<p>The partnership, in the form of a memorandum of understanding, was signed virtually earlier this week by the secretary, Tom Vilsack, and Ukraine’s minister of agriculture. Vilsack said the agreement was focused on providing technical assistance to Ukraine, which before the war was the world’s fourth-largest exporter of grain and seeds, and helping the country rebuild its agriculture industry after the war ends.</p>

<p>Vilsack said the United States would take several other steps to address the crisis, including incentives to growers to expand their production and, accordingly, increase the amount of grain available for food aid.</p>

<p>The war in Ukraine has caused global food and energy prices to soar and risks creating grain supply shortages in countries in the Middle East, Asia and Africa that depend heavily on imported wheat and grain from Ukraine. The United Nations has warned that a global food crisis, already in the making because of climate change and the pandemic’s disruption of supply chains, would place hundreds of thousands of people at risk of starvation.</p>

<p>A global effort is underway to release some 25 million tons of Ukrainian grain that are trapped by Russia’s blockade of the country. The U.N. is also negotiating a deal in which Russia would allow transport of Ukrainian grain from ports in the Black Sea in exchange for exports of Russian fertilizers to the world market without the threat of sanctions.</p>

But a breakthrough would require ports in Ukraine to be de-mined and ships to be escorted through safe corridors to avoid mines in the Black Sea. A UN&nbsp;spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, said Thursday that there was no update on negotiations.</p>

<p>Vilsack said that while negotiations for sea transportation continued, a parallel track was necessary to move and store grain overland through Romania and Poland by railway. This would reduce the risk of grain being stolen and would free up storage for Ukrainian farmers who will soon need to harvest winter crops, he said.</p>

<p>One Russian missile that was probably headed for Kyiv flew "critically low" over a major nuclear power plant in the southern Mykolaiv region, state-run nuclear power operator Energoatom said on Telegram.</p>

<p>Russia's Defence Ministry said its missiles had destroyed T-72 tanks and armoured vehicles supplied to Ukraine by eastern European countries that were housed in a rail car repair facility in Kyiv.</p>

<p>Oleksandr Kamyshin, head of the Ukrainian railway, confirmed that four missiles had smashed into the Darnytsia rail car repair facility in eastern Kyiv, but denied there had been any military hardware at the site.</p>

<p>"Their (Russia's) target is the economy and the civilian population," he said.</p>

<p>The sprawling railway system has served as a vital lifeline as Russia's Feb. 24 invasion has smashed the Ukrainian economy and severed export routes via the Black Sea.</p>

<p>The missiles were the first to hit the capital since late April when a Radio Liberty producer was killed in a Russian missile strike that hit the building she lived in.</p>

<p>"According to preliminary data, the (Russians) launched missiles from Tu-95 aircraft from the Caspian Sea," the Ukrainian air force said in a statement.</p>

<p>Presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak called on the West to impose more sanctions on Russia to punish it for the strikes and to supply more weapons to Ukraine.</p>

<p>"The Kremlin resorts to new insidious attacks. Today’s missile strikes at Kyiv have only one goal - kill as many as possible," he wrote in a tweet.</p>

<p>The mayor of the historic town of Brovary, around 20 km (12 miles) from Kyiv's centre, urged people to remain inside their homes as there had been reports of a sooty smell coming from the smoke.</p>

<p>Despite continuing Russian offensives in Ukraine and the widespread destruction, life in Kyiv has been relatively attack-free in recent weeks, after Moscow turned the focus of its invasion to the east and south.</p>

<p>Air raid sirens regularly disrupt life in Kyiv, but there have been no major strikes on the city in several weeks.</p>

<p>Fedir Shandor has become a sort of an internet celebrity ever since his photo of giving lessons online while being deployed on the battlefield went viral.</p>

<p>Like many civilians, Shandor joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion that began on February 24.</p>

<p>Before that, he used to run a tourism company and teach at a university in western Uzhhorod city of Ukraine.</p>

<p>But all that changed when Russia’s Vladimir Putin started attacking its neighbouring country in a bid to overthrow the Volodymyr Zelensky regime.</p>

<p>However, as a professor, he hasn’t stopped giving lectures even in the trenches. He made an arrangement with his commanding officers and comrades to have a suitable duty roster to be able to hold lectures with his students.</p>

<p>The photo that had become was taken by fellow soldier Viktor Shchaedi. It purportedly shows the professor in army fatigues instructing students via video chat from inside a trench protected by sandbags, according to the New York Post.</p>

<p>The man can be seen with his helmet on and an AK-103 rifle at his side&nbsp;as he holds his phone in a bandaged hand.</p>

<p>“We are fighting for an educated nation.&nbsp;If I did not give lectures, it would be a sin,” Shandor said in a statement issued by Uzhhorod National University, where he teaches classes in tourism and hospitality.</p>

<p>“If there are sounds of shelling somewhere in the background, they do not affect the lecture,” Shandor said in the university statement.</p>

<p>It has been 70 days since he enlisted into the army and hasn’t missed a single class since then.</p>

<p>During that time, he said, he’s held classes at 8 am every Monday and Tuesday.</p>

<p>“I did not miss a single one,” he said.</p>

<p>“I always prefer morning classes: I read, and then you have time for another job,” he added.</p>

<p>As Russian bombardments devastated their hometown of Mariupol, Yevgen and Tetiana decided they had only one way to&nbsp;escape&nbsp;with their four&nbsp;children:&nbsp;on&nbsp;foot.</p>

<p>Nervously, they led the&nbsp;children&nbsp;out of their building. It was the first time they had all left together since the Russian invasion began&nbsp;on&nbsp;February 24.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Around them they found a terrifying scene of utter destruction.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"When the kids&nbsp;saw, they walked in silence," Yevgen said.</p>

<p>"I don't know what was going&nbsp;on&nbsp;in their heads. Maybe they too couldn't believe that our city no longer existed."</p>

<p><strong>Life underground&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>The adults already had a sense of what awaited them. They had snuck out of the house to take food and water from bombed out shops and been confronted by the corpses littering the streets.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It seemed less frightening to die in a bombing raid than of hunger," said Tetiana.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Sleeping&nbsp;on&nbsp;the concrete was not great," recalled the ponytailed girl. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>She insisted bravely that when the bombs fell "we weren't so scared".</p>

<p>"The building was shaking a lot and there was a lot of dust," she said. "It was not pleasant to breathe."</p>

<p>Finally leaving the basement and the city was "hard", said Anna.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We had to carry our bags and they were heavy," she told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>That was&nbsp;on&nbsp;the first day, at least, before her dad discovered what the&nbsp;family&nbsp;christened "the golden cart."&nbsp;</p>

<p>In reality, it was a rusted and creaking three-wheeled trolley -- but it made the walk much easier.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"My wife pushed our youngest girl&nbsp;on&nbsp;her tricycle. And I pushed the cart, often with one of the&nbsp;children&nbsp;perched&nbsp;on&nbsp;the bags," Yevgen said. "The other two walked beside me."</p>

<p>In five days and four nights of travel, the&nbsp;family&nbsp;passed through numerous Russian checkpoints, telling the soldiers that they were heading to their relatives.</p>

<p>"They didn't treat us as enemies, they tried to help," Yevgen said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"But every time they asked us: 'Where are you from? From Mariupol? But why are you going in this direction, why aren't you going to Russia?'"</p>

<p>At night, the&nbsp;family&nbsp;slept in the homes of local people who opened their doors along the route and were well fed.</p>

<p>During the day, they moved&nbsp;on, against all odds.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Eventually they got lucky and came across Dmytro Zhirnikov, who was driving through Polohy, a Russian-occupied town located about 100 kilometres from Zaporizhzhia.</p>

<p>"I&nbsp;saw&nbsp;this&nbsp;family&nbsp;pushing a cart&nbsp;on&nbsp;the side of the road," said Zhirnikov, who regularly travels Zaporizhzhia to sell the vegetables his&nbsp;family&nbsp;produces.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I stopped and told them to put their things in my trailer."</p>

<p>After 125 kilometres&nbsp;on&nbsp;foot, Tetiana, Yevgen, and their little ones finished their journey in his battered van.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zhirnikov remembered the elation they felt when they emerged from Russian-controlled territory and&nbsp;saw&nbsp;Ukrainian soldiers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"When we passed the first checkpoint, everyone started crying," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We had just one goal: that our&nbsp;children&nbsp;could live in&nbsp;Ukraine. They are Ukrainians, we can't imagine that they could live in another country," Tetiana insisted.</p>

<p>On&nbsp;Friday, the&nbsp;family&nbsp;crammed themselves and their meagre possessions into a crowded train heading for the western city of Lviv.</p>

<p>They then plan to move to Ivano-Frankivsk, another large city in western&nbsp;Ukraine, to try to rebuild a normal life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Their daughter Anna described her own simple wishes after escaping the hell of Mariupol.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the latest British media report, the sister of Pinner suggested that his family has been considering a prisoner swap.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by Daily Mail, the 43-year-old Cassandra Pinner said, "We have been made aware that Shaun is in another video asking for a prisoner exchange. A prisoner exchange is a move that is being considered, not necessarily with Viktor Medvedchuk, but it's something being discussed."&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, it was not clear whether the men had been forced to speak in the videos and when and where the video was actually made.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The&nbsp;WHO&nbsp;said Tuesday it was struggling to deliver two&nbsp;generators&nbsp;to&nbsp;hospitals&nbsp;in the besieged Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, fearing the worst for its hard-hit health system.</p>

<p>The World Health Organization said it was trying to pre-position supplies closer to the frontlines to speed up delivery if a window opens.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The&nbsp;WHO&nbsp;is hoping to deliver 15&nbsp;generators&nbsp;to&nbsp;hospitals&nbsp;across&nbsp;Ukraine, from a base in the western city of Lviv.</p>

<p>Two more were for Mariupol, also in the east,&nbsp;WHO&nbsp;Europe spokesman Bhanu Bhatnagar told reporters in Geneva via videolink from Lviv.</p>

<p>"We will only move the&nbsp;generators&nbsp;to their final destinations when we can ensure the safety of our personnel and the precious cargo they are transporting," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The&nbsp;generators&nbsp;will help meet the minimum energy needs of medical and surgical units of referral&nbsp;hospitals, where power supply is limited or non-existent".</p>

<p>Mariupol has become a symbol of&nbsp;Ukraine's fierce resistance since Russia invaded on February 24.</p>

<p>Russia on Tuesday called on Ukrainian forces to lay down arms "immediately" in the city.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We don't have access to Mariupol at this time but we will position everything so that the minute we can get access, we are able to get the supplies in," Bhatnagar said.</p>

<p>"We fear the worst for the health system in Mariupol."</p>

<p>The UN's World Food Programme pleaded for unimpeded humanitarian access to people trapped in encircled areas of&nbsp;Ukraine.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In Mariupol alone, more than 100,000 people are unable to leave and "are in dire need of food, water and other essential supplies," Jakob Kern, the WFP's emergency coordinator in&nbsp;Ukraine, told reporters in Geneva via videolink from Lviv.</p>

<p>"In such circumstances, any illness that can usually be treated with medicine becomes a life-threatening situation."</p>

<p>The WFP estimates that some six million people in&nbsp;Ukraine&nbsp;will need food and cash assistance.</p>

<p>Since the Russian invasion, the&nbsp;WHO&nbsp;has verified 147 attacks on healthcare sites in&nbsp;Ukraine, in which at least&nbsp;73 people have died and 52 have been injured.</p>

<p>In March, the French fashion house announced that they are closing their stories in Russia in order to comply with the sanctions imposed by European Union and the West.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a "special military" operation in Ukraine, leading to a deadly invasion, Western countries slapped Moscow with sanctions to cripple the economy and isolate the country. Chanel was among other brands to pull out from or stop doing business in Russia.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A report by The New York Times reported an incident related to a popular Russian TV presenter Marina Ermoshkina. The report mentioned that she learned that a Chanel store in Dubai, UAE had refused to sell a bag to a Russian customer. They reportedly asked the customer to sign papers, promising that she would not wear the bag in Russia.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 28-year-old Ermoshkina, who has more than 300,000 followers on Instagram, posted a video of herself cutting a Chanel bag using a pair of gardening scissors. As quoted by the media outlet, she said, "This is Russophobia. This is the purest form of discrimination."&nbsp;</p>

<p>She had even urged other Russian influencers to cut up their Chanel handbags to protest the luxury brand's decision to cut off sales to Russia. Soon after that, other influencers joined her.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Russian model Victoria Bonya, who has 9.3 million followers on Instagram, also did the same thing. In the video, Bonya said, "If Chanel House does not respect its clients, why do we have to respect Chanel House?"&nbsp;</p>

Angry Russian social media influencers are cutting up their super expensive handbags of luxury brand Chanel with scissors to protest "Russophobia." In March, the French fashion house announced that they are closing their stories in Russia in order to comply with the sanctions imposed by European Union and the West. After Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a "special military" operation in Ukraine, leading to a deadly invasion, Western countries slapped Moscow with sanctions to cripple the economy and isolate the country. Chanel was among other brands to pull out from or stop doing business in Russia. A report by The New York Times reported an incident related to a popular Russian TV presenter Marina Ermoshkina. The report mentioned that she learned that a Chanel store in Dubai, UAE had refused to sell a bag to a Russian customer. They reportedly asked the customer to sign papers, promising that she would not wear the bag in Russia. The 28-year-old Ermoshkina, who has more than 300,000 followers on Instagram, posted a video of herself cutting a Chanel bag using a pair of gardening scissors. As quoted by the media outlet, she said, "This is Russophobia. This is the purest form of discrimination." She had even urged other Russian influencers to cut up their Chanel handbags to protest the luxury brand's decision to cut off sales to Russia. Soon after that, other influencers joined her. Russian model Victoria Bonya, who has 9.3 million followers on Instagram, also did the same thing. In the video, Bonya said, "If Chanel House does not respect its clients, why do we have to respect Chanel House?" I am very glad that with my challenge I drew your attention to the problem of Russophobia. This was done in order not only to express the position of the Russians, but, of course, to help people. "I still have Chanel brand items. Of course, I won't spoil them anymore. This was done once to cause a public outcry. I want to sell all the Chanel items that I have and donate the proceeds to help the victims in Donbas," she added.
