Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, on Friday, backed a fundraising campaign to help Kyiv build its fleet of naval drones to protect cities from Russian missiles fired from the Black Sea. The fundraising site claims that since the beginning of the invasion in February, Russia has launched over 4,000 missiles in Ukraine and “every fifth strike came from the sea”.

The initiative launched by Zelensky called United24 raises charitable donations for Ukraine and said that they need 100 drones, each of which costs 10 million hryvnias (around $274,000). “Naval drones will also help unblock the corridor for civilian ships transporting grain for the world,” said the Ukrainian president on Telegram on November 11.

“I am sure that millions of people will support this important area of Ukraine's defence,” Zelensky said in a statement. He added, “Everyone has already seen how it works,” while writing about the naval drone fundraising campaign.

Reportedly, since the beginning of the invasion, earlier this year, Russia has carried out missile strikes from its ships in the Black Sea and Crimea, a peninsula that Moscow annexed in 2014. Notably, Crimea is also the home to Russia's Black Sea Fleet, this comes after Moscow also moved to block Ukraine’s ports near the sea in order to halt the country’s grain exports.

However, it later resumed after a United Nations and Turkey brokered deal was signed unblocking three Ukrainian ports, back in July to ease the global food crisis. Meanwhile, Kyiv has also neither confirmed nor denied its role behind the drone attack last month which the statement on United24 said was the first of its kind carried out exclusively by unmanned devices. It added, “Russia has lost its once-undeniable advantage on the water.”

Zelensky backs fundraising campaign to help Ukraine buy naval drones to counter Russian strikes

The US and Russia have decided to resume talks related to the New START nuclear arms reduction deal, which was put on hold since before Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

New START, or Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, was signed between the United States and Russia. Its formal name is Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms. It is the only surviving weapons control pact between the two biggest nuclear powers in the world.

The bilateral consultative committee (BCC), the mechanism for its implementation, will meet "in the near future," said Ned Price, spokesperson for the US State Department, on Tuesday.

As mid-term elections loom the horizon, the White House on Monday said that the United State's support for Ukraine's war efforts will be "unwavering" even if Republicans were to win the elections. This comes as Iran on Saturday, in a first acknowledged that it had supplied Moscow with the drones that the nation has been using to attack its neighbours' power stations and civilian infrastructure. However, the nation clarified that the supply was delivered before the war.

Russia-Ukraine conflict: Tears flow as warring nations exchange prisoners of war

The United States is "privately encouraging" Ukrainian leaders to show they are willing to deal with Moscow and end their stand against holding peace negotiations until Russian President Vladimir Putin is removed from office.

As per a report by the Washington Post quoting people familiar with the discussions, the request made by American officials was not intended to pressure Ukraine into entering negotiations. Instead, it is reportedly a "calculated attempt" to ensure that Kyiv maintains the support of other countries hesitant to ignite a war.

The newspaper reported that while US officials agreed with their Ukrainian counterparts that Putin is not currently serious about negotiations, they also acknowledged that the ban on talks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had caused concern in parts of Europe, Africa, and Latin America, where the war's effects on food and fuel prices are most acute.

This comes as the United States has repeatedly voiced its support for Ukraine, vowing to support Kyiv with significant aid "for as long as it takes".

On Wednesday, the German carmaker Mercedes-Benz said it would quit the Russian market and sell its shares in the local subsidiaries to the country’s car dealer chain Avtodom, joining several other car manufacturers to exit Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine.

“Mercedes-Benz intends to sell its shares in Russian subsidiaries to a local investor,” said the Russian ministry of industry in a statement on Telegram. It added, “The new owner of the Russian divisions of Mercedes-Benz, Avtodom, will be able to attract other companies as partners for joint productions.”

This comes after carmakers like Nissan, Renault, Toyota and others have exited the Russian market due to its ongoing invasion of Ukraine. According to reports, Avtodom will retain “highly qualified jobs and competencies” at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Moscow but it is unclear if the employees will retain their jobs in the process. The production and import of Mercedes in Russia had been halted earlier this year in March.

Meanwhile, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz, Russia, Natalia Koroleva in a statement said, “The main priorities in agreeing the terms of the transaction were to maximise the fulfilment of obligations to clients from Russia both in terms of after-sales services and financial services, as well as preserving jobs of employees at the Russian divisions of the company.”

The German carmaker’s CFO Harald Wilhelm, while presenting the third-quarter reports, said that this transaction may not affect the company’s profits or financial position when compared to previous quarters. “The completion of the transaction is subject to the approval of all relevant authorities,” said the German carmaker in a statement.

Amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, reports have indicated that Kyiv and Moscow have accused each other of planning to blow up the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam on the Dnipro river. The dam is in the eastern Kherson region which is currently under Russian occupation.

The Kakhovka dam was built in 1956 on the Dnipro river as part of a hydroelectric power plant. It is 30 metres tall and 3.2 km long. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent address, the hydroelectric power plant holds a volume of about 18 million cubic metres of water.

The dam is also responsible for at least 85 per cent of the water supply to Crimea which was annexed by Russia in 2014, as well as the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant which is also occupied by Moscow. Reports suggest that blowing up this dam would lead to catastrophic floods in Kherson and surrounding areas, affecting hundreds and thousands of people.

In his overnight address on Thursday, Ukraine’s Zelensky alleged that the dam on the Dnipro river has been mined by Russia, while Moscow had previously accused Kyiv of firing missiles at the Kakhovka dam. According to Zelensky, if the dam is destroyed it could affect the water supply to much of southern Ukraine and also stop the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant’s supply of cooling water.

“If Russian terrorists blow up this dam, more than 80 settlements, including Kherson, will be in the zone of rapid flooding. Hundreds of thousands of people could be affected,” said Zelensky during the address. Reportedly, he also told the European leaders that after Russia blows up the dam it will blame Ukraine for it.

On the other hand, earlier on Thursday, Vladimir Leontyev, a Kremlin-installed official in Ukraine told Russian TV that Ukraine has fired five missiles against the Kakhovka dam as well as the power station and if it is destroyed it would sever the crucial canal providing water to Crimea.

This comes after, the commander of Russian forces in Ukraine, Sergei Surovikin, on Tuesday said, “We have information on the possibility of the Kyiv regime using prohibited methods of war in the area of the city of Kherson, on the preparation by Kyiv of a massive missile strike on the Kakhovka hydro-electric dam.” Meanwhile, another Kremlin-installed deputy head of the annexed Kherson region has reportedly said that Ukraine’s claims that Russia has mined the dam are false.

According to media reports, Ukraine’s presidential adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak, on Thursday said, “Russia is preparing a manmade catastrophe.” He alleged that Russia had mined the dam as well as the transformers to flood the lower Dnieper River, and reportedly called it the “Surovikin plan” which involves flooding the territory to stop Ukraine’s counter-offence in the region.

French agribusiness Danone said Friday it planned to transfer control of its essential dairy and plant-based business in Russia, retaining only its infant nutrition branch.

One of the few multinationals to have remained in Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, Danone said the move to "transfer the effective control" of the dairy business could result in a write-off of up to one billion euros ($980 million).

The arm represented five per cent of Danone's net sales in 2022 so far.

UNGA passes resolution condemning Russian 'illegal annexation' of Ukrainian land; India abstains from voting

On Thursday, the Swedish furniture giant Ikea after reporting a 6.5% increase in their full-year sales, calling it a “challenging” year lays off 10,000 employees in Russia as it makes its exit from the country, reported AFP.

Sources indicated that they shut down stores in Russia back in March following its invasion of Ukraine and said that it would sell its factories and close its offices in the country at the time. This also led to the reduction of its 15,000 people workforce in Moscow, said a different report. However, they had previously indicated that they would pay employees till the end of August.

Jesper Brodin, CEO of the holding company Ingka which oversees most of the Ikea stores in Moscow told the French news agency that they had to lay off around 10,000 of its 12,000 retail employees in Moscow. On the other hand, despite supply chain issues, shrinking customer confidence and their exit from Russia, Ikea announced record-high annual sales on October 13.

Inter Ikea, its holding company, in a statement, said, “Sales for FY22 were impacted by inflation and supply chain problems, which increased costs and raised prices. Thus, although sales have increased in dollar terms, they have not increased proportionately.” However, they added that supply chain issues made it challenging to keep the stores running.

The company claims that the high rate of inflation forced the furniture giant to end its policy of price stability, said media reports. Reportedly, despite setting another sales record Ikea’s growth has been attributed to the increase in the price as opposed to the volume of goods sold due to supply chain issues.

Biden says he can defeat Trump again; gets candid about Putin and the looming nuclear threat

On Tuesday, the Japanese car manufacturing company, Nissan Motor Co Ltd said that they sold their business in Russia, Nissan Manufacturing Russia LLC to state-owned entity NAMI for one euro ($0.97), incurring a loss of at least $687 million.

This comes months after the company was forced to shut down production in Moscow following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

On the other hand, Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Trade indicated that the Japanese company will transfer its shares to the state-owned entity and the deal allows the Japanese car manufacturing company to have the right to buy the business back within six years.

This move adds Nissan to the long list of companies that exited Moscow amid the ongoing invasion.

The sale to NAMI also includes Nissan’s production and research facilities based in St Petersburg as well as the sales and marketing centre in Moscow, said the report by Reuters. This deal was “of great significance for the industry,” said the Russian trade minister Denis Manturov in a statement.

According to Nissan, the production in the St Petersburg plant was halted in March itself due to supply chain issues but the local unit had since continued to monitor the situation. However, there was “no visibility” of change in the external environment which prompted the company’s exit, they added.

The Japanese car manufacturing company also said it expected a loss of at least 100 billion yen ($687 million) but reportedly did not change its earnings forecast for the financial year ending in March, said the report. However, Renault which owns nearly 43% of Nissan said that this decision would lead to a hit of at least 331 million euros to its net income in the second half of 2022.

This is also being compared to Nissan’s top shareholder, the French automaker, Renault’s move which also sold a majority of its stake to the Russian carmaker Avtovaz, earlier this year, in May. Notably, this also comes as the two companies, on Monday, said that Nissan was considering investing in the new electric vehicle venture by Renault.

Russia summons wheelchair-bound man to fight in the Ukrainian war

Former United States president Donald Trump has called for an immediate "peaceful end" to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, which started this year on February 24 when Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a "special military operation" in the neighbouring country.

While speaking at a "Save America" rally in the US state of Nevada on Saturday, the former president warned that "nothing would be left of our earth all because ignorant people didn't have a clue" about the dangers of escalation and nuclear weapons.

Trump said: "We must demand the immediate negotiation of a peaceful end to the war in Ukraine, or we will end up in World War III and there will be nothing left of our planet."

Russian opposition politician and Kremlin critic charged with ‘treason’

In response to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s calls for peace, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he will not conduct any negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was during a telephonic conversation in which PM Modi conveyed India’s willingness to mediate peace efforts amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Modi asserted that there is no military solution to the conflict. Furthermore, he called for the cessation of hostilities, reiterated his calls for diplomacy and the importance of respecting the United Nations Charter, International Law, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states, said an official statement.

The statement also said that PM Modi emphasised the importance India attaches to the safety and security of nuclear installations, including in Ukraine. He further underlined the far-reaching and catastrophic consequences of the endangerment of nuclear facilities on both public health and the environment.

According to reports, the Ukrainian President referred to the four Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine -- Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson -- and noted that all the aggressor's decisions are aimed at attempting illegal annexation of Ukraine’s territories and are null and void and do not change reality. Ukraine will not negotiate with Russia: Zelensky responds to Indian PM Modi’s calls for peace

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has warned its members that Russian President Vladimir Putin has deployed Poseidon, a nuclear weapon that is also known as the "weapon of the Apocalypse".

Apparently, over the weekend, NATO issued a warning note that was leaked to Italian Media. As per the note, the doomsday weapon is on its way from its base in the Arctic circle to the Kara Sea.

What did the warning note say?

As per the note, the Belgorod, a huge nuclear submarine, has gone missing from its home base in the Arctic circle and it may be on its way to test out a destructive, dangerous nuclear weapon called Poseidon.

What is Poseidon?

It is an 'Intercontinental Nuclear-Powered Nuclear-Armed Autonomous Torpedo' that is believed to be capable of travelling huge distances underwater.

Poseidon is capable of a detonation that can trigger a 1,600 ft nuclear tsunami that is "designed to drown and irradiate coastal cities" reports Daily Mail.

The next-generation weapon was announced by the Russian president back in 2018. As per Russian media, the doomsday weapon can travel up to 6,000 miles under water. It packs an explosion of two megatonnes. For context, this is more than 130 times the nuclear explosion of "Little Boy", the atomic bomb that wrecked Hiroshima in Japan back in August 1945 during World War II.

As per Naval News, "It is a giant torpedo which can hit coastal cities with devastating results. Compared to an intercontinental ballistic missile it is very slow, but possibly unstoppable."

Italian publication La Reppubblica quoted an expert HI Sutton as saying that Poseidon "is a completely new category of weapon - which will oblige a change in the planning of the western navies, leading to the definition of new requirements and new means to counter it".

As per Daily Mail, the weapon has never been tested thanks to the international prohibition on testing of nuclear weapons, and if Russia does test it now, this would mark a highly "provocative" move by the nation.

How did Ukraine react to the warning?

Pravda reports that Ukraine, which has for the past few months been facing aggression and destruction at the hands of Russia, has urged the media not to spread disinformation and called the information manipulative.

As per a Facebook post by Ukraine's National Security and Defence of Ukraine [NSDC], "information about the submarine 'Belgorod' can play on the hand of Russian propaganda".

Disclaimer: A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While WION takes utmost care to accurately report this developing news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos. If some media reports are to be believed, Russia is transporting equipment for its nuclear weapons programme. Multiple reports have claimed that President Vladimir Putin may be attempting to send a message to the West by conducting a nuclear test, amid the Ukraine war. The footage of the convoy, shot at an undisclosed location in central Russia and carried by several Western news outlets shows a locomotive, linked to the 12th main directorate of the Russian ministry of defence carrying upgraded armoured personnel carriers and other equipment while heading towards the front line of the battlefield. "This is actually a kit belonging to the 12th Main Directorate of the Russian MoD. The directorate is responsible for nuclear munitions, their storage, maintenance, transport, and issuance to units," Konrad Muzyka, a defence analyst specialising in Ukraine was quoted as saying by The Telegraph. NATO sends 'nuclear' warning to allies As reported by WION, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has already warned its members that Putin may have deployed Poseidon, a nuclear weapon that is also known as the "weapon of the Apocalypse". Here's all you need to know According to data exchanged earlier this year under the New START arms reduction treaty between Moscow and Washington, Russia has 5,977 nuclear warheads for its strategic forces and the US has 5,428. Each warhead is much more powerful than the bombs dropped by the US on two Japanese cities at the end of World War II, the only time atomic weapons were used. We will use anything to protect Russia: Putin The threat of Moscow using a nuclear bomb has grown exponentially ever since the Russian troops were forced to stand down as Ukraine quickly regained ground. Putin raised the stakes further by mobilisation of reservists for the war, aiming to call up at least 300,000. But the effort is proving widely unpopular, with tens of thousands fleeing Russia and fueling protests and violence that threaten to destabilize the country. Footage shows Russia's nuclear 'armageddon' convoy on the move: Report

On Monday, Chechen leader and Russian President Vladimir Putin's ally, Ramzan Kadyrov said that he would send his three teenage sons to fight for Russia in Ukraine. This comes days after his suggestion that Moscow should consider using low-yield nuclear weapons in Kyiv after Russian troops were forced out of the city of Lyman in the Donetsk region by the Ukrainian army.

The leader took to Telegram and said, “It’s time to prove themselves in a real fight, I can only welcome this desire…Soon they will go to the front line and will be on the most difficult sections of the contact line.” The statement was uploaded with a video that showed his three sons Akhmat (16), Eli (15) and Adam (14) firing missiles at a shooting range.

Kadyrov also said that they have been training for combat since “almost from their youngest years” and insisted he was “not joking.” The statement was supposedly addressed to “vain talkers who claimed my loved ones weren't taking part in the special military operation,” said the Chechen leader.

Over the weekend, the leader of the Chechnya region also opined the use of, “more drastic measures should be taken, up to the declaration of martial law in the border areas and use of low-yield nuclear weapons.”

However, on Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed his call as a “very emotional moment” and that leaders have the right to express their opinions but Russia favours a “balanced approach.”

“In our country, the use of nuclear weapons happens only on the basis of what is stated in the relevant doctrine,” said Peskov to the reporters.

On Saturday, a senior Ukrainian official indicated that Russian forces shelled a civilian evacuation convoy, killing 20 people in the country’s northeast region. The incident took place in the Kupiansy district amid the intensified bombardment following Moscow’s annexation of Ukraine’s territory.

According to reports, the governor of the Kharkiv region, Oleh Syniehubov, said that this attack on people who were trying to flee the area is “сruelty that can’t be justified.” This is reportedly the second such attack in the past two days on a humanitarian convoy by Russian forces. The first one was in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, on Friday, which killed at least 25 people. Meanwhile, Moscow has not acknowledged or commented on the attacks.

This comes after the Russian forces had retreated from much of Kharkiv after a successful Ukrainian counteroffensive last month. However, they have reportedly continued to shell the area. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the country’s army have vowed to keep fighting to free the annexed regions and other parts of the country occupied by Russian forces.

Trying to escape mobilisation, Russians pay $27,000 for seats on private planes out of country

Nine years after he exposed the scale of secret surveillance operations undertaken by the United States' National Security Agency (NSA) and sought refuge in Russia, President Vladimir Putin has finally granted Russian citizenship to whistleblower Edward Snowden.

The move comes at a time when the relationship between Moscow and Washington is at an all-time low, thanks to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Just five days back Putin had declared the first Russian public mobilisation since World War Two to support Moscow's faltering invasion of Ukraine. Now the news of Snowden's citizenship has led to humorous quips about whether the whistleblower will be drafted into the military.

"Will Snowden be drafted?" Editor-in-chief of the state-run media company RT and ardent Putin admirer Margarita Simonyan wrote in a darkly humorous tone on her Telegram channel.

Given that Snowden has no prior military experience in the Russian army, according to Snowden's attorney Anatoly Kucherena, he would not be called up for duty.
