A day after his acquittal, Saif Ali Khan spends time with Kareena and Taimur at Amrita Arora's house

<p>Chief judicial magistrate Dev Kumar Khatri sentenced the actor to five years in prison for killing two blackbucks, capping a 20-year case that began with a late night safari outside the tourist city of Jodhpur on the sidelines of a film shoot in 1998.</p>

<p>The defence counsel also said Salman was under the custody of forest department for five days and he should be given the benefit of the Probation of Offenders Act.</p>

<p>But the court refused to give Salman the benefit citing the circumstances of the case and gravity of the offence, according to a copy of the judgement.</p>

<p>"...considering the rising number of cases of illegal hunting of wildlife animals, looking at the circumstances of the case and gravity of the offence, giving the benefit of Probation of Offender Act does not appear justified," the judge said.</p>

<p>The defence also said the accused is an actor and his sentencing will affect the livelihood of several families. Opposing this, the prosecution said the actor has committed an offence of serious nature.</p>

<p>The prosecution also mentioned the hit-and-run case against him in Mumbai and other cases while requesting for the maximum punishment.</p>

<p>The verdict triggered a deluge of sympathy from colleagues for the "bad boy" of Hindi filmdom, whose career and personal life have been peppered with controversies, including a manslaughter charge in a hit-and-run case that is still pending.</p>

<p>"I feel bad. He should be given relief. He has done a lot of humanitarian work," actor-politician Jaya Bachchan told reporters outside Parliament in New Delhi, adding that the punishment was harsh.</p>

<p>"But on being spotted and chased, they fled from the spot leaving the dead animals there," he said, adding that there was adequate evidence against them.</p>

<p>Refuting these allegations, Salman Khan's counsel H M Saraswat said there were several loopholes in the prosecution's story and it had failed to prove its case beyond any doubt.</p>

<p>"Prosecution has failed to prove the allegations. It engaged in tampering and fabricating evidence and documents as well as roping in fake witnesses to prove its case," he said.</p>

<p>"It even failed to prove that the blackbucks were killed by gunshots. Hence, such investigation cannot be trusted," Saraswat said.</p>

<p>The case also involved two more accused, Dushyant Singh, who was allegedly accompanying the actors when the poaching took place, and Dinesh Gawre said to be Salman Khan's assistant.</p>

<p>"Gawre never appeared in court and was made to disappear by the main accused. Had he been around, there could have been more information available in the case," Bhati claimed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The much-awaited show, produced by Phantom Films, is based in and shot in India. It is based on the critically-acclaimed best-selling novel of the same name by author Vikram Chandra, read a statement.&nbsp</p>

<p>The series is co-directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap, both acclaimed names in Indian cinema.</p>

<p>In an earlier interview, Motwane had said the show is like a "guinea pig" in the Indian market, and that there is pressure on them to "deliver a great show".</p>

A film that could do so much more than what it is, Kaalakaandi only has few sparks in between its 112 hours of narrative but that is not good enough. Saif, on the other hand, shines- like he always does in a poorly written film.&nbsp;<br />

Based on one night in rain-soaked Mumbai, <em>Kaalakaandi </em>has multiple tracks. A couple is on the verge of separating (Kunal Roy Kapur and Shobhita Dhulipala) as the girl is set to fly off to America for her Ph.D. in a few hours. But first, they must head to their friend&#39;s (Shenaz Treasurywala in a lovely cameo) birthday party. Two local gangsters (Vijay Raaz and Deepak Dobriyal) plan to steal the money- a hefty sum-that rightfully belongs to their boss and plot a devious plan. A senior vice president of a bank (Saif Ali Khan) discovers he only has a few months to live and diagnosed with stomach cancer on the day his younger brother Angad (Akshay Oberoi) to get married. Angad, on the other hand, wants to get in on with his ex-girlfriend before he gets married.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A loosely written screenplay hampers the narrative of the film majorly. Written and directed by <em>Delhi Belly</em> writer Akshat Verma, the film&#39;s first half lacks coherence. One really doesn&#39;t know where the film is heading for the longest time. The two gangsters spend too much time just thinking about how to steal the money. No one from home calls when Angad and his elder brother literally disappear for the good part of the night. While all the stories are taking place on the same night, it is not clearly established if they are taking place at the same time. Also, the writer takes too much time to establish each of the plots and at the interval, one still doesn&#39;t know very clearly where all the stories are heading.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The dialogues in the film are conversational, which is a good thing and the lines are laced with sarcasm and wry humour and Verma makes Mumbai city also a character in the film. Just a very somber character and not as vivacious as Bollywood projects it to be.<br />
<br />
Among the various tracks, the most coherent ones are the one involving Shobita Dhulipala and Kunal Roy Kapur and Saif Ali Khan and a Sheela, a transwoman (Nyaari Singh). In fact, Khan and Singh&#39;s track is perhaps the most enjoyable, genuine and entertaining. The two share some hilarious and some poignant moments together. That&#39;s one track which deserved a full film perhaps. Roy Kapoor and Shobhita Dhulipala also make for a perfect modern-day couple who rediscover their feelings for each other on that odd night.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The rest of the tracks just seemed to be hurriedly put which is unfortunate because the film does boast of an interesting gamut of stars. It&#39;s also a shame that a story which has two bright talents like Dobriyal and Raaz together falls so flat. They are a treat to watch on screen but their track is half-baked.<br />

Overall <em>Kaalakaandi </em>suffers because of incoherence. It shines in few moments and those involve Saif Ali Khan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>2017 saw the success of many middle-of-the-road films. From Hindi Medium to Newton, filmmakers gave audience stories that were&nbsp;thought provoking. The big budget masala potboilers were rejected by the audience as people lauded smaller films.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The new year will see Bollywood churning out some highly anticipated films along with small budget films. The first three months are packed with some very interesting films. From Rani Mukerji&#39;s comeback in <em>Hichki</em> to Akshay Kumar turning a do-gooder in <em>Padman</em> - there is much to look forward to from Bollywood. Apart from the big names, there are also films like <em>Mukkabaaz, Pari, Parmanu</em> which will try to strike a chord with the audience. And of course, the beginning of 2018 will finally witness the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali&#39;s grand <em>Padmavat</em><em>.&nbsp;</em><br />

Co-starring Jimmy Shergill and Ravi Kishan, the film will have Kashyap&#39;s signature style of drama and violence with a powerful storyline. Set to release on January 12th.</p>

The film also features Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor and has been produced by Twinkle Khanna. Padman will be releasing on 26th January.</p>

The first three months are packed with some very interesting films

2017 saw the success of many middle-of-the-road films. From Hindi Medium to Newton, filmmakers gave audience stories that were thought provoking. The big budget masala potboilers were rejected by the audience as people lauded smaller films. The new year will see Bollywood churning out some highly anticipated films along with small budget films. The first three months are packed with some very interesting films. From Rani Mukerji's comeback in Hichki to Akshay Kumar turning a do-gooder in Padman - there is much to look forward to from Bollywood. And of course, the beginning of 2018 will finally witness the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's grand Padmavat. So, here's our list of 11 films to look forward to in the first quarter of 2018 Kaalakaandi: There is something about Saif Ali Khan that always appeals. The Nawab hasn't delivered a hit for a long time but continues to generate curiosity thanks to his unique choices in films. After playing the main protagonist in last year's Chef, Khan will be seen in a dark comedy called Kaalakaandi which has an ensemble cast. Directed by Akshat Verma, the film will release on January 12th. Mukkabaaz: Anurag Kashyap casts the underrated Vineet Singh in the titular role in his new film Mukkabaaz. Set in Uttar Pradesh, the story is of a lower caste boxer who dares to fall in love with an upper caste girl. <p>Saif Ali Khan says there was a time when music acted as a catalyst in making a film successful, but the actor is unsure if the formula still works.<br />

The 47-year-old actor, who had musical hits in films such as<em> Hum Tum</em>, <em>Salaam Namaste</em>&nbsp;and <em>Cocktail</em>, said experimental phase Bollywood is going through has somewhat diluted the significance of song-and-dance routine.<br />

&quot;The films would even get big opening if the songs were a hit. As we have grown or changed, there are less and less songs. I don&#39;t know if it is a good thing (or not).<br />

&quot;In the outskirts of India and rural areas, and in cabs, people listen to Hindi music a lot. I think part of hero&#39;s charm is to sing songs. I don&#39;t know if we have lost that culture (or not),&quot; Saif said.<br />
