Georgia's ruling party plans to impeach president over her EU visits

<p>South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, on Thursday (August 31), said that the deadly fire incident that took place in the inner city of Johannesburg was "a wake-up call" for the country.<br />
<br />
In the massive blaze that engulfed a five-storey building, seventy-four people were killed, which included 12 children. The building was occupied by homeless people. More than 50 others were injured in the inferno.<br />
<br />
The city of Johannesburg had earlier confirmed that it owned the building, however, it had claimed that it was taken over by cartels. Officials stated that the cause of the deadly breakout remains unknown.</p>

<p>In a press conference at the site of the mishap, Ramaphosa said that the incident needs to be investigated and lessons have to be learnt so that such tragedies can be prevented in future.<br />
<br />
"It's a wake-up call for us to begin to address the situation of housing in the inner city," the South African leader said. The building was once home to abused children and women, however after its lease expired, it was "hijacked", explained President Ramaphosa to reporters.</p>

<p>South Africa has been dealing with a chronic housing shortage where an estimated 15,000 people have been estimated to be homeless in Johannesburg. "We need to get on top of this and find effective ways of dealing with problems of accommodation, housing, and services in the inner city," Ramaphosa stated.<br />
<br />
He also appreciated the emergency services for arriving at the scene 10 minutes after they received a report of the fire. Johannesburg city manager Floyd Brink stated that 200 families have been affected by the fire and "all efforts" were made to provide them accommodation.<br />
<br />
Spokesperson for the emergency services Robert Mulaudzi, speaking to the BBC, said that the building was gutted by fire, however, firefighters were able to bring out some of the occupants.<br />

<p>United States President Joe Biden, whose election campaigns have been focused on easing the financial woes of the voters, on Wednesday (August 30) launched a bid to decrease the cost of particular prescription drugs.<br />

US elections 2024: President Biden announces 10 drugs for price negotiations

<p>Zimbabwe's opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa, has vehemently contested the official re-election of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, asserting his own victory in an election that international observers criticise for falling short of democratic standards.</p>

<p>President Mnangagwa secured a second term with 52.6 per cent of the votes, while his main challenger, 45-year-old Chamisa, garnered 44 per cent, as per official results announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) late Saturday.</p>

Voting in this week's presidential and parliamentary elections was meant to be wrapped up within one day on Wednesday, but it was extended into Thursday in some wards after the late distribution of ballot papers. Niger coup leaders promise to prosecute deposed president Bazoum for 'high treason'

<p>Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins has announced his intention to step down from his role, along with his government, later this week. The move comes as Karins seeks a fresh mandate through an election, aiming to reshape the government after his proposed cabinet reshuffle was rejected by current coalition partners.</p>

<p>Speaking at a press conference, Karins revealed his plan to submit his resignation, along with that of his cabinet, to the country's president on Thursday (August 17). This decision underscores his determination to address the challenges posed by a strained coalition and pursue a new political direction.</p>

<h2><strong>Coalition dynamics and expansion efforts</strong></h2>

<p>Karins currently leads a three-way alliance comprised of his liberal-conservative New Unity party, the conservative National Alliance, and the centre-right electoral alliance United List.</p>

<p>However, his efforts to broaden the coalition to include the Alliance of Farmers and Greens and the left-leaning Progressives have encountered significant resistance.</p>

<p>The 58-year-old Prime Minister has been advocating for an expanded coalition for some time, seeking to incorporate new partners and perspectives.</p>

<p>However, his current coalition allies have repeatedly expressed reservations about this approach.</p>

<p>The recent setback occurred when Karins' proposed appointments for three ministerial positions were not endorsed by his coalition partners. Additionally, approval for several policy initiatives was withheld.</p>

<p>Karins stated that his party intends to designate its candidate for the prime ministerial position next Wednesday. For any prospective prime minister to assume office, they would require a mandate from Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics. Moreover, parliamentary approval would be essential before a new coalition could be established.</p>

<h2><strong>Upcoming challenges&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Notably, the next Latvian parliamentary election is not scheduled until 2026. Despite this, Karins' decision to resign and seek a fresh electoral mandate reflects his determination to navigate the existing political landscape and overcome the hurdles posed by coalition dynamics.</p>

United States 2024 presidential hopeful and rightwing Florida governor Ron DeSantis faced wide condemnation after he stated that if he gets elected to the White House, he will “start slitting throats” in the country's federal bureaucracy from the first day he comes in power.

United States 2024 presidential hopeful and rightwing Florida governor Ron DeSantis faced wide condemnation after he stated that if he gets elected to the White House, he will “start slitting throats” in the country's federal bureaucracy from the first day he comes in power. National Treasury Employees Union president Tony Reardon called the comments of hardline Republicans “repulsive and unworthy of the presidential campaign trail”. As reported by The Guardian, American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) President Everett Kelley said, “Governor DeSantis’ threat to ‘start slitting throats’ of federal employees is dangerous, disgusting, disgraceful and disqualifying.” Among other commentators, columnist Max Boot said that the words of DeSantis were “deranged” while founder of the Bulwark, a conservative site, Bill Kristol said that the governor was “making a bold play to dominate the maniacal psychopath lane in the Republican primary”. US: DeSantis says will ‘start slitting throats’ in federal bureaucracy if elected, sparks outrage

A federal judge who has emerged as one of the strongest authorities against rioters who took part in the January 6 insurgency at the United States Capitol will shortly meet with her most high-profile defendant: Donald Trump. Tanya Chutkan, a 2014 Obama appointee, was assigned to oversee the case on Tuesday after a federal grand jury indicted the former president on four counts related to his attempt to sabotage the 2020 presidential election, including conspiracy and obstruction of official proceedings.

Stanford University President Marc Tessier-Lavigne announced that he will submit his resignation after concerns over the integrity of his research were raised. Tessier-Lavigne announced that he will be stepping down. In a letter to staff and students on Wednesday (July 19), Tessier-Lavigne stated that he is stepping down because he thinks there will be a continued debate around his ability to head the university. “I’ve never submitted a scientific paper without firmly believing that the data were correct and accurately presented,” the president said. However, he accepted that he should have been more diligent in seeking corrections related to his work. <p>Putting an end to all speculations, Senegal President Macky Sall announced Monday in a televised speech that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming elections scheduled for February next year.&nbsp;Speculations had been circulating that Sall would attempt to extend his time in office, which led to unrest and violence in the country since 2021.&nbsp;Critics argued that a third term would be illegal, causing concerns about a potential democratic decline in Senegal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Senegal has a history of political stability and a relatively peaceful democratic system compared to some other countries in the region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"There has been much speculation and commentary on my eventual candidature on this election. The 2019 term was my second and last term," Sall said adding, "my decision, carefully considered... is not to run as a candidate in the upcoming election on Feb. 25, 2024. And this, even though the constitution grants me the right," reported Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Sall's decision relieves worries of democratic backslide</strong></h2>

<p>By declaring his intention not to run for another term, President Sallis expected to alleviate fears of a democratic regression in Senegal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some neighboring countries, such as Ivory Coast and Togo, have previously utilised changes to their constitutions as a means to prolong their stay in power.&nbsp;Regional leaders, including Niger's President Mohamed Bazoum, Guinea Bissau's President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, commended Sall's decision.&nbsp;</p>

<p>President Bazoum specifically mentioned that it would help ease tensions in the country.</p>

<p>It remains uncertain who will be nominated as candidates for the main political parties. Supporters at the president's party headquarters had mixed reactions to his announcement, with some applauding his decision while others expressed sadness. A female supporter in tears pledged to support whomever Sall designates as his preferred successor.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Unrest and allegations of political motivation</strong></h2>

<p>The recent unrest in Senegal was sparked by the conviction of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, who was sentenced to two years in prison on charges related to an alleged rape, which he vehemently denies.&nbsp;Many believe the charges were politically motivated to prevent Sonko from running in the upcoming elections.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Protesters, angered by what they saw as President Sall's marginalisation of opponents, engaged in violent acts such as setting buildings and vehicles on fire and throwing stones at the police.&nbsp;The clashes resulted in the deaths of at least 16 people, with some reports suggesting that security forces used live ammunition against the demonstrators.</p>

Putting an end to all speculations, Senegal President Macky Sall announced Monday in a televised speech that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming elections scheduled for February next year. Speculations had been circulating that Sall would attempt to extend his time in office, which led to unrest and violence in the country since 2021. Critics argued that a third term would be illegal, causing concerns about a potential democratic decline in Senegal. Senegal has a history of political stability and a relatively peaceful democratic system compared to some other countries in the region. The 2019 term was my second and last term," Sall said adding, "my decision, carefully considered... is not to run as a candidate in the upcoming election on Feb. 25, 2024. And this, even though the constitution grants me the right," reported Reuters. Sall's decision relieves worries of democratic backslide By declaring his intention not to run for another term, President Sallis expected to alleviate fears of a democratic regression in Senegal. Some neighboring countries, such as Ivory Coast and Togo, have previously utilised changes to their constitutions as a means to prolong their stay in power. Regional leaders, including Niger's President Mohamed Bazoum, Guinea Bissau's President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, commended Sall's decision. Supporters at the president's party headquarters had mixed reactions to his announcement, with some applauding his decision while others expressed sadness. Unrest and allegations of political motivation The recent unrest in Senegal was sparked by the conviction of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, who was sentenced to two years in prison on charges related to an alleged rape, which he vehemently denies. Many believe the charges were politically motivated to prevent Sonko from running in the upcoming elections. Protesters, angered by what they saw as President Sall's marginalisation of opponents, engaged in violent acts such as setting buildings and vehicles on fire and throwing stones at the police. The clashes resulted in the deaths of at least 16 people, with some reports suggesting that security forces used live ammunition against the demonstrators.
