&nbsp;

The cliff caves located near residential areas could have contributed to the high concentration of microplastic, according to Hasenmueller. She went on to warn that it could disrupt the delicate habitat of bats, amphibians, and other animals in the cave.&nbsp;

“On a larger scale, we, as a society, could move away from synthetic clothing, because a lot of the debris that we found in this cave was synthetic fibers from textiles,” said Hasenmueller.&nbsp;

According to Hasenmueller, as much as 99 per cent of the microplastic debris present in the cave was found stored in the sediment and “only a very small fraction” was in the water. “As the waters recede, that material remains in the cave sediment, potentially for decades or longer,” said the researcher. ALSO READ | In a worrisome first, scientists detect microplastics in human hearts: Study Importance of the study Researchers also warned that these microplastics could enter the groundwater, a common drinking water resource, or caves which are home to fragile ecosystems. So far, there is very little known about the impact of microplastics on human health. The cliff caves located near residential areas could have contributed to the high concentration of microplastic, according to Hasenmueller. She went on to warn that it could disrupt the delicate habitat of bats, amphibians, and other animals in the cave. “On a larger scale, we, as a society, could move away from synthetic clothing, because a lot of the debris that we found in this cave was synthetic fibers from textiles,” said Hasenmueller. Scientists find microplastics in cave closed to humans for 30 years: Study

Do you want to lose weight without working out? Science may have a solution for you. A new drug claims to&nbsp;have shown amazing results on mice, imbuing them with the benefits of exercise without the need for any actual physical activity.

<h2>No pain, no gain is a lie, proves drug</h2>

As per a University of Florida, the newly developed compound called SLU-PP-332 helped obese mice lose weight.&nbsp;

It apparently did this by speeding up their metabolism by convincing their bodies to go into marathon training mode. The compound also helps beef up their energy and endurance.

Thomas Burris, a University of Florida pharmacy professor who led the research, said: "This compound is basically telling skeletal muscle to make the same changes you see during endurance training."

The paper drugs like Ozempic, Moujnaro, and Wegovy, which it calls game-changers in obesity treatment. It says these products spurred on "a surge of interest, research, and funding for drugs that could treat these metabolic diseases through different biological pathways."&nbsp;

Burris suggests SLU-PP-332 will "keep people healthier as they age."

The research findings have been published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.

<h2>How does the drug do this?</h2>

The drug stimulates the EFF protein and activates the body's "energy-gobbling" tissues, such as the brain, the heart, and other muscles. EFF is typically released when an individual exercises.&nbsp;

Burris explains, "When you treat mice with the drug...you can see that their whole body metabolism turns to using fatty acids, which is very similar to what people use when they are fasting or exercising."

The Earth is heating up, and soon it may reach temperatures&nbsp;and humidity that after a few hours of exposure could prove fatal for humans, even young ones. Based on recent research, scientists have identified the maximum mix of heat and humidity a human body can take.&nbsp;

<h2>Wet bulb temperature</h2>

Previously scientists thought that a young, healthy person will die after enduring around six hours of temperatures close to 35 degree&nbsp;Celsius (95 degree Fahrenheit), and 100 per cent humidity. However, new research argues that the actual threshold could be much lower.

Researchers at United States' Pennsylvania State University decided to put the theorised "wet bulb temperature" to the test — the point at which sweat no longer evaporates off the skin, leading to heatstroke and eventually death. This was earlier measured using wet cloth and thermometers.

Measuring the core temperatures of healthy, young people inside a heat chamber, researchers found that the study participants reached their "critical environmental limit" at a wet bulb temperature of 30.6 degree&nbsp;Celsius, much lower than previously theorised.

Climate change and temperature rise

The previously thought heat, humidity-bearing capacity of humans (35 degrees Celsius) as per an AFP report has only been breached a few times, particularly in South Asia and the Persian Gulf.&nbsp;

Climate change, however, is leading to an increase in dangerous wet bulb events, with the frequency of such events doubling over the past 40 years, said Colin Raymond of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory while talking to AFP.

Raymond's research indicates that if the world warms 2.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, these wet bulb events will get even more frequent.

A recent report by&nbsp;European Union's climate change service Copernicus shows that oceans&nbsp;have hit their hottest-ever recorded temperature.&nbsp;Beating a 2016 record, the daily global sea surface temperatures have reached 20.96C, which is far above the average for this time of the year, reports BBC. In 2016, a record was set when the naturally occurring El Niño was in full swing.

Experts warn that extreme heat events, even below the 35-degree limit, can be deadly. They say that different people have different thresholds based on factors such as age, health, and even socioeconomic conditions.&nbsp;They point out that people least able to protect themselves from extreme heat will suffer the most.&nbsp;

Survival and climate change: Scientists identify 'deadly' heat and humidity combo

Earthworms, as per new research, are the unsung heroes of food production, with contributions that match Russia, one of the top grain producers globally.

As per the new study evaluating the enormous role earthworms play in food production, these soil-dwelling invertebrate contribute to the harvest of around 140 million tonnes every year.

<h2>Fourth-largest producer worldwide</h2>

As per the Guardian, in 2022, Russia produced some 150 million tonnes. This year, the nation is expected to produce around 120 million tonnes.&nbsp;

Earthworms's contribution to the production of 140 million tonnes would've made them "the fourth-largest global producer if they were a country", reports the Guardian.

As per the study published in Nature Communications, the worm that is also known as 'night crawler' contributes to 6.5 per cent of all grain harvests globally. This includes crops like rice, maize, wheat and barley.

Furthermore, they also contribute to about 2.3 per cent or around 16 million metric tonnes of legume production. This includes crops like soybean, dry beans, peas, garbanzos, lentils, alfalfa, clover.

Their contribution is highest in the global south, where earthworms contribute to 10 per cent of production in Sub-Saharan Africa, and eight per cent in Latin America and Caribbean.

<h2>How do earthworms do this?</h2>

Scientists have long been aware of earthworms and their contribution to enhancing plant growth. Charles Darwin, a naturalist, wrote about this way back in 1881. However, this research is the first time that a number has been put to exactly how much they help.

The worms feed on organic materials in the soil, eating both fresh and decaying materials from the plant roots. They then mix their waste into the soil as they move, creating a moist, microbe-rich environment. Furthermore, the tunnels they create bring in oxygen, help drain excess water and create&nbsp;space for plant roots.

As amazing as the results are, the researchers caution that they "do not advocate for the widespread inoculation of earthworms to regions where they are not currently present, as this can have highly undesirable ecological consequences for adjacent natural areas." Instead, they suggest that continued research and promotion of agroecological management practices that and contribute to "long-term sustainability and resilience of agriculture".

Earthworms emerge as the unsung heroes of global grain production, rivalling Russia's contribution

In the lush landscapes of Thailand's Phang-Nga province, a captivating discovery has surprised the scientific community – a mesmerising electric blue tarantula species.

The discovery was unveiled by researchers on an expedition&nbsp;into the Thailand's tarantula diversity and distribution. The extraordinary discovery was documented in the research journal ZooKeys on September 18.

<h2>Do you feel the 'spark'?</h2>

Narin Chomphuphuang, a researcher at Khon Kaen University’s Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, described the find as "a new species of tarantula that exhibits a mesmerising blue-violet hue, reminiscent of electric blue sparks."&nbsp;

The team, as per a CNN report, included not just researchers but also Thai wildlife YouTuber JoCho Sippawat, who is one of the authors of the paper published in ZooKeys.

<h2>Why is the blue colour important?</h2>

Blue is one of the rarest colours found in nature. This is due to the fact that achieving a blue colour in nature is challenging.&nbsp;

"Blue is one of the rarest colours to appear in nature, which makes blue colouration in animals particularly fascinating," said Chomphuphuang.

"To appear blue, an object needs to absorb very small amounts of energy while reflecting high-energy blue light," he explained.

'Chilobrachys natanicharum,' derives its colours not from the presence of any blue pigmentation, but rather "the unique structure of their hair, which incorporates nanostructures that manipulate light to create this striking blue appearance."

As per the research paper, the tarantula's distinct colouring arises from two types of hairs: metallic-blue and violet.&nbsp;

These hairs are present on various parts of the spider's body, including its legs, chelicera (pincer-like mouth appendages), and carapace (upper shell).&nbsp;

Interestingly, the colouring varies with sex and age, with females and young males displaying more violet coloured hairs than metallic blue in certain areas of their bodies, notes the study.

<h2>How did the tarantula get its name?</h2>

To raise awareness and support for the indigenous Lahu people of northern Thailand, the team actually auction off the privilege of naming the newfound species.&nbsp;

'Chilobrachys natanicharum' the moniker, draws inspiration from the names of two individuals who won the auction.
&nbsp;
The new species of tarantula is both terrestrial or arboreal - lives within tree hollows.

Researchers only managed to capture two specimens of the elusive tarantula.&nbsp;

"During our expedition, we walked in the evening and at night during low tide, managing to collect only two of them," said Chomphuphuang, as quoted by CNN.

However, the striking blue spider faces a grim reality as one of the world's rarest tarantulas due to the decline of mangrove forests, largely due to deforestation.

Scientists discover rare, stunning electric blue-coloured Tarantula species in Thailand's lush jungles

Movies like ET, shows like the X files, and countless books are a testament to humanity's long standing fascination with life out there. From the whistleblower in the US, to the alien corpses in Mexico. Recently aliens, UFOs or UAPs as they are now called have regularly made the headlines. The sudden influx of so many things extraterrestrial makes one wonder if amid turbulent times all this is merely a distraction tactic. To gain insights into this, WION's Moohita Garg connected with Harvard professor, Dr Avi Loeb. Here's what the celebrated international expert said.

Are governments using aliens to distract the public?

In southeastern America, a parasitic worm that is typically found in rats is spreading. The worm can, in severe cases, cause coma or even death in humans, and can also infect pets.

Here's all you need to know:

<h2>Rat-borne danger</h2>

In a study published recently in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, researchers from Texas A&amp;M, Zoo Atlanta and Mississippi State University have warned that the microscopic rat lungworm, scientifically known as Angiostrongylus Cantonensis, now threatens a wide area of southeast US.

As per US News, the parasite can trigger dangerous brain encephalitis in both humans and their pets.

An analysis of tissue samples from 33 wild brown rats found dead on the grounds of a zoological facility in Atlanta from between 2019 and 2022, found that more than a fourth of the rodents appeared to have worm-like larvae in their tissues.

Four of these cases were confirmed as rat lungworm infections, the other three could to be confirmed but were likely Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

<h2>Infecting humans</h2>

Speaking to Newsweek, Nicole Gottdenker, a Professor of Pathology at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, warned that the worm can infect humans.

"When the infective stage of the worm is accidentally ingested by a human, it can go to the brain or spinal cord and cause tremendous inflammation, leading to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, headaches, sometimes arm and leg tingling," said Gottdenker.

<img alt="Angiostrongylus cantonensis life cycle (Image:CDC:" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="e774a5da-2b36-4145-a82e-6821d6a2c1a0" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/New%20wion%20-%202023-09-26T191033.685.jpg" />

Angiostrongylus cantonensis life cycle (Image:CDC)

While the number of confirmed cases remains low, the study demonstrates that this worm is a potential threat to human health.

<h2>Angiostrongylus Cantonensis or the rat lungworm</h2>

The parasitic worm is typically found in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, including Hawaii.

However, recently it has been identified in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and most recently in Georgia.

It is spread through rat faeces and can infect humans and other animals through produce or other food items.

Inside the human body, the parasitic worm migrates to the brain, eyes or lungs, and in severe cases can lead to coma and death. Furthermore, in pets, birds and other wild animals, it can cause fatal infections.

However, basic precautions like washing vegetables, fruits and other produce, and washing your hands can help protect you and your family from the dangerous worm.

"People can avoid infection by washing vegetables thoroughly, not eating raw or undercooked snails or slugs, crabs, freshwater shrimp, or frog legs—and wear gloves if handling snails or slugs. And, as always 'wash your veggies' and 'wash your hands!'," said Nicole Gottdenker.

(With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Dangerous rat-borne disease threatens southeastern US, warn scientists

Those interested in astronomy are familiar with the fascinating concept of Dyson Sphere. The concept, described by Physicist Freeman Dyson in his research paper in 1960 put forth a fascinating thought experiment that advanced alien civilisations would build an enclosure (Dyson Sphere) around their host star in order to fulfil their energy needs. Building of such a megastructure would be necessary for that civilisation since its energy needs would surpass what their host planet is able to provide. Dyson had proposed that while searching for alien life in the Universe, we should keep an eye out for such megastructures as they can be indicative of the alien civilisation that built them.

But now a team of researchers from India has proposed an alternative approach to finding alien civilisations in a study.

As reported by ScienceAlert, the research was led by Raghav Narsimha, a physics graduate student from Christ University in Bengaluru. Narsimha was joined by Chandra Sivaram, professor at Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIAP) and Margarita Safonova, a scientist from IIAP.

The megastructures, like Dyson Sphere, if they are built are likely to have some effect on the star when it is looked upon from distance. For example, the star may inexplicably dim when looked from Earth. Such possible endeavors by alien civilisations are also likely to leave 'technosignatures' or 'tell-tale' signed.

The team from India has suggested that instead of looking for tell-tale signs of as difficult an endeavour as Dyson Sphere, we should look for technosignatures of some other kind.

The team proposes that pulling other planets into the habitable zone of the star to use the resources or to use them as planetary real estate would be less cumbersome than building full-fledged megastructures that encapsulate the entire star.

For this, says the team in its study, the alien civilisation would need immensely powerful lasers. We are talking about moving planets here. And the 'spill-over' energy signature from these lasers would be the technosignature we would need to look for while hunting aliens, says the team.

Not Dyson Sphere, search other technosignatures to find aliens: Study

Scientists at the Carnegie Institution for Science, Washington, DC, have achieved a major breakthrough in the hunt for alien life by creating a simple test. This test, using artificial intelligence (AI), can determine with 90 per cent&nbsp;accuracy whether a sample comes from a living organism or not. The exciting part is that it might work on samples we already have, like those from Mars.

This breakthrough uses AI to spot tiny differences in how molecules are arranged in samples. Unlike previous methods, it doesn't need to look for specific molecules linked to life. It's more versatile, reported The Independent.

Scientists trained the AI with data from 134 known samples, telling it whether each one was from life or not. Then they gave it new samples to identify. It got it right 90 per cent&nbsp;of the time.

<h2>From 'living'&nbsp;to 'fossils'</h2>

What's remarkable is that this AI can even tell if something is freshly alive or a fossil. It can distinguish between a living leaf and something that's been dead for a long time.

Even when samples are old and have changed a lot, this method still works. It's a big deal because organic molecules, which can show if there is life, often break down over time.

This isn't just for space. It could help us solve mysteries on Earth, like whether ancient rocks contain the oldest fossilised life or not. Researchers are using it to look at rocks from different places, like Australia and Canada.

Hunt for alien life just got easier, thanks to this simple AI test

It is the age of equality. Women work, so do men;&nbsp;Women take care of the house, so do men... or do they?

A recent British Social Attitudes (BSA) survey has revealed that while the attitude surrounding stereotypical gender roles like housework have changed, the reality, to a large extent, hasn't.

<h2>Practice what you preach</h2>

The annual survey of public view in Britain as per BBC news revealed that over three-quarters of the 6,638 respondents say that domestic labour should be split.

Despite that, two-thirds accepted that women continue to do more than their fair share of washing and ironing around the house. A large majority also acknowledged that the women still do most of the cooking and cleaning.

This is in spite of a radical shift in ideas on gender roles.

In the mid-1980s, almost half the survey respondents, or 48 per cent, had agreed with the statement "a man's job is to earn money and a woman's to look after the home."

This year, only nine per cent said they agree to this. Yet, 63 per cent of the female respondents said that they did more than their fair share of work around the house.

<h2>The 'second shift'</h2>

Social scientists call this phenomenon the "second shift," where women not only continue to take care of domestic and childcare duties but also join the labour market.

In 1983, around half the survey respondents felt that household income is the responsibility of both the genders. In 2023, about 70 per cent, both men and women think that the two genders should contribute equally.

As per BBC, in 1983, when BSA started conducting the survey, the female employment rate was around 54 per cent for women between the ages 16 and 64 years. This year, this number has risen to 72 per cent, with the participation of mothers at a high.

Comparatively, in 1983, 78 per cent of men between 16 and 64 years had a paid job. Today, this figure has risen by mere one point and stands at 79 per cent.

However, as per the study authors, "there remains a chasm between attitudes and practice, with women continuing to take on more domestic labour relative to men."

This, as per the authors, is reinforced by both public policy and workplace norms, and that the UK is a "long way" from achieving "a complete gender-role revolution in the household."

'Practice what you preach': Even today, women continue to shoulder the burden of housework - Survey

Ancient humans were big on reuse. An analysis by the University of Bern has revealed that Neolithic humans repurposed the bones of the deceased and used them as tools, Science Alert reported.&nbsp;

The analysis was done on bones collected from Cueva de los Marmoles or Marmoles Cave in Southern Spain and was published in PLOS One.&nbsp;

Zita Laffranchi and her team found several signs that showed bones dating back thousands of years with post-mortem use, such as a skull that might have been used as a cup. Furthermore, other bones also showed some signs of being processed and marks that could have been used to remove the marrow or tissues.&nbsp;

The experts mentioned that the bones were from at least 12 different humans, out of which seven were adults.&nbsp;

Several other human remains have been found in the Marmoles Cave, but no detailed anthropological study has yet been performed.&nbsp;

The team undertook new radiocarbon, anthropological and taphonomic analyses&nbsp;of the altered bones to determine more information about the people back then.&nbsp;

The team collected these bones and determined that the cave was used as a "burial site" between the 5th and 2nd millennia BCE. They suggested that the cave was symbolic of the humans living in the area for a long time and was probably used for funerary traditions.

During an interview with PLOS One, the archaeologists said, "After comparing the finds from Marmoles with those from other, similar contexts, we can postulate that these manipulations were related to cultural ideas about death and the position of the dead in the community's ideological landscape."

"That is, the manipulation may have been motivated by a need to keep the remains of community members close, while at the same time 'facilitating' their passage to the spiritual worlds," they added.&nbsp;

It's impossible for archaeologists to determine what exactly happened to the dead bodies and what points they found as it is difficult to interpret the alterations on the bones.&nbsp;

The team also identified a tibial shaft and fibula fragments that were glossy and smooth and covered in small scratches suggesting that these bones could have been seen as tools having been processed, while the bones were fresh.&nbsp;

They are determined to continue studying the cave and other caves to find more evidence about the mysterious practices.&nbsp;

Shocking findings: Neolithic humans altered bones of deceased to make tools

Brucella canis, an incurable disease found in dogs, is spreading to humans in the United Kingdom.&nbsp;

As reported by The Telegraph, the disease that is without a cure and causes infertility in dogs was previously only observed in imported animals.&nbsp;

However, talking to the publication, Dr Christine Middlemiss, the Chief Veterinary Officer at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in Britain, has disclosed that evidence suggests that some dogs in the UK are contracting this infection.

<h2>Zoonotic implications</h2>

As per the report, while it is not yet considered endemic, the instances in which British dogs contracted Brucella canis have increased.&nbsp;

They were linked to specific circumstances, including mating with an imported dog, contact with a pregnant imported dog, or being the offspring of imported canines.&nbsp;

A report from the Human Animal Infection and Risk Surveillance Group, that is set to be published on Monday, will reportedly reveal that the risk to the public is very low, with breeders facing a low risk as well.&nbsp;

However, in spite of the low risk, the situation has drawn increasing attention, particularly as three people have contracted the disease from dogs this year. This has also led to the doubling of human tests conducted by the NHS.

Dr Middlemiss pointed out that the infection seemed to be spreading within kennels through breeding, and that the prevalence remained relatively low.

"There is not a lot – &nbsp;there is very little. But that is new for us."

<h2>Screening</h2>

Government scientists, as per The Telegraph, are reportedly gathering information to assess the feasibility of implementing a screening protocol at the border to prevent infected animals from entering the UK.&nbsp;

While, currently, there are no statutory requirements for import testing, Dr Middlemiss advises "that voluntary testing, pre-import testing, is a really sensible thing to do. If you're bringing dogs in to breed, then it would absolutely make sense to pre-import screen those dogs."

The report reportedly lists euthanasia as the only definitive method to halt onward transmission. However, the decision still lies with the dog owner, as a Brucella canis positive result is not a definite death sentence.
