As the first major American city to permit the announcement, or "adhan," to be heard over speakers five times a day, year-round, Minneapolis will permit the broadcast of the Muslim call to prayer at all hours.

The Minneapolis City Council overwhelmingly decided on Thursday to change the city's noise ordinance, which had barred morning and late-evening calls at specific times of the year owing to noise limits, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The decision took place during the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims.

“The Constitution doesn’t sleep at night,” said Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, after the vote. He said the action in Minneapolis shows the world that a “nation founded on freedom of religion makes good on its promise.”

Since at least the 1990s, a significant portion of East African immigrants have lived in Minneapolis, where mosques are now commonplace. No organised community resistance was raised to the decision. Next week, it is anticipated that Mayor Jacob Frey will sign the bill.

“Minneapolis has become a city for all religions,” Imam Mohammed Dukuly of Masjid An-Nur mosque in Minneapolis told the Associated press, who was among several Muslim leaders who witnessed the vote.

In order to allow the adhan to be broadcast outdoors five times per day during Ramadan, city officials collaborated with the Dar Al-Hijrah mosque three years ago. When light first comes in the morning, at midday, in the middle to late afternoon, at sunset, and when the night sky appears, prayers are performed. Summertime sunrise in Minnesota can come as early as 5:30 a.m., and the solstice sunset occurs after 9 p.m.

Last year, the city permitted broadcasts all year long, but only from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., eliminating early morning and occasionally late night prayer.

Jewish and Christian leaders who recently attended a public meeting supported extending the adhan's hours.

Sri Lanka: IMF approves $3-billion bailout, can the country come out of its deep economic mess?

It's the holiest month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan, when Muslims across the globe will be observing fast, even in space. Yes, you read it right. UAE astronaut Sultan al-Neyadi arrived at the space station on March 3 and the only question boggling him is how will he be ending his fast, as he sees 16 sunsets daily at the space station.

You must be wondering why 16. Here, is the answer.

For centuries, a setting sun has signalled the end of fasting with delicious meals. But what if the sun's clockwork changes as it does for astronauts riding aboard the International Space Station? The orbiting laboratory whips around the Earth at the speed of 27,600 kilometres per hour (27,600 miles per hour) giving the traveller 16 sunrises and sunsets each day. Dizzy right? Well, it's true.

'It's not compulsory'

Sultan al-Neyadi is one of the few Muslim astronauts who have travelled to space, and his mission will end in five months. He then will be the first astronaut from UAE to complete a long-duration stay in space.

While al-Neyadi is in space, Muslims on Earth will be observing fast in Ramadan and till the time he'll return, they will celebrate two festivals — Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

At a press conference before his space travel, al-Neyadi had said that six months is a long duration for a mission, which is a great responsibility. He added that since an 'astronaut' fits in the definition of 'traveller,' it excuses him from fasting during Ramadan.

"It's not compulsory if you're sick. So in that regard — anything that can jeopardise the mission or maybe put the crew member at risk — we’re actually allowed to to eat sufficient food to prevent any escalation of lack of food or nutrition or hydration."

He added that he'll wait and see how it goes.

Religion in Space:

Back in 1968, during NASA's Apollo 8 mission, astronauts read Genesis, the first book of the Bible, on their way to orbit the moon. Buzz Aldrin, who was with Neil Armstrong during their first landing in 1969 also took communion from the Eagle lunar lander, by taking a sip of wine and a bite of bread blessed by a Presbyterian minister back in Houston, just before taking their first steps on the moon.

In 2007, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, a Malaysian astronaut became the first practising Muslim to stay on the International Space Station and the Islamic National Fatwa Council of Malaysia issued special guidelines for him and other future Muslim astronauts.

The council also said that though his flight coincided with Ramadan, he can postpone until he returned to Earth or he could fast in accordance with the time zone of the place from which he had launched.

Among other religious observances that have taken place on board, include Christmas celebrations, Jewish holidays and Hanukkah.

Ramadan 2023: The month of Ramadan has dawned and it is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar, when Muslims around the world observe a fast, pray and introspect. Ramadan 2023: The month of Ramadan has dawned and it is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar, when Muslims around the world observe a fast, pray and introspect. This is said to be the month in which the first verses of the holy Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad by Allah. During the whole month, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk every day, abstaining from food and water. The fast is broken at sunset with a meal called Iftar. At this time family and friends come together and break their fast. But when is Ramadan starting? What are the Iftar timings? Check here for details. The holy month commemorates Muhammad's first revelation. It lasts for 29 to 30 days and is the month for charity and giving to those in need, meaning helping the poor and needy in the community. The end of Ramadan is marked by the festival of breaking the fast, Eid al-Fitr. When is Ramadan 2023 starting? Ramadan's new moon in 2023 will begin on March 21 at 17:30 GMT, with no sighting of any type being anticipated, Al Jazeera reported. It noted, "On the night of March 22, the new moon should be easily visible to the naked eye across many parts of the Middle East, North Africa, Western Europe and the America. The first fasting day is thus expected to be March 23 for those countries," adding that the new moon could be visible if the skies are clear across Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh, Iran and Pakistan. The media outlet further mentioned that for countries if the moon is sighted, the first day will also be March 23, if not, then the first day will be March 24. Emirati astronaut Sultan al-Neyadi, who is set to become the first Arab astronaut to spend six months in space, said Wednesday that he won't need to fast during Ramadan while in space. The 41-year-old will blast off for the International Space Station (ISS) next month aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

Neyadi, NASA's Stephen Bowen and Warren Hoburg and Russia's Andrey Fedyaev are scheduled to fly to the ISS on February 26 as members of SpaceX Dragon Crew-6.

When a reporter asked Sultan al-Neyadi how does he plan to observe the holy month of Ramadan in space, he said fasting won't be compulsory for him since his situation falls under an exception.

"I'm in... the definition of a traveler, and we can actually break fast," Neyadi said. "It's not compulsory."

"Actually fasting is not compulsory if you're... feeling not well," he said.

Breaking all records in the fruits sale, Jammu and Kashmir has been selling watermelons worth Rs 50 million (US $6,56,000 approx.) every day in the Kashmir valley during the month of Ramadan (which started on April 2 and will last till May 2)

According to the official data, more than 100 trucks carrying watermelon made a stoppage at the Fruit Mandi of Srinagar.

The produce is being brought from various Indian states, including Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

''We have been making watermelon sales worth Rs 50 million every day. In the month of Ramadan, it's very warm and the demand for this fruit increases a lot. This time of the year, the produce is mainly coming from Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra,'' said Bashir Ahmad, President, Fruit Mandi, Kashmir.

The Fruit Mandi has around 300 shops, of which 70 per cent of the shops have started dealing with watermelons, helping the sellers make a brisk business.

According to the officials, Kashmir is one of the biggest consumers of watermelon in the country. And since the produce is brought from far-flung states, the price goes up. Officials say the cost will come down once the produce starts coming from Punjab.

''The transportation cost of watermelon is steep. Kashmiris love watermelon and I think if we compare it across the country, most of the sale takes place in Kashmir alone,'' Ahmad said.

Saudi Arabia has released construction magnate Bakr bin Laden, more than three years after his detention in a purge of the kingdom's elite that upended his vast business empire, sources told AFP.

The former chairman of the Bin Laden Group, Saudi Arabia's biggest construction company, was reunited last week with his family in the Red Sea city of Jeddah after being freed from an undisclosed detention site, two people close to his family said.

It was unclear whether the release of Bakr, a tycoon in his 70s once seen as a major powerbroker, was provisional as his movements are still curtailed, one of the sources said.

"He was released and told to stay home," he said.

"People are allowed to visit him."

His family is "overjoyed", the second source said, adding they hoped his release was not a temporary goodwill gesture by the government towards the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Bakr, a half-brother of the late Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, was not reachable for comment and Saudi authorities did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment.

The Bin Laden family, branded as the Rockerfellers of Saudi Arabia for their sprawling infrastructure projects, reaped enormous wealth for decades on the back of their proximity to the Al Saud royal family.

But their fortunes tanked following the ascent of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has sought to remake the oil-reliant economy and dismantle top-down patronage networks that enriched a handful of elite families.

Bakr and two other siblings, Saad and Saleh, were snared in a November 2017 purge that saw hundreds of royals, tycoons and government ministers locked up for months in Riyadh's Ritz-Carlton hotel, then widely dubbed a five-star prison.

The unprecedented crackdown was described by the government as an anti-corruption measure, but was seen widely as a shakedown and power play by Prince Mohammed, the de facto ruler known by his acronym MBS.

Most detainees, including Saad and Saleh, were subsequently released after opaque financial "settlements" with the government.

But both brothers were barred from overseas travel and initially made to wear electronic ankle bracelets to track their movements, family sources said.

The government took management control of the debt-saddled Bin Laden group after acquiring the three brothers' collective 36.2 percent stake in the company, according to an official document seen by AFP.

Authorities also seized assets including private jets and luxury cars, the sources said.

But despite surrendering billions in assets and shares, Bakr was held in detention, with family sources saying authorities freed him temporarily once earlier in January 2019 so he could attend a family funeral.

Bakr was never put on trial despite his prolonged detention, one of the sources said, and no specific charges against him have been made public.
