Politicians are no strangers to blunders, but US President Joe Biden seems to have developed a knack for them, with his latest verbal mishap involving a mix-up of historic proportions. In an astonishing slip of the tongue, Biden found himself referring to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as the Iraq war, distinct events separated by more than a decade.

While departing the White House Wednesday, Biden was asked on the South Lawn by reporters how weakened Putin was in the aftermath of this weekend's aborted uprising by the Russian mercenary group.

Biden responded with uncertainty, stating, "It's hard to tell really" and mistakenly referred to Ukraine as Iraq. "He's clearly losing the war in Iraq. He's losing the war at home and has become a bit of a pariah around the world," Biden said.

The president's gaffe occurred as he was going to Chicago to deliver a speech on his administration's economic policies, commonly referred to as "Bidenomics." According to the Daily Mail, Biden was even carrying a notecard labeled "Daily News Summary" on the Wagner mutiny during the time of his gaffe but still seemed to manage the gaffe.

Previous blunder

This blunder marks the second instance within a short period, as Biden had made a similar mistake during a fundraiser in Chevy Chase, Maryland, Tuesday night where he once again mentioned Iraq when referring to the war in Ukraine.
Months after being elected as president of the Cambridge Union for Michaelmas 2023, Max Ghose has resigned following allegations of rigging the ballot. An investigation carried out found "a number of irregularities" in the Easter 2023 election.

Ghose had been accused of "stuffing ballots" to get a friend installed as his successor. According to a statement released by the Union, Charlier Palmer, the vice president, will serve as the president for Michaelmas 2023 in Ghose’s place.

Macron, Saudi crown prince call for ‘rapid end to political vacuum in Lebanon’

A bill aimed at empowering the Election Commission of Pakistan to announce election dates without the consent of the President was passed in the Senate on Friday despite opposition from lawmakers from ousted prime minister Imran Khan’s party.

The Elections (Amendment) Bill 2023, which replaced the erstwhile Elections Act 2017, was moved by Pakistan’s State Minister Shahadat Awan in the upper house.

The statement of objects and reasons of the legislation states that the Constitution envisages the duty of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to organise and conduct elections honestly, fairly, and in accordance with the law.

Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar said the right to choose the date for polls had been given to the ECP in 1973.

“But Ziaul Haq (former military dictator) gave this right to the President through an amendment,” he said.

Opposition senators, particularly those belonging to former prime minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have outrightly rejected the amendments.

“The Constitution is very clear about the date of the elections and it gives both the president and governor the power to announce the date for polls,” Leader of the Opposition Shahzad Waseem said.

The bill was introduced after the ECP shot a letter addressed to both houses of the Parliament, urging them to grant it more powers.

Subsequently, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani set up an eight-member bipartisan parliamentary committee in April to examine the amendments proposed by the ECP.

A bill aimed at empowering the Election Commission of Pakistan to announce election dates without the consent of the President was passed in the Senate on Friday despite opposition from lawmakers from ousted prime minister Imran Khan’s party.

ALSO READ | IMF criticises Pakistan's budget, red flags new tax policies Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar said the right to choose the date for polls had been given to the ECP in 1973. Pakistan empowers Election Commission to announce election dates without president's consent

Lawmakers in Lebanon on Wednesday (June 14) were unable to elect a new president even after the 12th attempt. A bitter political tussle between Iran-backed Hezbollah and its opponents is extending the protracted power vacuum in the country. The crisis-hit country has already been without a president for more than seven months. A previous attempt to elect a president was held on January 19.

The vote for the presidency, reserved for a Maronite Christian under Lebanon's delicate sectarian power-sharing system, pitted the Hezbollah-backed Sleiman Frangieh against financial official Jihad Azour, who has mainly been endorsed by Christian and independent legislators.

However, neither of the two has enough support to push them across the line to become president. Azour has garnered 59 votes and Frangieh has 51 per cent votes in the 128-seat parliament.

All lawmakers were present for the election. However, many left the chamber after they cast their ballots. The quorum was lost before a second round of voting.

"Enough passing the buck... for prolonging the vacuum," parliament speaker Nabih Berri said in a statement after the session.

"Only consensus and dialogue" will speed up the election of a president, he added, without immediately scheduling a new ballot.

Analysts said the vote risked further entrenching a political stalemate, dimming hopes of saving the economy after three years of meltdown.

"At this stage, the most likely scenario is a prolonged vacuum," analyst Karim Bitar said.

Much needed reforms

Global voices have urged Lebanese politicians to elect a presidential candidate who has support from across the political spectrum and one who can help the country carry out reforms post which billions of dollars in loans from abroad will be available.

On top of lacking a president, Lebanon has been governed by a caretaker cabinet with limited powers for more than a year.
By convention, the premiership is reserved for a Sunni Muslim and the post of parliament speaker goes to a Shiite Muslim.

Hezbollah and its allies in the past have repeatedly posted spoilt ballots to disrupt the vote. They then left so quorum was lost and a second round could not take place.

A similar tactic was adopted in the last presidential election. This move left Lebanon without a president for more than two years until Michel Aoun won in 2016.

Samy Gemayel, head of the Christian Kataeb party, called Wednesday's support for Azour an "uprising" against "diktats and threats", in reference to accusations Hezbollah is seeking to impose its preferred candidate.

India's Supreme Court on Friday quashed a plea that sought directions from the top court that the inauguration of the new Indian Parliament building should be done by the President of India Draupadi Murmu instead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The bench consisting of Justices JK Maheshwari and PS Narasimha declined to entertain the Public Interest Litigation which was filed by petitioner Advocate CR Jaya Sukin.

"What is your interest?", the bench questioned. "The head of the executive is the President... President is my president", the petitioner said.

Giving argument to the petitioner, Justice Narasimha said "We don't understand why you come with such petitions...we're not interested in entertaining it under Article 32".

The petitioner referred to Article 79 of the Indian Constitution, according to which, the Parliament of India comprises President and the two houses, Lok Sabha (lower house) and Rajya Sabha (upper house).

"How is Article 79 related to the inauguration?", Justice Maheshwari raised question. "President is the head of the parliament, he should open the building. Executive head is the only head who should open....", the petitioner submitted.

The bench was not convinced by the arguments put forth by the petitioner and just as it was about to decline the pleas, the petitioner requested permission to withdraw it.

However, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta said that the pleas must not be allowed to withdraw as doing that will lead to the petitioner filing the same petition in the High Court.

Mehta insisted that the apex court should conclusively declare that the matter is not justiciable, reported Live Law.

Upon this, the petitioner said that he has no plans to go to the High Court. India's Supreme Court on Friday quashed a plea that sought directions from the top court that the inauguration of the new Indian Parliament building should be done by the President of India Draupadi Murmu instead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Also Read | 11-year-old black boy shot in chest by Mississippi police he called for help Giving argument to the petitioner, Justice Narasimha said "We don't understand why you come with such petitions...we're not interested in entertaining it under Article 32". The petitioner referred to Article 79 of the Indian Constitution, according to which, the Parliament of India comprises President and the two houses, Lok Sabha (lower house) and Rajya Sabha (upper house). Also Read | Imran, his loyalists orchestrated May 9 violence: Intel report "How is Article 79 related to the inauguration?", Justice Maheshwari raised question. Watch | Battleground Bakhmut: Russia vs Ukraine | WION Wideangle × Mehta insisted that the apex court should conclusively declare that the matter is not justiciable, reported Live Law. Upon this, the petitioner said that he has no plans to go to the High Court. Giving reasoning for the same, he said he was withdrawing the plea so that the dismissal will not become a "certificate to the executive." The plea was later withdrawn upon the court's disinterest to entertain the matter. "President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu is not being invited to the inauguration of the new Parliament Building. Indian President enjoys certain powers and performs a variety of ceremonial functions. The powers of the President include Executive, Legislative, Judiciary, emergency, and military powers...", the petition said. 19 opposition parties boycott new Parliament building inauguration As many as 19 opposition political parties have decided to boycott the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building. “In short, the Parliament cannot function without the President. Yet, the Prime Minister has decided to inaugurate the new Parliament building without her. This undignified act insults the high office of the President, and violates the letter and spirit of the Constitution. It undermines the spirit of inclusion which saw the nation celebrate its first woman adivasi President,” a joint statement by the parties said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday approved an electronic call-up bill which will put restrictions on people who are eligible for military service but try to dodge it by not showing up at their enlistment office. The State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, had passed this bill earlier that would make it harder for those who avoid military service. This comes amid reports that many refuse to pick up mail at their official address to escape service. But with this bill approved now, electronic notifications will be sent too.

The legislation includes the creation of one registry for all people who are eligible to serve in the military and the implementation of electronic military summons. A copy of the legislation was posted on a government website on Friday, reported Russia's TASS news agency.

The legislation requires that electronic copies of draft orders be delivered to those who are qualified for military duty in addition to print copies.

An electronic summons will be deemed delivered if it is uploaded to the recipient's account on "a relevant online service, in an information system."

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday approved an electronic call-up bill which will put restrictions on people who are eligible for military service but try to dodge it by not showing up at their enlistment office.

An electronic summons will be deemed delivered if it is uploaded to the recipient's account on "a relevant online service, in an information system." A person will also receive notification of the summons through his or her account with the online portal for government services. As per TASS, a summons shall be deemed served seven days after the day it was registered in the draft registry, if it is not delivered in writing or electronically.
A court in the United States on Wednesday (April 5) rejected an appeal by former Peru president Alejandro Toledo against his extradition to Peru on corruption charges. This makes it likely that he will be the third former leader who will be jailed in Lima. On Wednesday, Peru's Justice Minister Jose Tello said that a California judge had ordered Toledo to turn himself in to US Marshals Service on Friday and await extradition. Toledo's request for bail was revoked.

Toledo, who was president from 2001 to 2006, is wanted over charges that he received more than $25 million from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in exchange for help in obtaining public works contracts. Prosecutors are seeking a 20-year-and-six-month prison sentence.

Toledo denies soliciting or receiving bribes. He has not been criminally charged in the US.

"Sooner rather than later, Toledo will answer to Peruvian justice," Tello told television station Canal N, adding that his extradition should take place in a "matter of days".

The Peruvian minister said 77-year-old Toledo is expected to be held while he awaits trial in a jail complex in the outskirts of Lima that was built to hold former president Alberto Fujimori. Former president Pedro Castillo is also being held there.

Fujimori, who ruled from 1990 to 2000, is serving a 25-year prison sentence for human rights abuses, while Castillo is being held in pre-trial detention while he is under investigation for alleged rebellion after trying to dissolve Congress in December. He denies wrongdoing.

Toledo's defence has said it will present another appeal in the U.S., according to Tello, who called it an obvious "delaying tactic."
