Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Monday called his country safer than the United States, days after a group of Americans were kidnapped and two of them were killed.

"Why this paranoia?" said Lopez Obrador said when quizzed by reporters about the recommendation of the US government to avoid travelling to Mexico or exercise increased precaution while visiting the country.

"Mexico is safer than the United States and there's no problem to travel through Mexico safely," he stated. The comments came days after four US citizens were abducted on March 3, out of which two were killed, after they crossed the border and entered northeastern Mexico, apparently so that one person could undergo cosmetic surgery.

The officials on Friday confirmed that they have arrested five suspected drug cartel members for committing crimes of kidnapping and homicide after the incident which took place in Tamaulipas state.

As per the Mexican authorities, the Americans were mistaken by the drug traffickers as their rivals because of which they shot at them when the visitors tried to escape.

Plagued by cartel-related bloodshed, the Latin American country, has witnessed around 350,000 people being killed since the military was deployed by the government in the war on drugs in 2006.

Former Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama has been charged with abuse of authority, according to the government prosecutor. Bainimarama governed the Pacific island nation for 16 years before narrowly losing an election in December.

Bainimarama has been charged with abuse of authority, and Sitiveni Qiliho, the police commissioner, has been suspended, according to a statement from Fiji's director of public prosecutions, Christopher Pryde.

The charges stem from an allegation made by the University of South Pacific in 2019 that the two had halted "an active police investigation" into the actions of former university employees.

Bainimarama made his resignation official on Wednesday (March 8), after a three-year suspension from the Fijian parliament.

In a statement on the Facebook page of his FijiFirst party, Bainimarama claimed that he had submitted his resignation "with immediate effect," but that he had no intention of leaving politics.

The 68-year-old had taken office in a bloodless coup in 2006 and was the prime minister till a fiercely contested general election in December of last year.

Following a speech in which the opposition leader criticised both the president and his successor, Sitiveni Rabuka, the parliament suspended Bainimarama until 2026.

The constitution, according to Bainimarama, was "being stripped away almost on a daily basis" by Rabuka's new administration, which he charged Katonivere of neglecting to defend.

Bainimarama called his three-year ban for violating parliamentary process "unwarranted and most definitely unreasonable" in a statement on Wednesday.

"However, the decision has been made by parliament through (a) vote and I have complied with the decision," he added.

The resignation of Bainimarama, who will continue to lead FijiFirst, ensures that his opposition party will always be able to have 26 seats in the 55-seat legislature.

"This is to ensure that we keep the three-uneven-legged stool in check," he added, referring to Rabuka's coalition government.

A FijiFirst politician will take over his parliamentary seat, and Bainimarama said that the party will designate one of his former ministers, Inia Seruiratu, as the next opposition leader at the next meeting.

He continued by saying he will continue to play an active role in national politics.

An attack on Azerbaijan's embassy in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on January 27, left one dead and two others injured. WION spoke with Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and asked him on whom the onus lies for the tension between Azerbaijan and Iran. Speaking exclusively to WION, the Azerbaijan president said, the attack on the embassy "was an organised act of terror against Azerbaijan."

"During the 30-40 minutes, the terrorists were not disarmed and the police were coming and going...but they allowed them (the attackers) to break in, resulting in the killing of a police officer and injury to others," he said.

The president said, "The lives of dozens of Azerbaijanis and diplomats were saved because of the bravery of one unarmed security officer. Therefore, we demand an immediate and transparent investigation."

The Azerbaijan president further shared with WION his suspicions over what happened after the attack. "The terrorist was interviewed by Iranian media which demonstrates that the terrorist was sent from the Iranian establishment," he told WION.

And another strange thing that happened after two days, the president said was that "he (the suspected attacker) was declared as a mentally unstable person. How can they tell this so quickly? It is an attempt to protect him."

He urged the Iranian government to conduct "a transparent investigation."

"We should be informed and the terrorist should be punished. But most importantly, the people who sent the terrorist, from the establishment, who did this brutal act should be brought to justice, then only we can have normal relations," Aliyev said.

An attack on Azerbaijan's embassy in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on January 27, left one dead and two others injured. WION spoke with Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and asked him on whom the onus lies for the tension between Azerbaijan and Iran. Speaking exclusively to WION, the Azerbaijan president said, the attack on the embassy "was an organised act of terror against Azerbaijan." "During the 30-40 minutes, the terrorists were not disarmed and the police were coming and going...but they allowed them (the attackers) to break in, resulting in the killing of a police officer and injury to others," he said. Therefore, we demand an immediate and transparent investigation." The Azerbaijan president further shared with WION his suspicions over what happened after the attack. It is an attempt to protect him." He urged the Iranian government to conduct "a transparent investigation." But most importantly, the people who sent the terrorist, from the establishment, who did this brutal act should be brought to justice, then only we can have normal relations," Aliyev said. After the attack, the Azerbaijan government had said that a security official was killed when a gunman opened fire at embassy grounds. Local police had claimed to have arrested a suspect and launched an investigation into the incident. President Joe Biden’s visit to Poland later this month, to mark the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, will be a “historic moment” that will emphasise the strength of Polish-U.S, relations and of Washington’s support for Ukraine, says US ambassador Mark Brzezinski.

David Malpass, who was appointed by former US President Donald Trump as the World Bank President, said Wednesday that he would leave his post by the end of June. Malpass's tenure as the World Bank President has less than a year remaining. The term for the top post is of five years. While Malpass did not give out any specific reason for his leaving the post, he did mention that he took the decision “after a good deal of thought." "I’ve decided to pursue new challenges," he said in his statement.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen expressed her gratitude to Malpass. In a statement, she said that the world has benefited from his "strong support for Ukraine", "his vital work to assist the Afghan people", and his “commitment to helping low-income countries achieve debt sustainability through debt reduction.”

South African president declares 'state of disaster' amid worst power crisis. What is it about?

In what can be termed as an increasingly authoritative shift, Tunisia President Kais Saied on Tuesday dismissed Othman Jerandi as the foreign minister of the country without citing any reason. This latest firing makes the top diplomat the fourth minister to leave his position since Saied made a spectacular attempt to seize power in July 2021.

Tunisia has since then been plagued by growing political tensions.

The president announced on its official website that Nabil Ammar, Tunisia's ambassador to the European Union, will take over as foreign minister. The trade, agriculture, and education ministries were previously replaced by Saied this year. However, Jerandi remained the country's foreign minister since September 2020.

Saied forced through a new constitution in a referendum in July 2022 that defanged the parliament and imposed a hyper-presidential administration. He then ousted the government, froze the legislature, and acquired expansive executive powers.

There have been many teacher and transportation worker strikes in Tunisia recently, and there have also been shortages of basic necessities like milk, reported AFP.

After opposition groups called for a boycott, just 11.4% of Tunisians participated in the second round of voting in January for the now-powerless legislature. Saied is under increasing criticism from the populace, who accuses him of initiating a "coup" in the country that saw the first Arab Spring uprisings in favour of democracy.

The civil resistance in Arab Spring is still vivid in peoples' minds. It culminated in a series of protests on the streets of Tunisia, which resulted in Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's overthrow in January 2011. Ultimately, it brought to a complete democratisation of the nation as well as free and democratic elections.

Since that 2011 revolution, which was sparked by persistent economic problems, none of the governments that took office have been able to make significant progress in resolving these issues. The ensuing protracted economic crisis finally led to a crisis in democracy and drastically reduced the confidence and support of the Tunisian people for the nation's young and vulnerable democratic institutions and procedures.

This further comes in the backdrop of Tunisia's protracted discussions with the International Monetary Fund for a bailout worth about $2 billion.
