Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced that the fees and health surcharge paid by visa applicants, including Indians, towards the UK's National Health Service (NHS), which is funded by the state, will significantly rise. This increase aims to meet the country's public sector wage increase.

Sunak confirmed a hike of 5 to 7 percent across various public sectors, such as for teachers, police, and junior doctors. However, he emphasised that the government would not borrow more money or increase taxes to fund these raises due to concerns about inflation.

"If we're going to prioritise paying public sector workers more, that money has to come from somewhere else because I'm not prepared to put up people's taxes and I don't think it would be responsible or right to borrow more because that would just make inflation worse," Sunak told reporters at a Downing Street press conference.

The second day of the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, has been jam-packed with activity. Leaders from all across the world are still deliberating on Ukraine. NATO has not yet extended an invitation to Ukraine to join the organisation because NATO wants Ukraine to complete its democratic reforms. British PM Rishi Sunak tells us more in this report.

NATO Summit Day 2: 'In time we will be stronger with Ukraine as a NATO ally too'

The Ashes 2023 has been a big topic of debate in the last couple of weeks for more than one reason as England and Australia share centre stage in the English summer. While the Aussies lead the Ashes 2-1, both England and Australia have been in hot water recently for a controversy surrounding Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s. The controversy that triggered the feud on Sunday, July 2, was given a hilarious revisit by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his British counterpart Rishi Sunak when they met at the NATO summit on Tuesday, July 12 in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Biden's European trip commences in London, focus on Ukraine conflict and NATO Summit

Embarking on a Europe tour, US President Joe Biden arrived in the UK on Sunday (July 9) evening for a brief visit. Biden is scheduled to meet British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and separately discuss climate change with King Charles before joining the NATO summit in Lithuania.

The US president’s visit to London comes ahead of the NATO summit on July 11-12. Prior to his departure for his multi-nation tour, the White House said the trip was designed “to further strengthen the close relationship between our nations”.

Biden departed for Britain from the Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Sunday. He will meet King Charles III and UK PM Rishi Sunak after which he will fly to Vilnius for the NATO summit. The last stop on his tour will be to the new member of the US-led alliance, Finland.

Biden’s visit to the UK

During his visit to Britain, the US president will meet the British PM, at Downing Street, on Monday in a low-key meeting where the two leaders are expected to discuss the upcoming NATO summit and the war in Ukraine.

“As we face new and unprecedented challenges to our physical and economic security, our alliances are more important than ever,” said the Sunak’s office, in a statement.

The incumbent British PM has also somewhat repaired ties that had cooled under his predecessors Boris Johnson and Liz Truss due to their tough stance over a post-Brexit deal with the European Union.

“The UK is Europe’s leading NATO ally, we are the United States’ most important trade, defence and diplomatic partner, and we are at the forefront of providing Ukraine with the support they need to succeed on the battlefield,” said Sunak, in a statement ahead of Biden’s visit.

US president to meet King Charles III for the first time

According to the British monarch’s office, Biden will be received by King Charles III at Windsor Castle’s quadrangle where a guard of honour will give a Royal Salute and the US national anthem will be played.

The US president and the British monarch will discuss climate issues, said the White House, a subject on which Charles has campaigned and spoken out for over 50 years.

While Biden met Charles during a visit for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth last year, he did not attend his coronation, sending First Lady Jill Biden instead.

Biden and Erdogan to meet at NATO: Ankara

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet Biden on the sidelines of the upcoming NATO summit, said the Turkish presidency, on Sunday. However, the statement did not indicate when the meeting will be held.

According to Erdogan’s office, the talks between the two leaders will focus on “Ukraine’s position in NATO, Sweden’s NATO membership, and the delivery of F-16” fighter jets, which Turkey has sought and hopes to secure from the US.

The statement from the Turkish presidency said that Biden and Erdogan also held a call where they discussed Sweden’s NATO bid. Following the call, the US president said, Erdogan “still wants to work on something on the F-16s. I told him we wanted a deal with Sweden, so let’s get that done.”

However, the Turkish president reiterated his longstanding position, on Sunday, about Sweden’s perceived lax attitude toward alleged Kurdish militants living there and that Stockholm needed to crack down harder.

“Sweden has taken some steps in the right direction by making changes to its anti-terrorism legislation,” Erdogan told Biden, as quoted by the Turkish presidency.

This comes as Erdogan is also set to hold NATO-organised talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, on Monday, a day ahead of the military alliance’s leadership summit in the Lithuanian capital city of Vilnius.

Biden’s visit to the UK During his visit to Britain, the US president will meet the British PM, at Downing Street, on Monday in a low-key meeting where the two leaders are expected to discuss the upcoming NATO summit and the war in Ukraine. ALSO READ | Biden heads to Europe amid heated debate over giving cluster munitions to Kyiv “As we face new and unprecedented challenges to our physical and economic security, our alliances are more important than ever,” said the Sunak’s office, in a statement. US president to meet King Charles III for the first time According to the British monarch’s office, Biden will be received by King Charles III at Windsor Castle’s quadrangle where a guard of honour will give a Royal Salute and the US national anthem will be played. ALSO READ | Explained | Several nations, rights groups and UN oppose US move to send cluster bombs to Ukraine The US president and the British monarch will discuss climate issues, said the White House, a subject on which Charles has campaigned and spoken out for over 50 years. While Biden met Charles during a visit for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth last year, he did not attend his coronation, sending First Lady Jill Biden instead. Biden and Erdogan to meet at NATO: Ankara Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet Biden on the sidelines of the upcoming NATO summit, said the Turkish presidency, on Sunday. However, the statement did not indicate when the meeting will be held. ALSO READ | Biden defends decision to provide cluster bombs to Ukraine, says 'they are running out of ammunition' According to Erdogan’s office, the talks between the two leaders will focus on “Ukraine’s position in NATO, Sweden’s NATO membership, and the delivery of F-16” fighter jets, which Turkey has sought and hopes to secure from the US. The statement from the Turkish presidency said that Biden and Erdogan also held a call where they discussed Sweden’s NATO bid. Following the call, the US president said, Erdogan “still wants to work on something on the F-16s. I told him we wanted a deal with Sweden, so let’s get that done.” However, the Turkish president reiterated his longstanding position, on Sunday, about Sweden’s perceived lax attitude toward alleged Kurdish militants living there and that Stockholm needed to crack down harder. ALSO READ | Turkey remains indecisive on Sweden’s NATO bid; Stoltenberg to bridge ‘gaps’ between countries “Sweden has taken some steps in the right direction by making changes to its anti-terrorism legislation,” Erdogan told Biden, as quoted by the Turkish presidency. This comes as Erdogan is also set to hold NATO-organised talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, on Monday, a day ahead of the military alliance’s leadership summit in the Lithuanian capital city of Vilnius.
Over 50 Members of Parliament (MPs) in the United Kingdom (UK) have owned stakes in publicly listed companies that have raised questions about the possible conflicts of interest and that until now have been in secret. According to a report by The Guardian on Sunday (July 9), dozens of MPs have shares in banks, supermarkets, housebuilders, defence companies and energy suppliers. The companies include the likes of HSBC, Barclays and BP, the report said.

The parliamentary rules, which have been unchanged since 2015, require MPs to register holdings they have in a single company when they own over 15% of its shares or when their shares in it are worth more than $89,691 (£70,000).

The rules mean that MP's shareholdings, including the ones held by former UK prime minister Theresa May, did not need to be disclosed in parliamentary registers. However, citizens have been left in the dark about some of the financial interests of the political leaders.

The MPs with shareholdings

The Guardian report on Sunday said that the list of MPs with shareholdings included the chair of the environment select committee, Robert Goodwill and SNP chief whip Brendan among others. All these holdings were below the threshold, the report pointed out.

The report also said that current UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had a financial stake in National Grid until two days before he was selected as the Conservative candidate for his constituency.

Former PM Theresa May, meanwhile, owned shares in BP when she was the home secretary and during the same period, her husband held shares in BP, Barclays, BT and Centrica. Four months after May was elected as PM, these shares also seemed to have been moved to a blind trust.

The report said that shareholdings such as that owned by May and her husband that are under the threshold could still fall under the House of Commons rules that require lawmakers to publicly disclose any interests, including those held by their close family, that might reasonably be thought to influence their actions in parliament.

The report also identified ministers who met lobbyists for companies while not declaring the shares held by themselves or their family members.

A call for review of parliamentary rules

Following the findings, transparency campaigners have called for a review of parliamentary rules. Speaking to The Guardian, Steve Goodrich from Transparency International UK said that if MPs had shares in a company affected by legislation going through parliament, there was invariably a tension between them protecting their financial affairs and advancing the public good.

"Having these details out in the open is a key safeguard against abuse of public office," Goodrich said, adding the public had the right to know what role money played in politics.

British government denies report that it's planning to drop £11.6bn climate pledge

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is facing scrutiny over transparency-related issues regarding party donations and air travel expenses.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faces transparency questions

The Ashes 2023 has hit the ground running both on and off the field as the second Test in Lord’s proved to be a volatile affair between two age-old rivals in the game of cricket. The fuel to the fire was added on Sunday, July 2 after England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow was dismissed in a controversial fashion which has provoked action and reaction not just from both sets of crowds, but the entire cricketing fraternity. The off-field battle in the meantime reached beyond the diplomatic boundaries as UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Australia’s Anthony Albanese also got involved in the feud that has been the talking point ever since it happened.

Brief Cricket History of the Colonial Masters

Sunday’s Jonny Bairstow dismissal marks another chapter in the book of the age-old rivalry between England and Australia, the roots of which date back to the 19th century when the rivals first met in 1882. Over the years, English cricket history was glittered by the Ashes while their arch-rivals were enjoying success both in head-to-head and world dominance. This Ashes though has been different to others as both England and Australia walk into the battlefield with tags of World Champions (England in limited-overs and Australia in Tests).

Turning back the pages, you will find that Ashes has been surrounded by a series of on and off-field battles dating back to the days of Sir Don Bradman, Ian Botham, Ian Chappell then Michael Vaughan, and now in the present day to Pat Cummins and Ben Stokes. Interestingly, the names have changed but the sense of tension between the players, fans, and the media has been the same over the years.

What happened on Day 5 of Lord’s Test?

On the last ball of the 52nd over, Bairstow facing Cameron Green left his crease having thought the dot ball has been called dead, while it was not. The moment was seized by Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey as he threw the ball on the stumps which resulted in Bairstow’s unlikely dismissal. The on-field umpires, Ahsan Raza and Chris Gaffaney went upstairs to the third umpire Marais Erasmus to check whether the ball is dead or not, who confirmed that Baistrow was indeed out, leaving England fans and the team in disbelief as they thought the dismissal was against the spirit of the game.

England would later pump a reaction in the form of skipper Ben Stokes’ aggressive approach that saw him score 155. However, his dismissal in the 73rd over proved to be the final straw for the hosts as they went on to lose by 43 runs, resulting in the home team trailing the Ashes 0-2.

Off-field battle

Before the start of the Ashes 2023, much was spoken about the Bazball approach of England and how Australia would tackle the situation. But looking at how things have turned out, the visitors are now a draw away from retaining the Holy Grail. After the match, England skipper Ben Stokes defended his team’s approach while also insisting that he wouldn't have used the same method to win a Test match.

“The first thing that needs to be said is that it is out. But would I want to win a game in that manner? The answer for me is no.

“If the shoe was on the other foot, I would have a deep think about the whole spirit of the game. If I was fielding captain at the time, I would have put a lot more pressure on the umpires to ask them what their decision was around the (end of the) over.

“Jonny was in his crease, then left his crease to come out and have the conversation between overs as every batsman does. For Australia, it was the match-winning moment,” Stokes said in the post-match conference.

The battle then took a diplomatic turn as UK PM Sunak backed Stokes and insisted his team would bounce back in the third Test at Headingley in Leeds which will start on Thursday, July 6.

“The Prime Minister agrees with Ben Stokes. He said he simply wouldn’t want to win a game in the manner Australia did,” Sunak’s spokesman said, as quoted by The Telegraph.

“But the game did provide an opportunity to see Ben Stokes at his best, and it was an incredible test match.

“He has confidence that England will bounce back at Headingley (in the Third Test starting on Thursday),” Rishi Sunak’s sportsman added.

Consequence of political involvement

The consequence of the Jonny Bairstow moment resulted in angry reactions from English fans, journalists, and former players, while the Australian media backed their team. Like the rich frictional cricket history between the sides, Australian PM Anthony Albanese did not sit quiet and backed his team’s tactics having taken leads in both men’s and women’s Ashes.

“I’m proud of our men’s and women’s cricket teams, who have both won their opening two Ashes matches against England. Same old Aussies – always winning!”

“Australia is right behind [Alyssa Healy], [Pat Cummins] and their teams and look forward to welcoming them home victorious,” Albanese tweeted while backing his team after Sunday’s incident.

The Ashes 2023 has hit the ground running both on and off the field as the second Test in Lord’s proved to be a volatile affair between two age-old rivals in the game of cricket.

Brief Cricket History of the Colonial Masters Sunday’s Jonny Bairstow dismissal marks another chapter in the book of the age-old rivalry between England and Australia, the roots of which date back to the 19th century when the rivals first met in 1882. Off-field battle Before the start of the Ashes 2023, much was spoken about the Bazball approach of England and how Australia would tackle the situation. I’m proud of our men’s and women’s cricket teams, who have both won their opening two #Ashes matches against England. Same old Aussies – always winning! Australia is right behind @ahealy77, @patcummins30 and their teams and look forward to welcoming them home victorious 👏 — Anthony Albanese (@AlboMP) July 3, 2023 × Consequence of political involvement The consequence of the Jonny Bairstow moment resulted in angry reactions from English fans, journalists, and former players, while the Australian media backed their team. Like the rich frictional cricket history between the sides, Australian PM Anthony Albanese did not sit quiet and backed his team’s tactics having taken leads in both men’s and women’s Ashes.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's government on Friday asked London's High Court to stop a public enquiry into its handling of the Covid pandemic forcing it to hand over some internal WhatsApp messages.

Britain's Cabinet Office refused to provide WhatsApp messages concerning the government's handling of the pandemic and other political issues earlier this month, saying some of the material sought was "unambiguously irrelevant".

The enquiry was ordered by the government itself in 2021 and is chaired by a former senior judge, Heather Hallett, who asked the government to provide two years' worth of WhatsApp messages between senior figures, including former prime minister Boris Johnson and 40 different individuals.

However, the Cabinet Office has brought a legal challenge over the enquiry's demands, which its lawyer James Eadie told the court was brought "with some considerable reluctance".

He argued in court filings that documents relevant to the enquiry "simply cannot cover all government business and all the policy areas that were live over the two-year period".

Eadie added the WhatsApp messages contained references to personal and family information and "comments of a personal nature" about identifiable government figures.

But lawyers representing Hallett said the limits the Cabinet Office sought to place on public inquiries' powers to compel the production of documents was "flawed and unworkable".

Hugo Keith said in court filings that the relevance of material is kept under review, saying a witness statement provided by Johnson earlier this month led to the relevance of previously-provided WhatsApp messages being reassessed.

"Material that had been redacted by the Cabinet Office as 'unambiguously irrelevant' is now assessed as relevant in light of Mr Johnson's statement," Keith said.

Johnson is an interested party to the Cabinet Office's case and his lawyers argue the government's legal challenge should be dismissed.

"Mr Johnson has no objection to the enquiry inspecting the materials unredacted, subject to appropriate security and confidentiality arrangements," they said in court filings.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's government on Friday asked London's High Court to stop a public enquiry into its handling of the Covid pandemic forcing it to hand over some internal WhatsApp messages.

Also read | British PM Rishi Sunak found using pen with erasable ink to sign official documents, make notes Eadie added the WhatsApp messages contained references to personal and family information and "comments of a personal nature" about identifiable government figures. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Sonam Kapoor invited for UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s reception to mark UK-India week

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has come under controversy yet again after it was revealed that he has been using pens with erasable ink during his tenure at 10, Downing Street. The discovery made by The Guardian raises fresh security concerns over the secrecy of the documents and other important records that Sunak may have signed.

The publication noted that the prime minister is regularly seen using the disposable "Pilot V" fountain pens during his time as chancellor and prime minister. He has been photographed making cabinet notes, working on government papers and signing official letters in the UK and at international summits using the same pen.

The pen, which sells for £4.75, carries an "erasable ink" logo. The company markets the pen as “ideal for those learning to write with ink because if you make a mistake, the ink erases using standard ink eradicators”.

This raises concerns as his hand-written notes and other documents where he has used the ink can be erased.

Pen provided by the civil service: Downing Street

Sunak's office, however, maintains that the PM has never used the 'erasing' feature of the pen, nor would he do so ever.

“This is a pen provided by and used widely by the civil service. The prime minister has never used the erase function and nor would he," Sunak's press secretary was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Sunak's opponents took the opportunity to target him and said the PM was accountable for his actions.

“When trust in politicians is at an all-time low, the PM signing official documents in erasable ink could push it through the floor and into the basement," said Tom Brake, a former Liberal Democrat MP.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has come under controversy yet again after it was revealed that he has been using pens with erasable ink during his tenure at 10, Downing Street.

Watch | UK MPs publish Partygate report × Pen provided by the civil service: Downing Street Sunak's office, however, maintains that the PM has never used the 'erasing' feature of the pen, nor would he do so ever. “Erasable ink, lost mobile phones and disappearing WhatsApp messages all add to a picture of a cavalier attitude towards ensuring government is accountable for its actions.” What if? Experts are wary that official Covid inquiry papers that could put Sunak's party members in jeopardy, might be fudged by removing the PM's scribbled notes or signatures.
On Thursday, all eyes are on the Court of Appeal, which is set to deliver its judgement on the legality of the Rwanda flights. The initial scheduled flight in June of the previous year was abruptly halted due to a last-minute ruling by the European Court of Human Rights.
