Amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, sirens wailed across the capital city Kyiv as people were urged to take shelter, on early Friday, a day after Moscow carried out the biggest aerial assault since the conflict first began in February, said a report by Reuters. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s army claims that it managed to destroy “all” Iranian-made kamikaze drones launched by Russia overnight.

The report also noted, shortly after 2:00 am (local time) air raid sirens were sounded across the Ukrainian capital and the city government issued an alert on its Telegram messaging app channel asking residents to seek shelter. The alert lasted for a little over two hours, reported AFP.

Additionally, Olekskiy Kuleba, governor of the Kyiv region also took to the messaging app to inform that an “attack by drones” was underway. While a Reuters witness claimed that they heard several explosions and the sound of anti-aircraft fire at least 20 km south of the Ukrainian capital.

“Night attack by martyr drones. Russia once again targeted our infrastructure facilities. Air defence forces repelled drones. Previously, there are no hits. Emergency services are working at the crash site,” said Kuleba.

Subsequently, the governor also said there were no casualties and the attack had targeted infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a video address, late Thursday claimed that their air commands in central, southern, eastern and western Ukraine repelled 54 Russian missiles and 11 drones on Thursday, reported Reuters.

Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko, also said that the capital was under attack by at least seven drones out of which two were shot down “on approach” and confirmed that there were no casualties. He added that falling debris had damaged windows in two buildings in the city’s southwestern neighbourhood, reported AFP.

According to Ukrainian officials, more than 120 missiles were fired during Thursday’s assault, during which more than 18 residential buildings and 10 critical infrastructure installations were destroyed. However, in a statement on Friday, Ukraine’s army said that they managed to repel an overnight drone attack by Russia.

Meanwhile, General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces, on Friday morning, said that over the past 24 hours, Moscow has launched 85 missile strikes, 35 air strikes, and 63 strikes from multiple rocket launch systems, reported Reuters. It added, that Russian forces also shelled nearly 20 settlements in the eastern Ukrainian city, Bakhmut and more than 25 settlements in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.

Kyiv’s air force, in a statement, on social media said, “On the night of December 29-30, the enemy attacked Ukraine with Iranian-made kamikaze drones.” It added that a total of 16 drones were launched from the southeastern and northern directions out of which “all” were destroyed by the country’s air defence. The Ukrainian army also claimed Russia had launched 69 cruise missiles out of which 54 were shot down, on Thursday morning.

However, following this attack, Zelensky’s address also noted that most regions including the capital Kyiv, Odesa and Kherson were left without power and that the outages have been particularly difficult in these cities. “But this is nothing compared with what could have happened if it were not for our heroic anti-aircraft gunners and air defence,” Zelensky added. This comes as Russia has reportedly been targeting Ukraine’s energy grid which has left millions without heat or power in the middle of winter.

Russia carries out biggest aerial assault in Ukraine since Feb; Kyiv says it repelled overnight drone strike

The United States oil giant, ExxonMobil Corp, has filed a lawsuit against the European Union in a bid to block the 27-nation bloc’s new windfall tax on oil and gas companies. This comes after the European Commission proposed to levy a windfall tax on the profits of energy producers at the General Court of the EU, in Luxembourg, on Wednesday.

The windfall tax is imposed on a firm which has benefitted from something they were not directly responsible for, in this case, it could be energy firms making profits for their products, partly due to the supply chain issues as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, the company has argued that Brussels exceeded its legal authority by imposing the proposed tax and called it “counterproductive”.

The lawsuit also argues that the measure is a tax the right of which is reserved with the national governments and challenges the use of the EU Treaty’s Article 122, an emergency procedure that excludes the European Parliament, to enact the legislation. This also comes after the company as well as the oil sector has made record profits this year, due to high energy prices and soaring inflation across the world, which has renewed calls to impose additional taxes on the sector.

In October, ExxonMobil reported a quarterly profit of at least $20 billion. A month prior, the European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen announced the plan for oil, gas, and coal companies to pay what she called a “crisis contribution” on the increased profits this year. However, Exxon spokesperson Casey Norton, said that the move discourages investments and undermines investor confidence.

He added, “Whether we invest here primarily depends on how attractive and globally competitive Europe will be.” The lawsuit was first reported by Financial Times, on Wednesday, which was filed through the company’s subsidiaries in Germany and the Netherlands. In September, the EU countries passed an emergency package of legislation aimed at tackling soaring energy prices and a minimum 33 per cent tax which it referred to as the “crisis contribution”.

The relevant profits could be from fiscal years 2022 or 2023, depending on the country, said the EU. If passed, the windfall profit tax in question would cost at least $2 billion by the end of next year, said CFO Kathryn Mikells during a call with analysts, earlier this month, reported Reuters. The energy giant has also noted that they have invested $3 billion in the past decade in refinery projects in European countries.

Energy giant ExxonMobil sues European Union in a bid to block new windfall tax

Earlier this year, in November, amid the Group of 20 (G20) major economies meeting in Indonesia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked the leaders present to step and stop the Russian invasion of Kyiv.

It was then that he first mentioned his 10-point peace plan which Zelensky said would end the conflict, “justly and on the basis of the UN Charter and international law”. Since then the Ukrainian president has spoken about his plan with the United States President Joe Biden during his visit to Washington, last week.

Recently, he also sought help from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during their call, for the implementation. This was preceded by Zelensky calling upon world leaders to hold a Global Peace Summit based on the plan.

Ukraine’s 10-point peace plan:

1. Radiation and nuclear safety, focusing on restoring security around Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine, which is now Russian-occupied.

2. Food security, including protecting and ensuring Ukraine’s grain exports to the world’s poorest nations.

3. Energy security, with a focus on price restrictions on Russian energy resources, as well as aiding Ukraine with restoring its power infrastructure, half of which has been damaged by Russian attacks.

4. Release of all prisoners and deportees, including war prisoners and children deported to Russia.

5. Restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity and Russia reaffirming it according to the UN Charter, which Zelenskyy said is “not up to negotiations”.

6. Withdrawal of Russian troops and the cessation of hostilities, the restoration of Ukraine’s state borders with Russia.

7. Justice, including the establishment of a special tribunal to prosecute Russian war crimes.

8. The prevention of ecocide, and the protection of the environment, with a focus on demining and restoring water treatment facilities.

9. Prevention of an escalation of conflict and building security architecture in the Euro-Atlantic space, including guarantees for Ukraine.

10. Confirmation of the war’s end, including a document signed by the involved parties.

What does the proposal miss?

A report by The i, a British national newspaper, said that while the analysts have called the list “maximalist” and unrealistic, it also offers better scope for negotiations moving forward. Notably, while Ukraine has emphasised on “territorial integrity”, it fails to mention Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

ALSO WATCH | Gravitas: Zelensky's "peace plan" demands punishment for Russia

Furthermore, while the Ukrainian president has previously shown interest in negotiations with his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin, his officials have also reportedly called for his ouster. On December 25, Putin during his interview with state television, Rossiya 1 said, “We are ready to negotiate with everyone involved about acceptable solutions, but that is up to them - we are not the ones refusing to negotiate, they are.”

Subsequently, an advisor to the Ukrainian president, Mykhailo Podolyak took to Twitter and said, “Russia single-handedly attacked Ukraine and is killing citizens…Russia doesn't want negotiations, but tries to avoid responsibility.”

Notably, Kyiv also broke away from the tradition where both countries celebrate Christmas on January 7 as opposed to December 25, in line with the Russian Orthodox Church which follows the ancient Julian calendar.

Additionally, the Ukrainian president also called out Putin for speaking about negotiations and continuing to target and hit power stations, leaving millions without electricity and heat amidst freezing winter conditions.

Therefore, despite what the Russian president might have claimed for the second time, the evidence points to the contrary, who also in turn blamed Ukraine and its Western allies for the lack of talks, a stance which the West had rejected as Moscow's posturing as it continues to attack Kyiv.

In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, on Monday, said that Kyiv wants a peace summit within two months at the United Nations with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as mediator. He also spoke about how Russia must face the consequences for its alleged war crimes before direct talks between Kyiv and Moscow.

Furthermore, Ukraine’s foreign minister also invited other countries’ participation in the potential peace talks citing the example of Turkey’s role in the grain agreement. Meanwhile, the UN has given a cautious response and said, “As the secretary-general has said many times in the past, he can only mediate if all parties want him to mediate,” said UN spokesperson Florencia Soto Nino-Martinez, on Monday.

How has Russia reacted to Ukraine’s 10-point peace plan?

Earlier this month, Russia had rejected Zelensky’s peace proposal and said that Ukraine needs to accept new territorial “realities”, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, which also included taking four Ukrainian regions (Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson) under Moscow as its “new subjects”.

He also said that there is “no question” about Russia pulling out its troops from Ukraine by the end of this year. “They appeared as a result of referendums that took place in these territories. Without taking these new realities into account, no kind of progress is possible,” said Peskov.

Similarly, late Monday, Moscow’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, reiterated that the proposal of “demilitarisation and denazification of the territories controlled by the regime, the elimination of threats to Russia's security emanating from there, including our new lands, are well known to the enemy,”

He added, “The point is simple: Fulfil them for your own good. Otherwise, the issue will be decided by the Russian army,” as per the Russian news agency, TASS. Furthermore, while Washington has given Ukraine billions of dollars in military aid, the country has been cautious with its approach to Zelensky’s peace plan as well as the proposed summit.

Ukrainian President talks to Indian PM over the phone

Meanwhile, on Monday, the Ukrainian president and Indian PM spoke on the phone for the fourth time since the beginning of Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine, in February, earlier this year. Subsequently, Zelensky had also taken to Twitter and said that he spoke to PM Modi during which he wished for a successful G20 presidency.

Additionally, the Indian government also mentioned PM Modi’s main priorities for India's G20 Presidency which include giving a voice to the concerns of developing nations on issues like food and energy security.

While India has repeatedly been criticised by Western countries for its import of oil from Russia at a discounted price, New Delhi has defended its stance of putting its people first. Furthermore, India has also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and violence in Russia-Ukraine but has not outright condemned the conflict but maintained that the crisis is solved through dialogue and diplomacy.

Explained: What is Zelensky's 10-point peace plan which seeks world leaders’ support?

Russian Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday issued an ultimatum to Ukraine and said that "the enemy" knows Moscow's proposals for settlement and that if Kyiv fails to fulfil them for good the Russian army will take the matter into their own hands and decide the issue.

"Our proposals for the demilitarisation and denazification of the territories controlled by the regime, the elimination of threats to Russia's security emanating from there, including our new lands, are well known to the enemy," said Lavrov as per a TASS agency report.

"The point is simple: Fulfil them for your own good. Otherwise, the issue will be decided by the Russian army," he added.

This comes as Russian president Vladimir Putin on Sunday said that his country is open to talks blaming neighbour Ukraine and its allies for the lack thereof.

‘For your own good’: Russian FM Sergei Lavrov issues ultimatum to Ukraine

Delivering his Christmas message on Sunday from St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, Pope Francis called for ending the "senseless" war between Russia and Ukraine. The 86-year-old pope further warned that the ongoing war has aggravated food shortage in the world, and appealed to the leaders not to use "food as a weapon” for war.

The Catholic Church's head was addressing the faithful gathered in huge numbers in St Peter's Square, a few of them carrying Ukrainian flags, before he delivered the "Urbi et Orbi" blessing ("to the city and the world").

Pope Francis has repeatedly appealed for peace since Ukraine was invaded by Russia in February, criticising the war but trying to maintain delicate dialogue with Russia.

Speaking from the central balcony at St Peter's, the pope recalled, "Our Ukrainian brothers and sisters who are experiencing this Christmas in the dark and cold, far from their homes."

He said, "May the Lord inspire us to offer concrete gestures of solidarity to assist all those who are suffering, and may he enlighten the minds of those who have the power to silence the thunder of weapons and put an immediate end to this senseless war!"

"Tragically, we prefer to heed other counsels, dictated by worldly ways of thinking," he added, recalling "with sorrow" that "the icy winds of war continue to buffet humanity".

"Our time is experiencing a grave famine of peace also in other regions and other theatres of this third world war," Pope Francis added.

He also talked about other countries facing difficult times during Christmas, whether because of internal conflict or crisis like Yemen, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine and Haiti.

Pope France, for the first time, also appealed for "reconciliation" in Iran, which is witnessing protests led by women for the last three months.

He asked everyone celebrating Christmas to remember the people "who go hungry while huge amounts of food daily go to waste and resources are being spent on weapons".

"The war in Ukraine has further aggravated this situation, putting entire peoples at risk of famine, especially in Afghanistan and in the countries of the Horn of Africa. We know that every war causes hunger and exploits food as a weapon, hindering its distribution to people already suffering,” Pope Francis said.

"On this day, let us learn from the Prince of Peace (Jesus Christ) and, starting with those who hold political responsibilities, commit ourselves to making food solely an instrument of peace,” he added.

In Christmas message, Pope Francis appeals to end ‘senseless’ Russia-Ukraine war

Ten months into the ongoing armed conflict with Russia, Ukraine remains defiant. In a message on Saturday, the war-torn nation's President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukrainians will show the Russian aggressors that they remain unbowed despite the relentless attacks that have plunged millions into darkness, and that they will create their own Christmas magic.

On the day that marked 10 months of Moscow's launching of the war that has killed tens and thousands and displaced millions, Zelensky said, "We endured at the beginning of the war - we withstood attacks, threats, nuclear blackmail, terror, missile strikes. We will endure this winter because we know what we are fighting for."

Defiant Volodymyr Zelensky says Ukraine will not bow down, but create its own ‘Christmas miracle’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the United States Congress on Thursday (December 22) during his visit to Washington amid what Russia calls its “special military operation” in Kyiv. The speech, which was a little over 20 minutes, refers to three battles out of which two have historically been the turning point of their respective wars.

Zelensky compared the ongoing fight for the small eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, to the Battle of Saratoga which was fought during the US Revolutionary War against the British. While also comparing the ongoing conflict with Russia to World War II’s Battle of the Bulge.

Battle of Saratoga and fight for Bakhmut

“The Russian military and mercenaries have been taking Bakhmut nonstop since May. They have been taking it day and night, but Bakhmut stands,” said Zelensky had said in his speech. He added, “Just like the Battle of Saratoga, the fight for Bakhmut will change the tragic story of our war for independence and of freedom,”

Referring to the Battle of Saratoga was seen as a turning point in the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) fought by the ‘Patriots’ who wanted to gain independence from Great Britain. After over 150 years of Britain controlling the 13 colonies, once created in the 1600s it was not until the mid-1700s that they began taxing and imposing their laws on the colonies.

This led to years of tensions between the colonies and Britain that eventually culminated in a revolution and subsequent war. On July 4, 1776, after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the colonies officially declared themselves free from the British.

However, at the beginning of the war, Patriots faced many defeats against the strongest militaries in the world at the time with trained soldiers and resources. But the two-part battle was seen as a turning point of the war in favour of the colonists, with support from countries like France. According to the archives, the first one was fought on September 19 and the second on October 7.

Meanwhile, in present-day Ukraine, the battle for Bakhmut has been going on for nearly five months with incessant bombing and civilians fleeing the city which was once reportedly populated with at least 70,000 people has been reduced to nearly 10,000. On the other hand, citing Konrad Muzyka, a Polish military analyst, Reuters reported that even if Russia manages to win, it will be at a great cost.

Furthermore, experts say, there is also a fear that the Kremlin’s forces will use this city as a stepping stone to capturing two bigger cities, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. Additionally, if Ukraine loses then it will be cut off from its access to its road and rail supply line intersection in Bakhmut. However, Muzyka says that its strategic value in Russia has also been lessened since August due to Ukraine’s heavy fortification around the region.

“The fighting for Bakhmut is not senseless, but strategically unsound (for Russia) given weak offensive potential and no prospect of breakthrough even if the city is captured,” said Michael Kofman, an expert on the Russian military at a US-based think tank. However, Muzyka says that the battle for this region has become a “battle of attrition”.

Furthermore, the report citing British intelligence says that Bakhmut’s capture has become “primarily a symbolic, political objective” for Moscow, something that could lift morale. While for Ukraine, the experts said this region is partly about constant support from its allies in the West. This comes after Kyiv’s forces have achieved a string of successes in pushing back against Russia.

According to Kofman, “At this stage, Ukraine is the victim of its own recent success, and suffers from heightened expectations of sustained momentum.” Furthermore, the report suggests that Ukraine’s recent success and fewer defeats could be perceived by the West as a stalemate which would then be less willing to extend support to Ukraine as the western countries continue to deal with economic pressures, as a result of this conflict.

Russia-Ukraine conflict and World War II’s Battle of the Bugle

“The Russian tactic is primitive. They burn down and destroy everything they see. They sent thugs to the frontlines. They sent convicts to the war...They threw everything against us – similar to the other tyranny, which in the Battle of the Bulge threw everything it had against the free world,” said the Ukrainian president in his speech.

He added, “Just like the brave American soldiers, which held their lines and fought back Hitler’s forces during the Christmas of 1944, brave Ukrainian soldiers are doing the same to Putin’s forces this Christmas. Ukraine holds its lines and will never surrender!”

The Ukrainian president is referring to the Battle of the Bulge fought between, December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945, which marked the final major counteroffensive by the German forces against the Allied Powers. The battle witnessed heavy fighting and casualties which has also been attributed to the poor weather in the region, however, the Allies prevailed.

Earlier this month, as the conflict continued well into 10 months, Russia ruled out the possibility of a “Christmas ceasefire” and also rejected Ukraine’s calls for the withdrawal of troops with Christmas marking the end of the conflict.

On December 14, in response to questions regarding the possibility of a “Christmas ceasefire” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, “No, no such offers have been received from anybody. This topic is not on the agenda.”

Furthermore, while Zelensky wants Russia to start pulling back by Christmas, Moscow wants Ukraine to accept the loss of territory to Russia before any progress can be made. Therefore, with the raging war in eastern and southern Ukraine and little movement on either side as well as no ongoing little possibility of talks, the conflict might continue throughout the holiday season.

Russian propaganda videos promise money, respect and ‘manly’ life to lure recruits in army

The United States is in the midst of finalising plans to send the Patriot missile defence system to Ukraine, said media reports citing officials, while a formal announcement is awaited. The ground-based air defence system is something Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sought from its western allies for some time now.

While it is considered one of the most advanced air defence systems by the US, there are reports citing experts saying that it might not be effective enough for the conflict in Ukraine. This comes as Kyiv is facing massive blackouts affecting millions and according to the United Nations half of the country’s energy infrastructure has been attacked and destroyed reportedly by Russian missiles and drones.

What is the Patriot missile system?

The MIM-104 Patriot is the US army’s top-tier surface-to-air guided missile system which is manufactured by the Virginia-based Raytheon Technologies. The defence system is known for targeting ballistic and cruise missiles as well as manned and unmanned aircraft that was first deployed in the 1980s.

A typical Patriot battery includes eight launchers which can hold up to four missile interceptors each, it is also equipped with ground radar to detect and track its target, computers, power generating equipment, and a control station. Therefore, unlike other smaller air defence systems, the Patriot requires at least 90 personnel to properly operate it, the training for which takes months.

However, Washington has previously trained Ukrainian troops on how to operate their other complex missile systems which include High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMRAS). Additionally, the US has also previously sent mid-range defensive National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) to Ukraine.

The US Army said that it currently has 16 Patriot battalions. Notably, the Patriot batteries are regularly deployed across the world, they are currently being operated in or bought by at least 16 countries, including, Taiwan, Japan, Israel, South Korea, Qatar, and so on, reported the Associated Press.

The US has also previously sent Patriot missile batteries to NATO allies like Poland as well as the middle eastern nations of Saudi Arabia and Iraq to counter threats by Iran and its proxies. The constantly upgraded air defence system costs at least four million dollars per round while the launchers cost at least $10 million each, said a report by the think tank, Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), earlier this year.

What do we know about the proposed transfer so far?

Three officials told CNN that the plan still needs approval from Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin before being sent to President Joe Biden for the final signature. Reuters, citing sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that an official announcement could come as early as Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon during a press briefing declined to comment on the reports. While nothing is heard from the Ukrainian officials about the reports either. However, Kyiv recently held a high-level meeting with the US, said Zelensky’s office to Reuters.

The media reports citing officials also said that once approved the missile defence system will be sent in a matter of days and the Ukrainian army personnel will be trained to use them at a US Army base in Grafenwoehr, Germany.

This comes as Kyiv has sought these missiles for months now but there have been several obstacles including logistical challenges of delivering the air defence system as well as operating it, reported CNN citing an official.

In addition to the months of training and needing at least more than a dozen personnel to operate the air defence system the Biden administration is also concerned that this move will provoke Russia while there is also the risk that one of their missiles could enter Moscow.

ALSO WATCH | Russia-Ukraine war: Fresh missile attacks in Southeast Ukraine

This would further escalate the conflict, reported AP. Notably, the US has also limited HIMRAS’ launchers to targets inside Ukraine. However, noting the intensifying Russian missile attack, the official said that despite the issues, “the reality of what is going on the ground” has led the Biden administration to make this decision, the report added.

How effective would Patriot’s deployment be in Ukraine?

The official who spoke on the condition of anonymity also said that while one Patriot battery has a long firing range it only covers a limited broad area and that the defence system which is usually deployed as a battalion (four batteries) will not be the case for Ukraine which will only be receiving one. Therefore, it will protect smaller areas like a military base but not large cities like Kyiv.

Whereas, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who had led the Ukraine policy during the former US president Donald Trump’s administration, Alexander Vindman, told Reuters that the system is “very, very significant.” He added, the Patriot missile system will be “quite capable” of dealing with challenges that Russia poses in Ukraine, particularly if Moscow deploys its short-range ballistic missiles.

Another former senior military official with the knowledge system said that while it will send a strong message and will be effective against short-range ballistic missiles, one battery will not be a game changer for the conflict. Echoing a similar sentiment, an official at the CSIS, Tom Karako told the AP that the Patriot system can help defend Ukraine against Iran-supplied ballistic missiles.

He added that while the air defence system could also intercept a tactical nuclear device if Russian President Vladimir Putin were to move forward with his veiled threats of using them made earlier, it would depend on how it is delivered. Furthermore, the Patriot is not known for its performance against small drones.

In 2017, when Houthis attacked the US Patriot system in Saudi Arabia with Qasef kamikaze drones they targeted the air defence system’s radar which Karako says is a powerful one and better at identifying targets than the Ukrainian S-300 system. However, the attack left the system’s radar out of order long enough for the Houthis to fire their long-range missiles which couldn’t be intercepted in time.

The incident was reportedly caught on video which has since raised many questions about the Patriot’s success rate. This comes as Russia has reportedly been using Iran-made kamikaze drones to attack critical infrastructure in Ukraine, including power plants which have left millions of homes across the country in darkness.

Russia’s response to the potential deal

While the deal has not even been finalised, the Kremlin has already warned the US that the Patriot air defence system would be a legitimate target for Russian strikes against Ukraine. Russian spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov said that the missile defence system would “definitely” be a target, but later also said that he did not want to comment on unconfirmed media reports.

German chancellor Scholz says 'Russia has stopped threatening to use nuclear weapons'

German chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday said that it would be a grave mistake to completely stop talking to Russia and its President Vladimir Putin.

Scholz's remarks come just two days after he held a telephone conversation with Putin. During their conversation on Friday (December 2), the chancellor reportedly pressed the Russian leader to seek a diplomatic end to the war in Ukraine.

Referring to the call, Scholz as per Reuters said "I have spoken to him (Putin) repeatedly since then because I am firmly convinced that it is a grave mistake if, despite all the differences, and this is, after all, a small word for huge differences, we no longer talk to each other at all."

He added that "it is also important that the French president and I, as representatives of the G7 countries, as two NATO countries, keep seeking dialogue again. However, we do so without any illusions because they are always long conversations and because all the public statements we hear to justify this war are repeated there."

In a statement released after the one-hour call, Scholz's spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit said that the chancellor condemned Russian airstrikes on civilian infrastructure "and stressed Germany's determination to support Ukraine in ensuring the defence capability against Russian aggression".

However, as per AFP Putin accused the West of pursuing "destructive policies" and also warned that the attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure are "inevitable", adding that thanks to the "political and financial support" from its western allies, " Kyiv completely rejects the idea of any negotiations".

German chancellor Scholz says completely stopping talks with Putin 'would be a grave mistake'

Russia has denounced the West's price cap on its oil and said it "will not accept" it. The Kremlin also reportedly said that it was analysing how to respond.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov as per a report by the Russian news agency TASS said that his country has made preparations for the price cap that goes into effect on Monday (December 5th).

AFP reports that this price cap agreed by the EU, G7 and Australia will go into effect on Monday alongside an EU embargo on maritime deliveries of Russian crude oil. Under the cap, Russia can only continue delivery of oil sold at $60 per barrel or less.

Russia has insisted that it will stop oil supplies to nations that have participated in the price cap. Mikhail Ulyanov, Moscow's ambassador to international organisations in Vienna, also confirmed this stance in social media posts.

Moscow says will not accept western price cap on its crude, claims 'Russian oil will continue to be in demand'

The United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA), on Saturday, said that they have arrested three people including a “wealthy Russian businessman” on suspicion of money laundering. This comes amid the country’s crackdown on potential criminal activity by oligarchs. Meanwhile, Moscow’s embassy in London has reportedly demanded information on the arrests.

According to the NCA, more than 50 officers from its Combatting Kleptocracy Cell (CKC) were involved in the operation and arrested three men, from their “multi-million-pound residence” in London, on Thursday. The 58-year-old, “wealthy Russian businessman” has been arrested on suspicion of money laundering, conspiracy to commit perjury, and defrauding the Home Office.

Meanwhile, a 35-year-old man was arrested for obstructing an officer as he was about to leave with a bag containing large sums of money as well as on suspicion of money laundering. The third suspect, a 39-year-old who is said to be the ex-boyfriend of the businessman's current partner, was detained at the residence on similar charges. However, the three individuals, whose details remain undisclosed by the NCA, are out on bail.

The NCA also recovered a number of digital devices as well as a significant amount of cash after they searched the property, said the crime agency. According to the NCA Director General, Graeme Biggar, the CKC, established earlier this year, is having “significant success” in its investigations of potential crimes by oligarchs including those who are supporting, enabling and linked to the Russian government.

“We will continue to use all the powers and tactics available to us to disrupt this threat,” said Biggar, in a statement. The NCA said they have conducted nearly 100 such “disruptions”, a term used to describe an action of removing or reducing a criminal threat, against Russian President Vladimir Putin-linked elites and their enablers.

The action taken by the NCA also included account freezing orders (AFOs) over accounts held by people closely linked to sanctioned Russians, said Britain’s crime agency. Notably, the UK has sanctioned over 1,000 people and more than 120 entities, in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Allegations of sexual violence during this war started spilling over the past few months.

Last week, Wayne Jordash, an international criminal lawyer assisting Kyiv's war crimes investigations, stated there was proof Russian leadership was aware of sexual abuse committed by military forces in Ukraine, "and in some cases, (were) encouraging it or even ordering it."

According to an UN-supported report released in October, the victims of such abuse in Ukraine ranged in the age from four to over 80, and in some cases, family members were made to witness the crime.

Russian wives encouraging their husbands to rape Ukrainian women, alleges first lady Olena Zelenska

Amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, NATO reaffirmed its commitment to include Ukraine in the 30-member nation alliance, on Tuesday, at the foreign ministers’ meeting in Romania. The potential inclusion of Kyiv in the world’s largest security alliance is one of the reasons that prompted Russia’s invasion of the country earlier this year, said experts.

Prior to the NATO meeting in Bucharest, the alliance’s Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said, “NATO’s door is open.” Furthermore, NATO asserted that Russia cannot stop the alliance’s expansion as more countries continue to join.

Earlier this year, North Macedonia and Montenegro became a part of NATO. Meanwhile, Finland and Sweden have also applied to become a part of the alliance in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine amid concerns that they might be targeted by Moscow as well.

Stoltenberg said, “Russia does not have a veto” on countries joining NATO. He added, “We stand by that, too, on membership for Ukraine.” However, Kyiv on September 30 applied for an “accelerated accession” to NATO, but given the long process, it might not become a member anytime soon.

“I think what he’s afraid of is democracy and freedom, and that’s the main challenge for him,” said Stoltenberg referring to the Russian president. He added that Putin cannot stop sovereign nations from making “sovereign decisions” that are not a threat to Russia. Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin had also cited Ukraine’s ambitious bid to join the security alliance as a threat to Moscow’s security.

Meanwhile, United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken was drumming up support for Ukraine as Russia reportedly continues to target Kyiv's energy infrastructure leaving millions to witness the harsh winter. “Russia is using brutal missile and drone attacks to leave Ukraine cold and dark this winter. President Putin is trying to weaponise winter, to force Ukrainians to freeze or flee,” said Stoltenberg.

US and allies to announce price cap on Russian oil; move will help cut Moscow's revenues for its war machine

A bipartisan group of 16 US senators in a letter have asked the joe Biden administration to carefully reconsider giving Ukraine the lethal Gray Eagle drones to fight Russia.

Several senators, including Republican Joni Ernst and Democrat Joe Manchin, who are both members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, have expressed alarm at US opposition to the proposal and stated that providing the armable drone "demands careful reconsideration."

Reuters reports that the group has asked Pentagon to explain why Ukraine's request for the drones has so far been rejected. Ukraine has made multiple appeals for the said drones. Here's all you need to know:

Why are these drones special?

The MQ-1C Gray Eagle drone as per Reuters has an operational ceiling of 29,000 feet. This capability can go a long way in helping Ukraine in its defence and would "represent a great technological leap" for the country.

Does Ukraine only want these particular drones?

No, as Russia increasingly uses kamikaze drones and targets civilian infrastructure, Ukraine has made several requests for the United States to give it sophisticated drones. Its most recent request was for anti-drone missiles.

Why is the US hesitant to grant Ukraine's request?

While the Pentagon hasn't publicly stated its position, it is believed that the denial was motivated by worries that the drones could intensify the conflict and the belief that they are not necessary for Ukraine's military effort. Additionally, there are concerns that drones might be shot down.

The senators as per a Wall Street Journal report have given Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin until November 30 to respond to their questions. They want to know why the Pentagon considered the drone, produced by General Atomics, was inappropriate for the conflict in Ukraine; whether US worries about technology transfer could be alleviated; and whether the Pentagon feared that launching the drone would further enrage Russia.

With half of Ukraine's energy infrastructure damaged by Russian attacks, a major Ukrainian energy provider on Monday said that citizens will most likely have to live with blackouts at least till the end of March next year.

Workers are scrambling to finish repairs before the winter cold sets in, according to Sergey Kovalenko, chairman of YASNO, a significant private energy provider for Kyiv.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Kovalenko stated, "I would like everyone to understand: Ukrainians will most likely live with blackouts until at least the end of March."

According to a Reuters story citing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as winter sets in and temperatures drop below freezing, millions of people are left without access to water and energy.

The president urged the nation's citizens to conserve energy, asking them to be "mindful and redistribute their consumption throughout the day".

More than 950,000 customers were disconnected as a result of new restrictions the grid operator placed on the distribution of electricity on Monday, said Kovalenko.

Even as regions across Ukraine experience regular blackouts, grid operator Ukrenergo on Tuesday announced that the country will see additional planned shutdowns.

Russian state-run TASS news agency reported late last week, that as per Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin Kyiv's refusal to negotiate is the cause of the blackouts and Russia's attacks on energy infrastructure.

Russia-Ukraine War | Bad weather has reduced number of Russian attacks, but shelling remains high: Zelensky

On Monday, at least 45 countries and institutions will convene in France’s city of Paris for the international aid conference during which they may pledge millions of euros of aid to Moldova. The country is currently suffering from rising food and energy prices, massive blackouts as well as an influx of refugees amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The country of nearly 2.5 million people has already taken thousands of refugees, reportedly even more per head than any other country. Furthermore, the former Soviet republic largely depends on Russia’s energy supplies and is facing increasing difficulties ahead of the winter season as Moscow is cutting at least 40 per cent of its natural gas supplies to Moldova.

According to the French Foreign Ministry, the conference will be aimed at “concrete and immediate assistance” for Moldova which is currently facing an “unprecedented energy crisis” posing a risk of a “humanitarian crisis” for the citizens. The Moldovan President, Maia Sandu, will also reportedly meet French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday.

“Moldova is directly impacted because it's dependent on Russian energy supplies and is a country which has a part of its territory controlled by Russian soldiers so it's especially vulnerable,” said the French diplomat during a press briefing. Earlier this month, the European Union pledged at least 250 million euros (nearly $260 million) following Moscow’s reduction of natural gas supply.

Aid sought to ease impact of Russia-Ukraine conflict on crisis-hit Moldova in Paris

The expulsion of more than 400 suspected Russian spies across Europe was a “significant strategic blow” to Moscow, a top British intelligence official said on Wednesday.

Ken McCallum, the director general of the country’s security services (MI5), made the remarks at the annual update on the threats to the UK.

The spy chief also said that Britain faces major security threats from Russia, China and Iran.

The MI5 chief said that his agency has blocked more than 100 attempts by the Kremlin to send suspected spies since the nerve agent poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, UK in 2018.

Reportedly, this incident prompted a wave of diplomatic expulsions.

Recently, a significant number of Russian officials had been expelled from across the world including over 600 from Europe, at least 400 of whom were suspected to be spies.

“In the UK’s case, since our removal for 23 Russian spies posing as diplomats, we have refused on national security grounds over 100 diplomatic visa applications”, said McCallum at the MI5 headquarters in London.

He added, “that the UK must be ready for Russian aggression for years to come.”

The recent expulsions have also “struck the most significant strategic blow against the Russian Intelligence Services in recent European history.

And together with coordinated waves of sanctions, the scale has taken (Russian President Vladimir) Putin by surprise.”

The UK has also been one of the strongest supporters of Ukraine among other western countries in light of the ongoing Russian invasion, and it was important especially when Moscow made “silly claims” about Britain's blowing up the Nord Stream gas pipelines, said the MI5 chief.

McCallum also went on to address the growing threat from Iran as the state that “most frequently crosses into terrorism.”

He spoke about how the country’s “aggressive intelligence services” made at least 10 attempts to “kidnap or even kill British or UK-based individuals perceived as enemies of the regime,” since the beginning of this year alone.

This comes a week after Iran’s deputy ambassador was summoned by the UK’s Foreign Office over allegations that two London-based journalists were facing death threats from state-backed agents for their reporting on the protests in Tehran.

The British police had reportedly warned the two journalists about “an imminent, credible and significant risk to their lives and those of their families.”

Addressing China, McCallum said that “the activities of the Chinese Communist Party pose the most game-changing strategic challenge to the UK” and said that the country is “playing the long game in cultivating contacts to manipulate opinion” in Beijing’s favour. The contacts he is referring to are not just prominent lawmakers across the country’s political landscape but also local councillors and their goal is to gradually build “a debt of obligation,” said the MI5 chief.

McCallum also accused Beijing of monitoring and intimidating the Chinese nationals in the UK, who is also “forcibly repatriating” them to harassment and assault. He believes that these activities may grow with time, especially since Chinese President Xi Jinping has consolidated power on an “indefinite basis.”

This comes after UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called China a “systemic challenge” to the country’s values and interests, and “represents the biggest state-based threat to our economic security.”

“We are facing adversaries who have massive scale and are not squeamish about the tactics they deploy,” he said while talking about the risk of Russia, China and Iran helping each other to amplify their strengths, said McCallum.

Meanwhile, the threat that terrorism poses still remained at the forefront with the McCallum saying that they had disrupted at least 37 “late stage” attack plots since 2017, eight of them since last June. “We are seeing growing numbers of right-wing extremist influencers, operating globally, fuel grievances and amplify conspiracy theories,” said the MI5 chief.

UK: MI5 chief says expulsion of Russian spies from Europe is a ‘significant strategic blow’ to Moscow

Amid pressure from all quarters to end the conflict with Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking at the G20 summit on Tuesday said Kyiv's conditions for restarting talks with Moscow were 'unrealistic'.

The retaking of Kherson from Russian troops was hailed as an "amazing triumph" for Ukraine on Saturday by the White House. Talking to reporters while on his way to the ASEAN summit in Cambodia, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said, "It does look as though the Ukrainians have just won an extraordinary victory where the one regional capital that Russia had seized in this war is now back under the Ukrainian flag -- and that is quite a remarkable thing."

As per AFP, Sullivan also said that the longer-term threat posed by Russia to other southern Ukrainian cities, such as Odesa, will be lessened, and that the Russian pullback will have broader strategic implications.

"It's a big moment and it's due to the incredible tenacity and skill of the Ukrainians, backed by the relentless and united support of the United States and our allies," said Sullivan.

When asked about rumours that the Biden administration has begun pressuring President Volodymyr Zelensky to consider negotiations with Moscow, Sullivan said that it is Russia, not Ukraine, that must determine whether or not to participate in negotiations.

"This whole notion, I think, in the Western press of 'when's Ukraine going to negotiate?' misses the underlying fundamentals," Sullivan said, adding, "Ultimately, at a 30,000-foot level, Ukraine is the party of peace in this conflict and Russia is the party of war. Russia invaded Ukraine. If Russia chooses to stop fighting in Ukraine and left, it would be the end of the war. If Ukraine chooses to stop fighting and give up, it would be the end of Ukraine."
