Following IFC-IOR inputs, an Indian Navy aircraft, a warship, and a Coast Guard ship were diverted to aid MV CHEM PLUTO.

The tanker was safely escorted by the Indian Coast Guard ship Vikram to Mumbai for repairs and further investigation of the attack. Upon arrival, the Indian Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal team conducted a preliminary assessment of the vessel to determine the type and nature of the attack.

A study published in the Journal of Interdisciplinary Science Topics propounds that four probable natural occurrences might have contributed to the parting of the sea. They are: negative surges, eastern winds, tidal surges, and Rossby Wave.

“Investigating into the methods in which the waters may have receded, allowing Moses to cross safely, may be dependent on having 'perfect' conditions, but are still physically feasible events,” a study by students Rebekah Garratt and Rikesh Kunverji claims.

“Meteorological phenomena are known to be notoriously unpredictable and can lead to chaotic chains of events leading to extreme phenomena, which may have been viewed by bystanders as the ‘parting of the sea’.”

“Whether a miraculous act of God or due to some of the unlikely, coincidental phenomena discussed in this paper, the chance of ‘parting’ is not zero.”

One form of explanation is ‘wind setdown’, the experts said. It is a naturally occurring event where a strong, steady wind can lower water levels in certain areas while causing a buildup downwind. This occurrence is recognised as the opposite of storm surges.

Another explanation provided is tidal resonance, which could have led to an extreme low tide, thus unveiling more of the seabed.

The Gulf of Suez, due to its significant tidal fluctuations, is identified as a probable crossing point, they said.

Moreover, Rossby Waves, which occur in rotating fluids such as oceans owing to the Earth’s rotation, could have played a part by shifting vast amounts of water and causing an unusual tide recession, the study claimed.

Bab el-Mandeb, which is just 29 km wide at its narrowest point, is a strategically important strait due to where it is located.

Bab el-Mandeb separates the Arabian Peninsula from East Africa. The Red Sea opens into the Gulf of Aden, which joins the Arabian Sea and then the Indian Ocean, through Bab el-Mandeb.&nbsp;

The strategically important island of Mayyum or Perim in the strait became part of South Yemen after the end of British imperialism in 1967. After Yemen’s unification in 1990, it came under the control of Sana’a, the capital of the united country.

The Houthis, who captured Sana'a in 2015, could never take control of Bab el-Mandeb.&nbsp;

The Houthis, despite a semblance of cessation of hostilities during the Yemeni civil war at present, have drones, short-range rockets and even ballistic missiles reportedly due to Iranian support.

Yemen's Houthis have claimed responsibility for vessels attacked in the Red Sea in&nbsp;recent weeks.

They declared war against Israel&nbsp;in solidarity with the Palestinians, and Israeli retaliatory attacks in Gaza by Israel after the October 7 attacks.&nbsp;

The Houthis fired drones and ballistic missiles towards Israel, all of them were shot down either by US warships or Israeli defence missiles.&nbsp;

By the end of November, the Houthis reportedly began attacking commercial ships passing through the Red Sea. Initially they said they would attack only Israel-flagged ships but later they said all ships would be targeted.

According to Ambrey Analytics, a risk management firm, there were 37 incidents involving tankers from November 19 to December 18, most of which were around Bab el-Mandeb.&nbsp;

Washington has not ruled out taking offensive measures, including bombing Houthi targets. With that backdrop, the possibility of a wider maritime warfare cannot be ruled out.

This comes after the&nbsp; United States military reportedly accused Iran of&nbsp;drone attack on the Japanese-owned “Israel-affiliated” chemical tanker MV Chem Pluto, off the coast of India.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Baseless’</h2>

“These repetitive accusations are rejected as baseless,” Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said at a briefing, adding that Washington should instead face accusations for its role in Israel’s war on Gaza.

He added, “Such claims are aimed at projecting, distracting public attention, and covering up for the full support of the American government for the crimes of the Zionist regime (Israel) in Gaza.”&nbsp;

<h2>US military's accusations against Iran</h2>

Pentagon, speaking on the incident told WION that the drone was “fired from Iran.” Notably, it is the first time that Washington&nbsp;directly accused Tehran of targeting ships.&nbsp;

The attack, as per US officials, occurred at approximately 10:00 am &nbsp;(local time) in the Indian Ocean, 200 nautical miles off India's Gujarat coast.

It said that the “motor vessel CHEM PLUTO, a Liberia-flagged, Japanese-owned, and Netherlands-operated chemical tanker” was hit by “a one-way attack drone fired from Iran.”

In a statement to WION, the Pentagon said “No U.S. Navy vessels were in the vicinity. U.S. Naval Forces Central Command remains in communication with the vessel as it continues toward a destination in India.”&nbsp;

It added, “This is the seventh Iranian attack on commercial shipping since 2021.”&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom-based maritime security firm, Ambrey said that the ship was “Israel-affiliated” and was en route from Saudi Arabia to India.&nbsp;

The Wall Street Journal citing the Dutch company operating the vessel said that it had connections to Israeli shipping tycoon Idan Ofer.&nbsp;

The recent attack off the Indian coast came amid a flurry of attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea by the Yemen-based Iran-backed Houthi rebels amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

The militant group had warned that they would target all ships heading to Israel, regardless of their nationality, and warned international shipping companies against dealing in Israeli ports.&nbsp;

The Indian Navy said that it responded to a request for assistance by dispatching an aircraft and a warship to ensure the safety of the involved ship and its crew. Indian Defence officials reportedly said, “As per inputs received, the fire has been extinguished but it has affected its functioning.”&nbsp;

They added, “The ICGS Vikram was deployed on the patrol of the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone when it was directed towards the merchant ship in distress. All crew are safe which includes around 20 Indians.”&nbsp;

The Indian Navy is “now investigating whether the drone used to attack the vessel was launched from long range or from a nearby vessel. The vessels operating in the area where the attack took place are being checked.”

The latest incident follows a similar suspected drone attack on an Israeli-owned cargo ship in the Indian Ocean last month.
