India: Delhi breaks 101-year-old record with highest rain in December

A cold wave has gripped much of north India with dense fog and snowfall in the hills, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted rainfall in southern states on Tuesday (Dec 24). Meanwhile, the national capital Delhi’s air quality remained in the “severe” category.

The IMD has forecast clear skies and cool temperatures on Tuesday (Dec 24) in Delhi, with fog or smog expected in early morning. The temperatures are likely to range between 11 degrees Celsius and 19 degrees Celsius.

Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) meanwhile has not improved despite light rain the day before. On Monday (Dec 23), the 24-hour average AQI was recorded at 406 as the air pollution crisis continues, posing health risks for residents.

The lack of favourable winds and cold wave conditions have resulted in a blanket of hazardous smog over Delhi and nearby regions.

<h2>Cold wave in north India</h2>

Cold wave conditions are also predicted in other north Indian regions including Uttar Pradesh Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.

Several trains have been delayed due to dense fog and passengers are advised to check the status before reaching the stations to avoid any inconvenience.

High-altitude regions of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are experiencing snowfall, attracting tourists.

However, the situation in Himachal Pradesh’s Manali turned worse when over 1,000 vehicles were stuck in long jams between Solang and Atal Tunnel, Rohtang amid a snowstorm, prompting a rescue operation to evacuate around 700,000 tourists.

The evolving weather system off the Bay of Bengal is expected to move towards Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu coasts during the next 24 hours, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday (Dec 11). As the weather system moves north, northwestwards in the coming days, it is expected to bring heavy (7-11 cms) to very heavy rain (12-20 cms) in 28 districts of Tamil Nadu, and the adjoining Union Territory of Puducherry. In meteorology, a low-pressure area is associated with rainfall, stormy weather, rough sea conditions, and gusty winds.

Similarly, a Yellow alert for heavy rain has been issued for Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Villuppuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur districts of Tamil Nadu.

For Thursday&nbsp;(Dec 12), an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain has been issued for isolated places over Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Pudukkottai districts of Tamilnadu.

Further, a yellow alert for heavy rain issued for isolated places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Karur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi districts of Tamilnadu, and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

As per the IMD, the impact of this weather system could continue to bring rainfall across parts of Tamil Nadu, over the next five days.

Owing to rough sea conditions and gusty winds, the IMD has advised fishermen against fishing along the Tamil Nadu coast.

This weather system and the rainfall alert came barely 10 days after the impact of Cyclone Fengal, which claimed 19 lives across Sri Lanka and Southern India. The October-December period is the Northeast monsoon season which brings rains to India's eastern coastal states such as Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha.

By the end of September, some parts of the Sahara Desert would have&nbsp;received five times the average rainfall it gets during the month. Some areas of North Africa have been experiencing too much precipitation because of which its usually arid landscape is getting flooded, reported&nbsp;Live Science.

The region does receive rainfall, however, the amount&nbsp;of it is generally a few inches of rain every year, as per the NASA Earth Observatory.&nbsp;

This is an instrument aboard two satellites which can capture the imagery of the entire surface of Earth every one to two days.

While comparing the satellite images, an increase in water in the region was observed after the thunderstorms. Different shades of blue were seen depending on the depth of the water and vegetation appeared green.

NASA Earth Observatory further reported that water was filled in one of the normally dry lakes in the Sahara Desert as per the satellite images.&nbsp;

<h2>Why is the Sahara Desert receiving heavy rainfall?</h2>

According to some scientists, the heavy rainfall in the Sahara Desert has been triggered by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).

The air from the Northern and Southern hemispheres meet in the ITCZ which is a belt close to the equator and can carry storms. This ITCZ has shifted towards the northern Sahara this year and triggered rainfall as per the scientists.

Meanwhile, other experts have said that the water in the North Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea has turned warmer than usual which may have caused the rainfall, reported the outlet and added that it is possible for Sahara to continue receiving more rainfall in the future.

According to NASA's report, more than 38,000 incidents of extreme rainfall have happened over the Sahara, since the time weather records have been&nbsp;maintained. Nearly 30 per cent of that rainfall was received during the summers and some were associated with&nbsp;extratropical cyclones.

Meanwhile, other experts have said that the water in the North Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea has turned warmer than usual which may have caused the rainfall, reported the outlet and added that it is possible for Sahara to continue receiving more rainfall in the future. According to NASA's report, more than 38,000 incidents of extreme rainfall have happened over the Sahara, since the time weather records have been maintained. On Tuesday morning, the hill slid and came down, turning the power station into debris.&nbsp;

The power station was evacuated a few days ago because of the multiple landslides occurring in that area, as reported by NDTV. Therefore, no casualties have been reported after the incident. This incident took place in Balutar, near Dipu Drak, East Sikkim.&nbsp;

This was the highest rainfall received in India's national capital in the last 88 years.&nbsp;

The Indian Meteorological Department said that from 8:30 am on Thursday (June 27) to 8:30 am on Friday (June 28) Delhi received 228 mm of rainfall, which marked the highest 24-hour rainfall in June in the national capital since 1936&nbsp;when 235.5 mm of rainfall was recorded.

The MET department said that&nbsp;IMD's Safdarjung airport observatory&nbsp;recorded 234.5mm rainfall between June 1 to June 28, which is the third highest in the last 124 years.

There is likely to be a rise in maximum temperatures by about 3 to 4 degrees Celsius&nbsp;over Northwest India during the next three days.&nbsp;

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal are expected to witness isolated heavy rainfall and widespread light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds during next four days.

According to the IMD report, isolated heavy rainfall is possible over Bihar from June 24 to 26, Jharkhand on June 25 and 26, Odisha on June 26, and Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands during June 23 and 26.

Fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall may occur over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands during the next 4 days.

India's northern states&nbsp;are expected&nbsp;to receive a fresh spell of rainfall this week, keeping scorching heat at bay for at least two days till May 14. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said regions like Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand&nbsp; are expected&nbsp;to witness widespread rainfall activity on Sunday.

The states may also witness thunderstorms and gusty winds. Regions such as Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa may also receive rainfall in some&nbsp;regions.

The IMD said the rains&nbsp;are caused&nbsp;by a Western Disturbance evolving as a cyclonic circulation over northern Pakistan and parts of Rajasthan.&nbsp;

Heavy rains&nbsp;are also expected&nbsp;in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.&nbsp;

Water crisis-hit Bengaluru will also witness rains, along with lightning and thunderstorms. The IMD has issued an orange alert for the city, and showers are predicted there throughout the week.

In West Bengal, people might get relief from the heatwave as showers are predicted&nbsp;there till Thursday.

"A strong moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal due to a cyclonic circulation lies over north Bangladesh and neighbourhood at 1.5 km above mean sea level, Thunderstorm with lightning along with gusty wind speed activity very likely to continue over districts of West Bengal,” the IMD said.

“Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind at 40-50 kmph are likely to continue till Monday across Bengal,” the IMD statement read.

Rainfall is expected in northeastern states too. Thunderstorms, lightning, and&nbsp;squally&nbsp;winds (30-40 kmph) are&nbsp;expected&nbsp;from May 12 to 15, increasing&nbsp;to&nbsp;widespread rainfall from May 16th to 18th.

No significant change in temperatures is predicted for the coming days, however, in northwest India.&nbsp;Instead, the IMD has predicted an intense heatwave in the region starting May 16, which can send temperatures soaring.

Meanwhile, many parts of East India can expect a rise of 2-4°C after two days of relative stability.

India's northern states are expected to receive a fresh spell of rainfall this week, keeping scorching heat at bay for at least two days till May 14. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said regions like Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are expected to witness widespread rainfall activity on Sunday.

Regions such as Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa may also receive rainfall in some regions. The IMD said the rains are caused by a Western Disturbance evolving as a cyclonic circulation over northern Pakistan and parts of Rajasthan. Heavy rains are also expected in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Good news for Bengaluru Water crisis-hit Bengaluru will also witness rains, along with lightning and thunderstorms. The IMD has issued an orange alert for the city, and showers are predicted there throughout the week. In West Bengal, people might get relief from the heatwave as showers are predicted there till Thursday. "A strong moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal due to a cyclonic circulation lies over north Bangladesh and neighbourhood at 1.5 km above mean sea level, Thunderstorm with lightning along with gusty wind speed activity very likely to continue over districts of West Bengal,” the IMD said. Rainfall is expected in northeastern states too. Thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds (30-40 kmph) are expected from May 12 to 15, increasing to widespread rainfall from May 16th to 18th. No significant change in temperatures is predicted for the coming days, however, in northwest India. Instead, the IMD has predicted an intense heatwave in the region starting May 16, which can send temperatures soaring. Meanwhile, many parts of East India can expect a rise of 2-4°C after two days of relative stability. (With inputs from agencies)

The study, published on Wednesday (May 8) in the journal Science Advances, indicates a potential link between heavy snowfall on Japan's Noto Peninsula and thousands of quakes measured there since late 2020.&nbsp;

William Frank, who is the study author and an assistant professor in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS), said, "We see that snowfall and other environmental loading at the surface impacts the stress state underground, and the timing of intense precipitation events is well-correlated with the start of this earthquake swarm."

"So, climate obviously has an impact on the response of the solid earth, and part of that response is earthquakes," he added.&nbsp;

On January 1 this year, the west coast of Japan was struck by a massive magnitude-7.6 earthquake near the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture. It was the strongest quake to hit the area in over a century. The quake killed 213 people and left 26,000 in emergency shelters.&nbsp;

The satellite images later revealed that the powerful quake even shifted its coastline by 800 kilometres. Since the initial earthquake, the Noto peninsula, which is located about 190 miles northwest of Tokyo on the Sea of Japan, experienced nearly 600 aftershocks.&nbsp;

Hundreds of small earthquakes have shaken up the Noto Peninsula since late 2020. The researchers analysed thousands of earthquakes that hit the peninsula. It found that the number of earthquakes in the area increased significantly, with hundreds being recorded daily, after a big snowfall in 2021.&nbsp;

In the latest study, researchers&nbsp;focused on a series of earthquakes on the Noto Peninsula. The findings revealed that the seismic activity in the region is unexpectedly linked to changes in subterranean pressure, which are controlled by seasonal patterns of snowfall and rainfall.&nbsp;

The researchers believe that this new connection between earthquakes and climate may not be limited only to Japan and they also think that the climate's influence on earthquakes could be even bigger with global warming and rise in temperature.&nbsp;

Frank added, "If we're going into a climate that's changing, with more extreme precipitation events, and we expect a redistribution of water in the atmosphere, oceans, and continents, that will change how the Earth's crust is loaded. That will have an impact for sure, and it's a link we could further explore."&nbsp;

Heavy rain with hailstorms struck several parts of Manipur on Sunday, damaging houses and vehicles. Most states in northeast India might receive heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand might receive light to moderate rainfall between May 6 and May 9.
