US and UK forces on Saturday (Feb 24) launched a fresh wave of strikes against 18 Houthi targets in Yemen amid attacks on Red Sea shipping by the rebel group.

The strikes "specifically targeted 18 Houthi targets across eight locations in Yemen" &nbsp;which included weapons storage facilities, attack drones, air defence systems, radars and a helicopter, according to a joint statement.

It was co-signed by Australia, Bahrain, Denmark, Canada, the Netherlands and New Zealand.

All these countries gave unspecified "support" to the new round of strikes, which is the second such move in the month of February and the fourth since the Iran-backed rebels began launching targeted attacks at ships in the region.

"The Houthis' now more than 45 attacks on commercial and naval vessels since mid-November constitute a threat to the global economy, as well as regional security and stability, and demand an international response," the statement said.

Houthi-run Al-Masirah television reported "a series of raids on the capital Sanaa," while AFP correspondents in the rebel-controlled city in western Yemen said they heard several loud bangs.

"The United States will not hesitate to take action, as needed, to defend lives and the free flow of commerce in one of the world's most critical waterways," Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said in a separate statement after the strikes.

US officials said that, on January 11, Navy Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Christopher J Chambers was boarding the boat and slipped inside the gap which was created by the combatant craft of the SEALs&nbsp;and the high waves between the vessel. 
 
After Chambers fell, Navy Special Warfare Operator 2nd Class Nathan Gage Ingram jumped into the sea with the hope of saving him, as per the US officials. 
 
"Two Navy SEALs tragically lost their lives in the operation that thwarted the defendants charged today from allegedly smuggling Iranian-made weapons that the Houthis could have used to target American forces and threaten freedom of navigation and a vital artery for commerce," Monaco added.

The ship “appeared to be headed from Map Ta Phut, Thailand, and headed in the direction of the Red Sea,” Ambrey said.

It added, “Merchant shipping is advised to stay clear of the vessel and proceed with caution.”

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said that the ship was attacked by two missiles “resulting in a fire on board,” adding that the United States-led coalition forces in the region are responding to the incident, without giving any further details.&nbsp;

A report by the Associated Press citing ship-tracking data said that the Palau-flagged cargo ship was named ‘Islander’ and was headed to Egypt. It had also previously sent out messages saying “SYRIAN CREW ON BOARD” to potentially avoid being targeted by the Houthis, reported the AP.&nbsp;

The responsibility for the recent attack was not immediately claimed by any group but comes amid a series of strikes by Iran-backed Yemen-based Houthi rebels in the Red Sea in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

<h2>Israel intercepts attack</h2>

Air raid sirens were sounded early Thursday in the Israeli port city of Eilat followed by videos of what appeared to be a missile getting intercepted. The Israeli military later confirmed the reports and said that an incoming missile was intercepted by its Arrow missile defence system.

The system “successfully intercepted a launch which was identified in the area of the Red Sea and was en route to Israel,” said the Israeli military in a statement. It added, “The target did not cross into Israeli territory and did not pose a threat to civilians.”

Israeli officials did not immediately confirm what the fire was, nor where it came from. Eilat, a key port city on&nbsp;the Red Sea route has repeatedly come under attack by the Houthis since the beginning of the war. However, these attacks have not caused any damage, so far.&nbsp;

Paradip is home to an oil refinery owned by the Indian Oil Company, with a refining capacity of 300,000 barrels per day (bpd), located in eastern Odisha state.

According to data from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), the M/T Pollux is owned by Oceanfront Maritime Co SA and managed by Sea Trade Marine SA. Representatives from these companies have yet to respond to requests for comment on the incident.

The owner of the group and operator of the bulk carrier, that was targeted on Monday (Feb 12), regularly trades cargo with Iran, "so this was assessed to be the likely destination", said Ambrey.

"The group owner of the bulker was also listed on the US stock market index NASDAQ, which was identified as the likely reason for the attack," it said.&nbsp;

Another security organisation, Ambrey, said that the Marshall Islands-flagged, Greece-owned bulk carrier "was targeted by missiles in two separate incidents" within 20 minutes and "was reportedly hit and sustained physical damage on the starboard side". According to Ambrey, the vessel had a private armed security team on board.
