Maersk, the Danish shipping giant announced on Wednesday (Jan 24) that two ships belonging to its US subsidiary had turned back after explosions nearby in the Red Sea.&nbsp;

The incident happened when the ships were transiting the Bab el-Mandeb strait amid the escalating Red Sea crisis which has majorly impacted the shipping route and global trade.&nbsp;

Bab al-Mandab is the outlet of the Red Sea. It is between between Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula, and Djibouti and Eritrea on the African coast.&nbsp;

In a statement, Maersk said that both crews and the cargo were unharmed. It added that the ships were being escorted by US Navy ships and "enroute, both ships reported seeing explosions close by and the US Navy accompaniment also intercepted multiple projectiles".

"The US Navy has turned both ships around and is escorting them back to the Gulf of Aden," it said, further stating that the vessels were being escorted back to the Gulf of Aden.&nbsp;

In a separate statement, US Central Command said that Yemen's Houthi forces fired three anti-ship ballistic missiles toward the US-flagged container ship Maersk Detroit as it was transiting the Gulf of Aden.&nbsp;

Maersk on January 5 said that it would divert its container vessels away from the Red Sea for the foreseeable future. But Maersk ships were an exception until Wednesday. The company said that that would no longer be the case.&nbsp;

"Following the escalation of risk, MLL is suspending transits in the region until further notice," it said on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The Gaza head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees said that tank shelling on a UN shelter on Wednesday killed nine people in Gaza's main southern city of Khan Yunis, with the toll expected to rise.&nbsp;

"Two tank rounds hit building that shelters 800 people - reports now 9 dead and 75 injured," Thomas White, UNRWA's Gaza director, said on X.&nbsp;

The two service personnel were identified Monday (Jan 22) as Navy Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Christopher J Chambers and Navy Special Warfare Operator 2nd Class Nathan Gage Ingram.

The two SEALs were involved in a January 11 operation, during which the elite special operations personnel boarded a dhow off the coast of Somalia and seized missile components allegedly made in Iran.

Following protocol, a second SEAL dove into the water in an attempt to rescue him.&nbsp;

The incident is under investigation, said the US Navy on Monday.&nbsp;

UK's Ministry of Defence on Sunday (Jan 21) announced its expenditure to upgrade a projectile system, that currently is being used by the Royal Navy, to shoot down drones over the Red Sea.

Britain's Ministry of Defence said that it would spend a total of $514 million (405 million pounds) on the Sea Viper Air Defence system.

The MoD released a statement saying that Sea Viper would be upgraded with missiles featuring a new warhead and software that will allow it to counter ballistic missile threats.

The contracts were awarded to the British division of MBDA, a missiles joint venture owned by Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo, the statement further added.

"As the situation in the Middle East worsens, it is vital that we adapt to keep the UK, our allies and partners safe," Defence Minister Grant Shapps said in the statement.

"Sea Viper has been at the forefront of this, being the Navy's weapon of choice in the first shooting down of an aerial threat in more than 30 years."

The announcement comes amid tensions in the Red Sea region after the United States and Britain launched retaliatory coalition strikes and shot down drones by Yemen's Houthi rebel group as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to heighten.

Earlier, on Saturday (Jan 20), the United States had launched fresh strikes on Yemen's Houthi rebels targeting an anti-ship ballistic missile, which as per the US army, was aimed into the Gulf of Aden and was prepared to launch.

Netanyahu's comments came amid the ongoing maritime confrontation between the US and Yemen-based Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, with the latter consistently ramping up&nbsp;attacks on international merchant ships in purported solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.&nbsp;

Netanyahu on Thursday (Jan 18) vowed in a press conference that the war in Gaza will continue "until complete victory", and added that it could take "many more months".

The establishment of a state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel has been a widely accepted solution to the territorial dispute between Israelis and Palestinians in West Asia.&nbsp;

It forms an essential part of the two-state solution, the proposed framework for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by establishing two states for two peoples: Israel for the Jewish people and Palestine for the Palestinian people.&nbsp;

The US is now directly attacking Houthi targets in Yemen and the maritime region around Bab-al Mandeb, a strategic chokepoint.

On Friday (Jan 19), the United States said that Houthis launched two anti-ship ballistic missiles at a US-owned tanker ship that hit the water near the vessel but caused no injuries or damage.

An official readout said that two anti-ship ballistic missiles were launched by Houthis on Jan 18 (at 9 PM, local time) at M/V Chem Ranger, a Marshall Island-flagged, US-owned and Greek-operated ship.&nbsp;

"The crew observed the missiles impact the water near the ship. There were no reported injuries or damage to the ship. The ship has continued underway."

On Thursday (Jan 18), Netanyahu also said that Israel must have security control over all land west of the River Jordan which is supposed to include the territory of a future Palestinian state.&nbsp;

"This is a necessary condition, and it conflicts with the idea of (Palestinian) sovereignty. What to do? I tell this truth to our American friends, and I also stopped the attempt to impose a reality on us that would harm Israel's security," he said.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said his government would not stop working towards a two-state solution, adding there would be "no reoccupation of Gaza".
