The resolution which was passed "demands that the Houthis immediately cease all such attacks, which impede global commerce and undermine navigational rights and freedoms as well as regional peace and security." The resolution was adopted after Russia, as well as Algeria, Mozambique and China abstained. 
 
The intensified attacks by Houthi rebels have forced shipping companies to bypass the route and divert around South Africa's Cape of Good Hope, which has increased the time and cost being spent on their journey.

The resolution "condemns in the strongest terms the at least two dozen Huthi attacks on merchant and commercial vessels since November 19, 2023, when the Huthis attacked and seized the Galaxy Leader and its crew," as reported by news agency AFP. 
 
The Houthis, who have been attacking the international maritime traffic in the Red Sea&nbsp;in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war, have expressed their solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.

Quoting two US defence officials,&nbsp;CNN had reported that the attack consisted of 24 missiles and drones. It also said that initial assessments indicate no harm to ships and no injuries or casualties resulting from the extensive drone and missile barrage.

As per a US Central Command (CENTCOM) statement "Iranian-backed Houthis launched a complex attack of Iranian designed one-way attack UAVs..., anti-ship cruise missiles, and an anti-ship ballistic missile from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen into the Southern Red Sea."

It further said that the drones and missiles were downed by a combination of F/A-18 warplanes operating from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier and one British and three American destroyers.

The US deployed three destroyers to counter and eliminate the imminent threats, said one official.&nbsp;

"We can confirm a Houthi attack occurred today near the southern Red Sea. We’ll provide additional details when they’re available," said a third official, as quoted by CNN.

A Houthi drone boat packed with explosives detonated in the Red Sea on Thursday but failed to cause any damage or casualties, the US&nbsp;Navy said, as the Yemen-based group continued its attacks in defiance of international calls to stop.

The latest attack came one day after 12 countries including the US&nbsp;Britain and Japan issued a joint statement cautioning the Houthis of unspecified "consequences" unless it halts its attacks, in what one US&nbsp;official on Wednesday suggested was a final warning.

The Iran-aligned Houthis, who control much of Yemen, have launched wave after wave of exploding drones and missiles at commercial vessels since Nov. 19, trying to inflict a cost in what they say is a protest against Israel's military operations in Gaza.

The Houthi campaign has been extraordinarily disruptive to international shipping, causing some companies to suspend transits through the Red Sea and instead take the much longer, costlier journey around Africa.

Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, who leads US&nbsp;Naval forces in the Middle East, told reporters on Thursday that the Houthi exploding boat drove out about 50 miles (80.47 kilometres) into the Red Sea and then detonated in dense shipping lanes.

"It came within a couple of miles of ships operating in the area — merchant ships and U.S. Navy ships — and we all watched as it exploded," Cooper told reporters, adding the target of the attack was not clear.

Cooper said there have now been 25 attacks by the Houthis against merchant vessels transiting the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden and added "there are no signs that their irresponsible behaviour is abating."

The repeated Houthi attacks have increased pressure on President Joe Biden to respond militarily, something his administration has been reluctant to do out of fear of escalating already soaring regional tensions.

Retired four-star Marine general Frank McKenzie, who led US&nbsp;forces in the Middle East until retiring in 2022, said the Biden administration's response to attacks in the Red Sea and against US&nbsp;troops at bases in Iraq and Syria has been too "tentative" and "unfocused."

"To reset deterrence, we must apply violence that Tehran understands," McKenzie wrote in an Op-Ed published on Thursday in the Wall Street Journal.

The United States and other countries last month launched Operation Prosperity Guardian to protect civilian vessels, which Cooper said now included contributions from 22 countries. So far, Cooper said US&nbsp;warships and US&nbsp;partners have shot down two cruise missiles, six anti-ship ballistic missiles and 11 drones.

On Sunday, US&nbsp;warships sank three Houthi speed boats to protect a commercial vessel from being hijacked.

A senior Biden administration official told reporters on Wednesday "if that happened again, we would probably do the exact same thing." The same official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the 12-nation statement to the Houthis was very clear.

"I would not anticipate another warning," the official said.

At the United Nations, a US&nbsp;representative told the U.N. Security Council the United States believed the situation in the Red Sea had reached an "inflection point."

Asked whether Operation Prosperity Guardian might target Houthi positions with strikes to prevent them from attacking ships, Cooper said that the 22-nation coalition was purely defensive in nature.

"Anything that happens outside of the defensive aspect of this operation is a completely different operation," he said.

The Indian government on Thursday (Jan 4) expressed concerns over reports that some Indians residing in Canada were receiving "extortion calls".

"People getting extortion calls, especially Indian nationals, is a matter of serious concern," Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said answering queries at the regular media briefing.

"We (India and Canada) have several issues to discuss. There was an issue about a temple which was attacked. The Canadian police then thereafter went into the investigation of the temple premises, and the person who had intruded it later turned out, and they issued a statement that the person was of unsound mind. So there are these issues that keep happening...," Jaiswal said.

As per local media reports, law enforcement officials in Canada have established a task force designated to investigate reports of extortion targeting some businesses run by the Indo-Canadian community.

The reports citing police in Canada said that at least nine incidents were being probed.&nbsp;

During the briefing, Jaiswal also touched upon the Red Sea issue stating that New Delhi was closely monitoring the 'unfolding situation' there with Indian Navy ships actively patrolling the region amid concerns around suspected drone attacks on merchant vessels in the region.

"In on what's happening, the situation in the Red Sea...we had made it very clear that we attach 
very high importance to freedom of navigation, free movement of commercial shipping," Jaiswal said.

"We are looking at the situation. It's an evolving situation, and we are looking at all aspects of it. As you know, we have Indian Navy ships patrolling the area. They're also keeping a watch on Indian ships there," he added.

He then clarified that India was not a part of any multilateral initiative or project in the Read Sea region, however, the government was closely monitoring the situation.

"So far, we are not part of any multilateral initiative or project in the area. But we are looking at the unfolding situation very closely," he added.

<h2>Have 60 days to appeal to highest Qatar court, says MEA&nbsp;</h2>

After a Qatari court commuted the death sentence of eight Indian nationals last week, India's External Affairs Ministry said that a 60-day window had opened to appeal the case in the highest court in Qatar.

The MEA spokesperson further said that the legal team of the MEA has obtained the court order and that the document is confidential.

"As far as the issue is concerned, there is a time of 60 days when this issue can be appealed in the Court of Cassation, which is the highest court in Qatar," Jaiswal stated emphasising on the temporal significance of the period.

"We issued a press release in which we informed you that the death sentence, which was originally a death penalty, has been changed to imprisonment sentences. Now our legal team has that court order, and I can confirm that all of them have received sentences of different durations, and the death penalty has been abolished," Jaiswal said.

He further added that the MEA was exploring the next steps with the family members of the eight Indian nationals and the legal team.

According to the global shipping line Mediterranean Shipping Co, which was founded by Gianluigi Aponte in Italy in 1970, United VIII was attacked while it was transiting the Red Sea. United VIII was reportedly built in 2006. Presently, the ship is sailing under the flag of Liberia.

The company has assured that its top priority is to ensure the safety of the&nbsp;seafarers and that "MSC will continue to reroute vessels booked for Suez transit via the Cape of Good Hope”.

With the number of attacks in the Red Sea seeing a spike, the Cape of Good Hope route, on the Atlantic coast of the Cape Peninsula in South Africa, is being treated as an alternative by the shipping companies.&nbsp;

Reports by news agencies citing the MSC shipping company said that following the attack, the ship had sent a notification to a nearby coalition task force warship. Presently, the shipping company is engaged in carrying out ‘evasive manoeuvres’.&nbsp;

Iran's&nbsp;Alborz&nbsp;warship&nbsp;has entered the Red Sea through the strategic Bab al-Mandeb strait, Tasnim news agency reported Monday, at a time of heightened tensions over the globally important waterway.

The agency did not give specific reasons for its deployment, but noted that Iranian military vessels had operated in the area since 2009.

"The&nbsp;Alborz&nbsp;destroyer&nbsp;entered the Red Sea... by passing through the Bab al-Mandeb," waterway at the southern tip of the Red Sea, connecting with the Gulf of Aden in the Indian Ocean, the agency said.

It added that Iran's naval fleet has been operating in the area "to secure shipping lanes, repel pirates, among other purposes since 2009".

The United States in early December set up a multinational naval task force for the Red Sea following a flurry of missile and drone attacks by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi rebels on merchant vessels which led shipping companies to suspend passages through the area.

The Houthis say the attacks were in solidarity with Palestinians in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip, where Israel is battling Hamas militants.

According to the International Chamber of Shipping, 12 per cent of global trade passes through the Red Sea, which provides a shortcut past Africa via the Suez Canal.

On Sunday, US Navy helicopters fired on Houthi rebels attempting to board a cargo ship off Yemen, with the rebels reporting 10 fighters dead or missing.

Regional tensions have spiked since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7.

On Monday, Britain's Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said Britain was "willing to take direct action" against the Houthis "to deter threats to freedom of navigation in the Red Sea".&nbsp;

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron had spoken on Sunday with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian about the Red Sea tensions.

"I made clear that Iran shares responsibility for preventing these attacks," he said on social media, noting Tehran's "long-standing support" for the Houthis.

Abdollahian criticised the "double-standards" of some Western countries, according to a statement from Iran's foreign ministry, saying the "Israeli regime cannot be allowed... to set the region on fire" with the Gaza war.

The United States previously accused Iran of being "deeply involved" in the Houthi attacks.

Iran has denied such accusations saying the Houthi rebels were acting on their own.
