'2.0' worldwide box office collection: Rajinikanth-Akshay Kumar’s film earns Rs 400 crore

Torrent website Tamilrockers.com has over the years hampered businesses of several Tamil films. Its latest target is Rajinikanth’s film ‘2.0’ which released on Friday across the world. The film has already found its way to the Internet and website is hosting all versions of ‘2.0’ but with a disclaimer to the audience to watch it on ‘3D in a cinema hall’.

Prior to the release of the film, the Madras high court had directed 37 internet service providers (ISPs) across the country to take steps and prevent the film from getting leaked online.

Tamilrockers had previously also hosted AR Murugadoss’ ‘Sarkar’ and Aamir Khan’s ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ as well. Days before the release of ‘2.0’, Tamilrockers had reportedly claimed on social media that they would be releasing the film on the day of its release as well. However, the administrators of the website have not owned up to the same. &nbsp;

They have though put up a message on their site that reads, “We are not available on Twitter or any other social networks. If someone posts anything using our name on social networks, then that should be fake. Please don’t believe on those kind of id’s and rumours spread by them.”

The original website has been blocked but the film has been made available via proxy servers.

Directed by Shankar, the film has got the biggest opening in India and earned Rs 75 crore on the first day of the release.

'2.0' Day 1 collection: Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar starrer record highest-opening of 2018

If it's a Rajinikanth film, it has to be big. The superstar's latest '2,0' is getting<a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/rajinikanth-akshay-starrer-20-headed-for-biggest-release-for-an-indian-movie-178897"> one of the biggest releases in recent times</a>. As it hits theatres across the world on Friday, trade analysts predict a record opening day for the film. It has already&nbsp;recorded a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/rajinikanths-20-gets-record-breaking-advance-booking-earns-a-whopping-rs-120-crore-178775">massive advance booking</a>, earning a whopping Rs 120 crore.&nbsp;

Speaking to a daily, trade analyst Girish Johar said '2.0' will have a mammoth opening at the ticket counters. “The trailer of 2.0 has increased the expectations of the audience who have been waiting for the film’s release for a very long time. With a fantastic director like Shankar, I don’t think the movie will falter even after the first day. Movie buffs in the South will go berserk as superstar Rajinikanth plays the lead role in the movie."&nbsp;

The fact that the film pits Rajinikanth against Akshay Kumar, who plays the antagonist, is also a big draw for the audience. Akshay Kumar is a superstar in North India and draws big numbers at the box office with his films. "A strong villain always pulls audience as they get involved in the film and start connecting to the hero because of the villain. So, Akshay’s villainous avatar in 2.0 is definitely something which cinephiles are looking forward to. Also, his popularity in the Hindi speaking belt will help the sci-fi film mint money at the box office. It has the potential of becoming Akshay’s non-holiday highest opener,” said Johar.

"The Hindi version of the film is expected to earn something between Rs 20-25 crore on the day of its release. If we consider all languages (Tamil and Telugu), the Rajinikanth starrer will touch Rs 100 crore (gross) mark on day one," Johar predicted.&nbsp;

The Madras High Court has directed 37 internet service providers (ISPs) to block over 12,000 websites that show pirated versions of Tamil films. The list includes more than 2,000 websites operated by ‘TamilRockers’. Justice M Sundar passed the order on Wednesday while allowing a plea moved by Lyca Productions Private Limited, that is the film’s producer.

Lyca’s counsel Vijayan Subramanian produced an extensive list of 12,564 illegal websites. The counsel put forth that when ‘TamilRockers’ website is blocked, it immediately creates mirror websites by changing an insignificant part of the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) or any other extension, and are therefore able to reinstate the infringing material with minimal effort.

The counsel then sought an injunction against all such websites.

Starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar in leading roles, the film is directed by Shankar and is releasing in more than five languages, including Mandarin in China.

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has filed a complaint against the makers of Rajinikanth starrer '2.0' &nbsp;and has demanded that the censor board revokes its certification for the film.&nbsp;

In a letter of complaint addressed to the censor board and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Association has alleged that director Shankar's film is promoting 'anti-scientific attitude.&nbsp;

'2.0' is based on the theme of how cellphones and radiation is not just affecting human beings but also the environment at large including birds and animals.&nbsp;

The COAI, whose members include Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, has alleged that the promotional videos are based on the theme that electromagnetic field emissions from mobile phones and towers are harmful to living creatures and the environment, including birds and human beings.

Such a depiction would create unfounded fear and mass paranoia by spreading misinformation about the adverse impact of mobile towers and mobile phones, the grouping said in a statement.

The content of the movie is "defamatory to COAI and its members, endangers public order, presents anti-scientific attitudes, constitutes offences including under various sections of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) and is in violation of the provisions of the Cinematograph Act, 1952," it added.

The association has also requested CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) to revoke the certificate issued for the teaser, trailer, promotional videos and the film with immediate effect. &nbsp;

The complaint states that the screening of the film should be stalled until their complaint is taken into cognisance and a resolution is determined.

'2.0' hits theatres in multiple languages across the country from Thursday onwards. The futuristic sci-fi has been witnessing enormous advance booking since Tuesday- when cinema halls started advance booking for the film. In many areas in the south, where Rajini's film release days are declared as unofficial holiday, tickets have been sold out for the first two days.&nbsp;

&nbsp;'2.0' is reportedly releasing in over 10,000 screens across the world.&nbsp;

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has filed a complaint against the makers of Rajinikanth starrer '2.0' and has demanded that the censor board revokes its certification for the film. In a letter of complaint addressed to the censor board and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Association has alleged that director Shankar's film is promoting 'anti-scientific attitude. '2.0' is based on the theme of how cellphones and radiation is not just affecting human beings but also the environment at large including birds and animals. The association has also requested CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) to revoke the certificate issued for the teaser, trailer, promotional videos and the film with immediate effect. The complaint states that the screening of the film should be stalled until their complaint is taken into cognisance and a resolution is determined. '2.0' hits theatres in multiple languages across the country from Thursday onwards. The futuristic sci-fi has been witnessing enormous advance booking since Tuesday- when cinema halls started advance booking for the film. In many areas in the south, where Rajini's film release days are declared as unofficial holiday, tickets have been sold out for the first two days. '2.0' is reportedly releasing in over 10,000 screens across the world.

Akshay Kumar's transformation in Shankar's '2.0' got everyone talking from day one. The actor, who will be seen in a negative avatar after a long time, revealed that how the entire process of dressing up for his role every day was a daunting task.&nbsp;

"It was really a hard process for me to get the prosthetics done. Three people used to work on my body and I had to stay patient... that was tough. I would say that the whole process of prosthetics made me a much calmer and patient person. I am already a patient person, but this made me more subtle and mellow at that time," Akshay was quoted as saying by a news agency.&nbsp;

"When I used to go back home, I knew that I have to do the same thing again tomorrow morning. The make-up was so hard and covered that it used to close all the pores of my body and during my entire six hours of working, my body sweat used to not come out. So in the end when they used to remove the prosthetic, I had the smell of sweat," added the actor.

While many of his fans were shocked to see Akshay's new avatar, the actor revealed that his daughter Nitara was quite excited to see her father in such a getup. "I clicked a lot of selfies with my family. My wife and daughter were there with me. My daughter was quite excited to see me in the look and she was not scared at all... because she saw that some people are putting something on her father's face. She was fine," the actor said.&nbsp;

A sequel to 'Robot', '2.0' stars Rajinikanth, Amy Jackson and Adil Hussain along with Akshay Kumar. The film will be releasing on 29th November.&nbsp;

With just a few days left before Rajinikanth's mammoth '2.0' hits the screens, the excitement to watch Rajini and Akshay Kumar in a completely new avatar is super high. Akshay, in his debut appearance in Tamil cinema, plays the antagonist and his look- from what people have seen in the trailer- has already created a lot of buzz.&nbsp;

Interestingly, Akshay was not the first choice for the role. Director Shankar, in an interview to a news agency, has revealed that Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger was his first choice for the antagonist's role.&nbsp;

"We had thought of casting Arnold. We had talked and allotted dates also. But somehow things did not work out as the contracts of Hollywood and India are contradictory. So we thought of looking at a good cast from the Indian film industry," Shankar said at a press conference in Mumbai.&nbsp;The director said Lyca (producers of 2.0) and Akshay were in talks for a remake of a film called 'Kathi' in Hindi.

"Everyone told me to consider Akshay and I also thought it would be nice. I narrated the story to him and he said yes," the director said.

Shankar is confident that the film would connect with everyone as it has an international theme. The technology, he said, was better than the previous film and it was the reason they decided to title the film '2.0'.&nbsp;

Rajinikanth will be back in the role of 'Chitti' in the second instalment of the mega-hit 'Robot', which is slated to be released on November 29.&nbsp;

“2.0” also stars Akshay Kumar, Amy Jackson, Adil Hussain and Sudhanshu Pandey in important roles.

The film, which also marks Akshay’s Tamil debut, sees him in the role of an antagonist, Dr. Richard/Crowman. While Rajini will reprise his role of Dr. Vaseegaran/Chitti from the original.

"2.0" was supposed to release on Diwali 2017, was pushed to&nbsp;January 2018 release owing to pending VFX work and was then finally shifted to April when the makers failed to meet the deadline.

At US $75 million, 2.0 is more expensive than several successful Hollywood VFX classics. Deadpool (2016) had originally cost only US $58 million.&nbsp;

Even X-Men (2000) was made in US $75 million and Batman (1989) in US $35 million.

Akshay Kumar pointed in a recent Instagram post that the film is the result of hard work and the blood and sweat of over 3000 technicians who have put their best to make this film the best ever in Indian cinema.

'Kaala' becomes first Indian film to release in Saudi Arabia

Days after the much-hyped release of Rajinikanth starrer 'Kaala,' AIADMK senior leader and Tamil Nadu Minister D Jayakumar today said a movie's success does not guarantee success in politics.

"Nobody can be accepted as a leader..Only on the basis of the success of a movie," he told reporters here.

With the Tamil superstar's June 7 movie release in over 2,000 screens worldwide witnessing impressive openings, according to the flick's publicist, Jayakumar said a person is recognised only for his welfare work for the public.

"People accept a person as a leader, based on the policies and goals and for the work done by being on their side," he said, without naming anyone while answering a question over stars and their entry into politics.

"This is the yardstick and there is nothing else," he said, adding fans decide the success of a movie, which has got nothing to do with politics.

'Kaala', that shines light on the struggles of the oppressed people to secure their rights, is viewed by the actor's fans as giving him a better foothold when he enters politics.

The Minister's remark assumes significance not only because of Rajinikanth's fans' high hopes from Kaala, but also over top actor Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam 2's release expectations, the production of which was already over.

Haasan, who launched his political party Makkal Needhi Maiam in February this year, is set to release the trailer for Vishwaroopam 2, a sequel to Vishwaroopam, on June 11.

The spy thriller is produced in Tamil, Hindi and dubbed in Telugu.

Kaala has hit 650 screens in Tamil Nadu, 600 in Andhra Pradesh, 243 in neighbouring Kerala and 126 in Karnataka, where the movie saw a delayed release due to protests and 1,000 overseas releases, the publicist told PTI.

Notably, it was the AIADMK which backed Rajinikanth recently for his "graveyard" and "anti-socials" remark after visiting the injured in Tuticorin anti-Sterlite violence.

The actor, who had last year announced that he would float a political party, said anti-social elements had infiltrated the protest by locals demanding closure of Sterlite's copper smelter unit in the southern port town.

He had also remarked that too many protests would turn Tamil Nadu into a 'graveyard.'

Violence and police firing on May 22 and 23 resulted in the deaths of 13 persons.

The ruling AIADMK, apart from this issue, has been quite critical of the actor on other matters.

AIADMK mouthpiece "Namathu Puratchi Thalaivi Amma" had days ago pointed out that the actor had praised late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for dealing with anti-social elements with an "iron fist."

"Superstar Rajinikanth has spoken frankly with conscience... He has endorsed Chief Minister K Palaniswami's statement that anti-social elements had infiltrated the protesters,"it said,adding the actor's remarks were "welcome."

DMK and other opposition parties in Tamil Nadu, however, had lashed out at Rajinikanth for his anti-socials comment.

'Kaala' cannot fix Rajinikanth's political win, taunts AIADMK

Rajinikanth latest screen venture 'Kaala'&nbsp;garnered lukewarm response in terms of initial bookings, unlike the actor's previous films but trade analysts are hopeful that the film will do good business over the weekend.
As early reviews poured in, critics too seemed unimpressed with the Pa Ranjith's much-awaited film, whose screen counts is less than their previous collaboration, 'Kabali'.

City-based trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai expects a good opening for the film which, according to him, will milk the age-old adage of "any publicity is good publicity". He, however, predicted that the numbers will be no match to 2016's ' Kabali'.

"I think it will open good in Tamil Nadu because of the controversies surrounding the film. But I can't pinpoint numbers at the moment. Although the advance booking was not very good, the state government's special permission to conduct morning shows have helped. It is expected to do well since it is a Rajinikanth movie but it will not take a massive opening," Pillai told PTI.&nbsp;

Till noon, some of the online portals showed availability of tickets, an anomaly for a Thalaivar's film as they are usually sold-out for the first two weeks in advance.

The actor, who has announced his plan to enter active politics, has found himself in a tough spot with his comments on Cauvery water, leading to a demand for a ban of the film in the state by pro-Karnataka bodies and the state's film federation.&nbsp;

Chennai-based trade expert Kaushik LM said 'Kaala'&nbsp;will outshine 'Kabali'&nbsp;over time.&nbsp;

"Currently, the tracking suggests that the film may slightly fall behind the opening record of Vijay's 'Mersal' here since 'Kaala' has released on a non-festival day. But in the long run, I'm expecting 'Kaala' to beat this film's numbers in Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;

"Salman Khan-fronted 'Race 3' will not have a big impact in the state next week, and 'Kaala' is expected to hold a good number of screens until next week for sure," he told PTI.

Kaushik says breaching the Rs 100 crore-mark in Tamil Nadu will be a challenging feat but the state's distributors feel secure as major areas have scored a decent advance booking.

"The Tamil Nadu rights for the film are valued at around Rs 62 crores... Except for a few territories which are distributed on MG (Minimum-Guarantee) basis, all the other areas in Tamil Nadu have been sold an advance commission basis, which is a safe bet for exhibitors.

According to Deepak, a trade analyst who tracks box office in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the future of 'Kaala' appears dark as the story, which centres around the Tamil revolution in the slums of Dharavi, is bound to have a jarring effect on the Telugu-speaking audiences.

"The audience response in the Telugu states is quite average, and the box-office opening is very dull. The makers are releasing the film through producer NV Prasad on a commission basis, which means they will recover whatever they receive from exhibitors. "The film's rights were not sold to anyone even when the makers received an offer for Rs 33 crores here. The low-key promos are one of the reasons for the flat response here. The plot of the movie revolves around the uprising of Tamils, and there is a definite disconnect among Telugu audiences," he said.

The film, however, is nothing less than an event for Rajinikanth's devoted fan following, who were in theatres whether they agree with their star's politics or not.

In another feat for the film, 'Kaala'&nbsp; became the first Indian film to release in Saudi Arabia, after the country lifted the ban on cinema viewing in public.

Distributor Home Screen Entertainment took to Twitter to confirm the news.

"Proud to share that we at HomeScreenEntertainment and @GCinama, in association with @voxcinemas, have just made history! We've released the FIRST ever Indian film in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - None other than our very own Thalaivar's #Kaala @LycaProductions @wunderbarfilms," the tweet from their account read.&nbsp;

Kaala: Despite lukewarm opening, trade analysts hopeful about Rajini magic

Rajinikanth's Kaala did release in Karnataka on Thursday but only in select theaters and amid heavy security. Fear of vandalism overtook a high court order and most theaters preferred not to screen the film across the state.

About 6,000 police personnel were posted on security duty at theatres in Bengaluru, media reports stated. Despite the security, no one scheduled a morning show of the film, leaving hundreds of fans disappointed and angry.

Inox, in Bengaluru, screened the first show of the film in the afternoon. Inox staffers revealed that the shows “ran to a full house” and the audience “enjoyed the film”.&nbsp;

But fear of vandalism and unnecessary hassle kept a lot of moviegoers away from the film.&nbsp;

"It is disappointing that there were no morning shows, but theatres began screening the film in the afternoon. By end of day, we had about 50 screens and we are confident of another 125 screens showing it from tomorrow (Friday) morning," a film distributor was quoted as saying.

Single screen exhibitors did not screen the film even in the evening show fearing vandalism inside the theaters.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) continued to claim that it had not ordered “a ban on the film”.

Hundreds of fans of the superstar were left disappointed as they gathered outside cinema halls after the High Court order to catch 'Kaala' only to be told that the shows had been cancelled.&nbsp;

Pro-Kannada groups had demanded a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/entertainment-rajini-starrer-kaala-makers-move-karnataka-high-court--142280">ban on the film's release </a>in the state last week after Rajinikanth made a comment on their Cauvery issue.
