The United States envoy to South Africa, on Thursday (May 11), accused the country of supplying weapons to Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine despite the country’s neutral stance. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa calls the allegations “disappointing” in a strongly worded statement.

What did the US envoy say?

The US ambassador to South Africa, Reuben Brigety, in a press conference, said that Washington believes Pretoria had sent weapons and ammunition aboard the Russian freighter that docked at a Cape Town naval base in December. “We are confident that weapons were loaded onto that vessel and I would bet my life on the accuracy of that assertion,” said Brigety.

Washington has noted the docking of a Russian cargo ship Lady R in Simon’s Town between December 6 and December 8, 2022, “which we are confident uploaded weapons, ammunition … as it made its way back to Russia,” said the US envoy to South Africa. He added, “The arming of Russia by South Africa...is fundamentally unacceptable.”

He also spoke about how senior US officials have “profound concerns” about South Africa not respecting its professed stance of non-alignment and neutrality over the Russia-Ukraine conflict, adding that this “does not suggest to us the actions of a non-aligned country,” as quoted by Reuters.

“The arming of the Russians is extremely serious, and we do not consider this issue to be resolved,” said Brigety. Notably, South Africa is one of Russia’s most important allies on the continent, however, it has said that it is impartial to the conflict and has abstained from voting on several UN resolutions in connection with the ongoing war.

How has South Africa responded?

Following these allegations, president Ramaphosa’s office hit back and called it “disappointing” that the US envoy had “adopted a counter-productive public posture”.

“The Ambassador’s remarks undermine the spirit of cooperation and partnership that characterised the recent engagements between US government officials and a South African official delegation,” said Ramaphosa’s spokesman Vincent Magwenya, in a statement.

He added, that while there is no evidence provided to support these allegations by the US, “the government has undertaken to institute an independent enquiry to be led by a retired judge.”

Earlier this year, South Africa also held a joint military exercise with Russia and China which the US and other countries in the West expressed concerns about. Additionally, a sanctioned Russian military cargo plane landed at an air force base in the middle of the night to deliver what defence authorities described as “diplomatic mail.”

South Africa summons US envoy

South Africa's Foreign Ministry also summoned the US ambassador on Friday following the allegations and said he apologised for the remarks and Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor has also discussed the issue with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

After the talks, Brigety took to Twitter and wrote that he was grateful for the opportunity to speak with Pandor and "correct any misimpressions left by my public remarks." The South African Foreign Ministry also issued a statement, later Friday, and said that Brigety "admitted that he crossed a line" and "apologized unreservedly."

South Africa’s vow to probe allegations a ‘welcome step’

During a briefing on Thursday, the US State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel without repeating the allegations told reporters that Washington had serious concerns about the docking of the ship at a South African naval port.

US officials had also raised those concerns directly with multiple South African officials, he added. “The deeply concerning piece of this is the docking of a sanctioned Russian vessel at a South African naval port,” said Patel.

Addressing the promise of an investigation into the US envoy’s allegations, the state department deputy spokesperson said, “It certainly would be a welcome step.”

US envoy accuses South Africa of supplying arms to Russia; Pretoria fumes over allegations

Russia, on Friday (May 12) acknowledged that some of its forces had fallen back from the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut following a new Ukrainian offensive. Russia-installed officials in the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk said that missiles fired by Kyiv hit two disused factories and several houses in the main city. It also injured six children and a Russian parliamentarian, said Leonid Pasechnik, head of the region.

Russia acknowledges retreat in parts of Bakhmut

Moscow had previously insisted it had repelled an attack along the frontlines and denied Ukraine had made any breakthroughs there, adding on Friday that it had repelled Kyiv’s forces along more than 95 kilometres.

Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov later said that Ukraine had launched an assault north of Bakhmut with more than 1,000 troops and up to 40 tanks, which if confirmed, would mark the biggest counteroffensive by Kyiv since November.

According to Konashenkov, Russian troops repelled 26 attacks but fell back to regroup in more favourable positions near the Berkhivka reservoir northwest of Bakhmut.

This comes as the head of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who has been leading Moscow’s attack in Bakhmut, accused the Russian army of “fleeing” from around the eastern Ukraine city.

Addressing the defence ministry spokesman’s remarks, Prigozhin said, “What Konashenkov described, unfortunately, is called ‘a rout’ and not a regrouping,” as quoted by Reuters. He has also claimed that the north and south flanks, guarded by regular Russian troops, were crumbling; which Moscow has since denied.

Prigozhin also accused Russia’s leadership of downplaying the gravity of the situation and that “the flanks are failing, the front is collapsing”. He added, “For this reason, we must stop lying immediately,” said the Wagner chief in a video statement released on social media.

Ukrainian missiles hit parts of Luhansk: Russia-installed officials

According to the Russian-installed official, Pasechnik, head of the region annexed by Russia last year, six children had been injured. Russian officials in the region also said a member of the State Duma (lower house of Russia’s parliament), Viktor Volodatsky, was also injured.

In a post on Telegram, authorities in Luhansk said two Ukrainian-made “grom” tactical missiles have damaged or destroyed administrative buildings at a packaging plant and a factory producing cleaning materials, in the main city which is about 100 kilometres behind the frontlines.

Ukraine claims parts of Bakhmut

Kyiv, on Friday, said that it had retaken swathes of ground near the frontline Ukrainian city of Bakhmut and has witnessed some of the bloodiest battles amid the ongoing conflict. “In three days of counter-offensive activity, the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Bakhmut sector have liberated 17.3 sq. km (6.6 sq. miles) of territory,” said Serhiy Cherevatyi, spokesman for the “east” group of Ukrainian forces, as quoted by Reuters.

In his nightly address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russians were “already internally ready for defeat. They have already lost this war in their minds”. So far, both sides have reported massive gains for Ukraine in the six months, however, Kyiv is yet to confirm if the long-planned counteroffensive has officially begun.

In an interview, earlier this week, Zelensky said Kyiv needed more time for equipment to arrive for the offensive while Prigozhin called that deceptive and has previously claimed that the Ukrainian offensive has already begun.

News agency AFP's Ukraine video coordinator Arman Soldin was killed on Tuesday (May 9) by rocket fire near Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine. According to a report by AFP, the attack happened at around 4:30 pm (1330 GMT) on the outskirts of the town close to Bakhmut.

The team of AFP journalists came under fire from Grad rockets while they were with a group of Ukrainian soldiers. Arman Soldin, 32, was killed when a rocket struck close to where he was lying. The rest of the team was not injured. Soldin was a French national who started working for AFP as an intern in its Rome bureau in 2015 and was later hired in London. He was part of the news agency's first team to be sent to Ukraine after the beginning of the Russian offensive on February 24, 2022, arriving the next day. He had been living in Ukraine since September, leading the team's video coverage and travelling regularly to the frontlines in the east and south. Tributes pour in for Soldin AFP chairman Fabrice Fries said that the news agency was devastated by the loss of Arman Soldin. Fries highlighted that Soldin's death "is a terrible reminder of the risks and dangers faced by journalists every day covering the conflict in Ukraine." Taking to Twitter, French President Emmanuel Macron hailed Soldin's bravery and said, "With bravery, from the first hours of the conflict, he was at the front to establish the facts, to inform us." Ukraine's defence ministry also condoled the journalist's death and said, "He dedicated his life to informing the world about the truth. His legacy, as well as his cause, will live on." The White House also paid tribute to Soldin, with Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre saying the world was "indebted" to the journalists who lost their lives covering the conflict. "Arman's brilliant work encapsulated everything that has made us so proud of AFP's journalism in Ukraine," the agency's Global News Director Phil Chetwynd said. Remembering the 32-year-old, colleagues said Soldin knew in particular how to recount the lives of ordinary people caught up in war-torn Ukraine, desperately trying to survive amid the chaos. According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), with Soldin's death, 11 journalists or fixers and drivers for media teams now have been killed covering the war. Ukraine war: AFP journalist Arman Soldin killed by rocket fire near Chasiv Yar

In light of "provocations" by Ukrainian forces, operations at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant have been suspended, according to a TASS state news agency report. The Moscow-installed governor of the Russia-controlled part of the surrounding region, Yevgeny Balitsky, cited concerns over Ukraine's anticipated counteroffensive to reclaim Russian-held territory, including areas in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Due to this, Russian authorities have reportedly initiated evacuations. Rafael Grossi, head of the United Nations nuclear power watchdog, on Saturday, expressed concerns about the plant's safety, describing the situation as "potentially dangerous."

"The general situation in the area near the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant is becoming increasingly unpredictable and potentially dangerous," said the IAEA chief, adding that he's concerned.

"I’m extremely concerned about the very real nuclear safety and security risks facing the plant."

In response to the escalating situation, Russian officials have begun evacuating people from nearby areas. As per Reuters, approximately 3,000 people, including around 1,000 minors, have been evacuated from villages close to the front line.

Balitsky, the Moscow-installed governor, noted a rise in water levels in the nearby Kakhovka Reservoir, which he believes to be a manipulation. He did not provide further details on the matter.

"We've seen the level (of water in the nearby Kakhovka Reservoir) rise to 17.08 (metres). We realise that this is manipulation. The nuclear reactors have been suspended," he said as per TASS.

According to an AFP report, Ivan Fedorov, the mayor of Melitopol in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, said that the evacuation directive has resulted in "a mad panic and no less mad queues" at the checkpoint leading to Russian-annexed Crimea.

With buses making frequent trips transporting individuals out fuel stations have reportedly been "drained" of gasoline.

Expressing concerns on Telegram, Fedorov stated: "The partial evacuation they announced is going too fast, and there is a possibility that they may be preparing for provocations and (for that reason) focusing on civilians."

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, which happens to be Europe's largest nuclear energy facility, was seized by Russia during the early stages of its invasion of Ukraine that began in February of last year. Despite all six reactors being in "cold shutdown" and not generating electricity, they still contain nuclear material.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), led by Grossi, has previously issued warnings about the plant's safety following temporary power cuts caused by shelling. In March, the IAEA cautioned that the facility was relying on diesel generators to maintain crucial cooling systems due to damage to power lines.

Russia suspends operations at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, evacuates civilians amid threat of 'provocation'

The head of Russia’s mercenary outfit Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, on Monday (May 8) said that it began receiving the ammunition it needed to press its advance to capture the key eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut.

This comes after he had said that he had previously threatened that his fighters will leave the besieged Ukrainian city and accused the Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Russian military’s chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov of withholding ammunition. He went on to claim their reluctance to send more ammunition, saying that because of lack of support, their forces were “facing a senseless death”.

What did Prigozhin say in the latest message?

In a message released by his spokespeople on Monday, Prigozhin said, “According to preliminary data, we are beginning to receive ammunition,” adding that “we have not (yet) seen it in practice.”

Furthermore, he also claimed that “today, the groups advanced a maximum of 130 metres (400 feet)...Fierce fighting is going on, but the groups are continuing to advance,” said the Wagner chief, in an audio message.

He also indicated that Ukrainian forces were confined to an area of about 2.36 square kilometres (0.9 square miles) in the town.

Wagner chief threatens to leave Bakmut

In a series of scathing videos, Wagner’s chief blamed the Russian military’s top brass for “tens of thousands” of killed and wounded Russian fighters in Ukraine and vowed to hold them accountable over what he claimed was a failure to provide fighters from his mercenary group.

Subsequently, in a written statement on the messaging app Telegram, he wrote, “On May 10, 2023 we will have to hand over our positions in Bakhmut to units of the defence ministry and withdraw Wagner units to rear camps to lick our wounds.” The Wagner chief added, “I will pull out Wagner units from Bakhmut because, in the absence of ammunition, they are facing a senseless death.”

The next day, he asked Moscow to let him hand over his positions in the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. “I ask you to issue a combat order before 00:00 on May 10 concerning the transfer of the positions of the Wagner paramilitary units in Bakhmut and its periphery, to the units of the Akhmat battalion,” said Prigozhin, in a letter to Shoigu.

However, in a new message on Sunday, Prigozhin hinted at the possibility of backtracking his ultimatum after assurances from the Russian government. “The bottom line is the following: they promise to give us ammunition and weapons, as much as we need to continue further actions.”

Wagner chief says fighters begin to receive ammo after threatening to pull out of Bakhmut

A Ukrainian refugee family that escaped the war in their home country and fled to the United States has received the miracle they were hoping for their toddler, the 'gift of sound'.

In a heartwarming story of hope, a young Ukrainian war refugee named Zlata has been given the gift of sound by a team of dedicated doctors in South Carolina. Zlata, who was born deaf, received a cochlear implant that has allowed her to hear for the first time in her life.

Parents Diana Kuzmina and her husband Olech Kuzmin as per CBS were for months haunted by the fear that their young daughter, two-year-old Zlata Kuzmina, was completely deaf and would forever be denied the sense many of us take for granted.

Thanks to a "very nice" doctor, the toddler can now hear.

The family travelled from their home in Odesa, Ukraine, to the United States. The trip, which took nearly two months, had them stay in Moldova, the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany, before finally settling in Boiling Springs, South Carolina.

Once in the US, the father Oleh Kuzmin landed a job at a nearby BMW plant, and as per his wife Diana Kuzmina, the miracle happened because "a lot of people prayed for us and God sent us a very good team and a very nice doctor."

CBS identifies the "very nice doctor" as Dr Teddy McRackan, a surgeon and cochlear implant specialist.

Upon running a spate of diagnostics, McRackan and his team at the Medical University of South Carolina found that the two-year-old girl was deaf in her left ear, but that "she was responding at very, very loud levels to noise in that right ear."

In a procedure done at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital, a cochlear implant was placed in Zlata's ear. But there was still no guarantee that the little Ukrainian refugee would be able to hear.

After a month of waiting for the surgical incision to heal, in April, the implant was turned on and they found that the procedure was a success. Although Zlata's deafness is not completely cured, the device attached to her head, and the implant enables her to hear.

Two-year-old Ukrainian refugee receives 'gift of sound' in United States

Russian mercenary Wagner Group's chief Yevgeny Prigozhin on Friday threatened to pull his frontline troops out of Bakhmut. In a series of scathing videos, the Wagner chief blamed Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov for "tens of thousands" of killed and wounded Russian fighters in Ukraine. Ahead of an expected Ukrainian offensive, Prigozhin's extraordinary attack on military chiefs, as per AFP, has exposed a deep rift in Russian ranks.

Vowing to hold the generals to account for their failure to provide his fighters with sufficient ammunition, the paramilitary leader said: "For the tens of thousands killed and wounded, they will bear responsibility in front of their mothers and children, I will achieve that."

"Their unprofessionalism is destroying tens of thousands of Russian guys and that is unforgivable," he added.

Here's all you need to know about Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and his anger at Russian generals.

Who is Yevgeny Prigozhin?

Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin is a Russian oligarch and a confidant of President Vladimir Putin, who is often called "Putin's chef."

His nickname stems from the fact that he owns restaurants and catering companies that provide services for the Kremlin.

The Wagner chief started his career as a petty criminal and even spent a decade behind bars for crime. Released from jail in 1990, he started selling hotdogs and before long owned a chain of supermarkets, before opening a restaurant called the Old Customs House which became one of Putin's favourite haunts.

Prigozhin and Putin

As per the Guardian, the Wagner chief and the Russian President met back when Putin was deputy mayor of St Petersburg, serving under the-then mayor, Anatoly Sobchak.

Putin was reportedly a frequent patron of Prigozhin's restaurant, Old Customs House, on St Petersburg's Vasilievsky Island; even after ascending to the post of Russian President, he would often take his guests to the restaurant, which by then had been turned into a floating restaurant.

He would soon go on to win contracts and cater for major government events through Concord, a holding company he had set up back in the 1990s. Next, he would win giant government supply contracts worth billions of roubles to provide food to Moscow’s schools and eventually the army.

In 2014, he founded Wagner to support Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.

As Prigozhin describes it: "I cleaned the old weapons myself, sorted out the bulletproof vests myself and found specialists who could help me with this. From that moment, on 1 May 2014, a group of patriots was born, which later came to be called the Wagner Battalion."

"I am proud that I was able to defend their right to protect the interests of their country," he added in the September 2022 statement, posted by his catering company, Concord.

The Wagner Group

Prigozhin controls a network of influential companies and is the founder of the Russian state-backed mercenary company Wagner Group.

The group, as per the Business Insider report, has played a significant role in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and was reportedly deployed to assassinate Ukrainian leaders. As per Russian media outlet Mediazona, the Wagner group has also been recruiting prisoners for frontline combat.

Wagner Group's ranks according to Western intelligence estimates have ballooned to about 50,000. This includes tens of thousands of ex-prisoners recruited from jails around Russia, often personally by Prigozhin.

The group has been accused of committing human rights abuses in Ukraine, Syria, Libya, Central African Republic, Sudan and Mozambique.

As per a report by Polygraph, Prigozhin also controls three companies that have been accused of interference in the 2016 and 2018 US elections. For the alleged influencing of elections, Prigozhin, along with six other individuals was even (re) designated under the Specially Designated Nationals And Blocked Persons List (SDN).

Prigozhin’s anger at Russian generals

The Wagner chief in a series of scathing videos has threatened to pull out his troops from Bakhmut.

"I will pull out Wagner units from Bakhmut because, in the absence of ammunition, they are facing a senseless death," said Prigozhin in a recently released video statement. He added that he was now expecting a plan from the military on how to implement the withdrawal.

As per AFP, while Prigozhin has made similar threats to pull out in the past, the emotive language and the scathing personal criticism of the leaders of Russia's campaign in Ukraine were unprecedented.

The Wagner chief claims that Russian generals are "withholding" ammunition urgently needed by his men. In February of this year, he had even termed the withholding of munition supplies as "treason".

Previously, in December 2022, he accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of cutting him off completely and said that he has been unable to get through to anyone at the Kremlin.

On his Telegram channel, he said, "To get me to stop asking for ammunition, all the hotlines to offices, to departments etc., have been cut off from me. But the real humdinger is that they’ve also blocked agencies from making decisions [related to Wagner]."

Russia on Saturday blamed Ukraine and the West for the car explosion which involved the pro-Kremlin writer Zakhar Prilepin.

A Russian nationalist and prominent pro-Kremlin writer Zakhar Prilepin was injured in a car “explosion” on Saturday and one person was killed, informed the interior ministry after multiple drone attacks took place recently as the fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces escalated.

"According to initial reports, one person was killed by the explosion, and the writer Zakhar Prilepin, who was in the car, was injured" in the Nizhny Novgorod region, which is at a distance of 400 kilometres (250 miles) from Moscow, the ministry stated.

The Russian Investigative Committee, which investigates serious crimes, said that Prilepin was "travelling with his family" when the blast took place.

Russia's TASS news agency separately quoted an official from emergency services who stated that the writer was wounded in the explosion but was conscious after the incident.

Reacting to the incident, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated on Telegram, "The fact has come true: Washington and NATO fed another international terrorist cell — the Kyiv regime."

She added that it was the "direct responsibility of the US and Britain", but gave no evidence which can support the accusation made by her. "We pray for Zakhar," she stated.

TASS agency reported that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the incident in the wake of no information from investigators.

Russia blames Ukraine, West for pro-Kremlin writer Zakhar Prilepin’s car bombing

Ukraine announced on Saturday that it has downed a Russian hypersonic Kinzhal missile for the first time amid continuous attacks by Moscow that took place in the night between last Wednesday and Thursday in Kyiv.

The downing of Russian hypersonic missiles is being seen as a major setback to Russia's campaign of long-range air strikes.

The Ukraine Air Force announced that they shot down the Kh-47 Kinzhal missile in the skies of Kyiv using a US Patriot air defence system in the skies at around 2:30 am on Thursday (2330 GMT Wednesday).

"I congratulate the Ukrainian people on the historic event," said Ukrainian Air Force Commander General Mykola Oleshchuk on Telegram. "Yes, we shot down the 'unparallelled' Kinzhal' missile," he added.

The US Patriot system is among an array of sophisticated air defence units which was supplied to Ukraine by the West to repel Russia's month-long campaign of air strikes which had targeted the country's power facilities, critical infrastructure, and other sites.

What is a Kinzhal missile?

The word Kinzhal means "dagger" in Russian. Kinzhal missile is among the six "next generation" weapons which President Vladimir Putin had unveiled in 2018 and had boasted as one of those missiles which cannot be shot down by any air defence system of the world.

Putin had termed Kinzhal missile as "an ideal weapon" that the missile defences find extremely difficult to intercept.

According to the Russian military, the ballistic missile boasts a range of up to 2,000km (1,250 miles) and flies 10 times faster than the speed of sound which makes it difficult to intercept.

The ballistic missile is capable of carrying conventional or nuclear warheads. Kinzhal missile is 8 metres long, has a body diameter of 1 metrer, and its launch weight is approximately 4,300 kg.

The missile has been designed to be launched using MiG-31 fighter jets from an altitude of about 18 km (59,000 ft). During all stages of the flight, this missile manoeuvres to overcome hostile air defence systems.

How much damage can a Kinzhal missile cause?

Although Russia has claimed that the missile is among “next generation” systems, however, experts in the West say that these claims are exaggerated.

The Centre for Strategic and International Studies states that “Russia’s designation of the Kinzhal as a ‘hypersonic’ missile is somewhat misleading, as nearly all ballistic missiles reach hypersonic speeds… at some point during their flight.”

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence said that the use of the Kinzhal was “likely intended to detract from a lack of progress in Russia’s ground campaign” and “unlikely to materially affect the outcome of Russia’s campaign” in Ukraine.

The major difference between Kinzhal and its purported predecessor is that the missile is launched using an airborne vehicle and not from the ground, which makes it less predictable and more difficult to intercept, and also more survivable compared to the Iskander ground system.

The Kinzhal missile can also be seen as a precision weapon which can easily strike key targets like command centres and with its high speed, the missile can easily penetrate even deeply buried bunkers. However, for achieving such a feat, good information about the target location is required.

Even though Kinzhal is considered as a dangerous weapon, most analysts agree that it is not very different from weapons which have been in use for decades.

Any previous use of Kinzhal for the attack was not previously disclosed by the Air Force, although Kyiv officials immediately stated that there has been an involvement of a ballistic missile.

Ukraine's efforts to strengthen the air defence system

Ukraine also appealed to the Western allies to help in reinforcing the country's air defence system as its energy infrastructure has been pounded by Russia from the air over winter.

Ukraine in mid-April received the first Patriots which is considered as one of the most advanced air defence systems of the United States.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the system would "significantly" strengthen the defences of the country against Russian strikes.

The strikes failed to paralyse the power grid but led to major power outages. Russia has constantly denied targeting civilians.

Russia made the air strikes on Thursday a day after it accused Ukraine of making a failed attempt to assassinate President Vladimir Putin through a drone attack over the Kremlin citadel in Moscow and said that it would retaliate.

Since then, Moscow has accused Washington of being involved in the assassination plan but the allegations were denied by both the United States and Ukraine.

The drone and missile attacks over regions of Ukraine have been intensified by Russia in the past week as Kyiv prepares for a counter-offensive against the Russian army who have dug in across occupied land in the south and east.

The Centre for Strategic and International Studies states that “Russia’s designation of the Kinzhal as a ‘hypersonic’ missile is somewhat misleading, as nearly all ballistic missiles reach hypersonic speeds… at some point during their flight.” Meanwhile, the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence said that the use of the Kinzhal was “likely intended to detract from a lack of progress in Russia’s ground campaign” and “unlikely to materially affect the outcome of Russia’s campaign” in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday (May 3) that his country did not attack Russian President Vladimir Putin after Moscow claimed that two drones were shot down over the Kremlin and termed it an assassination attempt. "We didn't attack Putin... We fight on our territory, we are defending our villages and cities," Zelensky told reporters at a press conference with Nordic leaders in Finland's capital city Helsinki. "We fight on our territory. We are defending our villages and cities. We don't have, you know, enough weapons for this, that's why we don't use it anywhere. For us that is the deficit, we can't spend it and we didn't attack Putin. We leave it to the tribunal," Zelensky added. He thanked Niinisto for the military support to Ukraine so far and said the two have agreed to speed up further deliveries. The Ukrainian president also participated in a summit in Helsinki which saw a gathering of the leaders of the five Nordic nations. Zelensky reaffirmed that Ukraine aims to be a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), while the Nordic NATO members said they would "continue to support Ukraine on its path towards future membership." Zelensky's visit to Finland was announced only after his arrival amid tight security in the Finnish capital. Recently, Finland joined NATO in response to Russia's offensive in Ukraine. Hitting back at the membership of the intergovernmental military alliance, Russia said Finland's accession to NATO was a dangerous historic mistake that would weaken security in the wider region and force Moscow to take counter-measures. In an audio message published on social media, Yevgeny Prigozhin, chief of Russia’s Wagner Group, on Wednesday (May 3), said he believes that Ukraine has “already begun” its counter-offensive. This comes after he claimed that his forces have seen heightened activity by Ukrainian troops along the front lines.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the death toll from Russian strikes on the country’s southern Kherson region has risen to 21 after authorities in Kyiv said Russian strikes hit both the city and nearby villages.

The Pentagon, on Wednesday, announced a $300 million military aid package to Ukraine as it prepares for the spring counter-offensive.

In the clip posted on social media, Prigozhin also said that the “active phase” of Ukraine's counteroffensive would begin in the coming days. “I believe the advance of the Ukrainian army has already begun...We are seeing the greatest possible activity both on the perimeter and within the front lines,” said the Wagner chief, as quoted by Reuters.

He added, “I therefore believe that it has all already started. And I believe it will all enter an active phase in the very near future. It could be a matter of days.” This comes as the Ukrainian forces have long promised to launch a counteroffensive and start taking back territory in the east which Russia has occupied after it began its invasion in February 2022.

In a subsequent statement, Prigozhin said his forces have advanced some 700 feet in the eastern Ukrainian town of Bakhmut which has witnessed some of the most intense battles since the conflict began, reported Reuters.

He also reiterated his complaint about the Russian government ignoring his pleas to increase supplies of shells and said, “We only have resources for a few days. They (ministry of defence) ignore all requests from Wagner.”

Zelensky about shelling in Kherson

Zelensky took to Telegram and said, “As of now, 21 people have been killed! 48 wounded!” Officials in the region also imposed a curfew in the main city of Kherson starting Friday. The Ukrainian president also said the strikes hit “a railway station and a crossing, a house, a hardware store, a grocery supermarket and a gas station.”

He also published images of bodies and wounded people on the floor of a supermarket and said “The world needs to see and know this.” According to Kherson prosecutors, who have since called these attacks “massive,” 12 people were killed in the city and others in nearby villages.

“On the morning of May 3, Russian troops began massive shelling of the city of Kherson and the region's settlements,” said the prosecutors, as quoted by AFP.

United States announces more aid for Ukraine

The United States, on Wednesday, announced that it is sending a new $300 million military aid package to Ukraine which will also include “additional ammunition” for the US-provided HIMARS.

Among other weapons, are “howitzers, artillery and mortar rounds, and anti-armour capabilities,” which the US says, “Ukraine is using to push back against Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression.” Notably, the US has now committed a little over $35 billion in military to Ukraine.

Tinder 'swipes left' on Russia, to 'dump' the warring nation by June 30

Ahead of an anticipated counter-offensive by Ukraine, the Russian army has replaced its highest-ranking general in charge of logistics. Colonel General Mikhail Mizintsev, who is under British sanctions for his role in the siege of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol — seized by Russia around a year ago — has been replaced by Alexei Kuzmenkov, a former official from the National Guard, according to a statement from the Russian defence ministry.

"Kuzmenkov was appointed to the position of deputy defence minister of the Russian Federation, responsible for the logistical support of the Armed Forces," said the ministry in its statement. As per AFP, the statement did not mention why Mizintsev had been replaced after only seven months on the job.

'Butcher of Mariupol': Russia replaces its logistics commander ahead of Ukraine counteroffensive

The discount given by Russia to India for crude oil has decreased as China's demand for the product rockets. Quoting two Indian government officials in the know, Mint reports that the steep discounts the country enjoyed through most of FY23 have plunged due to Chinese demand and a cut at oil producers' end.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine, back in February 2022, sparked a slew of Western sanctions. Following this, as Moscow was left scrambling for buyers for its crude oil, India stepped up as a major buyer and managed to secure discounts of up to $15-20 a barrel. As per the Mint report, these discounts have now fallen below $10 and have even touched $5.

“With Russian oil finding more buyers, the discounts to Indian refiners have been coming down. Earlier, we were getting discounts that varied from cargo to cargo," one official told Mint, on the condition of anonymity.

“We used to get around $15-20 per barrel discount on Russian oil cargoes depending on what used to be the price in the spot market. That discount has become less now," said the second official.

However, recently, China, which happens to be the world's second-largest oil buyer, has become one of the top buyers of Russian oil.

As per Chinese government data, while earlier Saudi Arabia was the country's top oil supplier, Russia has taken over the position during January and February 2023.

China's General Administration of Customs in March released data that showed the number of imports from Russia in January-February was 15.68 million tonnes, which is equivalent to 1.94 million barrels per day (mbpd), an increase of 23.8 per cent from 1.57 mbpd during the same period the year before.

This comes as a US-led global initiative along with G7 countries, the European Union and Australia imposed a $60 per barrel cap on Russian oil. Meanwhile, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries plus grouping (OPEC+) which includes Russia, has announced an additional 1.16 million barrels per day of supply cut. This takes effect next month.

During FY23, by providing discounts amidst the Ukraine conflict, Russia became a significant provider of oil to Indian refiners for the first time. As a result, in the 11 months leading up to February of the previous fiscal year, India imported crude oil worth $27 billion from its strategic partner, placing the Russian Federation in second place for Indian oil imports. Additionally, the discounted Russian oil aided India in satisfying the rising demand for petroleum products. India consumed 222.30 million tonnes of petroleum products in FY23, 10.2 per cent more than in the previous year.

Also read | Explosions reported throughout Ukraine; Council of Europe says Russia's deportation of children 'genocide' “With Russian oil finding more buyers, the discounts to Indian refiners have been coming down. Also read | India tells China peace along borders will define bilateral ties China's General Administration of Customs in March released data that showed the number of imports from Russia in January-February was 15.68 million tonnes, which is equivalent to 1.94 million barrels per day (mbpd), an increase of 23.8 per cent from 1.57 mbpd during the same period the year before. Meanwhile, on Thursday Russian troops as per Ukrainian officers tried to cut off essential supply routes into Ukraine’s Bakhmut. This, as per the officers, was done with the motive of putting more pressure on defending forces.

Talking to the Freedom television channel, spokesperson for Ukrainian troops in the east Serhiy Cherevatyi, revealed that in the past 24 hours, Bakhmut had seen 13 new combats.

“The enemy’s main goal in the Bakhmut sector is to cut communication routes,” he said, adding that, “thanks to constant counter-battery combat ... we can deliver supplies and evacuate our wounded.”

Ukrainian military analyst Oleksander Musiyenko, as per Reuters, said that districts were rapidly changing hands in fierce fighting that has already gone on for 15 months.

Furthermore, in a resolution adopted on Thursday, the Council of Europe has branded Russia’s forced transfer of Ukrainian children as amounting to ‘genocide.’

Calling for the safe return of the children back home to Ukraine, it said “The documented evidence of this practice matches with the international definition of genocide.”

Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, hailed the resolution as an “important,” decision and said that it would help “hold Russia and its leaders to account”.

In his evening address, he called the forced transfer of Ukrainian children an element of “Russia’s attempt to erase the identity of our people, to destroy the very essence of the Ukrainian people”, he said in his evening address.

Previously, on March 17, the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, over Moscow’s “unlawful deportation” of children. The court also issued a warrant for Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia’s presidential commissioner for children’s rights.

17 dead after Russian missiles hit Ukraine; Council of Europe says Moscow's deportation of children 'genocide'

United State's proposal for the Group of Seven (G7) countries to ban all exports to Russia was met with resistance, ahead of a summit of the bloc.

As per a Financial Times report, the European Union (EU) and Japan pushed back against the proposal during negotiations ahead of a summit of the world's most advanced economies.

According to documents seen by the Financial Times, G7 leaders are drafting a statement for their meeting in Hiroshima next month. This statement includes a US proposal for a pledge to replace the current sector-by-sector sanctions regime against Russia with a complete export ban, with a few exemptions for agricultural, medical and other products.

The pledge is reportedly prompted by Washington's frustration over the loopholes in the existing system that allow Russia to continue to import Western technology.

During a preparatory meeting last week, EU and Japan however said that the move isn't feasible. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one of the officials said that from their perspective "it is simply not do-able."

The US said that it would "continue to look for ways to hold Russia accountable."

The disagreement as per FT underscores the lack of additional options available to G& leaders as the Western nations seek to penalise Russia for its invasion of Ukraine that began 15 months back. Since then, a number of sanction measures designed to cut off Moscow's economy from the global markets and deprive it of Western imports of technology, machinery and finance.

Japan, EU say US plans to ban all exports to Russia 'simply not do-able'

Russia has started using its new T-14 Armata battle tanks to fire on Ukrainian positions, according to the RIA state news agency. However, the report claims that the tanks "have not yet participated in direct assault operations."

As per the report, the T-14 Armata battle tanks have been fitted with extra protection on their flanks, and crews have undergone "combat coordination" at training grounds in Ukraine.

RIA states that the tank, which on a highway has a maximum speed of 80 kilometres or 50 miles an hour, also boasts an unmanned turret.

Crew can remotely control the armaments from "an isolated armoured capsule located in the front of the hull," reports Reuters.

This news comes just a couple of months after the British military intelligence in January reported that Russian forces in Ukraine were reluctant to accept the first tranche of the tanks due to their "poor condition."

"Production is probably only in the low tens, while commanders are unlikely to trust the vehicle in combat," the British military said.

"Eleven years in development," the programme has been dogged with delays, reduction in planned fleet size, and reports of manufacturing problems, it said.

British military intelligence also claimed that any deployment of the T-14 would likely be "a high-risk decision" for Russia, taken primarily for propaganda purposes.

Russian media reports state that the Kremlin had ordered the production of 2,300 tanks by 2020, but this was later stretched to 2025.

State conglomerate Rostec, as per Interfax news agency reports, had started production of some 40 tanks in 2021, with an anticipated delivery after 2023.

Just a day earlier (April 24th) the Russia-Ukraine war crossed its 15 months mark. The current conflict started on February 24th 2022 with an order from Russian President Vladimir Putin, and over its course, has already resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives and millions in infrastructure loss.

Russian T-14 Armata battle tank debuts in Ukraine

At the United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday (April 24), Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned the 15-member body about the world reaching a threshold “possibly even more dangerous” than during the Cold War. At the same forum, Western diplomats accused Moscow, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the UNSC, of hypocrisy while some also condemned its invasion of Ukraine.

Lavrov’s remarks at the UNSC

Russia’s top diplomat was leading the session titled “maintenance of international peace and security,” which was focused on the maintenance of the UN charter, international rules, and multilateralism. “As during the Cold War, we have reached the dangerous, possibly even more dangerous threshold,” said Lavrov, while addressing the council.

He added, “the situation is worsened with the loss of trust in multilateralism.” The Russian foreign minister also went on to talk about how “nobody allowed the Western minority to speak for all of humankind. They need to be polite and respect all members of the international community.”

Lavrov also accused the “United States and its allies” of “abandoning diplomacy and demanding clarification of relations on the battlefield.”

Notably, the last time Russia presided over the council was February 2022 which is the same month it launched what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Lavrov, during his address, mentioned acts of aggression by the West including the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the invasion of Iraq, and so on.

The West slams Russia

During the session, several diplomats including the United States, United Kingdom, and Switzerland condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “Our hypocritical convener today, Russia, invaded its neighbour, Ukraine, and struck at the heart of the UN Charter,” said the US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

She added, “This illegal, unprovoked and unnecessary war runs directly counter to our most shared principles – that a war of aggression and territorial conquest is never, ever acceptable.” Furthermore, the US representative also spoke about how as they sit there as “aggression continues…Russian forces continue to kill and injure civilians.”

The US representative also called for the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. The meeting was also attended by Elizabeth Whelan, an American whose brother, Paul Whelan, is imprisoned in Russia.

Ahead of the UNSC session, the European Union countries, along similar lines, issued a statement which condemned Moscow. “Russia is trying to portray itself as a defender of the UN charter and multilateralism. Nothing can be further from the truth. It’s cynical,” said Olaf Skoog, the EU representative to the UN.

UN chief criticises Russia over its invasion of Ukraine

In his opening remarks to the session, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres who was sitting next to Lavrov also condemned the Russian invasion and said that it was in “violation of the United Nations Charter and international law, is causing massive suffering and devastation to the country and its people, and adding to the global economic dislocation triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic”.

He added, “Tensions between major powers are at an historic high. So are the risks of conflict, through misadventure or miscalculation.”

Russia’s Lavrov warns about world being on ‘dangerous threshold’, slammed by West at UNSC

China’s ambassador to France has sparked anger and dismay among eastern European countries after questioning the sovereignty of former Soviet countries including Ukraine. The Chinese ambassador Lu Shaye, in an interview on Friday (April 22) seemingly suggested that countries that emerged after the fall of the Soviet Union are not really sovereign.

What did the Chinese envoy say?

Speaking with France’s LCI news channel, Shaye said, “These ex-USSR countries don’t have actual status in international law because there is no international agreement to materialize their sovereign status.”

The remarks were made after he was asked whether he believes Crimea is part of Ukraine or not. Crimea was annexed by Russia back in 2014. The Chinese ambassador, in this context, also said, “it depends on how you look at the problem. There's history. Crimea was Russian at the start.”

These comments have not only cast doubt not just on Ukraine which is in the midst of an invasion by Russia but on most eastern European countries which emerged as independent nations after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, many of which are also members of the European Union.

How have the countries reacted?

After the interview, France and eastern European countries released statements in response to the Chinese envoy’s comments. Paris, late Saturday, stated its “full solidarity” with all the allied countries affected, which it said had acquired their independence “after decades of oppression”.

The French foreign ministry also said that it had “learned with consternation about the statements from the ambassador.” It added, “It remains up to China to say whether these statements reflect its position which we hope not to be the case.”

Following the interview, Ukraine condemned what it called “absurd” comments from the Chinese ambassador. On Sunday, the Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhaylo Podolyak said the status of post-Soviet countries was “enshrined in international law”.

He added, "It is strange to hear an absurd version of the ‘history of Crimea’ from a representative of a country that is scrupulous about its 1,000-year history.”

Meanwhile, Latvia’s foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics took to Twitter and wrote, “Remarks by the Chinese Ambassador in France concerning international law and sovereignty of nations are completely unacceptable. We expect (an) explanation from the Chinese side and complete retraction of this statement.”

Additionally, his Lithuanian counterpart, Gabrielius Landsbergis said, “If anyone is still wondering why the Baltic States don't trust China to 'broker peace in Ukraine', here's a Chinese ambassador arguing that Crimea is Russian and our countries' borders have no legal basis,” reported AFP.

The Estonian foreign minister, Margus Tsahkna, also called Shaye's comments “false and a misinterpretation of history.” The three Baltic countries have reportedly said that they would each summon China’s ambassador or representative for an explanation of the envoy’s comments.

Speaking with France’s LCI news channel, Shaye said, “These ex-USSR countries don’t have actual status in international law because there is no international agreement to materialize their sovereign status.” ALSO READ | Philippines raises concerns over 'escalating tensions' Taiwan Strait amid talks with China The remarks were made after he was asked whether he believes Crimea is part of Ukraine or not. Crimea was annexed by Russia back in 2014. The Chinese ambassador, in this context, also said, “it depends on how you look at the problem. There's history. Crimea was Russian at the start.” These comments have not only cast doubt not just on Ukraine which is in the midst of an invasion by Russia but on most eastern European countries which emerged as independent nations after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, many of which are also members of the European Union. How have the countries reacted? After the interview, France and eastern European countries released statements in response to the Chinese envoy’s comments. Paris, late Saturday, stated its “full solidarity” with all the allied countries affected, which it said had acquired their independence “after decades of oppression”. ALSO READ | Brazil’s Lula doesn’t want to ‘please anyone’ over Ukraine stance, faces protests amid visit in Lisbon The French foreign ministry also said that it had “learned with consternation about the statements from the ambassador.” It added, “It remains up to China to say whether these statements reflect its position which we hope not to be the case.” Following the interview, Ukraine condemned what it called “absurd” comments from the Chinese ambassador. On Sunday, the Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhaylo Podolyak said the status of post-Soviet countries was “enshrined in international law”. He added, "It is strange to hear an absurd version of the ‘history of Crimea’ from a representative of a country that is scrupulous about its 1,000-year history.” ALSO READ | Finland fencing along Russian border amid security concerns after joining NATO Meanwhile, Latvia’s foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics took to Twitter and wrote, “Remarks by the Chinese Ambassador in France concerning international law and sovereignty of nations are completely unacceptable. We expect (an) explanation from the Chinese side and complete retraction of this statement.” Additionally, his Lithuanian counterpart, Gabrielius Landsbergis said, “If anyone is still wondering why the Baltic States don't trust China to 'broker peace in Ukraine', here's a Chinese ambassador arguing that Crimea is Russian and our countries' borders have no legal basis,” reported AFP. The Estonian foreign minister, Margus Tsahkna, also called Shaye's comments “false and a misinterpretation of history.” The three Baltic countries have reportedly said that they would each summon China’s ambassador or representative for an explanation of the envoy’s comments. Chinese ambassador questions sovereignty of former Soviet countries; France, Ukraine, Baltic nations dismayed

The recently elected Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has garnered criticism over his stance on the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and said he does not want to “please anyone” with his views about the conflict, on Saturday (April 22), amid his five-day visit to Portugal.

What did Lula say in Lisbon?

The statement came after he arrived a day prior, in Portugal, and was faced with protests as many stood waving Ukrainian flags and holding photographs depicting conflict atrocities outside the Brazilian embassy in Lisbon.

Lula’s stance has not only angered the people in Lisbon but also the West and Kyiv for suggesting Ukraine and Russia are to blame for the conflict that began over a year ago. Addressing the press in the Portuguese capital, on Saturday, beginning his first visit to Europe after being elected president he called for a “negotiated” settlement between Kyiv and Moscow.

“While my government condemns the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, we support a negotiated political solution to the conflict,” said Lula, following a meeting with the Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. He added, “Brazil does not want to take part in this war. Brazil wants to create peace.”

Last week, the Brazilian president faced criticism after he said the United States and its European allies should stop supplying arms to Ukraine as they are prolonging the war. “If you are not making peace, you are contributing to war,” said Lula.

Subsequently, the White House accused him of “parroting Russian and Chinese propaganda”, while the Ukrainian government has criticised the Brazilian president for treating "the victim and the aggressor” the same way.

Protests in Lisbon over Lula’s visit

Portugal is a founding member of NATO and also sent military aid to Ukraine while the country’s president has previously said that Kyiv had the right to defend itself. On Saturday, Rebelo de Sousa also acknowledged that Portugal has a “different position” on the ongoing conflict adding that “for a road to peace to become a possibility, Ukraine must first have the right to respond to the invasion.”

The capital city of Portugal witnessed protests, on Friday, after many gathered outside the Brazilian embassy in Lisbon over Lula’s recent remarks.

A Ukrainian refugee named Yana Kolomiiets who was among the protesters and had been in Portugal for four months and said she felt “terrible” after hearing Lula’s comments last week, reported Reuters. The 27-year-old also said, “It has made me so upset because I don't know how the president of Brazil can support (Russian President Vladimir) Putin…this killer.”

More than 3,000 people in the Russian city of Belgorod were evacuated after another explosive object was found at the site where Moscow’s warplane accidentally fired a weapon which caused a blast, on April 20. The evacuation took place on Saturday (April 22) and a couple of hours later people returned home after the explosive was disposed of.

Around 3,000 people evacuated

Belgorod region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov took to messaging app Telegram, on Saturday and said that the Russian military’s explosive technicians have found “an explosive object” and decided to “disarm it at the range.” The range that the governor was referring to was a training ground.

“The operational headquarters decided to evacuate 17 apartment buildings within a radius of 200 metres. According to preliminary data, it is more than 3,000 people. Anyone who needs help with temporary accommodation, it will be provided,” said Gladkov, on Saturday, as per Reuters.

Hours later the governor said that people had started to return to their homes after the “shell” was removed from the area.

Russian jet accidentally fires weapon

The evacuation came days after a Su-34, a supersonic fighter-bomber jet accidentally fired a weapon in Belgorod which is near the border with Ukraine. This incident took place amid what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Kyiv.

After reports of an explosion in the Russian city, Moscow’s defence ministry released a statement saying that when a “Su-34 plane of the Russian Aerospace Forces was performing a flight above the city of Belgorod, an emergency release of an air ordnance occurred.”

The accidental discharge of aviation ammunition at the time had damaged some buildings and injured at least three people, as per media reports. However, the governor later said four cars and four apartment buildings were damaged while the blast had also left a crater measuring 20 metres across one of the main streets in the Russian city.

While footage of the site shows piles of concrete on the street, several damaged cars and a building with broken windows, reported Reuters, adding that one video also showed what appeared to be a car upside down on the roof of a store.

More than 3,000 residents evacuated from Russia's Belgorod over bomb scare, return home

Pakistan has made its first order for discounted Russian crude oil, according to an agreement between Islamabad and Moscow, the country's petroleum minister said.

As Moscow diverts oil from western markets due to the Ukraine war, the purchase of Pakistan gives Moscow a new market, boosting its sales to India and China, said a Reuters report.

Analysts say Pakistan would have found it difficult to accept the crude agreement, but the country desperately needs financing. Pakistan is a long-time ally of the West and the arch-rival of India, which is historically closer to Moscow.

As Pakistan experiences a severe balance of payments problem and faces the possibility of defaulting on its debt obligations, discounted crude offers relief. The central bank's foreign exchange reserves hardly have enough money to last four weeks of regulated imports.

The majority of the nation's foreign payments are made in the form of energy purchases.

Under the deal, Pakistan will buy only crude, not refined fuels, Minister Musadik Malik told Reuters late on Wednesday. Imports are expected to reach 100,000 barrels per day (bpd) if the first transaction goes through smoothly, he said.

Our orders are in, we have placed that already," he said, confirming source-based information that the country would not buy refined products.

The final agreement was struck recently, according to a Reuters source in Moscow with knowledge of the negotiations

An inquiry for comments was not answered by the Russian authorities.

Two trading sources acquainted with the conversations claimed that major Russian oil corporations have recently discussed the potential delivery of oil to Pakistan but have refrained from disclosing the names of potential suppliers. Under the condition of anonymity, one of the individuals claimed that Russia intended to provide Pakistan with Urals crude.

According to statistics from analytics company Kpler, Islamabad bought 154,000 bpd of oil in 2022, roughly maintaining the level from the previous year.

Saudi Arabia, the biggest exporter in the world, and the United Arab Emirates were the main suppliers of the crude. The 100,000 bpd from Russia should significantly reduce Pakistan's dependence on fuel from the Middle East.

After leading a trip to Islamabad in January, Russian Energy Minister Nikolay Shulginov declared that oil supplies to Pakistan could start after March.

Since early February, Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have been negotiating the release of a $1.1 billion tranche of a $6.5 billion bailout that was agreed upon January 2019.

Russian jet accidentally fires weapon in its own city Belgorod near Ukraine

A recently published study by the scientists at China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA), said big tech companies like TikTok, Google, Twitter, and so on, are involved in propaganda campaigns against Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine, reported the South China Morning Post (SCMP), on Friday (April 21). Notably, TikTok which has recently come under scrutiny is the only Chinese-owned entity on the list.

What did the report find?

The report was published in the Chinese-language journal Modern Defence Technology, earlier this month, which alleges that TikTok has joined Facebook, Twitter, Google and other Western tech giants to offer a “cognitive war” on Russia. This so-called war has “greatly undermined” Russian troops’ morale and eroded Moscow’s international image, said the SCMP citing the study.

Meanwhile, the study which was led by Ling Haifeng, a professor at the Army Engineering University of the PLA in Nanjing, Jiangsu province listed nearly 40 private entities from the internet, space, finance and artificial intelligence sectors.

Ling and her colleagues have defined cognitive warfare as an organised campaign aimed at manipulating the perceptions of targeted audiences and changing their decisions or behaviour. The study stated, “Combat in the cognitive domain is a new, advanced form of warfare. It is also the highest level of human (war) games,” reported the SCMP.

The study also noted how this is the first time that the so-called “cognitive warfare” is being used by civilian hi-tech companies during a large-scale war and that media-driven, particularly based on mobile internet “has had huge repercussions in this conflict.”

The report also alleged that the United States and its allies have used social media platforms to highlight content showing Russia’s cruelty and acts while Ukrainian politicians and forces have more friendly exposure, said the report by SCMP, citing the study.

Ling’s team also said how these companies are being offered a platform for government agents to employ AI to create fake texts, images and videos which “pushed the Russian army up against the gunpoint of public opinion.”

TikTok faces criticism

TikTok, which is owned by the Beijing-based parent company ByteDance, has faced intense scrutiny and criticism by the US and its allies since the beginning of conflict in Ukraine began, last year.

This comes as critics have reportedly said that the short video platform is not taking enough measures to counter Russian influence. Last month, a report by a US-based organisation called Alliance for Securing Democracy noted that Russia’s state-run broadcaster RT had more TikTok followers than The New York Times.

The national security advocacy group also found how the Russian news agency RIA Novosti’s top TikTok post, this year, gained more than 5.6 million views as opposed to its top Twitter post which had fewer than 20,000 views, reported SCMP.

When was he arrested? What charges were imposed against him?

Subsequently, on April 22, 2022, he was charged by a Russian court for spreading "false" information about the Russian troops. The charges were reportedly imposed for his March 15 speech to the Arizona House of Representatives, in which he denounced the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He was declared a "foreign agent" for his statement.

In July, new charges of cooperating with an "undesirable" foreign NGO were added, which comes with up to six years in prison. In October, for public speeches he made in Lisbon, Helsinki and Washington, he was charged with treason, a crime that carries up to 20 years in prison.

How did the Kremlin critic respond to the charges levied against him?

As per a copy of the speech Kara-Murza delivered to the court where he was sentenced to 25 years in prison, the Kremlin critic said he has done nothing wrong and that he was "proud" of his words.

"Criminals are supposed to repent of what they have done. I, on the other hand, am in prison for my political views. At discussions in Warsaw on Monday, Kyiv is attempting to re-open food and grain transit via Poland. As per Reuters, this is a "first step" to lifting the import restrictions after some nations stopped importing grain from Ukraine to safeguard their own agricultural markets from an influx of supplies.

This comes as Poland and Hungary on Saturday announced bans on some imports. Slovakia also announced a similar action and reportedly other nations in central and eastern Europe are also considering action.

"The first step, in our opinion, should be the opening of transit, because it is quite important and it is the thing that should be done unconditionally and after that we will talk about other things," said Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Mykola Solsky.

Poland's embargo, which came into effect Saturday evening, also applies to transit through the country to keep grain transport from entering the Polish market.

As import bans mount Ukraine seeks re-opening of grain transit via Poland

Ukraine brings home 130 of its troops in 'big Easter POW swap' with Russia

The Russian defence ministry, on Saturday (April 15), said that the fighters of Moscow’s Wagner mercenary group have captured two more areas of the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut. The city on the frontlines has witnessed some of the deadliest battles amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has recently taken on huge symbolic importance even though analysts say it has little strategic value, as per media reports.

Russia claims parts of Bakhmut

In a statement, the Russian defence ministry said, “On the Donetsk direction, the fiercest fighting has been continuing in the city of Artyomovsk,” referring to the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut by its Soviet-era name. It added, “Wagner assault units successfully advanced, capturing two areas on the northern and southern outskirts of the city.”

The Russian defence ministry also accused Ukrainian troops of “deliberately destroying city infrastructure and residential buildings in order to slow the advance” of Moscow’s forces, as they were supposedly retreating. Additionally, the statement also said that the Russian army paratroop units were supporting the claimed advance by holding back Ukrainian forces on the flanks.

This also comes after Moscow claimed to have cut off Ukrainian forces in Bakhmut, on Thursday. However, Ukraine has since denied these claims and said its troops had access and were able to send in munitions.

Who is fighting in the Ukrainian city and why?

Russia’s Wagner mercenary group which is headed by the Kremlin-linked businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin has reportedly led several fights and spearheaded Russia’s attempt to take the Ukrainian city since last summer. Meanwhile, Kyiv has said that Bakhmut is key to holding Russian forces away from the entire eastern front.

UK defence ministry update

In its intelligence updates, the United Kingdom, on Friday (April 14) said that the Ukrainian troops have been pushed back from some territory in Bakhmut as Russia mounted a renewed assault with intense artillery fire over the past two days or so. However, the Ukrainian defence still holds the western districts of the town, said the British Ministry of Defence.

It added, “Ukrainian forces face significant resupply issues but have made orderly withdrawals from the positions they have been forced to concede.” This also comes as Russia, on Friday, had said that it would push to take the western districts of the salt mining town which before the conflict had a population of 70,000 people.

Russian strike on Ukraine’s Sloviansk residential area kills 8; Moscow puts naval forces on high alert

Russian oil exports reached their highest level in nearly three years, despite sanctions from the West, said the International Energy Agency (IEA), on Friday (April 14). However, Moscow's oil revenues have dropped sharply from last year, it added. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine over a year ago, there have been thousands of sanctions against Russia including price caps on its exports and EU embargoes.

According to the IEA’s monthly oil market report, total shipments from Russia rose by 600,000 barrels per day to 8.1 million bpd last month, which is the highest since April 2020. However, while Moscow’s oil revenues rebounded by $1 billion to $12.7 billion, they were still nearly 43 per cent lower when compared to a year ago, said the Paris-based agency.

In March, Russian crude oil exports rose by 100,000 bpd to 5 million bpd with India effectively replacing China as Moscow’s main market in Asia, last month. Additionally, the IEA also said that the oil product shipments destined for the EU almost doubled between February and March to 300,000 bpd.

Months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the EU imposed an embargo on seaborne oil deliveries from Moscow in December along with a $60 per barrel price cap for exports across the world, the move which was agreed to by the Group of Seven (G7) nations and Australia.

Earlier this year, the EU expanded its ban on Russian oil and agreed with the G7 to the price ceilings of $100 per barrel for more expensive fuel like diesel and $45 on lower-quality products such as fuel oil.

Seemingly, in retaliation, Russia announced that it would be reducing its production by 500,000 bpd along with other OPEC+ member nations which sent shockwaves across the market.

According to the IEA, Russia missed its target in March as production fell by 290,000 bpd. “Consumers currently under siege from inflation will suffer even more from higher prices, especially in emerging and developing economies,” said the Paris-based agency. It added, “This augurs badly for the economic recovery and growth.”

The announcement, which cuts a total of 1.7 million bpd was also months after the group had agreed to a reduction of two million bpd back in November. The exports by Russia also returned pre-Covid levels as they have risen by 450,000 bpd to 3.1 million bpd.

Russian oil exports reached their highest level in nearly three years, despite sanctions from the West, said the International Energy Agency (IEA), on Friday (April 14).

It added, “This augurs badly for the economic recovery and growth.” The announcement, which cuts a total of 1.7 million bpd was also months after the group had agreed to a reduction of two million bpd back in November. The exports by Russia also returned pre-Covid levels as they have risen by 450,000 bpd to 3.1 million bpd.
