Rishi Sunak, the British prime minister, has proposed a peculiar way to create a 'smoke-free' generation. He wants to raise England's legal age for buying cigarettes by one year, every year. However, critics of the plan say it would just create a "black market."

Defending his plan, Sunak said in an interview with Radio 4: "Smoking is unequivocally the single biggest preventable cause of death, disability and illness."

<h2>One year, every year</h2>

As per Sunak, raising the legal age to purchase a cigarette by one year every year would mean a "14-year-old today will never legally be sold a cigarette and that they and their generation can grow up smoke-free".

Speaking at the annual Tory party conference on Wednesday (Oct 4), the UK PM also promised to bring in a restriction on the availability of vapes.

This, he said, would be part of the government's plans to "put the next generation first."

<h2>Criticism of the plan</h2>

Critics claim that the move would lead to the creation of a "black market."&nbsp;They also challenge him on his earlier push back against a part of the government's anti-obesity strategy.&nbsp;

At the time, he had chalked it up to "people's right to choose". The anti-obesity strategy plans to ban two-for-one junk deals. However, the scheme has been delayed by the government for another two years.

In an interview with BBC, Sunak said that smoking cigarettes and eating crisps or a piece of cake. He said that while junk food means an unbalanced diet, there is no safe level of smoking.

"Smoking is unequivocally the single biggest preventable cause of death, disability and illness in our society," said Sunak.

The British PM said that measures restricting choices were "never easy", but that nobody would want their children or grandchildren to grow up smoking.

Akshata Murty makes surprise debut at Conservative party conference. Here's what UK PM's wife said

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak&nbsp;has&nbsp;announced the scrapping of the northern leg of the HS2 train line — from West Midlands to Manchester.

<h2>Sunak's speech</h2>

"I'm ending this long-running saga. I am cancelling the rest of the HS2 project. And in its place we will reinvest every single penny - 36 billion pounds - in hundreds of new transport projects in the north and the midlands, across the country," said Sunak

Better value for money and a shorter project delivery time will reportedly be the reasons he will state for this move.&nbsp;

While the northern leg will be scrapped, work has started on the London to Birmingham leg of the HS2.

Talking to BBC earlier, Defence Minister Grant Shapps had hinted the scrapping. He said: "We have to wait for his actual speech to hear exact confirmation."&nbsp;

Sunak's Conservative Party is badly lagging the opposition Labour Party in polls. An election is expected next year in UK.

<h2>Anger over scrapping</h2>

Prior to announcement, the possibility of scrapping of the HS2 train&nbsp;triggered a wave of anger among local leaders and businesses.&nbsp;Sunak's decision has not gone down well with his party colleagues and with members of the Opposition and it has caused anger.

Andy Burnham, the labour mayor of Greater Durham, has labelled the move disrespectful of "people across the whole of the North."

"It just proves there are so many people in politics - many in the Tory party - that think they can treat the north of England differently to the way they treat other parts of the country," he told BBC.

Andy Street, the Conservative West Midlands mayor, called a press conference on Monday (Oct 5th) where he "warned" Sunak that getting rid of the HS2 line was equivalent to "cancelling the future".

Thirty businesses, including football club Manchester United, had&nbsp;written to Sunak, urging him to commit to the HS2 line, and&nbsp;dodge "economic self-sabotage".

The announcement put a full stop&nbsp;to&nbsp;weeks of speculation over the future of the HS2 line. The line in question was supposed to help cut down travel time, create more space on the rail network and boost jobs outside London. However, the latest estimates show that the cost to deliver the project may come to £71 billion ($85.8 billion). This is a significant increase from the 2019 prices, which failed to account for the spike in material and labour costs.&nbsp;

Rishi Sunak, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer and current UK Prime Minister, has informed the COVID-19 inquiry that he is unable to provide WhatsApp messages from his time as Chancellor during the pandemic, citing&nbsp;his&nbsp;failure to back&nbsp;these messages, as reported by The Guardian.

He stated in his witness statement that he no longer has access to these messages because he changed his phone on several occasions.

This development coincides with the launch of the second phase of the COVID-19 inquiry, led by Baroness Heather Hallett. This phase, titled "Core UK decision-making and political governance," will scrutinise key decision-making processes in Westminster between January 2020 and February 2022, covering the period when England lifted its final Covid restrictions.&nbsp;

<h2>Parallels with Boris Johnson's situation</h2>

This situation echoes the delay witnessed when former Prime Minister Boris Johnson was asked to provide his WhatsApp messages from his leadership during the pandemic.

Johnson's failure to remember the password&nbsp;for his old mobile phone led to the involvement of technical experts to recover the messages.

As reported by The Guardian, Sunak's statement to the inquiry reads: "Having changed my phone a number of times over the last three years, I do not have access to the WhatsApp messages that I sent or received during the relevant time, and neither were the messages backed up. My expectation would be that if the officials on those groups had considered that any information being communicated by WhatsApp message needed to be preserved to form part of the official HMT record, then those officials would have taken steps to ensure that happened."

Earlier this year, the Cabinet Office sought an exemption from providing information and messages that it deemed irrelevant to the inquiry's objectives.&nbsp;Subsequently, the UK government initiated a legal challenge, but in July, the High Court ruled against the government, affirming that the requested documents should be submitted.

Akshata Murty, wife of British PM Rishi Sunak, has decided to shut her investment start-up Catamaran Ventures. Why have Murty's businesses been embroiled in controversies?

Gravitas: Did the UK’s first lady benefit from government grants?

Akshata Murty, the wife of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, has made the decision to close down her&nbsp;controversial&nbsp;start-up investment company named Catamaran Ventures UK, as revealed in the latest company filings, reported The Times.

Catamaran Ventures UK, based in London, was co-founded by Akshata Murty and Rishi Sunak in 2013 and has been a subject of scrutiny due to its association with taxpayer-funded schemes.

<h2>Background on start-up</h2>

Catamaran Ventures UK primarily invested wealth stemming from Akshata Murty's stake in Infosys, her father's IT business.

The company's recent accounts indicate that its investments were valued at £3.8 million ($4.6 million), up from £3.5 million ($4.2 million)&nbsp;in 2021. However, they&nbsp;also disclosed that it owed Akshata Murty £4.6 million ($5.5 million), according to unaudited accounts for 2022.&nbsp;

The company faced controversies related to its connection with government-funded initiatives. For instance, Study Hall, an education technology firm with Catamaran's investment, received a government grant of £349,976 ($425,288)&nbsp;through Innovate UK, an arm's-length state body. This raised concerns, with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer highlighting a possible pattern of behaviour regarding such grants.

Furthermore, Mrs Wordsmith, an education start-up backed by Catamaran, collapsed within six months of receiving £650,000 ($789,880) from the taxpayer through the Future Fund, a pandemic funding scheme championed by Rishi Sunak.

Similarly, The New Craftsmen, a Catamaran-backed furniture company, and Digme Fitness, a fitness chain in which Akshata Murty held a directorship and shares, faced difficulties, with some having received funding from the same scheme.

<h2>About Akshata Murty and her investments</h2>

Akshata Murty, 43, is the daughter of NR Narayana Murthy, the Indian billionaire and co-founder of Infosys. In 2021, Catamaran's accounts revealed a loan to the company from a related party for £652,499 ($793,060), which was subsequently transferred to Akshata Murty on April 30, 2015, the same day Rishi Sunak resigned his directorship from the business. The accounts acknowledged that the loan had not been adequately disclosed in previous reports.

Rishi Sunak first listed Catamaran Ventures UK in the register of interests in 2019 when he assumed the role of chief secretary to the Treasury.

Apart from Catamaran Ventures UK, Akshata Murty's investments outside the company have also sparked controversy. Her direct shares in Koru Kids, a childcare firm, led to meetings with the children's minister shortly before a budget announcement that could have benefited the company. The Prime Minister faced criticism for not properly disclosing his family's financial interest in a firm with potential government policy implications, an oversight he described as "inadvertent" and apologised for.

In the past year, it was revealed that Akshata Murty held "non-dom" tax status, a designation she later relinquished amid sustained criticism.

For instance, Study Hall, an education technology firm with Catamaran's investment, received a government grant of £349,976 ($425,288) through Innovate UK, an arm's-length state body. The Prime Minister faced criticism for not properly disclosing his family's financial interest in a firm with potential government policy implications, an oversight he described as "inadvertent" and apologised for. The United Kingdom on Wednesday (September 27) greenlit oil and gas production in Rosebank field, the country's largest undeveloped field, in order to bolster energy security. The development has come one week after British government diluted its net-zero targets. Both developments have triggered condemnation from environmentalists.

Equinor and Ithaca energy will together invest USD 3.8 billion to develop the field. Equinor is a Norwegian oil and gas producer while Ithaca Energy is a subsidiary of Israeli group Delek.

The Rosebank oil field is in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland.

UK oil and gas regulator, The North Sea Transition Authority, said it had "granted development and production consent for the Rosebank field, north-west of Shetland".

Equinor has an 80 per cent interest in the project while Ithaca has the remainder.

"Rosebank stands as the largest undeveloped field in the UK," said Gilad Myerson, executive chairman at Ithaca Energy, as quoted by Reuters.

"The Rosebank project will create thousands of jobs and contribute significantly to securing the UK's energy needs for many years to come," he added.&nbsp;

UK greenlights North Sea oil drilling a week after diluting net-zero targets

Recently, Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that the government will push back the ban on the sale of new petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles in the UK from 2030 to 2035.

Convicted rapists often go on to repeat their crimes. The United Kingdom has over the years recorded many cases where, having received an early pardon, such criminals go on to repeat their offences, or commit even serious ones.

Now, a new "gear change" by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will force convicted rapists to serve the duration of their full sentences. This, as per Daily Mail, is likely to be part of an upcoming speech by Sunak.

<h2>The 'real Rishi'</h2>

As per Daily Mail, the move is part of a wider 'gear change' by Number 10 Downing Street, which aims to reveal the 'real Rishi' ahead of the general elections next year.

Part of this strategy was last Wednesday's 'green gamble' hitting the brakes on the race to net zero.

At the time, announcing the move, Sunak said it was "the first in a series of long-term decisions to deliver change".

"I have spent my first year as Prime Minister bringing back stability to our economy, your Government and our country. And now it is time to address the bigger, longer-term questions we face," added the British PM.

"The real choice confronting us is do we want to change our country and build a better future for our children, or do we want to carry on as we are. I have made my decision–we are going to change," he added.

<h2>Repeat offenders</h2>

As per the report, UK Ministry of Justice figures show that in the seven years — since 2016, 112 sex offenders released early have gone on to commit serious offences.

Notorious cases include that of Ashley Shuck, a rapist who in 2017 was convicted of raping ad kidnapping an elderly woman&nbsp;and sexually assaulting another woman, just weeks after he was released halfway through a previous eight-year sentence for raping an 18-year-old.

At the time of his new offences, Shuck was out on the licence. In the UK, offenders are automatically released after serving half their standard determinate sentence. They then complete the rest of their sentence on licence.

Last year, the Police, Crime and Courts Act automatically ended the early release for sexual offences that carry the maximum sentences. Additionally, those serving a sentence of four years or more are now required to serve at least two-thirds of their sentence.

UK: Sunak to double down on sex offenders, will force them to serve whole sentence

Smoking is quite common among the younger generations today. It is a personal preference and a particularly addictive dependency. However, it has detrimental health impacts on both a smoker and every other person who inhales the smoke.

British PM Rishi Sunak may introduce anti-smoking measures: Report

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is considering introducing a stringent proposal that would ban the next generation from ever being able to buy cigarettes, a report in The Guardian has claimed.&nbsp;

Sunak, who is said to "hate" smoking, has shown interest in bringing a law, much like the one imposed by the New Zealand government under former prime minister Jacinda Ardern last year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Under the&nbsp;first-of-its-kind anti-smoking laws passed by the Ardern regime, those aged 14 and younger cannot buy&nbsp;cigarettes ever in New Zealand, thereby outlawing the deadly habit for the next generation entirely.&nbsp;

According to The Times, Downing Street has already instructed civil servants&nbsp;reporting to Professor Sir Chris Whitty, the chief medical officer, to chalk up a proposal for tobacco control that seeks to implement Sunak's vision.

“Sunak is personally very exercised about smoking.&nbsp;Both from the point of view of the impact on young people and the NHS," a government source was quoted as saying by the publication.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Notably, last year, a government-ordered review proposed a host of measures to&nbsp;hit a target of having fewer than five&nbsp;per cent of people smoking by 2030, down from 14 per cent.

"We want to encourage more people to quit and meet our ambition to be smoke-free by 2030, which is why we have already taken steps to reduce smoking rates," a government spokesman said.&nbsp;

Former Barnardo’s chief Javed Khan who proposed the idea, also batted for a ban on&nbsp; smoking in outdoor spaces to create a “social norm” and a prohibition on some council housing tenants from smoking in their homes. However, former PM Boris Johnson rejected the proposals&nbsp;

Apart from cigarette smoking, Sunak is also&nbsp;considering banning disposable vapes, cartoon packaging and flavours that appeal to children.

<h2>What does the law say in New Zealand?</h2>

The new laws introduced in New Zealand that kicked in 2023 include a complete ban on selling tobacco to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009 and implementing an annually rising smoking age.

The ban which will remain in place for a person’s whole life is also punishable by a fine of up to NZ$150,000 ($ 95,910). These laws are introduced in a bid to make New Zealand “smoke-free” by 2025.

Furthermore, the law also moves to reduce the amount of nicotine allowed in smoked tobacco products as well as minimising the number of tobacco-selling retailers in the country by 90 per cent. However, these restrictions do not apply to vapes which reportedly some New Zealanders have switched to after the ban.

Five Bulgarian nationals will be charged with conspiracy to conduct espionage over allegedly spying for Russia, said the UK prosecutors in a statement on Thursday (September 21).

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) further added that the charges were related to the alleged offences that occurred between August 2020 and February 2023.

Orlin Roussev, 45, Bizer Dzhambazov, 41, Katrin Ivanova, 31, Ivan Stoyanov, 31, and Vanya Gaberova, 29, will appear at the Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on Tuesday (September 26), as per news agency AFP reports.

UK to charge five Bulgarian nationals suspected of spying for Russia

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, on Wednesday (September 20), said that Britain will soften the policies that were aimed at achieving net zero carbon emissions by the year 2050 and will instead follow a "pragmatic" approach to reach the set target.

''I'm confident that we can adopt a more pragmatic, proportionate and realistic approach to meeting net zero that eases the burdens on working people. And that's the second part of our new approach. Now, I'm not saying there will be no hard choices and nor am I abandoning any of our targets and commitments. I am unequivocal that we will meet our international agreements, including the critical promises in Paris and Glasgow, to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees," Sunak said during a press conference.

He further announced that a ban on petrol and diesel cars would be pushed from 2030 to 2035.

"I'm announcing today that we're going to ease the transition to electric vehicles. You'll still be able to buy petrol and diesel cars and vans until 2035. Even after that, you'll still be able to buy and sell them second-hand. We're aligning our approach with countries like Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Australia, Canada, Sweden and the US States such as California, New York and Massachusetts," he said.

"If we continue down this path, we risk losing the British people and the resulting backlash would not just be against specific policies, but against the wider mission itself," the UK PM told a press conference.

He further announced an ease in the speed of transition to heat pumps from gas boilers in homes claiming that he wouldn't compell any household to improve their insulation.

Sunak then emphasised&nbsp;the fact that "no one can doubt" the reality of climate change and said that he believes in net zero and the UK's ability to achieve the net zero target.

He however added that "too often motivated by short-term thinking, politicians have taken the easy way out, telling people the bits they want to hear, and not necessarily always the bits they need to hear."

"We haven't had an honest conversation about these issues in a long time. It's not enough to just announce these targets -- great headlines in the short term -- to will this thing to happen. That's not right," he said.

The UK had the freedom to ease targets as it had achieved "the fastest reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the G7", he asserted.

Also read: Trudeau playing vote bank politics, Canada meddling in India's affairs: Expert Sunak then emphasised the fact that "no one can doubt" the reality of climate change and said that he believes in net zero and the UK's ability to achieve the net zero target. He however added that "too often motivated by short-term thinking, politicians have taken the easy way out, telling people the bits they want to hear, and not necessarily always the bits they need to hear." "We haven't had an honest conversation about these issues in a long time. It's not enough to just announce these targets -- great headlines in the short term -- to will this thing to happen. That's not right," he said. The UK had the freedom to ease targets as it had achieved "the fastest reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the G7", he asserted. UK PM Rishi Sunak softens policies aimed at achieving net zero carbon emissions

UK Interior Minister Suella Braverman, on Wednesday (September 20) said that Britain needed to take a practical approach to achieving net zero because it could not "save the planet by bankrupting the British people".

''The Prime Minister is taking an approach of pragmatism and proportionality when it comes to delivering our net zero commitments. It's right that he assesses the issue as a whole, taking into account people's bank balances, livelihoods, the way that they are living their lives and the cost of living challenges that many families around the country are facing. And ultimately, we're not going to save the country by bankrupting the British people," Braverman said.

''We remain committed to delivering net zero by 2050. That is my personal view. I agree with the government's position on this. What I also agree with is that we need to adopt an approach of pragmatism and balance and we need to ensure that we achieve that goal, but in a sustainable way, in a way that doesn't impose undue and disproportionate cost on families and householders on workers, and that we don't inhibit the daily way of lives that many of us are used to."

"For example, the way we get to work, the way we heat our homes, the way we run our lives. We are all committed to making our country greener cleaner and more sustainable. We all share that noble view, myself included. But we need to adopt an approach of pragmatism and proportion," she added.

The United Kingdom was the first major economy to create a legally binding target aimed at bringing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 and was also quick to build up its renewable energy capacity in earlier years.

But recently, PM Rishi Sunak's government has appeared to waver on some of the measures that are required to hit that target as the cost of decarbonising everything, from travel to the heating of homes, has crystalised during a prolonged cost-of-living crisis.

Brits over planet? Climate targets shouldn't bankrupt people, says UK minister Suella Braverman

In what comes as a major policy shift, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is planning to weaken some of the green commitments made by his government, according to a BBC report.&nbsp;

In total, as many as seven core policy changes are currently under discussion and could be announced by Sunak himself during a planned speech in the coming days.&nbsp;

Under the proposal, Sunak could delay a ban on the sales of new petrol and diesel cars and phasing out gas boilers, the report stated. Currently, the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars is set to come into force in 2030. However, the government could push it to 2035 despite batting for the previous timeline since 2020 in various policy papers.&nbsp;

Secondly, the Tory administration will attempt to water down the proposal of phasing out the installation of gas boilers by 2035. While the timeline will not be altered, the government is expected to only want 80 per cent of the boilers to be phased out by that year.

Additionally, the 2026 ban on off-grid oil boilers will be delayed to 2035 and only an 80 per cent phase-out target will be set for that date.&nbsp;

As for homeowners and landlords, the government will inform that there will be no&nbsp;energy efficiency regulations on homes. Previously, the Conservative leaders had come under heavy scrutiny for considering plans to impose fines on landlords who failed to upgrade their properties to a certain level of energy efficiency.&nbsp;

Sunak will also convey to Britons that there will be&nbsp;no new taxes to discourage flying; no government policies to change people's diets; and no measures to encourage carpooling. Last but not least, the Tory leadership might rule out the burdensome recycling schemes which have caused deep inconveniences to the public.&nbsp;

Policy shift for Sunak as he plans to weaken key green policies ahead of 2024 election

Rishi Sunak seems to have sort of backed his premiership on the assumption that by giving himself the most amount of time in government by having the latest general election as possible probably towards the end of next year.

UK PM Rishi Sunak to step back on net zero policies

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s effort to corner India diplomatically over the alleged role of 'agents of government' in the death of Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar seems to have failed miserably after its so-called “closest allies” refused to condemn New Delhi over the incident.

Earlier in the day, CBC News, quoting sources from the government, reported that Trudeau briefed the leaders of some of Canada's closest allies, including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron, and US President Joe Biden.

While Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese didn’t express his opinion on the incident, his British counterpart’s spokesperson said that the Rishi Sunak government’s priority is to secure a trade deal with India.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the US officials said that they have been in close contact with&nbsp;their Canadian counterparts about the issue and said they were "quite concerned" about the allegations.&nbsp;

During a press conference on Tuesday (Sep 19) in Canberra, a reporter asked the Albanese whether he personally raised concerns with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at this month's G20 meeting in India over the death of the Khalistan terrorist.

<h2>'Chill out': Albanese deflects question</h2>

"Your foreign ministry says it's raised concerns with the Indian government about its alleged role in the death of a Sikh activist in Canada, have you raised those concerns personally with Mr Modi at the G20, and do you regret calling him a boss when he visited in Australia?" the reporter asked.&nbsp;

To which Albanese responded, "Seriously, you should chill out a bit. You know, we were at a venue where Bruce Springsteen played the last time I was there.

"And I made the point that the reception he got from the community... the Indian diaspora welcomed him very strongly, it's as simple as that.

Canada vs India over Nijjar death: UK, Australia PMs appear cold to Trudeau's claims. Here's how

Senior leaders of the Conservative Party have urged British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to use his next manifesto to address the party's unpopularity among young voters. According to a report by The Guardian early Sunday (September 17), there are concerns that the party could be sunk without any action to win over voters below the age of 40.&nbsp;

There is also mounting anxiety among moderate Tories that the party is failing to prioritise net zero and help for renters that could attract younger voters.

Tom Tugendhat, the minister of state for security, warned that the Conservative Party can no longer sit around and assume that voters will simply turn to the party as they get older.&nbsp;

Addressing a gathering last week, Tugendha said, "There isn’t a Conservative in the country that doesn’t believe the opportunity for people to have a home, a family – whatever that family looks like – is vital and we need to be the party of aspiration, helping people achieve that ideal with Conservative policies."

“There are areas where we can be doing more, especially when it comes to young people and the next generation," Tugendha added. The minister also said that the Tories need to ensure that young people "have those opportunities to help them get ahead and we can’t leave them behind."

He pointed out that any offer to young voters had to include sticking with the party’s commitments to achieving net zero by 2050, The Guardian reported.&nbsp;

The minister's comments come as the latest Opinium poll revealed that the Labour Party maintained a 15-point lead over the Conservatives. The results showed that Labour had a 46-point lead among voters aged between 18 and 34.

Echoing Tugendhat's concerns, former minister Stephen Hammond said, "It is difficult to disagree with Tom’s comments. If we don’t have policies that resonate with the next generation of voters we are sunk."

UK: Senior Tories urge PM Sunak to address party's unpopularity among young voters

Travelling to the United Kingdom is set to be expensive for tourism, visiting or studying purposes. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's government announced that the UK visit visas for stays less than six months will incur an additional cost of ₹1,543 (GBP 15), while UK student visas will see an increase of ₹13,070 (GBP 127) for travellers worldwide, including Indians.

The new visa fees will come in effect starting October 4th.

<h2>UK visa fees hike: What does it look like for incoming students?</h2>

The UK Home Office said that while the fee for a UK visit visa for less than six months will increase to ₹11,835 (GBP 115), the fee for applying for a UK student visa from outside the UK will be ₹50,428 (GBP 490). This matches the amount charged for in-country applications.&nbsp;

The UK Home Office has also noted a 15 per cent increase in the cost of most work and visit visas, along with a minimum 20 per cent hike in fees for priority visas, study visas, and certificates of sponsorship.

This decision follows British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's announcement in July to significantly raise fees and health surcharges paid by visa applicants to support the UK's state-funded National Health Service (NHS) and meet public sector wage increases.

"We are going to increase the charges that we have for migrants who are coming to this country when they apply for visas and indeed something called the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which is the levy that they pay to access the NHS," he said at the time.

"All of those fees are going to go up and that will raise over GBP 1 billion, so across the board visa application fees are going to go up significantly and similarly for the IHS," he said.

Furthermore, this fee hike extends to various visa categories, including health and care visas, applications for British citizenship, fees for visit visas spanning six months, two, five, and ten years, and numerous entry clearance and leave to remain fees in the UK for work, study, indefinite leave, and certificates of sponsorship.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is mulling over banning Chinese officials from half of his global artificial intelligence (AI) safety summit, which is scheduled to be held in November at Bletchley Park, The Guardian reported citing sources. Is Rishi Sunak mulling over partially banning Chinese officials from AI summit in November?

UK Conservative Party heavyweights Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak were not always rivals. As Johnson's fortunes went down the bunker of Partygate scandal that rocked London's political corridors in 2021, Sunak eventually became the PM after Liz Truss resigned following a brief stay at 10, Downing Street. Sunak got the&nbsp;premiership after his sole&nbsp;competitor, Penny Mordaunt, dropped out of the race.

For the much of his premiership, Johnson saw his relationship with Sunak as that of a 'mentor' and 'mentee' and when Sunak eventually quit as secretary of exchequer (akin to finance minister) 'without even a text', Johnson was aghast.

"Who the f--k does he think he is?," Johnson is reported to have said with a seething reaction in a new book called 'The Right To Rule', authored by Ben Riley-Smith, the political editor of The Telegraph newspaper.&nbsp;

The author claims in the book that Sunak had started preparing ground for his premiership bid much before February 2023, when the Sue Gray's initial investigation findings about Partygate scandal indicted Johnson of violating Covid restrictions to host parties at his official prime ministerial residences.&nbsp;

The timeline of this claim is significant.&nbsp;

The alleged discussions related to Sunak's premiership occurred even before December 23, 2023, when 'ReadyforRishi' domain name was registered online, the earliest previously reported indication of Sunak's intent to canvass support for his potential premiership.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Meanwhile, for Boris Johnson who was still the Prime Minister then, Sunak's potential plans of succession continued to create jitters.&nbsp;

The book claims that Boris Johnson was prone to believing in political conspiracies.

"One wild and unsubstantiated rumour he voiced was that Sunak’s father-in-law, Indian billionaire Narayana Murthy, had Dominic Cummings on a retainer," the book claims, while referring to British political strategist who served as Chief Advisor to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson from July 2019 to November 2020.&nbsp;

Boris Johnson 'believed' Narayana Murthy was helping Rishi Sunak to become UK PM, claims new book

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, on Friday, took to his official X handle and posted a video announcing a ban on American XL bully breed after a&nbsp;man in central England succumbed to serious injuries that he sustained after he was attacked by dogs. Sunak said&nbsp;it was clear that the attacks were not about a handful of badly trained dogs but a pattern of behaviour.

A man in central England succumbed to serious injuries that he endured after he was attacked by dogs, emergency services said on Friday (September 15). This is the latest in a spate of incidents reported in the United Kingdom that prompted PM Rishi Sunak to vow action.

The emergency services said that they were called on Thursday (September 14) that a man was left with critical wounds after being attacked by two dogs near Birmingham.

"Upon arrival, we found a man who had sustained multiple life-threatening injuries and was in a critical condition," said the West Midlands Ambulance Service.

"Unfortunately, after arrival at hospital, despite the best efforts it became clear that nothing more could be done to save him (and) he was confirmed deceased."

Staffordshire Police released a statement saying that a 30-year-old man was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of having dogs that were dangerously out of control.

On Saturday (September 9), an 11-year-old girl was left seriously injured after she was attacked by an American bully XL and Staffordshire bull terrier crossbreed puppy.

The incident led Interior Minister Suella Braverman to seek "urgent advice" on whether the American bully XL breed should be banned.

Expressing her shock and concern, Braverman described the American XL Bully as a significant and lethal threat to communities, especially children, in a social media statement. She stressed the need for immediate action.

"This is appalling," she posted on X.

<h2>UK's Dangerous Dogs Act</h2>

The Dangerous Dogs Act prohibits certain types of dogs in private possession if they get dangerously out of control in a public place or a private place. The law also provides for such dogs to be seized by the authorities.

Currently, the UK bans four dog breeds, including the pitbull terrier, Japanese tosa, dogo Argentino, and fila Brasileiro, under the Dangerous Dogs Act.&nbsp;

Notably, the XL Bully is not officially recognised as a distinct breed by the UK's Kennel Club. The Kennel Club argues against breed-specific bans, saying that responsible ownership and training play a pivotal role in preventing dog-related incidents, rather than focusing solely on specific breeds.

The term "bully breeds" originated from their historical use in blood sports like bull baiting, characterised by their muscular build and heavier bone structure compared to pit bulls.
