Prior to his trip to India for the G20 meeting next month, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is involved in a new conflict of interest dispute amid claims that his family would profit financially from the post-Brexit trade arrangement that the two nations are now negotiating.

UK: PM Rishi Sunak under fire over India-UK trade deal

Britsh Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has found himself mired in a controversy as the UK and India seek to flesh out a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Sunak is expected to face some transparency-related questions as his wife Akshata Murty's Infosys shareholding, worth almost $630 million, becomes the centre of debate in the proposed FTA.

Opposition party and trade experts are questioning the full financial impact that Infosys will have after the deal and if it will reap major benefits due to Sunak's relationship with Murty. The vast majority of Murty and Sunak’s enormous wealth comes from Infosys, her family’s tech company, which was valued at about $63 billion in May.

Darren Jones, the Labour chair of the business and trade select committee urged Sunak to come clean on the issue.

"As the prime minister recently learned, it’s important he declares any interests properly. I expect him to do so in respect of the India trade deal too.”

Meanwhile, other leaders urged Sunak to recuse himself from a part of the negotiation, particularly involving software companies, since the likes of Infosys have been batting for the UK to relax visa norms.

According to reports, allowing more visas for workers in the IT and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors appears to be one of the key demands put forth by New Delhi in the ongoing FTA talks, which is currently in its 12th round of negotiations.

Sunak hid his connections

The call for transparency comes at a time when Sunak is preparing for his first visit to India as the British PM next month to attend the G20 Leaders' Summit in New Delhi. He is expected to discuss the UK-India trade negotiations in a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

FTA in jeopardy? Sunak faces conflict of interest questions over Akshata-Infosys connection

UK: Rishi Sunak faces transparency questions related to wife Akshata Murty's Infosys shares

The UK government has introduced a plan to introduce mandatory whole-life sentences for murderers whose crimes are sexually motivated. This move, aimed at the most serious offenders, signifies a significant shift in sentencing policy and is designed to ensure that individuals convicted of such heinous acts never have the opportunity for release.

Expanding the use of whole-life terms

Currently, whole-life orders are exceptionally rare and are typically reserved for serial killers or those whose crimes involve unique aggravating factors, such as abusing a position of power to commit murder. However, the Ministry of Justice now proposes to expand the use of these sentences, making them the default starting point for judges in the most severe cases. The intent is to limit the circumstances in which such orders can be overturned on appeal, reported the Guardian.

The government has cited recent cases, such as the murders of Zara Aleena and Sabina Nessa, where this expanded power could have been applicable if in place earlier.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed the government's commitment to ensuring that "life will mean life" for the most heinous criminals.
The United Kingdom's (UK) backlog of asylum applications awaiting a decision has hit a record high in the year to June, the news agency Reuters reported on Thursday (August 24) citing official figures. The interior ministry said that 78,768 applications were made by people who arrived in the country illegally in the 12 months to June, up 19% than the previous year.

UK asylum applications' backlog rises to record high, reveal official figures

A British parliamentary watchdog on Thursday (August 24) said that UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak should have declared that his wife Akshata Murty had a stake in a company that was set to benefit from government cash. UK PM Sunak slammed by watchdog over wife's stake in firm benefiting from state funding

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has once again refused to put a timeline to stopping the migrants-crossing-the-channel-crisis. Sunak said his plan to stop the boats may not succeed before the next election.

The Tory leader said the migrant situation was a "complex problem" which was costing exchequers and the public a lot of money.

“I want it to be done as soon as possible, but I also want to be honest with people that it is a complex problem. There is not one simple solution and it can’t be solved overnight and I wouldn’t be being straight with people if I said that was possible," said Sunak.

“The current system is both unsustainable and completely unfair, but particularly unfair on British taxpayers who are forking out millions of pounds to house illegal migrants in hotels and local communities," added Sunak.

“It’s not an easy problem to fix. I never said we would be able to solve it overnight – it will take time and we have to attack it from lots of different ways."

While Sunak tempered his expectations, he looked at the bright side saying that the number of illegal migrants crossing the Channel this year had been down for the first time in several years.

Sunak's back-and-forth on migrant crisis

I never said we would be able to solve it overnight – it will take time and we have to attack it from lots of different ways." 'Oh the irony you're raising alcohol duty...': UK PM Sunak heckled while pouring a pint at beer festival

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is expected to confirm that the British Government will issue 100 licences to companies that want to extract oil and gas from the North Sea.

UK PM Sunak approves more drilling in North Sea, 100 new licences accepted | World Business Watch

The United Kingdom has pledged to grant “hundreds” of licences for North Sea oil and gas extraction, on Monday (July 31), in a bid to bolster its energy security, said the government. The announcement has since drawn criticism from environmental groups in the country and could hinder the country’s goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

What does UK government plan to do?

The plan was confirmed by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak who had previously said that hundreds of future licences could also be granted.

“Now more than ever, it’s vital that we bolster our energy security and capitalise on that independence to deliver more affordable, clean energy to British homes and businesses,” said the British PM’s office in a statement.

It added, “Investment in the North Sea will continue to unlock new projects, protect jobs, reduce emissions and boost UK energy independence.”

Sunak, during his visit to Aberdeenshire on Monday, argued that the plan will help the UK reach its target of meeting net zero by 2050 and even by this date the country is expected to get more than a quarter of its energy from oil and gas.

Furthermore, the government also said that while a “more flexible application process” would be used for the licence requests, they would still be subject to a “climate compatibility” test for carbon reduction goals.

The oil and gas industry regulator expects the first of the new licences to be awarded in the fall, said the UK government.

The UK PM also spoke about how the move will help reduce reliance on “hostile states”, including Russia, and improve energy security. “We have all witnessed how (Russian President Vladimir) Putin has manipulated and weaponised energy... Now more than ever, it’s vital that we bolster our energy security.”

UK’s carbon capture and storage

Sunak also announced support for two carbon capture and storage (CCS) clusters in Scotland and northern England, along the North Sea coast, in addition to the two already under construction. The statement also said that the four clusters could support up to 50,000 jobs by 2030.

A ‘wrecking ball’ for UK’s climate commitments

The Conservative-led government’s plans are also in complete contradiction with the pledges from the opposition Labour Party to ban new oil and gas projects in the North Sea.

The move comes as record-breaking temperatures were witnessed across Europe, the United States and China, with scientists predominantly blaming human-induced climate change and burning fossil fuels. Environmentalists warn that these new projects by the Sunak government are incompatible with the country’s targets.

“Extracting more fossil fuels from the North Sea will send a wrecking ball through the UK’s climate commitments at a time when we should be investing in a just transition to a low-carbon economy and our own abundant renewables,” said Oxfam’s climate policy adviser, Lyndsay Walsh, as quoted by The Guardian.
