Bollywood star Aamir Khan a big fan of Rajinikanth, wants to watch 'Kaala'

After much<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/entertainment-supreme-court-refuses-to-stall-release-of-rajinikanth-starrer-kaala-to-hit-screen-tomorrow-142548"> tension</a> around the release of Rajinikanth’s film Kaala, the film opened to an underwhelming response in India. It is, in fact, one of the lowest-recorded openings in recent times for a Rajinikanth starrer.

Actor-activist Vishal Krishna who heads the Tamil Nadu Films Producers' Council (TFPC) says it's too early to make any predictions. He said, "'Kaala'&nbsp;has been unnecessarily embroiled in the Cauvery controversy. How much this has affected the film's opening, I don't know. What I do know is that at the end of the day Rajini sir is Rajini sir.”

He added, "Any film of his evokes a massive response. The opening of 'Kaala' may be on the lower side -- I haven't found the time to check -- because his last film with the same director (Pa. Ranjith) had not been appreciated that much."

Vishal was also quick to add that Rajinikanth has the potential to surprise. He said, "Rajini Sir's fan club is stronger than ever. And I am a member. They will ensure a smooth run for Kaala. Let's not forget, this is the Ramzan week and a sizable chunk of the audience likes to refrain from watching films during this period even if it is Rajini Sir's film. I intend to see 'Kaala'&nbsp;the soonest possible."

Trade analyst Atul Mohan also added to the speculation as he said that the film garnered response below expected even though it includes known faces of the Hindi film industry like Nana Patekar, Huma Qureshi and Pankaj Tripathi. He said, "This may be due to some of the factors like a couple of postponements in release date, Ramzan period, particularly the week before Eid which is dullest for business, as next Friday the big film of Salman Khan releases. Rajinikanth is still a huge craze as the character Chitti of 'Robot' and fans are waiting for the sequel '2.0' .

"Also his last few films haven't done well. The promos of 'Kaala' haven't established a connect with Hindi audiences. It looks like a 1990s' film. But we hope they have some great story to be shared which may be liked and the film does well," said Atul.&nbsp;

'Kaala' records lowest-ever opening for Rajinikanth film

Rajinikanth's Kaala becomes the first Indian film to release in Saudi Arabia post the nation lifted the ban on cinema.&nbsp;

Kaala’s worldwide release today was marked by a lot of firsts apart from Saudi’s release as Indian fans geared up since the night to watch their <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/entertainment-fans-excited-before-kaalas-release-142747">favourite superstar</a> 'Thalaiva'&nbsp;on screen. Many even posed with a 67-feet tall poster of Thalaivar as Rajinikanth is 67 years old in real life. Some served milk in front of the poster as a mark of respect and bringing in a new start. The custom is usually seen in temples when devotees serve milk and ghee to statues of Gods.&nbsp;

Over 50 women, dressed in traditional south Indian yellow sari, walked from a temple to the theatre to show their devotion for the actor.&nbsp;

While many fans geared up for the release in India, the film, however, failed to create its usual magic on the big screen as Kaala recorded the worst opening for any Rajinikanth’s film.&nbsp;

Kaala has been embroiled in controversy as Rajinikanth’s statement on Cauvery water issue was not taken lightly by pro-Kannada outfits that threatened to not let theatres show Kaala. Rajinikanth's 'Kaala' becomes first Indian film to release in Saudi Arabia after it lifts ban on cinema

Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to stall the release of Rajinikanth starrer&nbsp;"Kaala"&nbsp;that has been ridden with controversy ever since pro-Kannada outfits got miffed with the superstar’s reported remarks on the Cauvery row.&nbsp;

The film is scheduled to hit screens tomorrow.&nbsp;

Bringing good news for the makers of the film, the Karnataka High Court directed the state government to provide the necessary security for the film’s peaceful release after threats against the same rose in number.&nbsp;

Pro-Kannada outfits had vehemently opposed the release of the film in Karnataka after Rajinikanth stated that whichever government comes to power in the state should implement the Supreme Court order on Cauvery water sharing. This led to the Karnataka Film Chambers of Commerce (KFCC) deciding on May 29 to not allow screening of "Kaala".&nbsp;

KFCC president Sa Ra Govindu had announced, "A decision has been taken that Rajinikanth's movie will neither be distributed nor screened anywhere in Karnataka."

The groups also requested Karnataka’s Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy to ban "Kaala"&nbsp;following Rajinikanth's alleged views on the Cauvery dispute. They threatened to vandalise theatres if the screening of the film happens tomorrow.&nbsp;

Seeing the tense atmosphere in the state, Kumaraswamy had also backed deferring the release of "Kaala"&nbsp;in Karnataka, however, he said that the government would implement the directions of the Karnataka High Court for the&nbsp;smooth release of the film.&nbsp;

He said, “As the state government, I have to implement the directions of the high court. That I will take care of. It is my responsibility also. We will have to follow the high court direction.”

Kumaraswamy, however, stated his apprehensions and said, “According to my observation as an individual, not a chief minister, as a Kannaidaga…I request the producer or distributor of the movie, in this kind of atmosphere, it is not good on their part to release the movie.”

On Tuesday, Kamal met the newly-appointed Karnataka Chief Minister Kumaraswamy in Bengaluru to discuss several issues concerning the ties between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The Cauvery water-sharing issue was top on the agenda.

Post their closed-door meeting, both the CM and Kamal displayed a certain rapport at the media briefing. But when they were questioned on Kaala and debate around its release, both dismissed it. While Kumaraswamy claimed, “It was a different issue and not necessary”, Kamal affirmed with, “Not a word was spoken about that.”

Like farmers' issues need a conversation, so do films: Kamal Haasan

One of the most anticipated films of this season is Rajinikanth's 'Kaala'. Directed by Pa. Ranjith, the film is slated to release in theaters on June 7th. According to media reports, the film has already earned Rs 230 crores prior to its release through its theatrical and musical rights. The earning is exclusive of collections from <a href="http://www.wionews.com/videos/all-that-you-need-to-know-about-kaala-controversy-in-karnataka-142420">Karnataka region where the film may not release.&nbsp;</a>

According to a report in Andhra box office, the film has collected Rs 70 crore in Tamil Nadu itself.

In Andhra Pradesh and Nizam regions, the film has collected Rs 33 crore, in Kerala Rs 10 crore and the rest of the country Rs 7 crore. The overseas theatrical rights have been sold at Rs 45 crores. The broadcast rights and music rights have brought in Rs 70 crore and Rs 5 crore respectively.

Trade pundits feel the film needs to collect Rs 280 crore gross to be called a blockbuster hit, and this is inclusive of the Telugu and Hindi dubbed versions. If the film manages to release in Karnataka, they would have to earn a gross of Rs 300 crore.

The figures are achievable considering that superstar is a crowd puller and release day of his films are considered as unofficial holidays in many parts of south India.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, 'Kaala' producers Dhanush and his Aishwarya<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/entertainment-rajini-starrer-kaala-makers-move-karnataka-high-court--142280"> have filed a petition at Karnataka High Court </a>seeking directions to the state government and Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) for the smooth release of the film.

In the plea, Dhanush, who is Rajinikanth’s son-in-law, submitted that it is the fundamental right of the petitioners under the Constitution to exhibit the film.

Trade pundits feel the film needs to collect Rs 280 crore gross to be called a blockbuster hit, and this is inclusive of the Telugu and Hindi dubbed versions. If the film manages to release in Karnataka, they would have to earn a gross of Rs 300 crore. The figures are achievable considering that superstar is a crowd puller and release day of his films are considered as unofficial holidays in many parts of south India. Meanwhile, 'Kaala' producers Dhanush and his Aishwarya have filed a petition at Karnataka High Court seeking directions to the state government and Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) for the smooth release of the film. In the plea, Dhanush, who is Rajinikanth’s son-in-law, submitted that it is the fundamental right of the petitioners under the Constitution to exhibit the film.

Rajinikanth's 'Kaala' has already earned Rs 230 crore before its release. Here's how

Prakash Raj slammed pro-Kannada groups for calling for a ban on Rajinikanth's new film Kaala. The actor took to Twitter to express his discontentment over the film's ban in the state. Kaala is scheduled to release in theaters this week.&nbsp;

“There is a deep bond between man and a river. So when we talk of Cauvery we do extremely emotional about it. This is true of people from both states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu where emotions run high when we try to find a solution to share water. But getting emotional does not solve an issue we need to be practical about it too, ” the actor said in a statement posted on his Twitter account.

“The two respective state governments, the Centre along with specialists who understand the issue of our farmers, water sharing and nature, should sit together and find a solution. Due to political reasons and unseen pressures if they fail to do so, our fight should be towards making them accountable and answerable and not become victims of our own emotions, ” he added.
Sharing Rajinikanth's remark on the Cauvery issue, Prakash Raj stated that the banning of Rajini's film was not the right way to express anger.&nbsp;

If you resort to protest for each and everything Tamil Nadu will turn into 'cemetery': Rajinikanth

Rajinikanth’s “Kaala” has now gotten embroiled in a controversy as the film was announced banned yesterday in Karnataka. The decision came as a shock to many and mostly the Thalaiva himself who was taken aback.&nbsp;

The superstar, when asked for the reason behind this ban said he was clueless. Talking to the media while leaving for Tuticorin which is engulfed with violence since several days, Rajinikanth said, “I don’t know the reason for that (film being banned). I only came to know about it yesterday.”

He also added that hoped that the South Indian Film Chamber will step in and take all the necessary steps in the matter and help him release "Kaala"&nbsp;in Karnataka.

For those who are unaware, the movie has been banned in Karnataka after Rajinikanth took a controversial stand which was against the state during the Cauvery issue. During the ongoing Cauvery issue, Rajinikanth had mentioned, “Centre will face Tamil Nadu wrath if it fails to set up CMB (Cauvery Management Board) plunge.” This did not go down well with the people of Karnataka and hence, the Karnataka Film Chambers of Commerce (KFCC) has decided to ban the movie.

The President of the KFCC, G. Parameshwara, mentioned to the media, “As an actor, he always handled issues on Cauvery in a diplomatic way. But when he entered politics and formed a party, he made a direct attack on us, which has not gone down well with Karnataka. It is a question of our prestige and we want to keep our word. We will not allow his film to be released here.”

Rajinikanth's 'Kaala' has been making the right kind of noise ever since the makers released its trailer.

Reacting to actor-politician Rajinikanth's comments on the release of Cauvery water by Karnataka to Tamil Nadu, JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy called him to visit the state and see the situation for himself, after which he would change his stand.

"If there is water in Karnataka it is possible for us to give them water. I request Rajinikanth, please come and see the situation in our dams, what has happened to our farmers. After seeing that, if you (Rajinikanth) still want water, let's discuss," PTI quoted Kumaraswamy as saying.

He was responding to a question about the reported statement by the actor-politician in Chennai asking the new government in Karnataka to release to Tamil Nadu its share of Cauvery river water as mandated by the Supreme Court verdict.

"... On seeing the situation here, I think he (Rajinikanth) will change his stand," the JD(S) leader told reporters here.

Rajinikanth on Sunday said that Karnataka government should implement Supreme Court says and added that it is their (Karnataka’s) duty.

“It is my humble opinion that it will be good if the control over the dams (in Karnataka) is with the (proposed) Cauvery authority,” he said.

Anticipating “government intervention” in the authority that has been mooted, he said, “Let us see what happens in due course.”

Kumaraswamy is all set to take over as the Karnataka Chief Minister on May 23.

As the leader of Congress-JD(S) joint legislature party, he was yesterday invited by Governor Vajubhai Vala to form the government, following the fall of three-day-old BJP government with the resignation of B S Yeddyurappa as Chief Minister.&nbsp

Kumaraswamy attacks Rajinikanth over comments on Cauvery issue

Actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth on Sunday hailed the turn of events in the Karnataka assembly, terming them a "win for democracy".

He also criticised the 15-day time given to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala to prove majority on the floor of the house as "mockery of democracy."

Addressing reporters after meeting the women’s wing of his Rajini Makkal Mandram, the actor termed the subsequent developments in Karnataka, wherein BS Yeddyurappa resigned as CM without a floor test, as a “win for democracy”. BJP asking for some more time and Governor giving 15 days time was a mockery of democracy. I would like to thank Supreme Court for its order, which upheld the democracy," Rajinikanth said.&nbsp;

Further, on contesting elections in 2019, the Tamil superstar said the decision will be taken after the elections are announced.

"The decision for contesting elections in 2019 will be taken at the time when the elections are announced. The party is not yet launched, but we are ready for anything. Also, it is too early to talk about any kind of alliance," he added.

Yesterday, the Karnataka government led by BS&nbsp;Yeddyurappa resigned before going in for the floor test in the Vidhan Soudha.

The floor test was to be conducted on the instructions of the Vala after the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) alliance also claimed the right to form the government in the state on the basis of the 117 seats it had as compared to the 104 seats that the BJP had.

On Friday, while hearing a petition of the Congress-JD(S) alliance, the Supreme Court reduced the 15-day original time given by Governor Vala to the BJP to prove its majority in the house and asked the party to hold the trust vote on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Giving 15 days to BJP to prove majority was 'mockery of democracy': Rajnikanth on Karnataka imbroglio

Reflecting on his failures in the last few years, superstar Rajinikanth said critics have tried to write him off over time but he has come back stronger every time.

The 67-year-old actor said his films such as daughter Soundarya's motion-capture 'Kochaidaiyaan' and KS Ravikumar's 'Lingaa' did not work at the box office.

Rajinikanth said he was wary of 'Kochadaiyaan' failure after watching the film's final version.

"Soundarya is a genius. Working with intelligent people is easy. But, we should be careful with geniuses. She listed out a post-production budget to enhance the film's final version. But, I was sure that this film wouldn't be successful. So, I insisted on releasing the film with the same version," he told reporters yesterday.

The actor was speaking at the audio launch of his upcoming film 'Kaala'. Santhosh Narayanan has composed the music.

About "Lingaa", Rajinikanth said that he agreed to do the film as the subplot of interlinking rivers was a dream come true on-screen.

"I agreed to the story because the main story revolved around building a dam and interlinking of rivers was also a subplot. Interlinking of rivers is my lifetime dream, so I gave my nod immediately. However, the film flunked at the box-office. Critics, in no time, wrote me off. They have been doing that for 40 years of my career. But, I bounced back every single time," he said.

The actor said it was Soundarya who introduced him to director Pa Ranjith. They first collaborated on 'Kabali' in 2016.

"I instantly liked him when I met him for the first time for 'Kabali'. But, when he narrated the story, I was sceptical about the sluggishly-paced screenplay and asked my producer Thanu to watch the film. He was jumping with joy after listening to the story. So, I nodded, and the film emerged a success."

Rajinikanth revealed that it was he who suggested the idea of 'Kaala' to Ranjith.&nbsp;

"First, I listened to a script from Vetrimaaran ('Visaaranai' director). He narrated a fantastic script, but it was politically-driven. I was not planning to make my political foray then. So, I wanted to do a different film. Then, I called Ranjith and told him about the slums in Dharavi and the Tamil population who are residing there for years."

The actor, who announced his political plunge on New Year's eve, clarified that the film is not political in nature.

"I warned Ranjith that 'Kaala' should be a Rajinikanth film in Ranjith's style unlike 'Kabali' which was a Ranjith movie. There's politics in 'Kaala' but it's not a political drama. Ranjith is a great human being who cares for his community and his people a lot."

The actor said the director camped in Dharavi slums for weeks to do research on the film.

Rajinikanth also praised his "Kaala" co-star Nana Patekar, comparing his performance to his powerful on-screen adversaries Raghuvaran and Ramya Krishnan.

"In my entire career, only two actors challenged me as villain in my films. One is Raghuvaran's character of Mark Antony in 'Baasha' and Ramya Krishnan's portrayal of Neelambari in 'Padaiyappa.' Now, Nana Patekar has done a great job. I was thrilled by his performance and thoroughly enjoyed it," he said.

About the impending announcement on the name and other details of his political party, Rajinikanth said the date is yet to arrive and "good days" are not far off for Tamil Nadu.

Ranjith said 'Kaala' would be a memorable film for those who have faced discrimination.

"'Kaala' is a film for the people and of the people. It will be an important film in Indian cinema which talks about inequality," he said.&nbsp;

Produced by Dhanush's Wunderbar Films, the film also features Huma Qureshi, Anjali Patil, Samuthirakani and Pankaj Tripathi.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Chennai, actor Kamal Haasan released a video on Twitter where he sought justice for Tamil Nadu on the Cauvery issue.

"People of Tamil Nadu are fighting for justice. Justice has been given but it is not being executed. People have started to believe that this delay is due to Karnataka elections, and your interest in it. I want this belief to be dispelled for people are more important than elections," Haasan said in his video.

"With your previous experiment with Narmada Water Authority, you could easily deliver the justice that Tamil Nadu is asking," Haasan said. "Please do justice with Tamil Nadu and Karnataka," he added in nearly 2-minute-long video.

Since April 1, the state has been witnessing protests by political parties, pro-Tamil outfits, student groups and voluntary organisations seeking setting up of the Cauvery Management Board.

Last week, Tamil superstar Rajinikanth had said that Centre would <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/cauvery-row-rajinikanth-says-centre-will-earn-tamil-nadus-wrath-if-it-drags-feet-galaxy-of-actors-at-protest-129097">earn the wrath of Tamil Nadu people</a> if it fails to constitute the Cauvery Management Board on an urgent basis. Rajinikanth, along with other actors like Kamal Haasan, Dhanush, Vijay, Surya, Sathyaraj, Sivakumar, Nassar, Vishal, Karthi and Sivakarthikeyan took part in a day-long protest over demand for formation of the board.

The ongoing protests over the issue have led the shifting of <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/cauvery-protests-all-matches-moved-out-of-chennai-confirms-ipl-chairman-129912">Indian Premier League matches out of Chennai</a> due to security reasons. Three policemen are attacked during an anti-IPL protest over the Cauvery issue on Wednesday after which the decision was taken to move all the matches from Chennai to Pune.

On February 16, the Supreme Court had raised the 270 tmcft share of Cauvery water for Karnataka by 14.75 tmcft and reduced Tamil Nadu's share while compensating it by allowing extraction of 10 tmcft groundwater from the river basin.

The court had granted six weeks time to the Centre to formulate a scheme to ensure compliance of its 465-page judgement on the decades-old Cauvery dispute, which modified the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award of 2007.

The six-week period ended on March 29.

Since April 1, the state has been witnessing protests by political parties, pro-Tamil outfits, student groups and voluntary organisations seeking setting up of the Cauvery Management Board.

Cauvery row: Protests outside Chidambaram stadium in Chennai against IPL match today

Amidst the battle between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/cauvery-row-rajinikanth-says-centre-will-earn-tamil-nadus-wrath-if-it-drags-feet-galaxy-of-actors-at-protest-129097">Cauvery issue</a>, actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth said that it is important to focus on the Cauvery matter rather than the cricket IPL.&nbsp;

Stating that it is "embarrassing"&nbsp;to hold Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in Chennai, while the state is grappling with Cauvery row, Rajinikanth said that it would be better if the matches are not played in Chennai and be more <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/cauvery-management-board-protest-tamil-nadu-farmers-bury-themselves-in-sand-128807">sensitive to the farmers</a>&nbsp;hit with severe shortage of water.&nbsp;

Calling the setting up of Cauvery Management Board a fair demand, Rajinikanth said that that the Centre should pay it immediate attention. “I’d like to tell the Centre that, what every Tamilan unanimously wants is CBM. If you don’t set up the board at the earliest, you will be subjected to the anger and disappointment of every Tamilan,” Rajinikanth said.

He also said people from different walks of life have been protesting across Tamil Nadu for the welfare of poor farmers.

“To many, it’s unclear who we are protesting for. We are not protesting for the benefits of rich farmers with hundreds of acres of land. We are doing it for poor farmers whose livelihood depends on the farm produce they make from a piece of land they own,” he said adding that even though Karnataka’s politicians might not understand the agony, the poor farmers of Karnataka will.

I don't want to answer political questions: Rajinikanth

They were known to be friends and superstar Rajinikanth had expressed shock when the news of Sridevi&#39;s demise came. The actor had even flown down to Mumbai to offer his last respects to the Kapoor family even before Sridevi&#39;s mortal remains were brought back to India from Dubai.

Which is why when the Kapoor family organised a prayer meeting in honour of the late actress, it was surprising to see Rajinikanth giving it a miss. His wife, Latha, did attend but the superstar was conspicuous by his absence.&nbsp;

Turns out the actor could not attend the meeting as he is in the Himalayas on a spiritual trip. The actor left for the trip on Friday and hence had to skip Sridevi&#39;s prayer meeting.&nbsp;

Why Rajinikanth did not attend Sridevi's prayer meeting in Chennai

Actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth is currently on his annual spiritual journey to the Himalayas. He arrived in Jammu on Sunday and said that he will not engage in any political conversations or interactions during this period.&nbsp;

&quot;I am a spiritual person. From here I will go to Rishikesh. When I will enter the politics, I will answer all the political questions.&quot; the mega-star told media at Shivkhori, Jammu.&nbsp;

Rajinikanth will later head to Rishikesh. He was also spotted at Mahavtar Baba Ashram meditation centre in a remote village of Kandabari.

&quot;Spiritualism is all about serving \people. I am entering politics to serve people. My politics will basically be spiritual,&quot; Rajinikanth told the media here.

&quot;I have worked for 43 years in the film industry, but basically I am a spiritual person,&quot; he added.

The 67-year-old Thalaivar earlier announced the launch of his political party that would contest all 234 constituencies in the next Tamil Nadu assembly elections in 2021.&nbsp;
